When i save a contact with name and surname it appears on my contact list like this: Surname, Name (ex: Gates, Bill), can i change this so that the name is displayed first?(ex: Bill Gates).
Furthermore, can i disable the default format by which phone numbers are saved? By default when i add a phone number to a contact it appears like this (xxx) xxx-xxxx. Not that i have a problem with this BUT when i transfered some contacts from my p910 i found out that they were saved like xxxxxxxxxx. So what, you may think...well actually when a message delivery report arrives (and the contact is not saved with the "default phone format"), next to the phone number(in the delivery report) shows the name of the contact, something that is very usefull when -for example- multiple messages are sent or when a message is delivered 2-3 days later.
ps: actually, what i really need is not neccesarily to change the default phone format but to find out a way to see in the message delivery report the name of the contact that the message was delivered to.
ps2:sorry for the huge post!
thanx in advance
I had the same problem 2 years ago, and found out that it is impossible to let the PPC display the name as "Firstname Surname". So I "solved" it by saving the full name of the contact under Firstname. I know it isn't a solution but I couldn't get it to display it how I wanted it.
yeah, i did the same thing, but as you said it isn't a solution
Your problem here then is to hack the deilvery report, not Poutlook.

what matters is to achieve the goal and not how it will be achieved
True, but "Every Journey Begins With a Single Step, Minus Your Shoes".
Knowing what to hack and what not to hack is your first step. Poutlook, I believe, stores the contact data in whatever format it is happy with. You can't change that - you can change the external display of that data through the File As field, but that's subject to the app you are using using that field and not the underlying data stored in Poutlook.
So, if you wish to force the message delivery report into using the fields as you want them, hack that. Poutlook can't be easily hacked and is not your problem. So research hacking the delivery report, and/or learn to hack it yourself to force custom output.

thanx vijay555, i found this Name of recipient in SMS delivery receipt on WM5 and i guess this is what i was looking for
this really is very simple (assuming you sync with outlook on your pc).
In your contacts in outlook, double click a contact and in the "file as" drop down change it to "firstname lastname". then sync with your device and hey presto, all will be as you want!
bit of a pain in the arse if you've got 5billion contacts, but hey!
yeah, i discovered it yesterday, thanx anyway, but as you said its a pain...
I don't get it. If you're going to use File As, just use FileasFL to do the conversion automatically on your PPC.

I can't imagine I just got the latest toy and the whole thing made a step backwards...
I cannot send an SMS to a specific group of people among my contacts if not choosing each of them one by one each time...
I have many different group of people I send SMS' to and I was used to have lists on SmartSMS while using a SmartPhone and also distribution lists and categories on Outlook while at the desk...
With Wizard it seems there are no solutions... I have tried almost all of the trial SMS managers out there, but it seems I have no luck...
I've spent the last two days looking for a solution (either within WM5 or as an addon...). No luck...
Do you have any hint ?
Is there anyone wishing to develop something like above explained ?
Thank you very much...
Best regards...

Yeah, im also intressted in sending sms to a group.
Me too, plz let me know if you find some solution...
for a OS of such quality it is an appalling lapse by MS
We should all email them a support question and ask them if it will be included in the next release??

I've tried a little bit to use InfoSharp to send SMS to contacts within a category (fortunately there is such chance on this small and nice program...). The program itself is not yet "finished" but it does the job...
I'll post my suggestion to the developer, hoping that growing, it will become better.
About sending our comments to Microsoft: well, I personally think it would be nice, but it would be nicer if our suggestions could be "understood" in any way. It seems to me this rarely happens.
Not to mention the function I'm looking for was present in WM2003SE !!!
Maybe too many shrimps are eaten within MS... ;-)

P.S. Actually ANY SUGGESTION on this matter would help, as it seems there still is not solution...
Hi guys have found an app for sending sms by category group
The app is called 'simplysms' and is developed by a company called visual IT.
It's not windows 5 compatible at the moment although I am waiting for a response from the developers.
I'll keep people posted.
Website: www.visualit.co.uk
SimplySMS mobile 5 will be released in the new year.

Is seems they have no plans developing any WM5 version of such program, otherwise something would have appeared on their website...
I think then there is no other option to keep a Nokia phone in my pocket too... but then I don't need an HTC pocket PC... I can run with another one with no phone functions as I did in the past...
Any other news ???

It is very helpful utility if we can find it
if we can have such an application it will be very greate
SimplySMS for windows 5 will be launched in March
Had an email from Visualit the makers of simplysms. They will be releasing a windows mobile 5 version of the software in March this year.
It will allow users to send a text to a outlook category of contacts.
Hold on it's round the corner.

You could create a shortcut with the recipients pre-listed. E.g.
Text message colleagues.lnk
32#"tmail.exe" -to "06xxxxxxx; 06xxxxxxx; 06xxxxxxx" -service ""
Will prompt the messaging app with a new message. If you last used Hotmail/whatever, though - it won't start a new text message, but a new e-mail/whatever.
If you want to be able to pick the account, use instead:
32#"tmail.exe" -to "06xxxxxxx; 06xxxxxxx; 06xxxxxxx"
If you want to add a default message, use :
32#"tmail.exe" -to "06xxxxxxx; 06xxxxxxx; 06xxxxxxx" -body "Text here"
-----
You can also use vijay555's VJSMS to always send a text message, regardless of what account you're in.
32#"\Program Files\vijay555\VJSMS.exe" "06xxxxxxx; 06xxxxxxx; 06xxxxxxx" -body "Text here"
http://www.vijay555.com/index.php?Releases:VJPhoneTools
-----
Essentially, all the above are more like 'templates' than they are group text message tools. If you have a new person you want to add to a 'group', you'll have to manually adjust the shortcut.
On the other hand - it's available now, and freely.

Thank you very much for the helpful hint... the main problem anyway is always the same: I use distribution lists so I don't have to bother on updates of contacts details. I just keep them updated and I have the result.
There is anyway a major problem on the hint you just gave me: line limitation...
WM5 accepts for example multiple recipients on the "To:" field but the problem is I still do not know which is the maximum number (I suppose it depends on how long the "To:" field can be, maybe max 255 char.).
The same problem applies to your hint: I suppose there is still the limitation of 255 chars... or not ? ;-)
Thanks anyway.
yeah, I have no idea what the maximum length is
Of course, for Dutch numbers, 10 chars length, 11 if I include that semicolon, that's still 25 numbers Sending an SMS to 25 people should be more than enough for me
You could also write a mort script to call VJSMSSend a gazillion times :>
The former issue is the bigger one - I hate updating lists, myself. There shouldn't be anything holding developers back from implementing mailing lists, using info from the contacts POOM, and setting up SMS's (setting up and sending an SMS is a MSDN example, so.. pff)
I'm no developer, though - I just managed to get "Hello world" running a few days ago, and then I got sick - so no long computer times for me
SMS Distribution Lists
Having Upgraded to a qtek 9100 from a nokia 9300 communicator for better windows/outlook compatibility etc, I have been searching for something to fill the gap for SMS Distribtion lists.
I understand from reading other posts than previous versions of Windows mobile did offer this, aswell as being able to play different ringtones depending on chich caller group a call was originating from.
Has there been any new information on SMS Distribution lists for the HTC Wizard phones?
Also, is there any way to actually just select "send new txt message" rather than go to messaging and browse to the correct account/ folder to achieve this?

Different approach: select the contact you need to send the SMS to and select "Send new SMS" from the options. You'll have the editor opening with the "To:" field already filled...
Hope this helps a little...

Download the attached file, extract the included shortcut to your PPC, and run it - see if that works for you. If it does, you'll note that there's "to" and "body" fields that you can fill out if you want (e.g. a pre-composed message to your boss saying that you'll be on your lunch break)
For some more advanced SMS stuff, try VJPhoneTools:
http://www.vijay555.com/index.php?Releases:VJPhoneTools
Or one of the many commercial SMS apps
The download when unzipped only contains a shortcut which is not valid.
CAn we download it from your website?
it's supposed to only contain a shortcut
Code:
32#windows\tmail.exe -service "SMS" -to "" -body ""
If you don't have a "tmail.exe" in your device's "Windows" folder, then indeed it's probably invalid. Try searching for that file on your device, see if it's elsewhere. If it's not, or you can't find it, just use one of VJ's tools instead
Group sms
O2SMSPlus is out and about, it's for wm5 and does group sms.
This is driving me up the wall - I got my O2 XDA Mini S yesterday, and I love it, bar 1 (major) fault - I can't (easily) send an SMS to multiple contacts.
Every day I send out 10 texts (sometimes more) to different people (to see who can play football that night). It's not always the same 10, so I can't just set up a Dist List or Group.
At the minute I have to click where it says To:, choose a contact, click where it says To:, choose another contact, etc, etc.
How on Earth can I just click To:, select as many contacts as I need, then send?
I realise after searching these forums that I don't think it can be done with the standard software, but is there any 3rd party software that will let me do this? (I'm only bothered about SMS, not e-mail, if that matters)
Thank you so much!
FlexMail 2007 seems to do what I need.
hey mate, on my mda vario when I start a new sms the cursor is in the 'To' field.
All I do is start typing the name of who I want to send to and the vario brings up a list of possibilites, like it does when it's guessing what words you're typing during a text. Once I pick a name the cursor then moves across so I can type in another name and so on and so on.
does your Mini S not do this?
I just noticed today that it does!!!
It's a shame really that people say "It doesn't do <insert action here>" but actually it does...
It's not their fault they havn't noticed it, it's that it's so well hidden, you don't see it...
i send similar SMS's to a group of friends. what i did was create a new "Contact" for each person and i put a prefix before each name (ie) 1carlos....etc 2mark.....etc this way they are the very first contacts on the list so when i hit the "To" button all the names are right in order at the top of the list
hope this helps
Same here. I send a list of emails or SMS messages to a group of friends. I never found a way to create a distribution list like you can do on the desktop version of Outlook.
I created a notepad file with all the groups. I cut and paste them in the To: box to send to those groups.

Here is my latest application SMS Switch which can trigger a command line based on the SMS received.
Built with the idea of ‘Push LIKE mail’ where the device gets the SMS notification on ‘New mail’ from your email service. rk-SMS Switch intercepts the SMS and based on the SMS sender and/or message text executes the command line (such as \Windows\tmail.exe) to synchronize the emails.
Required:
Your device is able to synchronize the emails using pocket outlook.
Your device receives the SMS notification on new mail message.
Uses:
Push LIKE mail
Not wasting bandwidth for keep checking the server at regular intervals.
Saving the battery since you do not need always on gprs.
If you have multiple email accounts and want to make use of wifi network etc, then you might want to check up my other application rk-OSR which has support for command line execution.
This is just an idea and initial version. Let me know if you guys like it.
(Updated latest working version 1.0.4)
Version 1.0.4
Supports square screens(320 X 320)
Version 1.0.3
Now the triggerring SMS are automatically removed from your inbox! All normal SMS will only appear in the SMS inbox.
Now the application can be activated by the menu short cuts etc. No need to go to today screen. New option added to put it to tray or not.
Not tested much as I do not have SMS plans to play with each SMS i send to test get charged
Version 1.0.2 Hotfix
Bug fix: Please do not use version 1.0.1 which has a issue to sync up outlook and unusable.
Version 1.0.1 Updates
Separate tabs added for command line OR Outlook use.
If using the command line to invoke rk-OSR then timeout option added so that if multiple sms received only one the command line is executed(based on the timeout)
If want to sync up only one account then use the 'Outlook' option and only configure the 'Outlook' tab.
If using outlook show/hide outlook option added.
Since I am using Windows Live Push mail I am not using this application so you will be the tester!
If you like the application please show your support by donation on Paypal

This sounds like a great solution, if it works that is...

Yeah, cuz that extra step sort of kills the whole convenience of it...
what I *used* to do when I wanted to save battery power, is forward my gmail to my sms address, and when I saw the first 160 chars with my sms, I'd delete it, go over to outlook and fetch new mail.
With this, at least I don't have to actually click fetch new mail, but it still requires manual deletion, so its not a complete solution yet. :/
looking forward to the next version then...
By the way, how do u get sms notifications for your email? Do you just forward a copy of your email to your sms address? Because if doing it that way, how do u tell the difference between what is coming from your email and what is just something someone sent to your sms directly?
if someone sends you an sms, most likely they will send it through a phone number. if forwarded from an email, the sender will not be a phone number, most likely an email address or some other sender info that is separate from a standard phone number like you would get from a normal sms.
I think that's how it works.
I currently do the same style as you. have gmail forward me an sms of the email message. if it looks important i go to outlook and download the entire message.

The field 'From' contains... Should have a partial email address... May be @Gmail.com(I am not sure about how you get emails forwarded, check the text message from address and set it)
You could also use 'Message' Contains option to check only if there is a predefined text in the message.
To use either of the two options use 'OR' option.

ah, see gmail is good enough to leave the message intact exactly as it is recieved, original sender and all. So, as I said, there's no way to tell it was forwarded from gmail at all.
Maybe what I should do then is forward to hotmail or something that DOESNT leave everything intact, and from THERE forward to my inbox... a bit backwards...
yes i agree. gmail is good in that they are generous enough to convert the email address to only showing the Sender's name. normally this is appreciated, but in this case, it makes things a bit more complicated as now like Dishe said, it is impossible to distinguish between a normal sms and one being forwarded by gmail.

EDIT: I may have a work around. When GMAIL forwards an email to your phone with an sms notification, the sms contains the text "FRM:", "SUBJ:", "MSG:" within the body of the SMS as part of the actual text message.
The program lets you set a filter for the FROM field and/or the MESSAGE field. So using the program, you can put the filter to either one of the three "FRM:", "SUBJ:", "MSG:" instead of the default "@". This would eliminate the need to know that it was forwarded from GMail at all.
This would solve the problem because regular SMS when sent does not show the text "FRM:", "SUBJ:", "MSG:" in the body of the sms. in theory it looks like works, i havent tested it. i installed the program, can you please let me know what is the command line argument to have it send/receive?
Right now i have the command line sent to windows/tmail.exe and it just opens the email prog. I guess i need the argument too to have it actually send/receive.

Try the cammand line as follows
Commanline ----> \Windows\tmail.exe
Arguments------> -service "Gmail Account Name" -sync
Where "Gmail Account Name" should be the name of your account as typed on the pocket outlook and double quotes are required.
it worked! i tested it three times.
1. sent regular sms via a IM application on PC (AIM).
2. sent SMS via another cell phone.
3. had email forwarded through gmail to phone
i used FRM: for FROM contains, and SUBJ: for Message contains. I chose teh "OR" option.
worked as planned. the first two regular sms was sent without activating the inbox syncing. the third time when gmail forwarded the email to my phone sms, since it contained the field: FRM:", "SUBJ:", "MSG:" it automtically sync my inbox.
one thing though, it automatically syncs the inbox which is great but it does so in the background so you still need to go to the inbox then go to the message to read it. is it possible to make it so after it syncs, it opens the actual inbox so you can see your list of unread emails? maybe through adding to the argument?

The problem that I mentioned before was that ALL EMAIL sent to [email protected] will have FRM:, SUBJ:, MSG in the body, whether it comes from gmail or not.
Sometimes, if I'm at my desk and want to remember something, I'll send an email to my phone's sms address. Also, I have freinds with data plans and no sms plans who email to sms ([email protected]) all the time.
Your solution could not differentiate between those emails sent purposely to an sms address versus ones meant to trigger syncing.
Right now, its not a big problem yet since the app doesnt delete the trigger sms. But at the same time, I hate having to clear two independant inboxes of new messages now (both email and the sms trigger need clearing), so I need the function to remove the trigger after it syncs eventually.
If the email wasnt supposed to be a trigger, you can understand why this may prove problematic.

heh, mine's free. Not to brag or anything, but Sprint over here in the states has killer 3G data plans. I'm just looking to maximize my meager battery life.
EDIT: By the way, TyTnGuy, I went to set up a hotmail/windows live account so that I could try forwarding email THERE and then have THAT forward to my sms with the @hotmail account in the header, but guess what? Live/Hotmail doesn't support forwarding AT ALL!!
So, it looks to me like you couldn't possibly have gotten this to work yourself... What are you not telling us?
he said he doesnt need the program since he uses live mail which should have its own pushlike mail in wm. he creating the program for people who may need it, and specifically cited gmail in his example. i think haha.
i am still trying to figure out if there is a commandline argument that opens up the inbox after it syncs. that's a really good thing to have i think. right after you get the notifications, the inbox opens and you can see all your unread email.
i am about to set up a dataplan, not just for this but for other business, and so that is why, despite my earlier comment about not having a dataplan, i am so interested in it now haha. better then polling every X-minutes indeed.
sorry to bring this back up. anyone happen to know the command line argument to open up inbox?
this is the current argument that makes it sync when you get a sms notification: service "Gmail Account Name" -sync
that works fine, but it does so in the background. I was hoping there is more to the argument where after it syncs it opens the inbox for you. or it open inbox then sync is fine too

I am working on a next version I will do something to support the above request.
I know how to send a text to multiple recipients, but it seems a long winded way of doing it. like selecting one recipient then going back into the contact list and doign it again.
On my Nokia E65 I could just go into my contacts list and put a check next to each name, very handy when sending a text to 30 or so people.
Is there a way to do this on Touch HD?
I face the same prob too... its kinda tiring if we have so many receipients to send to... one by one... even a low end phone can allow user to tick as many contacts at one go.. hope someone have a shortcut for this prob..
yep its a bit of a nightmare having to add contacts one by one.
what you need is something that will "Group" into your SMS composition menu.
something like this....
you can create new groups and add contacts as you see fit. then when it comes to composing the mail, just add the group you want. works really well.
i organise my 5-a-side games using this. dead handy.
This really annoyed me at first but I then found it a lot easier to just begin typing contact names into the To: field, and then using the auto list to select them rather than using the contact list if that helps.

Saves a little time, but if im sending to loads of people i might not remember their name unless i see them on the list first.
Show me the check boxes......
Try MassMessage (just check a box before each name, and send it to everyone you choose in the list) and SMSDRFIX (choose to see the number, the name, both)
can i assigne this mass message to the touchflo interdface so that launches when i click messages as opposed to the standard WM messafing centre.
I can only see it in in the start menu buttons.

something like this....
you can create new groups and add contacts as you see fit. then when it comes to composing the mail, just add the group you want. works really well.
i organise my 5-a-side games using this. dead handy.

In this prog you can only use groups for SMS. I have several categories (subfolders) in Outlook of my employees' e-mails. I'd like to send email to a group, not only SMS.
The other thing that bothers me is that the groups (categories) this program shows do not have complete database. For example, group "employees" has 20 entries, but only 12 show with this prog. Also if I choose "all contacts" it merely shows 10% of all I have. Any fixes? I'm using v1.4.8.
hey everyone, does anybody know how to send a sms messege to multiple people without having to add one recipient everytime? is there even a way to begin with?

Hi
Probably the easiest way to do it is with an app called Power SMS by Trinket Software. It's an app you need to pay for but it does other things such as scheduling SMS's and producing reports. If you just wish to send an SMS to specific groups you can use a program call GroupSMS this is freeware. You have to set the groups up in outlook on your PC but it's free and works for me.
Hope this has helped
such tasks usually come on common hollidays to me, i.e. known dates. so i use my laptop for multi-sms from home. i use efficasoft mobile express.

With groupsms, you can also select individual contacts by checking the box, not necessary to create groups. you can find the program here
http://www.freewarepocketpc.net/
all i do is in the "To:" coloumn when writing a SMS, i write out the contacts name and it will show their number at the bottem of the screen as you type and select the contact. then i start to write the next contact name and select them and so on. hope this helps
