Hey, I've recently converted some DVD's to MP4's for use on my GF's iPod video, and they work great there. I figured I'd try to use them on my phone, of course, and had to find a media player to do it (Platform 4 Player), but for some reason the video is choppy as hell. These same files play perfectly on an ipod. I used CloneDVD Mobile to do the ripping (and DVD43 to break the encryption, which clearly worked out as evidenced by the ipod playing them just fine), so I'm at a loss for what's the problem. These are at 320x240, AAC audio.

Not sure if it will work, but you might try TCPMP, which you can find at tcpmp.corecodec.org. (If that link doesn't work, just google it. I was having problems with the link when I wrote this).
Yeah, I tried TCPMP and it wouldn't play back the video *at all* for some reason. I got audio thanks to the AAC plugin, but still, no video. It's strange because the same damn episodes and movies recompressed to WMV play just fine, but of course, those won't work on the iPod.

That's what I have right now. It *works*, and I get video at least, but it's so choppy that it looks like a slideshow.
Anyone ever use MP4's on an 8125 successfully I wonder?

I had the import copy of Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children as an MP4 on my Wizard a while back and actually found that overclocking helped with playback.
At the stock 195Mhz, the phone would have some problems with choppy playback or even some spurts of clean playback and then a hesitation. When overclocked to 260Mhz, the playback became as smooth as silk.
Are you dropping in the MP4's straight in or are you converting them with a program like Pocket DivX converter? Conversion will usually help out with choppy playback as well, provided that the scaling and details optimize playback and etc.

Well, I'm using the Jodix Free iPod converter for files that are just AVI's and whatnot, but for DVD rips I'm using CloneDVD mobile. I'm running both with a bitrate of around 450Kb for video and I *think* 128Kb for audio, if I recall. Both seem to want to do audio only in AAC, though, but I'm not sure if that's related. I have my Wizard at 252Mhz right now with the same cruddy results. I may have to try a lower bitrate, I suppose

I am now firmly of the opinion that the Wizard cannot match the iPod's specialize hardware, and that using autosettings in conversion programs will always yield these results.
Conclusion: Find settings that work on your Wizard (the common denominator) and use those to encode for both devices.

Thanks, I'll give that a try. With any luck I can find settings that both work on the Wizard *and* don't look like complete ass on the iPod . I'll report my figurings back here on the off chance anyone else is crazy enough to try such a ridiculous stunt in the future, LOL.

Sorry guys, bad news. Sorry if this has already been posted and it has eluded me, but the hermes/TyTN cannot play your Divx/Xvid encoded AVI files in TCPMP!
I've read on some other forums that I am not alone in this area as during TCPMP installation, a pop message makes some mention of the on-board ATI imaging.....whatever. Point is the ATI stuff on the VarioII/TyTN interferes with TCPMP to the point of causing such interference that the interface is 'scrambled' almost like severe 'bad reception' to the point of being totally unuseable. I'm gutted. I've tried most versions of TCPMP includinc 0.71 and 0.72, but to no avail.
I've now tried for the first time other players, like PocketMVP, but no joy.
I was wondering if any TyTN/VarioII/VPA...owners have had a positive experience in this regard?
Specifically with their own Divx or Xvid encoded movie clips or full DVD's converted to such an AVI file.
Any feedback will be greatly appreciated.
P.S. The developers of TCPMP are well aware of this as there are many posts on this topic in their forum but till now no solution.
Has anybody found an alternative player? And for those unfamiliar with this problem, NO Windows Media Player cannot handle Divx/Xvid AVI videos (which IMHO are the best quality video files on a PPC).

Just set TCPMP to use Raw FrameBuffer or GDI through options -> video and it plays fine

When I first read this post, I thought little of it until I came across some stuttering on Video playback under GDI settings.
I decided to run a Benchtest under TCPMP in both modes, and on my VarioII, RawFramebuffer mode outperformed GDI mode by minimum of 50%. Additionally, under 'Media Information' of TCPMP, GDI mode played back the Mpeg1 video file at 18 fps compared to 33 fps in framebuffer mode (no stutters either).
It must be differences between the ROMs or other 3rd party Apps that is causing such a great degree of difference, but for now, I'm sticking to RAWFRAMEBUFFER mode. :wink:

looks and sounds great on mine. what kind of video files are you trying to play? what resolution/bitrate? if you're trying to play like an hr hdtv xvid file...then yea...your phone will have a hard time playing it.
i just use the psp or ipod video convertor to convert to 320x240, 768kbps...and it looks & plays beautifully.

The forementioned file was an MPEG 1 file @320x240 from pocketmovies.net, though usually I encode my own vids using DVDx and Divx Codec 6.0 @320x240 @ 400 or 500kbps and all play flawlessly. Presently though I can't test them coz I haven't received my Transflash card yet!
But hey, if it works for you, more power to ya. The other works better for me. :wink:
It's starts playing fine. But what happenes when you pause video and then play again? Mine is stuffers like hell, only solution is reload videofile....
Yep same here, works just great with video set to rawframebuffer and audio to anything, but after a puse or skip to later in the video audio stutters and the only resolution to it is reloading the file.
Same problem over here.
Even with BT radio off, I have the same scrambled view when selecting Ati.
Raw frame buffer works for video, but then I still have the audio skipping after pause.

those psp/ipod video convertor programs (videora to be exact) convert it to mpeg4 format, using h.264. i've never tried playing an mpeg1 file on my mda or trion, but you should at least test a converted mp4 video file on your device and see how it plays.
edit: i just ran a benchmark of an alicia keys video...hehe, which is mpeg4, h.264, 768kbps...and the test reported an avg. of 27fps.
right now mine works decently with the imate rom with rawframebuffer i can pause and play it (minor hiccup occurs but then its fine) much better than having to reload it every time.
but for the quality ( and use pause) i prefer use WM encoder....

It's not supported husain. But WMP10 can play it if the bitrate is not to exessive, but it will most likely be stuttery/jerky. It is after all the DVD format and requires hefty processing power to be smooth. Best bet IMHO is to use an encoder and use Divx or Xvid at whatever bitrate suits your needs. Anything between 500 - 768 kbps will look like DVD quality on a PPC QVGA device @320x240 resolution. :wink:

Thanks m8; have you managed to get rtsp working on tytn? I have tried with various degrees of transcoding with VLC on my PC using VOD (RTSP protocol) which works fine on other pc over wifi around the house; although the video streaming client that comes with my MDA vario 2 does not recognise the stream, Has anyone had any sucess playing any RTSP stream? Thanks in advance!

I use PocketDivX Encoder 0.3.60, to convert using 2 pass xvid and b frames, and TCPMP, and the results were truly stunning on my old Kjam.
Whatever I try with the new Tytyn, does not even come close to the performance I was getting on my old device.
Does any one have any suggestions or recommend a successful encoding method that actually works on the Tytyn. I would like to hear from anyone who has managed to get a playback quality the same as the Kjam/Wizard i.e smooth video without loss of lipsync or jerky framerate.

It's not all bad, but I can't find any workaround for the meantime. Look out for The CorePlayer (The new TCPMP), hopefully when released, it will address these issues we have discovered. Meantime I am using 'ImToo_DVD 2 Ipod Converter' , which converts to high quality Mp4 format and plays back just fine for now and is definately on par with Divx/Xvid AVI encoding at 768kbps! It also converts a whole film in practically 20 mins plus compared to PocketDivx_Encoder or DVDx.
I have tried the Im too to ipod converter, and have had some very pleasing results.
Could you possibly let me know what settings you have checked/unchecked in TCPMP, for optimum playback of the resulting mp4 files?

yeah I had a good experience converting to mpeg4 except the filesize was much larger (almost twice the size as divx) is this the norm cause of divx compression?
MPEG4 Videos in TCPMP
Personally, I use the following settings for ImTOO DVD to iPod Converter:
Video Bit rate:512 or 768 (difference is negligable but size is better @ 512kbps)
Audio Bit Rate:64
Sample rate:22050
Channels:2
Video Size:320x240
Profile: iPod MPEG-4 Movie (*.mp4)
Zoom:Full (keep aspect ratio)
Split:Infinite (though it's nice to have a DVD encoded in the chapters it came in - TCPMP will play them in the correct order if saved as 'playlist')
**Do Check the Audio settings (under the Menu bar) as your DVD will probably have options for differnt Audio i.e English.
I know more settings are available, but this is a short-term fix for me (with acceptable results for me) until the new 'CorePlayer' is released.
In TCPMP the settings really don't make much of a difference either, but just make sure you have 'Video' set to 'Rawframebuffer' mode. I have found that all AVI and MP4 playback without major gripes, but the MP4 gets better results whilst benchmarking using 'ATI decoder'. Fat load of good that does you when it comes to playback though (back to rawframebuffer mode).
P.S. for smaller filesizes, just reduce the video bit rate like you would in AVI encoding.

I use Rawframeuffer mode, but GDI will do also. Though benchmarking yields better results in Rawframebuffer mode for me.
I'm using TCPMP. I set ATI IMAGEON Decoder on.
When it start, the screen is not viewable.
But I press the action button, when the movie plays it is normal.
When I paused and resume, video play with low frame rate.
I goto Option, Speed, Select 100%, it's normal.

select one to the RTSP formats. works for most but still not all videos.
hi. i just try to copy the files in windows directory. no way. no video, no audio.
very curios if i download a wmv9 test file and open it with tcmp or corepl it works correctly. but if i wanna stream from maxdome.com it dont work ???

Well I tried to open a dvx movie with tcpmp and I could not get anything but few purple lines.... and the pro2 freezed.
The same movie with the same tcpmp works perfecly on my old htc touch!

im having loads of issues with core player so much i have stopped using it
i purchased it and it plays everything but it just laggs and stutters along so much its un watchable
any tips on how to sort it out would be great, i keep hearing its the muts nuts of media players but so far ive struggled with it
on one file its played 265 frames dropped 1923 and a FPS of 3.63 this is an mpeg4 files 800 x 480 avc h264

Same lag and stutters overhere. Any solutions out there allready?
Default mediaplayer suddenly stopped working on my TP2, though the quality was way better then the core player's. Too bad it doesn't work no more.
can anyone help with this after paying for core player it wont play anything with out stuttering along
everything used to lag for me in coreplayer, including videos but if i switch the audio settings to higher priority for mp3 files they play without a hitch. now if only i can find out how to do the same for videos
Add me to the list of VERY unsatisfied results with Coreplayer on the TP2... it absolutely SUCKS. BIG TIME. Laggy and crappy... how is a man suppose to watch all those great videos stuttering!
I had the same issue (laggy, ...) a couple of months ago. I sent an email to CorePlayer support and got this answer back :
"Hello,
This is a known issue and we are working with several people on trying to track it down and are hopeful to have it included with the next release. I can offer you a full refund if you would like.

They expect to release the new version by the end of this month.

Coreplayer is running great on my TP2. Watched 2 movies today and the video looked great and frames were solid. Honestly its the best thing i did for my TP2 yet. I dont believe it will handle 800x480 but a little bit lower resolution should still be fine and the video scales very well. REFUND!!!
So I just sent my refund request for Coreplayer. It has a bug with Tv-Out causing it to show a blue flicker. Also it has no real hardware support yet. The best thing I found was the Touch HD gui encoder program. It puts your videos into formats the built in players can use and those do have hardware support. So while coreplayer is a great app its not for the TP2.
Disable DirectDraw in TCPMP. Use GDI mode.
I am not sure if the following has any effect when DirectDraw is disabled, but this is the way I have it:
Select Options\Settings, then click on "Select page" and select DirectDraw.
You will see three options. Only select the one that says "use blitting instead of overlay"
This worked for me...
So far I can't get video to play nice with TCMPC - no matter what settings I try (ie: all of them), video is jerky and drops a ton of frames.
I d/led Kinoma (free) which is good for nothing, cos of its limite3d codecs. But you can't try out the full version without buying it.
Anybody tried on the TP2 and got good quality playback with MP4/H264 etc etc?

I know the old core player works if you switch the video mode to GDI.
I have read the newer one works if you switch the video mode to bitmap or bitblit (?)
I have the pay version of Kinoma, I'm extremely pleased with it...but I've only watched a couple short MP4's on it. I can say though I didn't see any issues at all with them...
I use SBP TV and Wunderadio for my tv and radio fix, works alright so far.

I'm pretty certain this isn't down to the processor in the TP2. I ahve a four (five)) year old Palm TX and that plays anything I throw at it (via TCMPC).

CorePlayer sucks balls for AVC codecs. Do not buy it for that! I have Final Fantasy Advent Children encoded at 800x480 @ ~1.2Mbit and Coreplayer can't handle it at all. It's running maybe 0.1 FSP. Now on the other hand if I just play it through HTC's Media Player it runs great!
I did purchase Kinoma Play and I absolutely love it!!

I am quite new to the Windows Mobile scene buying the new HTC HD2 (Leo).
I am looking to convert movie files from .AVI to .MP4 for my HD2 but I was wondering.
1) What is the best converter to use for a Mac.
2)What is the best settings. I.e. Bitrate, Audio, fps, kbps and so on.
I have tried a couple of settings but really have no clue to the best settings.

As for a MAC program - I would use Handrake.
All just my personal settings - others will of course, have other views.

If you read my original reply, I'm using files that I already have for my iPhone. some of which I've converted, others that I've downloaded.
So I've not really wasted any time. I was simply offering an option to the OP.
The main reason I added that it was my opinion, was so that others didn't need to add how things COULD be done differently, just for the sake of it.
now the OP has at least 2 options - Just use the avi's or re-encode ( or grab h.264 files from other sites).

Can I ask you which player do you use.
I have movies on my sd card and with Coreplayer I get error message "File not found!\Storage (FFFFFFF8)". And with Windows media player I get error "Cannot play the file". Movie plays just fine from internal memory but that one lacks space.
Any advise would be much appreciated.
I forgotten to mention that the codec is Xvid.
I have tried playing some of my .avi formatted movies and I get errors with windows media player and I have tried a movie I d/l in .mp4 and both album and media player will play it but the screen is grey with sound and every now and then the picture will come on.
I'm guessing due to wrong settings.
I am just looking for the best settings to get smooth play and clearest viewing. I'm not too fussed with size as I have a large enough card.

I have movies on my sd card and with Coreplayer I get error message "File not found!\Storage (FFFFFFF8)". And with Windows media player I get error "Cannot play the file". Movie plays just fine from internal memory but that one lacks space.
Any advise would be much appreciated.
I forgotten to mention that the codec is Xvid.

what version of coreplayer are you using?
anyway try 1.3.6. it should work

If you read my original reply, I'm using files that I already have for my iPhone. some of which I've converted, others that I've downloaded.
So I've not really wasted any time. I was simply offering an option to the OP.
The main reason I added that it was my opinion, was so that others didn't need to add how things COULD be done differently, just for the sake of it.
now the OP has at least 2 options - Just use the avi's or re-encode ( or grab h.264 files from other sites).

I am using the same mate, I had all my AVI files converted to my old iPhone and I have found that they play great on my HTC HD2, infact I think they look even better with bigger screen, But that's just my opion.
The converter I used was download from the Pirate Bay and it's free from their home page VioVideoConverter
I'm not actually using coreplayer.
I did have coreplayer on my HTC Touch HD but i'm seeing about just utilising the album player and windows media player.
Any of the guys using HD2 can test these videos and let me know if they work fine or have problems playing?

I'm using the last Coreplayer.
But I figured if it works for you it should for me to.
So I figured out that if I run movie from Resco explorer or built in explorer the problem is still there but if I run it from Coreplayer via open command the movie works.
So there must be a problem how explorer sends a location path to the coreplayer on HD2.
Is this only me or do you experience the same behavior to?

All three files play, but they seem a bit jerky in places. They're not the best samples to test video with.
They suffer from artifacts in quite a few place using WMP, and in Core Player, they are jerky. Personally, I wouldn't suffer watching them, but they do play.
It looks like you used isom advanced video codec. I find that h.264 gives superb results.

Well, they are done using x264, AVC is just a subset of it. Plays fine on the PC, but I have no HD2 to test yet, so need some help.
Hmm...I'm using mencoder/winmenc to encode, so can't just update without the coders of mencoder updating. Mencoder is in turn a derivative of x264 if i read correctly. Meanwhile I will do some research on a GUI for x264.exe. I've used mencoder for most of my encodes so far on other phones, and it's been pretty good to me.
Here's another two encodes, this time with lesser (only 1) ref-frames, and using the latest version of the mencoder.exe....do let me know if it's better/worse. One is with the [email protected] profile (which i guess will have trouble), the other is with the good old [email protected] profile.

I am using the PS3 pre-settings then changes the video size to 800x480. It's great quality and plays smooth but the file size jumps from 700mb to 1.8g so any idea's on how to bring that down???

Your bitrate is too high.
If you're converting standard def media, 1200-1800 should be more than enough.
Also, if the resolution of the source is less than 800x480 in the first place, don't waste space trying to up the resolution. Re-encode at the original resolution.

They played much smoother for me on my desktop compared to on the phone.

Both seemed to play better than than the preivous encodes in WMP - no artifacts. Looked nice & smooth.
Core Player still struggled - very jerky.
Would be much easier to guage a non-animation/less dark sample.
