Wifi-Modem - Networking

Hi,
My house is Wi-fi enabled (i.e. we have a wifi-router connected to our broadband) and I can surf the internet from my M3100. I do not have a wifi-card for my PC, and was wondering if there is a way to use my phone as a bridge? E.g. I'd like to connect my phone to my PC via the USB cable, and connect my phone to the internet via wi-fi with the net result of being able to access the internet from my PC.
Firstly, is this possible? Secondly if it is possible with wmodem then I appear to have a problem, for when I run wmodem (with active sync closed/disabled), then connect the USB cable to my PC, I do not get the 'found new hardware' box, and I can't get the USB modem driver to install (trying to manually add new hardware and browse to the .inf file does not work - it doesn't seem to see any driver in the inf). I'm using windows XP.
Any help you can offer will be appreciated,
Steve

cant get usb to send internet to pda!!!

I have searched everywhere (here and on other sites) and it seems like if I tell the activesync to pass through to the internet, I should have internet on my pda when connected via usb...
This is not happening! I went through all options and used a few troubleshooting things that nobody seems to mention (like ipconfig from the ppc msdos console) and I can't figure this out at all!
I am using a wallaby (siemens sx56) plugged into my laptop, which is wirelessly connected via home network into cable modem. I put every .exe file in the program files/activesync directory on the "pass through" list of the firewall.
When activesync connects, all looks normal unless I try to get online via ie (from the pocket pc). If I go to the ppc dos prompt and try ipconfig, it reads me back 192.168.55.101 as the ip address, and 192.168.55.100 as the gateway. These are not close to my network settings. It can't ping my laptop and my laptop can't ping the ppc using the above address.
What am I missing??? I am using xda-developers operating system and activesync 3.8 on my laptop. PLEASE HELP!!!!
ps. I am planning on getting a wireless card for the ppc - might I still have this problem when I try to connect using that too??
Thanks -- AshayinFLA
wallaby's SD interface dont support SDIO which are wifi and well everything but memory SD cards require
so getting wifi will not help you
activesync have some settings related to sharing the connection
so theres no way to get this thing online (except pay for cellular service or <supposedly> through usb cable)?
That sucks!
Anyway, as for the usb thing, I looked through activesync on my laptop and the only thing i could find is where it should connect to (internet or work). I tried both with no results. Is there anything I'm missing?

Internet sharing problems, help please.

I upgraded my rom with shaps's 3.54b. I can connect to internet with phone, but it is impossible with usb cable to use it as modem.
When I try to use internet sharing it disconnect active sync and try to connect to 3g network. Sometime it can connect, but the pc cannot recognized the connection working. Any other times it cannot connect at all.
Looking for in system option on my pc i saw my phone as network device (windows mobile based device) and not like usb modem. Is it normal? Reading in other forum someone suggest me to install usb modem driver... where can i download the right driver?
Thanks
try resetting your phone before you connect it. Sometimes like you it'll connect but sometimes for me my phone says check usb connection. But i reset the phone and it works fine.

Internet via USB

I'm having this problem since a while now, cant connect my Jamin ( Prophet ) to internet via usb. it gives me some network setting error on prophet. tried to disable usb to pc advance settings ... didn't worked ...
any help ??
If you're Prophet works anything like my Kaiser, then you do need to switch on the 'internet sharing' on your device, and set it to connect via usb.
If you can't connect to the internet via usb, have you considered connecting via bluetooth?
That probably won't help, but who knows...

I've never been able to connect to the internet through USB on my Kaiser, even using the internet sharing application. The computer finds the device, but never the proper drivers to make it work. I can make it share over BT or WiFi with no problems.

Thats interesting, Jay.
May I ask if you're using a relatively new computer? I'm using a quite expensive 3-4 month Windows Vista Laptop which never required me to download any drivers to connect my laptop to the internet via internet sharing.
What you can do is try searching online for suitable drivers to install according to your computer model and make.
But hey, even if you don't find the drivers you want, know that using internet sharing via 'bluetooth' and not 'USB' is the best option. The reason why I say this is because the internet connection on your device will literally drain your battery real quick. That means that if you're connecting your phone via USB, you cannot connect your device to be charged as there is only 1 USB slot.
Now with internet sharing via bluetooth, you can keep the bluetooth and internet on which also drains the battery, but at the same time keep your device charging.
I never use internet sharing via USB but only by Bluetooth.

X1 and Internet Sharing on laptop - no drivers!

Hi,
I'm looking to use my X1 as an internet sharing device for my laptop on the go. However, I can't seem to get it to do it WITHOUT installing activesync.
So I've just plugged in my phone into my PC and it asks for a "Generic RNDIS". Do I have to install activesync to get my phone to interact with the laptop??
I just want to use it for internet sharing. I've read a lot about using bluetooth and stuff, but no solution for using just a plain USB.
Any help greatly appreciated!
THANKS
You will find internet sharing in programs folder. I does not require installation of anything (on Windows Vista).
have you tried wmwifirouter, its a great app
I use XP - and whenever I plug my phone in, it asks for the "generic RNDIS" driver
So 1) even if I switch on the Net Sharing on the phone, it does nothing.
2) Does wmwifirouter work even though it keeps asking me for the RNDIS???
No way to just import some essential drivers and then connect the phone the usual way??

I believe you could import the drivers. If you know which drivers
At what time does the mentioned message show up? When you open internet sharing? Or already when you connect the phone?
WMWifirouter is very nice, but you have to buy it. It provides USB support. And it SHOULD not require an additional driver. However, I think a "generic RNDIS" driver is not something very exotic. I think the problem is your computer. Have you tried on another one?
if xp doesnt load the needed drivers automatically then i do believe you need to install activesync. is there a reason why you dont want to install activesync?
@Firefall: This "generic RNDIS" message comes up whenever I plug in my phone and it happens to every PC i have (3 different ones).
@c_legaspi: The reason is that I dont use activesync for anything on my laptop. Additionally, activesync allows my phone only 2 PC's to attach to. Otherwise it'll ask me to "delete" a connection with a previous PC, if you see what I mean.
BTW, anyone experience the problem where one needs activesync installed before USB-charging works?? Its the case for me strangely...
i dont know about charging with only activesync but i do know there is a setting that you can choose on whether to or not to charge when connected to the pc.
yeah, i know that setting. It definitely charges when its connected to activesync. But connected to just any PC, it wont do a thing.
In contrast, my previous S710 (vox) charged even if you connected it up to a carrot
this is offtopic a bit since you're using XP but on vista or Windows7 with the supported bluetooth profile for bluetooth PAN, i would just set the phone for internet connection sharing through 3G and then set my laptop to connect through bluetooth PAN and they work fine together. no other software needed. however you're limited to using the 3G/EDGE feature only, no wifi.
wmwifirouter is a better solution if you need to connect through wifi.
if your bluetooth on your laptop can connect through Dial-up Networking (DUN), then you'll need to find out the username, password, and phone number of your carrier (it goes something like wapuser1, wap, *99***1# for Rogers Canada) and set it up with your laptop. i've been doing this on my previous phones but it seems the X1 can only connect through bluetooth PAN which is easier to set up imo but it cannot automatically connect to the internet unlike DUN.
I think the point is that you need to start the internet sharing app and choose connect before you connect the USB cable. If you connect the cable at that time, the phone installs the right drivers (the computer recognises it as a different kind of device at this point).
I have not tried this on XP, only on Vista.

I'm not sure if this help any of you, but at the moment I'm using my phone to connect to internet. I follow the instruction on Xi manual http://www.sonyericsson.com/cws/download/1/522/265/1224514276/X1__UG_1215_1000_2_EN.pdf page 31 "Using your phone as a Bluetoothâ„¢ modem".
I'm using window vista to connect my phone to pc via usb go to program internet sharing and the pc search for the driver installed and done I'm surfing
I am also trying to use the X1 as a modem without installing ActiveSync.
You can extract the RNDIS-Driver for XP from the ActiveSync-Setup:
1. uncompress setup.msi with 7zip, you get ActiveSync.cab and some other stuff
2. uncompress ActiveSync.cab with 7zip
3. now copy the files
- WceRndis.inf
- WceRndis.cat
- WceIS.inf
- wceis.cat
- usb8023Y.sys
- RNDISMPY.sys for later use
When prompted for NDIS-Driver go for the WceRndis.inf. On my XP it installed fine and gave me an additional network interface. After setting IP-Adresses for PC and phone i have a network-connection.
If you activate Internet Sharing on the phone then Windows asks again for an RNDIS-driver. This time, use the WceIS.inf. It installes the same files, i am not sure what the difference is.
Hope this helps!

Wmwifirouter USB to Wifi

Hi i have an HD2 and i want to use my internet connection from my pc with USB on the HD2 and this to Wifi...
So i put the usb cable on the hd2...set Active sync... now is can use the internet over my pc....
now i start wmwifirouter... click on usb to wifi
he is connected...but i cant get an internet acces over another device ill used over wifi....plz help... what i must set?
USB Mode Rndis and Active sync oder Rndis and Internet sharing?
On the PC what i must setting??? I have windows 7...
plz help!!
wmwifirouter is made for doing the other way around
unless your setting block this your phone will have the network connection of your pc when ever your phone is connected to activesync
if it don't then you need to make sure that your pc firewall or activesync don't block it
and that your phone is set to use my network connection rather then my isp
th problem is...if i set rndis my pc dont find the device via active sync...
i have the same problem.
Run wmwifirouter on your device and then connect it to your pc. you shouldn't need to run anything else.

Not working.i select rndis and first internet sharing...not working..second rndis active sync not working.
I have made a blog post about this issue and how to configure this mode properly. It is tricky when you don't have a guide. It works seamlessly and I have purchased wmwifirouter just to use this mode
