AJAX'd mobile IE homepage

With all the talk of AJAX at the moment, I've had a play with it in mobile IE. I wanted a local homepage that could load when I start IE and give me access to most of the services I use.
So from that homepage, I can get to:
Searching multiple search engines (Google, Wapedia, dictionary.com, etc)
My del.icio.us tags
My del.icio.us bookmarks tagged as 'mobilefavorites'
My favorite RSS feeds
And some standard "bookmarks"
I've also set it up so I can go to the full webpages or view them via Google's gwt.
I've attached a copy if anyone is interested (either to use it or just to see how it works).
To customise for your own RSS feeds, favorites and searches just edit "config.xml" - When you edit this, make sure it is valid XML (try loading it into IE to see if it displays OK - I usually forget to replace '&' with '&')

I'm working on a website that is very similar. It's not ajax yet, because i'm focusing on the lowest common denominator such as mobile phones running browsers like netfront or ones that are to slow to really run javascript code at a reasonable rate.
the site is at http://wampad.com. I'm also working on a uk centric version but i haven't released that yet.
The only thing it haven't added yet is rss feeds, but i'm working on it. The tag I use for del.icio.us bookmarks is mtag.
I'd really like to here what you think.

I am pretty sure that PIE doesnt support the xmlhttp control.... This could be why you have commented out methods like getXML and added comments like "This doesnt work in PIE"

PIE doe support the xmlhttp control (It is actually used in the code to retrieve the RSS feeds) - what it doesn't seem to support is basic authentication with the xmlhttp control.

RSS reader with podcast support for Tytn, any suggestions?

Is it just me, or are there other people having a hard time finding a news reader/podcast downloader that actually works on a Tytn?
I want to be able to store a lot of shows from the Australian ABC radio site http://www.abc.net.au/services/podcasting/ for later enjoyment.
Can anyone recommend a program that they use on a Tytn and are happy with?

i would love to know one as well

i use hubdog. works very well with BBC podcasts and they have a lot of channels too

works really well, its not the perfect podcast app, but i love not having to cary my iPod around and being able to "sync" any time any where.

It not only does the job, it also looks slick too. Very different from the rest.

But I'm not entirely happy with it - I have one complaint. I wish there was a way to limit the amount of "articles" kept in memory - some of the Podcasts I list to are large, and there are a lot of them. Even when I delete enclosures, pRSSreader downloads them again.

Hi everyone, first post in here.
There is a program called Egress which will definitely do the job for you.

It is an RSS reader that you can customise exactly to your particular choice. It does allow for podcast catching and offline reading, among other tasks.
I have it running on my HTC Hermes (JasJam skin) and it works just fine.
The software is not that expensive, around 10 usd is I recall properly, and the developer offers you lifetime upgrades, not bad eh?

I forgot to mention that pRSSreader is FREE!

If you add the feed via your account on the hubdog website it has optional username and password for authenticated sites.
I found Hubdog to be a steep learning curve but worth the patience. I've got my favourite podcasts, vodcasts, headline feeds and flickr photos all stored away so my JasJam will be able to entertainment if I ever get a free moment.
I think JasJam is popular because it makes us feel like we are in touch and in control where ever we are. Hubdog adds yet another dimension with a bounty of multimedia files that we can have without paying cellular data access rates.

How do you delete stuff in hubdog? I deleted them, but it kept them in my enclosure and thus didn't download the new stuff... I'm finding hubdog to be difficult to navigate.

Yea, i'm also finding that WMP doesn't like to stream any of the vodcasts...plus it seems bloated

Hubdog is slick overall, but what I'm having trouble with is getting rid of what I've already listened to. I wish once you've listened to something you can delete both the media and the "metadata" - the screen that shows you what the media was. I'm having a heck of a time figuring out what I have and haven't heard, and navigating thru the interface to figure that out.
I'm amazed there aren't other good alternatives out there, so maybe I just need to experiment with this app and find a workaround.

Application for receiving news?

Is there a free application that I can install for news articles on my Wizard?
What I have in mind is similar to RSS readers. I would connect the phone to my computer vis USB. The phone would grab all the news articles that i am interested from the internet. Whenever I have time, I would just pull up those news articles on the phone and read them.

It's freeware that lets you download RSS and Atom feeds and read them off-line. Learned about it from a thread here, but I've never used it myself.

If that doesn't get the job done for you, you might want to drop 20 bucks on Spb's "Insight." It's what I use.
You can create your own custom XML templates for it, so you're not limited to RSS or Atom feeds. You can pull down just about anything you want from any web site, if you can figure out how to parse it.
Careful though. It's addictive.

Hello to everybody. I would like to know if there are some free RSS software better than the RSS Hub included in our HD2.
And, just to know, is it possible in RSS Hub to delete and not to flag as read a RSS header?Bevause I see that in this way a lot of old info remain inside the program...

SBSH GoNews is pretty good. Nice interface.
SPB News2.0 is also nice... seems to download more full feeds for some reason (even though this shouldn't be the case). I type the same URL into GoNews and I get just headlines and excerpt with a link to the webpage. Somehow I get the whole txt on SPB News (on certain feeds)... It also takes a little longer to update
Both are paid apps and support photos and icons... are you prepared to pay or looking for free stuff?

I purchased Illium Newsbreak ages ago and loved it's simplicity and capability. That is what is bundled with the HD2 ...
Maybe I don't use enough RSS to know what's needed but it was excellent for the feeds and podcasts I subscribed to.

I've tried pretty much every RSS reader there is and BY FAR the best one out there is Yomomedia (google it for link). Set it up on your desktop, feeds come through on your device. Best of all- its free! The best and most-used app on my HD2....

DOes anyone know of World news feeds that have most of the txt included? I would rather read more than just the headlines...

yes, I tried Yomomedia, but it's not so instinctive and immediate. Maybe at the end RRS Hub it's the best choice...simple and effective even if I don't if it's possible to cancel the rss avoiding an increasingly amount of database. By far I see I can only flag "unread"...

GoNew Touch is the best

SBSH GoNews Touch - because of
1. catergory support : essential when you have a huge number of subscribe feeds...
2. Google Reader sync: i can just subscribe to Rss from my browser and let goNews pick it up in the mobile where i do the reading...

It seams like everybody has theri own favorite. I have been using Egress for a long time now and it satisfies all my needs, even on the HD2

but I think it doesn't have offline capability though...
but it does make up in the UI... excellent and fluid iPhone like...
and its $9.99 only...

I have tried some software that you recommended to me. So I give you my opinion about them...
-Egress: good, with some small bug but nothing serious. You can delete item and customize a lot of things. The GUI is not so cool but friendly and easy. If you long click on the feed a popup menù with some options appears. No thumbnails download. The software is not updated since 2008 and it's a pity.
-Yomomedia:nice graphics for main page but few options and not intuitive for settings. If you long click on the feed nothing happens, for example a menù to choose options.
-Gonews Touch: good features, easy, nice GUI, you can see also the thumbnails of the feeds, BUT a big issue also discussed on their internal forum: for a quite big numbers of devices (amongst them HD2) the downloading of feeds is VERY VERY slow (and when I say slow, believe me, up to 5-6 times RSS Hub for instance) and this is a major issue. The developer recognized that it could be a problem inside its core and he's working on a fix but after 3 weeks nothing. So not recommended at the moment. It's a pity because it would be a good software for us.
-RSS Hub in-built: unfortunately Iliumsoft has apparently stopped the developing of this program 2 years ago and even if it is good and simple, it is too simple in my opinion. I mean that a refresh for GUI and options should be done, and not making it heavier or slower of course...
These are naturally my personal opinions I wanted to share with you: I know that everyone has his/her preferred software but effectively each one of them lacks in something and I hope that developers could start again their work on those softwares because even if RSS is not the main reason to buy a HD2, a good one can make the difference in customer experience.

Tried most of them and apart from Egress they all freeze and certain points (usually on BGR) so I have stuck with Egress for the last couple of years and am very pleased with it.
(I also loved AvantGo - such a shame they've stopped supporting it.)

You did not mention SPB News. It is fast and complete exept no categories which I can live with. It allows you to import OPML so it is easy when migrating from another RSS reader. Try it.

I just use google reader on my PC, and m.google reader on my HD2.
No offline option and cannot sort mobile to show oldest first.

I use BeyondPod (http://www.beyondpod.mobi/) though mainly for downloading podcasts rather than reading news though it can do this - also has a pretty useful built in scheduler for updates, along with built in player which remembers position, and deletes your podcast once you've listened to it.
Set mine to update at 6am each day and I have a new set of podcasts to listen to on the train into work.

About RSS software in general... I only use RSS in my phone to download and listen a few podcasts. I gave RSS Hub a try, but it seems to overwrite old podcasts with the new ones. As I wanted to preserve the old podcasts until I listened them, I moved back to Beyond Pod. Besides my problem with the scheduler, I do recomend Beyond Pod for listening podcasts.

How do you get the full article downloaded with Newsbreak or SPB News??

Hi all, I know you can get some rss feeders that purport to download the entire article so you can read it all even offline, but I have not as yet found out how to get either Newsbreak (which I am not sure if it does) or SPB News (which does but I cant figure it out) to do this... can anyone please help me with easy to follow instructions so I can get the full article to read off line etc... thanks in advance...

Spb News can, sort of...
I am using Spb News on my HD2. It is not (and by far) the best RSS reader out there but for a selected number of feeds, there are indeed "templates" which will fetch you the full articles instead of what would otherwise just look like a worthless bunch of tweets. Here is a short extract of the developer's documentation:
Templates in Spb Insight project are intended to download and parse web documents of different kind, mostly news sites. Since different web sites have very different page formatting, a template needs to be created for every site. A template contains information about the site and code to help parse content, clean it up from menus, advertisements and so on.
The template language was created with easiness, popularity and conformity to internet standards in mind. Wide-spread internet language Jscript (a.k.a. ECMAScript) was chosen as the basic language, wrapped with XML to enable metadata processing, such as channel names etc.
One template can contain definitions for multiple channels, as there are usually several channels on one site that has the same formatting and the parsing code for them should be shared.​
Despite the recent release of the renamed v2.0 (from Insight to News) bringing next to nothing new, Spb has seemingly moved their resources away from this product so that the "channels" are no longer kept up-to-date. It is now essentially a matter of trial&error to find out those feeds from the online catalogue that still can return you the full articles, or, you program yourself a template. A third option is to use one of the user-contributed templates directly from the forum.
