Keep VPN connection alive? - 8525, TyTN, MDA Vario II, JasJam General

Hello,
I'm using my TyTn on our wifi network, for which it requires a VPN connection as well. Everything works BUT... only the applications "Internet Explorer" and "Messaging" will cause the VPN connection to be made. The other applications don't. If the VPN connection is inactive for 30s, it closes down.
I can use other applications over this connection (Skype, MSN, Opera, ...) when I first launch PIE or Messaging. But oddly enough, the VPN connection is closed after 30s, even if there is an application using it. The solution would be to keep PIE or Messaging active.
I found commercial applications to keep a gprs connection alive, but would they work for the VPN connection (I don't know if pinging a server will keep the VPN alive)?
Any suggestions?
Thanks!
Jörg

I don't know although I am currently looking into this matter, to keep vpn from shutting down ! Vpn by anchor Inc has not open to prevent standby and causes a network error when it stops working, it's been a few years or so since you posted this thread and no one has replied except me so I suggest that this is a task to difficult for anyone on xda to solve. :crying:

Best IPsec VPN client?

I am testing BlueFire 2.3.0 client for more than a week now. Overall it is very good - it does its job done. But after running it extensively for a week I discovered several issues with it, mostly cosmetic, but they are really annoying. Especially, if you want to have Direct Push. Those issues are:
1. "Save credentials for auto-reauthentication" does not work - you have to enter your password every time you connect.
2. It does not reconnect on its own, if it looses the connection (i.e. EDGE/GPRS goes down temporarily)
3. Detection of disconnect is not very reliable - sometimes when you loose signal and GPRS connection wants to disconnect, it cannot do it because of VPN still thinks it is connected and prevents GPRS from reconnecting.
4. Extensive use of on-screen push-buttons instead of soft-keys. And soft-keys are mapped to rarely used functions, like About - poor interface design. It woldn't be so bad, if the VPN client was not requiring user interaction to reconnect and authenticate...
5. After several minutes of standby, it brings its window on top of Today screen, kinda like letting user know that he better check his tunnel/connection, because it could be already disconnected... In most cases it is not true, because the unit wakes half the way up every several minutes to check email or send a heart-beat packet, which keeps connection up (this only applies to GPRS/EDGE connection and not WiFi, unfortunatelly). But sometimes the VPN tunnel becomes dead, and you have to click "Disconnect", "Connect" and enter your password again.
Ok, that is my impression about BlueFire VPN client. Now the question is - is there any better IPsec client for PPC (WM5), which allows you to have Direct Push email over IPsec all day long without your intervention to check the connection status and reconnect manually?
Thanks for your time.
Hi!
Where did you get version 2.3?? I just can find 2.2 on their website...
I wasn't able to connect to my uni's Cisco VPN with version 2.2 and had a lot of issues with other VPN clients (NCP and Antha kind of disrupted the connection manager) - so basically I haven't found any client which is working properly. Hope that will change with one of the next versions...

Apparently, even though their web site says 2.2, they are giving out 2.3 here for trial:

As of other VPNs for me so far:
NCP killed all my connections - GPRS and WiFi didn't work anymore. It is overcomplicated and I had to uninstall it to get my connections to work properly again.
Antha is promising, especially its DPD (Dead Peer Detection) feature, but I cannot connect with it to our VPN server no matter what I do. I copied all the settings from Bluefire, which can connect, but stil no success.

how to keep vpn connection

My phone is TYTN II. I have configured vpn connection and exceptions, where if I type internal address in browser (192.168.0.*/*) then I see my phone is connecting to isp and then to vpn gateway.
With Internet Explorer it is working fine, Im happy with that, its a bit different when Im using Opera, I have to refresh few times the address till phone establish connection to vpn.
But it is not working with putty. Sometimes I have to urgently login to shell in my internal network and it is not possible. Im opening inetrnal address with, lets say, IE, then I fast opening putty and if Im lucky I can establish connection with shell, but then it loosing vpn connection after short time and Im loosing connection with shell.
My question is - how to force phone to establish connection to vpn and keep it alive? Is it a question of registery or maybe some software?
Thank you
Regards
You're lucky. I can't even get a VPN connection to stay active. I noticed you said you created exceptions. How do you do that?
Basically, I just need it to work with Remote Desktop.

Convince Windows Live to use WiFi

Hi all,
maybe someone has a solution that does not involve totally disabling GPRS...
Every other app (TwitToday, Active Sync, Pocket IE, Outlook, GPS update, etc pp) prefers the WiFi connection over existing GPRS/EDGE connection, except Windows Live Sync/Messenger: Both of them constantly ignore the WLAN and instead open a GPRS/EDGE connection...
How do I force it (or, if easier, the whole OS) to only use GPRS then when no Wifi is available?
Thanks,
Marco
I achieved this by making everything use Work Network.....it uses GPRS when no WiFi is available only.
On the subject (not wishing to hijack the thread though) I have a similar issue. All apps work fine through wireless, however Windows Live (Messenger etc) launches and connects to GPRS/HSDPA/EDGE when a wifi connection is not present, but then errors with a "no connection" message. All other apps work fine in GPRS/EDGE/HSDPA mode but this...ideas?
Doesn't work
When I say in the Connections control panel that all apps should use something other than E-Plus Web (either My ISP or My Work Network), then MSN whines about connectivity problem.
When I leave it at work network and disconnect wifi, I get system error with all internet using apps - it "can't connect with the current settings".
So, I have to leave the "connect to the internet using..." to Eplus Web... then, all apps, including Pocket IE use WLAN if available, but only MSN still connects GPRS :/
Any idea? Why does f***ing MSN not offer what connection to choose, if it can't obey the system settings?

VPN Connection PPTP disconnect

hi all,
I want to use PPTP vpn connection to my work
The PPTP vpn connection is established successfully.
However if I switch to an application which would generate internet traffic (such as internet explorer) my PPTP connection drops.
What is the problem ?
thanks
That's normal. Happens to me everytime. When you access your providers' ISP through updating weather, stocks or starting IE, it will boot your VPN connection. For me, it is do to my service provider.
so there is nothing to do to resolve this issue ? i would like to use VPN access to my work to check email with Internet Explorer ..
You need to add work network exceptions to force required types of traffic to go through the VPN tunnel. Plenty of relevant discussions around, just google it. Here's a link to one particular overview:

VPN over public wifi

Hello!
I was on a vacation abroad recently and tried out something novel for me: To use VPN while on a public wifi. Another neatness was that the PPTP VPN server was running on my ASUS RT-AC66U router back home, an endpoint I'm pretty comfortable with
However, there was one thing that griped me: Whenever I established a connection to a wireless network, Viber or Facebook Messenger or something would pop up a message before I could establish the VPN connection. Now, since I don't know how these services work, I don't know if there was a brief period in there that my device communicated messages and credentials in the open. Hopefully there remains some sort of encryption certificates from a previously negotiated session, but I'd like to be confident that it's not possible to send unencrypted credentials or messages.
Ideally, the phone should remain passive until all traffic is routed through the secure tunnel. Is there any way to do this? Android introduced "Always-On VPN" that sounds like it claims to be what I'm looking for. However, it only works for L2TP as far as I understand.
The usage case scenario here allows for no data by default/block all ports/route everything locally. Then if wifi connection is established, open port for VPN connection, establish VPN, then open all ports. Presently I've switched to OpenVPN also, and installed the "OpenVPN for Android" application. I have no problems establishing a VPN connection, it's just tightening any holes I'm interested in.
