1 text message = 2 messages - JAM, MDA Compact, S100 General

Can someone please help me.
I had to do a hard start on my phone because it was messed up, anyways when i write a text message after a few words it comes up as 2 messages. why is that and what can i do to solve this problem.
Thank you

if you use any unicode characters in the msg, the character limit is automatically reduced to 80 per msg as unicode takes up twice the space.

O2 Atom Exec - text message length

Any one know if you can change the text message character length?
Most new phones have a maximum of 400 characters or something, my atom only allows 160 characters.
Is it not allowing you to write more than 160 characters?
Default is 160 characters per text message, looks like it cannot be altered (well anyway, I didn't see that option in SKTools).
But of course you should be able to send SMS way more than 160 characters.
Yeah I can like as long an SMS as I want but it's broken into 160 character parts to be sent. That's how SMS is done by carriers I think.
yeah if u type more than 160 characters it'll send as 2 messages and so on. But i can receive text messages longer than 160 as one message.
Standard SMS per message for any phone is 160 char.
O2 Atom Exec allows you to type more than 160...which means u are being bill more than 1 sms as long u write more than 160...
if say u type 200... the other party will receive 200...on the back-end of the telecom will take it as 2 sms...

Extended Text Message Question

Hello everyone. I apologize if this question has been asked already.
On my "dumb" phones like LG etc. in Verizon network, I can send text message by 1,000 characters w/ extended text message. I think it sends multiple messages encoded in a special way to get past the 160 character SMS limit.
But, on my Windows Mobile devices, I can only send/receive 160 char messages, and when I receive 161+ char message, I receive a notice saying that the text message has been modified to be compatible with this device.
Why is "dumb phone" so much better to handle extended text messages but Windows Mobile cannot receive? It's a little bit oxymoronic, don't you think? Is there any way to enable extended text messaging functionality to windows mobile devices? Thanks in advance!
odd when i go over 160 it tells me that 2 sms's will be sendt maybe it's a setting
or something in your rom
I can send, but it doesn't compile them all into one single extended text message. So recipient receive many text message all at one time... they say it's annoying.
Then, if they send me extended text message, I receive 160 char, and after that.. it break away and say "extended message has been truncated due to a lack of support for enhanced messaging on this device."

ATT Tilt 2 texting limiting to 160 characters, anyway to change that?

Hi all,
Ive noticed for my ATT tilt 2, the text messaging limits it to only 160 characters. When i go over the 160 character limit, i dont see the rest of the message and im not sure if whether the characters past 160 characters are sent or not. Is there anyway to change this? Thanks in advance for any replies.
Cheers!
My understanding is that this is a limitation of SMS in general, not your device or carrier. If your message is greater than 160 characters, then the message is sent as 2 SMS, rather than 1.
the above poster is correct ::highfive:: guythathasateddbearforasig!
Hi ohyeahar,
First off, thanks for the reply. On my old SE phone, when i send over the 160 character limit it does automatically send two text message and it shows that i sent 2 text message in my sent message folder. However, for my tilt 2, it just shows only 1 text message and it cuts off at 160 characters. So im not sure if it actually sent 2 text messages or if it only sent 1 and it just sent at the cutoff of 160 characters.
Any idea with that or how to change that so if its past 160 character, it will automatically send 2 messages instead of 1?
Thanks!

Don't know what you mean, dude. I just sent myself a message that's 170 characters to see what you mean. See the following screenshots. The sequence of "1234567890" (which is characters number 161 through 170) appears to me as the recipient and as the sender.
This is consistently shown via the main SMS tab in Manila, the SMS tab inside the unified communications tab in Manila, the WinMo default threaded messaging window, and in the sent items of the WinMo default messaging app.
the tilt 2 will allow you to type up to 800 characters and it will split it up into 5 sms messages to the end user
now if you want a large message all as 1, send it as an mms, i dont remember how large you can type in mms format, but its more then 800 characters, and it will be all as 1 big message.
I may know what you mean, and see what you mean as it's happening on my Tilt 2. In the Sense UI messaging application (if you slide to Messages, touch it, and reply) it only shows 160 characters of the message you type. But if you actually go to All Messages, and from the Inbox click the person who you sent it to, it shows the full message. I believe it's just a screen limitation with the Sense UI, but the full message should have been sent.
Thanks for all the inputs guys! It was very helpful.
ianderson_76: thanks, that was the problem. After going to all messages, I can see the full text being sent and received.
Cheers!

I have a Tilt 2 on ATT...and I noticed that there's a message that pops up everytime I send a text in TF3D...
It a confirmation that the message was sent. It's really stupid and I want it gone...but can't figure out how to delete it...
Any thoughts?

how to remove sms 160 character limit? PLEASE HELP

Hi
I just installed duttys 6.5.3 rom on my hd2 and I’ve been flashing for a while I noticed something weird happened with my text message sms character limit. I use to always be able to type as much as I want in a text window beyond 160 characters and send it off. It didn’t matter to me that the recipient would receive it in broken messages.
However just recently I no longer have this option, when i start my text it will not let me go beyond 160 characters. Also when I’m typing the little indicator that gauges how many characters I input going beyond 160 is gone as well. Is there something I missed while flashing? Is there a setting somewhere or registry edit to remove this limit? I have been flashing for a year and have never experienced this with my touch hd or my hd2 until now. PLEASE HELP!

I don't think you can do anything about that, pretty certain that's a limitation of the protocol itself.

There is no string that you I modify? I want to know if others have the same problem...
No. As said before it is a limitation of the protocol itself. Use drop box public folder or something similar.

Character Count Thresholds
The character limits for individual concatenated SMS messages results in various thresholds for which additional individual concatenated SMS messages will be required to support sending a larger overall message:
GSM encoding:
1 standard SMS message = up to 160 characters
2 concatenated SMS messages = up to 306 characters
3 concatenated SMS messages = up to 459 characters
4 concatenated SMS messages = up to 612 characters
5 concatenated SMS messages = up to 765 characters
etc. (153 x number of individual concatenated SMS messages)
UTF-16 encoding:
1 standard SMS message = up to 70 characters
2 concatenated SMS messages = up to 134 characters
3 concatenated SMS messages = up to 201 characters
4 concatenated SMS messages = up to 268 characters
5 concatenated SMS messages = up to 335 characters
etc. (67 x number of individual concatenated SMS messages)
Implications
These thresholds are an important consideration for a number of reasons including billing, and the programmatic interfacing with SMS gateways.
Generally, telephone companies count individual concatenated SMS messages separately even though they are being recombined at the phone into a single message. This means a GSM encoded message containing 180 characters could potentially invoke a charge for two SMS messages, even if the sender/recipient only sees a single message.
When interfacing with a telephone company’s SMS gateway programmatically, there may be limits on the number of individual concatenated SMS messages which can sent as part of a single message. For example, Clickatell’s documentation states that messages sent through their API should not contain more than 3 concatenated SMS segments. This may require limiting the number of character input in a web application or service which sends SMS messages via an API in such a manner.
While it may seem elementary, it is important to point out that SMS messages are always in one particular encoding; i.e. fully GSM or fully UTF-16. For example, a period character (”.”) takes up 7-bits in a GSM SMS message. The same character may exist in a Unicode SMS message, but takes up 16-bits, even it is representing the same character."

Mobile companies set their limits, one may allow you to send up to 6 combined messages, others 10 for example.
Either way there is nothing you can do with your phone that will change this.
