WIFI Spectrum analyser, is there one? - Networking

Bit of an obscure request but any thoughts as to if it is possible to use the Wifi in a Tytn to scan for any wireless signals in the 2.4Ghz wifi band.
I already use sniffi but it only shows channelised info.. I need something that can show sigs from video senders etc in the nearby area...
If I'm trying to get a flakey router talking to a pc it would be nice to be able to see what else is around..
Any thoughts chaps...
Phil

Not possible on your tytn... it will only see IEEE 802.11 packets.
Google "wi-spy" for a cheap and nice solution, but not using your PDA

Wi Spy looks interesting, not sure if I can justify the cost at the mo' ....
Looks like I'll have to carry on just using sniffi for now as mini stumbler doesn't seem to work, well doesn't see the wireless chip/card in the Tytn and I can't seem to find anything else better..
Will think about WiSpy in the new year.... Cheers

HTC Wizard as Access Point?

It would be really neat to be able to put my Wizard into 'host' mode on the wifi, and share my EDGE access out to wifi clients nearby. It'd be like having my own wifi hotspot in my pocket.
Is this possible?
this post and most others like them gets ignored by most of this forum.
Or so it seems from my month on and off reading.
Ofcoarse this is possible?
will software or service agreements allow it? most likly not.

I wonder why, I think its a nice thing to have, and there exists AP with 3g cards like LINKSYS WRT54G3G
/L
with software it would be possible i think
just a matter of making the device rount
the wifi to the connection
but edge and even 3g is not really fast enough to share with anybody without comming down to a crawl
which is prob why there have been no demand and so
no developing for the field
gprs/edge > BT > PC >WiFi > WLAN
easy to do, conect to data service throught your computer with BT or USB then in settings share internet connection (via Wifi) with other users.

another painfull way, but may work for u.
I think it has something to do either with no one caring/caring about terms of service possibly.

TyTN as a wireless router

Hi,
I was searching the forum but haven't found any useful info about that.
Do you know any WM5 software which can change TyTN into wireless router ?
Something like WModem, but using 3G and WiFi in the same time.
My idea is to come back home, plug the charger into my phone , run WRouter and have wireless internet connection everywhere in the flat from my mobile connected to 3G web'n'walk T-Mobile network.
What do you think ?
Cheers,
BenOne
IMHO -
no way
no driver support for that
AFAIK no application
why? power consumtion on highest power setting is terrible, and battery is soon completelly depleted, there is also neecesary to left charger in phone...
if you need wifi router (w/ NAT, firewall, VPN...) you can buy inexpensive router for few bucks and it is more compatible, more stable, more usefull, more secure, far better manageable etc...
yeah right, but for what another device if I have one ?
I am charging my tytn everyday, you know how it eats battery...
just wanted to know, it could be quite useful. cheers
U can use bluetooth on the tytn as a router with a reg hack u can connect more then one computer, not the same range and speed but it is possible.
yeah but then everybode have to have bluetooth in their notebooks. we have 3 laptops in the flat and nobody has bluetooth in it. but what then ? everybody are connecting using dial-up, like thorugh normal usb cable, but instead of it, thorugh bluetooth ?
now we have like that - I am commin back home, connect tytn to my laptop, dial-up, and wireless in my laptop is ad-hoc configured, so everybody are connecting to my machine, and modem (tytn) is shared. if tytn has wireless, I thought, that I don't have to leave my laptop all the time turned on. It could be great to leave connected to charger and that's all. All the internet and local home network could be through that. If there was a linux distribution for this phone I am pretty sure this option would be one of main in netwokr configuration...
anyway thx. just wanted to know if there is any piece of soft for that...
benOne
have you seen this official htc link: http://www.europe.htc.com/support/software/htctytn.html?lang=en
it seems it could be possible with vista... but I'm not sure...
EDIT: NO WAY... This is just wireless modem driver for vista... but not for wifi connection! Sorry!
Anyway, I'm very interested in... it could be very interesting for other connections as well... to get online a game consolle...like nintendo wii...
I really hope this dream will come true!
yeah, imagine you play in the bus online. cool!
battery problem. in this configuration I give our tytn 1 hour working on wifi and 3g used together in the same time...
anyway at home you have charger, in a car aswell, you can buy few batteries on ebay and problem resolved heh
sooo, who can start write this application ?
to which company or open source coders team should I send this idea ?
You could tether your Tytn to your laptop using either a usb cable or bluetooth, then setup an adhoc network through your laptops wifi connection. All you need to do then is do internet connection sharing between your bluetooth DUN connection and your wifi card and you should be in business to let your flat mates connect to your adhoc, which essentially turns your laptop into a router. Let me know if that helps or if you have any further questions.
I've done this myself with my mates and it works flawlessly.
Yea, I searched around a while on this way back but there is no solution that I could find.
Your best bet is to either just use PAN bluetooth, or tether just one computer over bluetooth and share your connection via wifi. It's super easy on a mac, not sure about windows.

ehehe...NO, MATE.... There's NO adsl connection where I live... So I can just use my tytn as a HSDPA modem and I use to share his connection on my PC, BUT I'm not able to share it throug wifi on my wii...
I really hope a coder could solve this... even if I'm not sure it's possible.

yeah, cheers pal, I've already written about that above. I have this kind of network at my home frome the begninnig of using tytn. What I want is to stop using my laprop as a router, my tytn has everything to be a router itself, it needs just a piece of software. This thread is only about piece of software.

Wifi on vogue maybe possible?

I know i know, the CDMA version of the vogue didnt come with the hardware.
but i read on a forum that someone tried loading the network car/wifi drivers for the bluetooth radio, and they said it worked but barely. and truth to this? anyone try doing this? Or is anyone with a spare vogue willing to do this?
I think bluetooth 3.0 is going to support wifi, the only other option is one of those SD wifi cards, unsure if they operate in Android, but since we have to run off an SD card I guess its not an option :<
Parth, where did you read this? I have never heard of this before.
what i do thats wifi-esque is set up my usb receiver to share the internet via bluetooth so that i have decent connection speed (reception in my apartment sux, so this works well)

How do you do that ?
I've got a Bluetooth USB emitter but never managed to share my internet connection through it.
I second that request for info, this sounds interesting.

AT&T HTC Pure won't connect to wifi Videophone

Have new AT&T Pure w/modified back cover for 2600 mah battery.......1100 mah standard. Loaded HTC Wifi Router (XDA, Tom Codon), 10 digit key doesn't seem to work. Have Globalinx's new CU-3000 vidoephone, with built-in wifi, which 'sees' XDA-Sharing wifi signal, but doesn't connect to it. (Lights do not change.) Cannot used Pure as hotspot. What do I change in CU-3000 config? Pure? I'm a lost newby. HELP!!
Dsims6465
The Pure used as a wifi router needs to be accessed in "ad hoc" mode rather than "access point" mode. Are you sure the CU-3000 supports this? I had a quick google but couldn't find out...
Ad-hoc hotspots and Globalinx CU-3000
Thanks, Pete_S; this videophone is very new to the world. Not much info out there, yet. I'll do some detective work and find out if it can connect ad-hoc. I surely hope so, as the 7" screen with wifi beats my AT&T Pure by a big margin. Love them both, though.
Any other info/input from anyone else?
my wifi router works just fine on my phone. used it like 2 days ago with my buddies iphone{cause some apps can only be downloaded through wifi} the videophone prolly doesnt work cause the pure has no forward facing camera.
leemoss84 you misunderstood my problem. I'm not trying to use my Pure as a Videophone......I'm trying to connect my Globalinx Videophone (portable) to my Pure over wifi. The Videophone only accesses the 'net over wifi or broadband ethernet. I want to be able to use real time video and audio telephone calling anywhere I have AT&T 3G signal. Thanks for input, anyway. You didn't have to take the time, but you did.
Pet_S you were 'on target!' My Globalinx CU-3000 doesn't function in ad-hoc mode. See my post to leemoss84. Now, who has an app that converts 3G data to wifi? Everything I've ever seen is ad-hoc. Atheros has chips that work with drastically reduced battery drain, but I'm not a manufacturer! The world needs a stand-alone app for infastructure mode. Any ideas?

[Q] 802.11a and FM transmitter

Hello all!
Here in Germany the phone is said (in a product flyer from Samsung) to be able to handle 802.11a; i have a 802.11a/b/g/n mixed network in my home and somehow the tab won't work on 5GHz. Is there any limitations or is it just a setting-thing or is the tab not intended to use 5GHz? Maybe the chip is able to work with it but they could'nt fit an antenna inside...
Also i am asking myself if there's any progress with FM reciever/transmitter usage?
The Boradcomm chip used in the tab should be capable of FM; i read a bit about it here and i know there is development in that direction. But when i open a new thread anyway i wanted to ask if there's any news on that already ;
Thanks!
Steve.

I can confirm that both T-mobile and AT&T Galaxy Tabs work very well on my 802.11n at 5.7GHz.
I've found it accidentally after running one of the WiFi scanners. Most likely yours will works as well.
Cheers!
Thanks for your reply. 5.7GHz is the highest channel we are allowed to use here.
As of now i was not able to find out how to tell the tab to use 5GHz. When i check my router it's always on 2.4 (i802.11n). Also i did not yet find a wifi scanner app that makes detailled scanning possible; maybe you can tell me which one you used!
Thanks!
Steve.
"WiFi Analyzer" works a treat.

Hi Steve,
Is your router dual band: 2.4 or 5.7, or simultaneous dual band: 2.4 and 5.7, if it's a dual band router you would need to switch the router manually to the 5.7 radio?
With my router (Netgear WNDR3700) I have two separate SSID, one for 2.4 and one for 5.7, both show when wifi scanning although I use 2.4 as it has better wall/floor penetration.
Ahoy!
I have three DIR-825 which use simultaneous dual band. I configured both SSIDs of each unit to have the same name (story of the house).
I wanted to tweak that, anyway. I will try giving seperate names.
Thanks for the hint!
Steve.
OK, WIFI Analyzer showed that i was not connected to the 5 jiggahertz network.
I now gave one BSSID to all .a peers and another to all .bgn peers.
Works.
Seems like when BSSID is same the tab prefers the not-802.11a peer.
Thanks!
Steve.
