I have the trial version of Pocket DVD Wizard 4.7.1 and it wont let me do anything without a crack or serial and it has some "Hardware Fingerprint" key (to generate serial), anyone know how to get around this or a better option to compress DVD's for PPC?
Thanx for the anticipated help.

All the info you need is there.
Another source for info is http://www.ppcw.net/forum/viewtopic.php?id=628 (I figured it would be quicker to post the link instead of rewriting the answer I gave in that Forum) Hope this combined with www.pocketmovies.com helps

SORRY I meant .net not .com
DivX is the best.
what about windows media encoder???
From the little I've tried,
it seems that Microsoft Encoder, which is free, provide
a pretty damn good encoding to a PPC WM9 player format.
You can use AVI and DIVX rips to encode.
make sure you use 320x240 and resize/crop to this, 15fps
this will play in ANY WM2003 device ...
Again, as far as I can tell, for size and compatability, MS is
the best (and I hate MS!)
Thanks to everyone for your help and thorts.
I tried the first gide and it worked must i must have sliped up somewhere as i made the film Top Gun from a DVD but usinf the setting shown in the guide it nded up being 315MB, i did then use windows media encoder 9 to convert this to a .WMV (i think) that was small enough to fit on a 256 card and played in media player, rather than pocket TV,
dose anyone know if there i a click and go software to do this, As in put the dvd in the PC and push a majic button and the next day you have a film made that will fit on a 256 card
Thanks again for your thorts and info
John
Well I don't know of one but if you find it PLEASE let us know
matrix in WMP - 100Mb
I just downloaded and played matrix (the first, 2:10 time).
My setting:
source: divx mpeg file
downsize to 320x168 (clipped 15% of the sides)
15fps
16khz mono sound
85k video
total 100kb/sec estimate
final video is 100Mb and plays pretty good.
e.g. the Jump scene is very watchable.
My suggestion to anyone with a DVD to convert:
dont convert
download the movie in divx etc format from emule
then use MS encoder as above
Hi i would agree with that the converting from a dvd to ppc izs greif, but from a divx or mpeg its nice and easy, So in that case dose anyone know of a easy to use software to convert from DVD to Divx, (that would be handy for the xbox) then i could further encode the divx using media encoder 9 to run on the XDA
Thanks
John

Hi,
You can try Pocket TV Classic:

This one is really great!!
You can also use Pocket MVP (for DivX)

If you're interested in converting DVDs that you own  to a format for viewing on your PPC, there's DVD to Pocket PC.
Previously the product was marked as not for sale in the US due to DMCA concerns, but the latest version has no DVD cracking component (I think it uses other player software installed on your PC to unlock the disk and goes from there) and can be legally purchased in the US.
Quality is so-so since there's a sequence of conversion steps to get to the final product, but you can get 8 hours of movies onto a 512 MB SD card...
I'm trying to use pocket DVD, and i though it woudl be point and click!
I put my DVD in, click open, find the title i want, then press action, then all i ever get is Decoder not initiated, Opend an IFO file first.
can anyone enlighten me as to what is going on?
not sure about pocket DVD, but i just got the templates for TMPGEN (Freeware) and it converts VCD's down to files small enough to play on pocket PC. i bought MovieJack and convert DVD down to MPG, then run through TMPGEN with the template and there is no loss of pic quality.
so DVD (around 4gig) down to MPG (around 1gig) then down to PPC (128 or 256MB ) 4 gig down to 256 or 128 MB depending on your settings !!!!!!
hope this helps
cheers
I use dvd to pocket pc, it is simple and effective.
Ok, I give up...
What is the best software to rip (part of) a DVD so I can view it on my phone?
I have tried CloneDVD Mobile, but it just left me with a stuttery video file that won't play back smoothly. (Doesn't seem to have a generic "Windows Mobile" or "Windows Media Player 10 Mobile" setting...it's all iPod, iPod, iPod these days).
Smartmovie
I use Smart Movie this works very welll on the TYTN
Spliff1
Try This
Look at the program DVDFab Platinum, one pass and you have an avi file playable on your 8525. Check the website: http://www.dvdfab.com
Check out this link for Hermes DVD encoding
This was made by MrVanx, an old timer o this forum
I tried the software he mentions and it works amazing
Great resolution, no frame drops.

Thanks for everyone who replied...
I'm looking at DVDFab initially...but (colour me stupid) I can't see any preset which seems to suit PPC. Selecting PDA gives me a format for Palm. Under Cell Phones there is a setting for Windows SmartPhone, but the screen seems too small.
Should I use one of the Generic settings?
for DVDFab platinum
use the palm settings then change the following:
-size to 320x240
-audio to 128 kb
-video to 256 kb
-volume to 125%
-Subpicture/subtitles (on or off) up to you
-these are my personal setttings that yield a 2hr vid of about 350-400 MB
lower the video get a smaller video, but obvioulsy losing picture quality.
oh yeah save as default so you dont have to reset everytime

Do you have any extra codecs installed on your device? With these settings trying to play the file with WMP10 gives a "Cannot play the file" dialogue box on mine.
DVDFab (Trial) seems pretty annoying too. It doesn't show up in the Vista Alt-Tab list. It also won't recognise my Daemon virtual drive. A whole host of other minor interface issues under Vista too.
Pocket DVD studio is the best in my opinion.
You have lots of setting for audio (up to cd quality) and video resolution. Puts the files into wmv, and you put the slider at the beginning and end of what you want recorded (in case you don't want an entire dvd, or if you want to cut out all the credits at the end of a movie).

sorry i forgot to mention WMP is crap. im running XP still so dunno about vista
use TCPMP
the core pocket media player. you should be able to find free versions available out there. the newest one is a pay versiaon called core one player,
I have pocket rar on my device. Do I copy my dvd to pc then copy that to my handheld ?. What is the easiest guide. I have a 2gb memory card. Zip wouldn't let me. Said file too big. Thanks.
be alot easier if you had the avi file or mp4 of the dvd.
You need a DVD ripper
Hello,
I dont think you'll have any luck playing DVD files directly on the device, if you can even get them there. The first thing is: You'll need TCPMP player, if you want to maintain your sanity (or you can go crazy trying to get WMP to do anything worthwhile...lol) Get it from this thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=565653&highlight=tcpmp
As far as getting movies onto the device, You have 2 choices:
#1 Get the films you want from Torrents, in AVI format. The ones that are sized to fit onto 1 CD (about 750MB) will work very nicely without having to do anything to them!
#2 Get a DVD ripper. You can probably find one for free, but I personally use a paid version from Wondershare. It won't work on every one, but for most it does.

Hope this helps you enjoy that big, fat screen!
Cheers!
Hi
I use DVD Catalyst to convert from DVD no need to rip first
http://www.tools4movies.com/
There is a free version or a paid version if you want more control
err... search?
this topic (and many variations) has been answered many many many times before,
there is no 'best way' you ask that here and all you'll get is other peoples recommendations which will vary wildly. leaving you possibly more confussed then when you asked!
the process remains the same (legit DVD > a means to rip the DVD to a compatible format > testing the playback for results)
you may well notice an audio delay, in which case you need a dvd ripping/converter that can allow you to set the encoding to account for this.

Thanks for the links. You are right, everybody has their own preference lol.
I have divx converter on my p c. Never used it before. So I put in my legit dvd. rip it. compress it to mp4. Then cut and paste it to my memory card And voila ?.
I downloaded pocket divx. You can download films straight to device. Is there a catch when registering ?.
I use a program called handbrake...its free google it....my videos are as clear as Transformers....i select video conversion to mpeg4 and select 100% quality...thats all u need....trust me.
