Need help - no connections in Connectivity bubble - 8525, TyTN, MDA Vario II, JasJam General

I have a strange problem with my O2 Trion: in the Connectvity bubble that pops up when when I tap on the little GPRS icon in the title bar, I get no connections listed and also no "connect" button - just a text liek "Go to network settings and add a new connection to access Internet" (rough translation from the German text).
The funny thing is that I do have network connections defined in the settings. After a hard-reset, I allowed the O2 programs in the Extended ROM to install themselves, so I have the original O2 connection settings. And PIE also connects without a problem.
So, would anybody know what makes a connection become listed in that bubble, and how to get the "connect" button back?
Thanks in advance!
Daniel
PS: I compared some values in the registry of my Trion with those of my old Magician. I found that Microsoft moved the ConnMgr from HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft to HKLM\Comm and added a few keys, but I could not find a difference explaining the symptoms of my problem. Maybe someone of you would be so nice and export the ConnMgr part from their registry and send it to me, so that I can compare them? I do not think they contain any sensitive information (passwords etc), but it never hurts to look before you send anything.

Nice work-around!
Okay, it seems this is not just my device which has that problem, but rather a design decision by Microsoft.
However, I think I found a very nice work-around for the problem. I just added a short description to the Wiki, on the page http://wiki.xda-developers.com/index.php?pagename=Hermes_Utils under the heading "Easily connect/disconnect GPRS".
Cheers

looks like you have already found a wrokaround for this but try this if you still want to see the connect/disconnect button and the time of connection in bubble. It also allows you to toggle between gprs always on and turn off gprs when the device is not used for the amount of time of your choice. very handy.

Thanks for the hint, but I had installed this little program already. It does a lot of nice things, but didn't help with the missing connect button.
In the meantime I heard from a few O2 Trion owners that they actually do have a "connect" button, so it's not a problem with WM5 per se. Although I have a work-around, I would still like to understand what really goes on there.
Cheers

hmmm... so you are right. i just confirmed it myself that it only enables the disconnect button but not the connect button when it's disconnected. i have gprs always on and did not realize it until now. it might be that i only saw the connect button when i was running an older version rom on my universal that did not come with gprs always on as the default. sorry for the confusion...

Yes, it's a (in my opinion, rather questionable - in pre-WM5 OS'es, the ability to start (/stop) connections manually and, what is more, the ability of choosing between the Internet and Work right in the bubble was a great asset) design decision. It's only the "Disconnect" button that's hackable.

Settings for phone/3g in corp mode?

I got my XDA Exec last week and was impressed apart from the speed of the unit when switching screen modes. I thought that the O2 active would be to blame, so found out how to stop it running, and voila my Exec was instantly faster.
After further reading I found that a hard reset and selecting corp (or corporate) mode would install the bare minimum, so I decided to try this to see if it was better. Unfortunately, the phone and gprs/3g now do not work, as the settings are not installed. Does anybody know how to set these up? The Exec does appear to be much faster so I would quite like to get it running in corp mode.
Thanks
Allan
AFAIK, Basic mode is identical to Corp mode, except that it does pre-configure the connection settings. The O2 Active interface doesn't appear in Basic mode.
However, I think Basic mode does include an O2 icon in the Start bar and a battery monitor thingy there too. It's relatively easy to stop them appearing by deleting the relevant links from the \Windows\Startup folder though, and then you have a clean Exec like God intended
The one thing did like about corp mode was that it didnt say "running in basic mode" when resetting, and it had a battery monitor on the today screen. But I guess I can live without those...

The Basic mode also uses the O2 Phone Dialer skin, which is removed in the Corp install.

Oh. Just tried selecting Corp and did a soft reset and the phone looks exactly the same to me. Ah well. It's not exactly an ugly skin so I don't care if it is the O2 one.
What does the non-O2 skin look like?

Similar, but less "flashy", but more in-keeping with the default WM5.0 theme.
Doh! Thanks Dave, didnt notice that was a link before!
Is there anything else I would need to setup in corp mode that would otherwise be setup in basic mode? I cant think of anything off-hand.
Also, if you know anything about this it may be useful. I connect to 3g but the connection often hangs. In IE I see either "connecting..." or "locating..." in the status bar and nothing else. The only way to fix this once it gets to this state is to reset the unit. Merely restarting the connection doesnt seem to work. I get similar probs in any prog that uses the 3g connection, they just stop working. (I am in good reception areas too).
Do you think this is a setup issue, a simcard or phone issue? I am inclined to think it might be a simcard issue.
Thanks

I've just done this myself yesterday, and all the services I've tried appear to be working - I can send and recieve calls, text and use the web. The only thing I've not tried yet is MMS. The only thing missing from the Corp mode that I would like is a decent battery bar, but I'd imagine that I'll be able to find a little utility that will do that.

To tell you the truth, I don't know. This is the first time I've used a 3G phone myself (been a user of all previous XDA's, none of which were 3G) so I had to get my SIM switched over. All I did notice is that one my account was switched to the new SIM connectivity seemed to be very bad in the 3G areas - I phone O2 about it and they said they had some issues with their network then. That was last week, but now everything seems to be fine.
To you restore your battery meter in corporate mode you need to make sure that batterNFO.exe is here
\Windows\Mobile Solutions\O2ActiveUI\Modules\BatteryNFO\batteryNFO.exe
and makesure that batteryNFO.lnk is here
\windows\startup\batteryNFO.lnk
if anyone needs a copy of the file let me know and I will post a link
If you install the gprs monitor from the o2 app disc, it has a nice little battery info built in to the gprs monitor icon.

Im sorry I got it wrong, I thought I had got it because there was an on screen battery indicator in corporate mode, but I have come to realise that it might have been their already (the one next to the wireless manager)

Phone Button Problem.

Hello everybody, I am facing a strange problem. Some of my phone buttons have stopped working as they used to work before. The complete buttons on the front panel at times they work and at times they don't. The below mentioned buttons only are not working:
1. The Internet Explorer button.(Above on the right)
2. The Message button.(Above on the left)
3. The Call buttons. (The call picking and disconnecting button, below left and right) And the 4 keys along it.
And one more strange problem is the phone goes to the internet explorer by its own, at times when i open the phone it is on the internet explorer, though before going to the sleeping mode after getting locked it is on the normal screen but when i switch it on and put the password, i find it on the internet explorer screen. Pls help to resolve these problems, I'll highly appreciate you all.
The buttons would be controlled in the settings section.
But I have to agree about the IE coming up. I think its related to getting the phone out of the case on your belt and it presses itself - as it were. I've tried setting that button to nothing to see if that makes any difference.

Thnks for the msg. Can you advise where in the settings section the changes have to be done.
Regarding IE, i believe it is not due to removing and inserting in the cover. Even when it is removed from the cover, and at times if i press the key which is right below the contact(to open contact details), It opens IE and with the call button which is the green one also.
Pls help me, I never knew atleast with this device after spending a huge amount still i will come across such problem. I am really frustrated with the device.
Anybody pls help!!!!!
Regards Pankaj

This may be quite wrong but I'm just wondering if you guys have programmes running in the background. You may know that just tapping on the X top right does not close programmes down fully. You need something like Magicbutton or HTC X Button installed to quickly and fully close running programmes. If you don't have such an application installed then some of these hard keys may be responding to the background programmes. It would not surprise me in this case that Internet Explorer pops up because it's never been fully closed.
Just a thought.
And if you knew all this already I apologise, but it might be useful to someone who didn't know.

Not saying this is the cause of your problem but could be.
Magic Button shows running programmes and lets you fully close them:
http://www.pocketgear.com/software_detail.asp?id=7438
It will ask for you to register and give e-mail address but you do not need to, you can still download without doing all that.
There are other programmes like HTC X Button but this one works fine.

i have the same problem! maybe something funny is going on with JASJAMs... anyway, i tried pressing the IE button after resetting the device (soft reset) and it STILL says it cant find the location. it must be SOMEWHERE in the registry!

Can we assume that IE works ok when you start it from the Start Menu, and that it is only when you try to start it from the hardware key it does not work?

yes thats exactly right. runs perfectly! i'm wondering if maybe the entry in the registry has gone missing...?

Given the programme is working fine, this I think will be a simple matter of remapping the key to the shortcut/programme. Unfortunately it's late here, hopefully someone else can give you the detail. If not I'll check this thread tomorrow.

Go to Start>settings>Buttons>
Select button 2 and choose Internet Explorer from the drop down list below.
(If IE is already chosen then I would choose something else for button 2 (anything) tick to say ok. Try the button it should open whatever programme you selected. Now go back to the buttons menu and choose Internet Explorer for button 2 again.)
Hopefully this will work if not report back.

hi guys i have same problem my panels buttons are not woking just center buttons are wokring, its not work 2 week , then suddenly one day it work but next day again offf.... does any 1 have same problem?

Select All... possible?

I'm certain i've seen this query before but I cannot seem to find it!
I have a in-car navigation system and because of the phone not being wholly supported, i need to bluetooth the contacts over onto the system.
the issue is i cannot find the "select all" option in contacts, nor can i select all the contacts manually.
I have around 300 contacts on the phone and there is no way i can sit there clicking, beaming, selecting bluetooth reciever and sending because that in itself can take up to a minute per contact
Thanks
One cab to try is FDC PPCContacts. it provides some advanced functionality.
Try Ctrl+A with the Softkeayboard. I don't know a solution with the hardware keyboard. I'm really missing the Ctrl key on it.

Thanks for that... I dont suppose you could write up a beta thing for me to use ? I know its a bit cheeky but its a bit pointless me having a $3000 incar system with built in bluetooth phone, and a $600 phone but yet be restricted because of this one small issie with WM5.
I beamed over 3 today and it took almost 5 minutes for them.
The pattern is:-
Set system to recieve
select>beam>wait to pick up system>and select
once beamed, the system says do you want to beam more.... you have to say yes
then you do the process again.
If I know a rough time-scale then I know whether to borrow a nokia and sync the contacts to that (via outlook) and then beam at once.
Thanks for your help again

Network Time App

Hi, tried searching this forum but haven't found what I am looking for. Basically I am searching for an application that enables automatic network time update. Could someone point me in the right direction. I have an AT&T/Cingular 8525 that has been flashed to the Black Satin ROM. Thanks in advance!
install pimp my black .02 and turn on time zone tab in the phone settings. Click "bling" and wait for the reboot. Go into phone settings and time zone tab and check "update time automaticly"
Thanks for the quick reply. But is there just a cab file I could just install rather than re-flashing?
i think hes talking about from a specific time server
there is a program called syncrotime i think. it used to be on the faria roms. i have no idea where to get it though. google it.
edit: found it....
http://handheld.softpedia.com/get/Business/Clock/SynchroTime-9077.shtml
Thanks, all, for your quick and insightful responses. I am coming from the Treo 750 to the AT&T/Cingular 8525. Is there a more elegant solution? Basically, on the Treo 750, once you're in the "Clock" settings under the Settings menu, there was a box to check that allowed the Treo to stay in sync with the AT&T network time setting. Looking for something similar and simple for the 8525.

ohhhhhhhhhhh.. sync with at&t's time server...
theres a reg tweak for that
Enabling network time synchronization
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\OEM\PhoneSetting
change HiddenTimeSync Page to 0
theres another one though. ill have to find it.
THANKS!!!! Love you!
I always seem to press my cheek up against the phone and weird things happen to the clock/time when I don't use my bluetooth headset. This definitely saves me from thinking I am either earlier or later than I am when the time abruptly changes from my cheek!

Problem with WiFi

If I press wlan button in Comm Manager than WiFi should be ON but it is not. I did use some different roms but still nothing. Somebody know what to do ?
settings-connections-wireless lan - there is only message:
Wireless LAN is OFF.Turn on Wireless LAN.
It does not work. Please help me.
Go back to wm5. If your lucky it might come back. The more I dig through here the more I see people with wifi problems after flashing. You might be out of luck
HOWEVER
I noticed under WM6 the bubble that pops up when you click on the wifi tower ALWAYS says 'turn on wifi'
Good luck!
Same problem with my WI-FI, Not working please help!!!!
Hi All. I am facing the same problem with my WI-FI as Vomithaus is having. Whenever I try to to connect to WIFI from Commmanager, it tries to and then to show disconnected. When i go to settings> Wireless LAN, it asks me to "Configure Network Adaptors", and lists all the adaptors and going into them asks about the ip settings and stuff like that. By the Way I Bricked my phone once and then i flashed with T-Mobile Ship WM6.0 RUU for the WING. And I strongly suspect that the registry setting are not right or the Radio ROM is F***ed up. Can any knowledgeable person help me please? I would greatly appreciated any help.
Same problem with my WI-FI, Not working please help!!!!
This is the addeneum to the last post. The last remaining screenshot for the above post. The last screen shot of the "Wi-Fi Status" in the "Settings > Connection", gives me an option to "Turn on Wi-Fi" but toggeling it results in nothing. Thank You everybody for your time and consideration.
It might help us to figure out how this happened too. I bought the EXEC off of ebay and it was like this from the get go. The previous owner flashed it to wm6 about 1 month ago, but said it was working fine... all he did was hard reset to get rid of the personal information. I want to believe him, but there are a few people on here complaining of flashing the exec and losing wifi. (even the official rom from O2).
Flashing COULD have damaged the transmitter, but it seems more likely that a setting is wrong somewhere (especially since there is a slider bar for WIFI battery vs performance).
This is good news (somewhat), but the bad news is that if there is one, no one knows about it. I have messed around in the registry (there were some promising entries related to POWER), but nothing that even showed a response. I found the entry that connects to the slider bar, but PERFORMANCE = zero, so there is nowhere to go there but WORSE.
This really sucks, is all I can say. I blew $500 on something that is useless (well... not useless, but no WIFI? WHY COULD IT HAVE NOT BEEN BLUETOOTH!)
Another step I have taken is contacting PPC Tech's via email and asking them if they have any idea how to repair it, and how much $$$
I'll keep you informed.
Can you tell me if yours EVER worked, and if so, when it stopped?
I just looked closer at your screenshots.... Do you have a WIFI card? (it say's 'adapter').
No, I dont have a WIFI card but this is way how windows handles all is peripherals (services), as an add-on card. just like you laptop.
Guys, There is a registry fix for this problem.
Please take look here :

I am afraid Ron that this is not a case as suggested in Beowulf6's solution. If it is the solution I dont know how to exactly implement it. But I am posting here the exact registry key screenshot for you guys to take a look also. I can't see and TNETWLN1 or TNET12345 key here in my device. I still think it has to something with the registry. Can any one here with a T-Mobile WING verify and post their screen shot? or maybe send me a registry backup to compare with? It would be really grateful it some does that. Thanks everybody for a few seconds to read this.
In my herald i can't see TNETWLN1 or TNETWLN12345 too.
I did use Mobile Registry Editor for that , what you guys are useing?
(sorry for my English, if you dont understand me just tell me please)
Look at the screenshots, there a Reg Folder with the name WLAN, open it, and then open the key with all the numbers and letters. At the end of that line is a code. TNETWLAN1 is what it should be for the Herald.

Hi Please look at my screen shot again clearly. I did post what is inside the WLAN folder. There are only two keys :
1) (Default) \Windows\ctlpnl.exe
2) CmdLine cplmain17
I still can't figure where is the key with numbers and letters. Sorry If I am a bit dumb or wrong. Thanks.
it is possible if you use the default Commanager that you dont have this registry key.
I dont know if it helps if you create it on your own.
but for me where i installed a different commanager, the Key was there and i edited it for the wlan button.
My Tmo Wing has "TIACXWLN1" in that registry key.
Do those changes apply to the herald and the Wing interchangeably?
