Developer Request - Smartphone Web Search - Windows Mobile Development and Hacking General

In the same way that the Treo 700w has a web search box on the today screen, I can't find a similar utility for WM5 smartphones (not PocketPC).
I have a Blackjack on order and will miss having this utility:-

Anyone know of a smartphone alternative or willing to put together a quick google search utility?

I think Windows Mobile 5 is backwards-compatible with PPC software. However, I'll look into writing a WM5-specific search tool. Thanks for the idea

Can anyone make Picsel Viewer on Treo 700w work on non-Treo?

ftp://xda:[email protected]/General/picselifv_treo700w.CAB
The CAB file for Picsel PDF Viewer is available on the above link, but when I run it on my XV6700, it says that it's an unsupported device and exits. It opens in full QVGA, so it's not just designed for the square screen, so I figure it's looking for a registry entry or hardware ID to determine if it's being run on a Treo 700w.
Can anyone make it run properly on a non-Treo 700w device?
Can anyone provide a virgin registry dump of a Treo 700w?
If you've ever seen the Picsel software in action, you'll know it to be a good piece of software. Why they don't sell it normally on Handango or PocketGear is beyond me.
Thanks in advance.
Can anyone look into this please?!? :?
Hey,
the app looks very neat. i did try disassembling it and looking for the error string however the string is in resources and not in data section or it would've been easier.
i'll look further if I get time tomorrow.
one question, does this app also load html pages or work as a full web browser?
I believe the Samsung i730 has something called the Picsel Browser. I don't know if it's a different name, but I think it can load HTML pages as well as PDF.
Can anyone grab that off the i730 ROM, or is it on an accompanying CD?
Picsel Viewer for non Treo Windows Mobile Devices...
I am very interested to know if anyone managed to get Picsel Viewer - which btw is an incredible application - running on a Windows Mobile device other then the Treo and the few others that it came preinstalled on
Dying to get this as well. Picsel beats all other PDF readers hands down. Above link also no longer works.
FWIW: I'd work on the new version that was recently released with the 700W MSFP patch as this fixes the memory allocation error that plagued the original version. This may be available as a separate download from Palm, but I'm not sure of this.

Complete absence of printer drivers for MS Win2003SE SmartpH

Stockholm, August 21 2006.
Dear Forum:
We have a C# application running on older Smartphone models
(MS Windows 2003SE for Smartphone) where both WM5.0 and PDAs
are "overkill".
The Smartphone gets input data from a barcode scanner via
bluetooth (SPP serial profile), forwards the data via GPRS to
a webserver which validates & replies with a beep + ascii-text.
Now, at the end of a transaction, we need to send ascii-text
not to the Smartphone display but rather to a portable printer
at the remote location - preferably also pushed out from the
Smartphone via bluetooth to the mobile printer.
The REAL snag is that 99% of the market only use PDAs so the
hardware manufacturers themselves have no drivers which can
be used on Win 2003SE Smartphone OS (only PPC/WinCE or WM5.0)
and consequently we need to find a workaround to solve this.
[A] Using FieldSoftware's SmartphonePrint which does allow
for bluetooth printing to some models, but it only can print
PIM elements unfortunately.
In that case, we thought of using the Smartphone PIM task
+ Notes attached to a Task, as the text to print, but this
mean we must create a Task+Notes on-the-fly programmatically
deleting any previous ones in the process, AND launch the
3rd-party SmartphonePrint sequence without user interaction!!
Does anyone now how this could be done simply?
Else, has anyone seen any other Smartphone 2003 print
utility from "way back when" ??
[C] Better yet, would anyone knows of any usable drivers?!?
so we indeed could integrate the printing to our C# application
(deployed from MS Visual Studio 2005 Professional), and bypass
the need for a 3rd-party software, which is harder to control
AND which would lead to resorting to end-user action...
Grateful for any suggestions, albeit in priority C > B > A !
Brgds,
/Per Hagman
==============================================================
PS-1:
There are two-three well-known 3rd-party suppliers of standard
software for printing from an older Smartphone such as Qtek8080
or imate SP3 - aka SPV/Xphone/SDA/SMT5600 etc, namely:
FieldSoftware -- www.fieldsoftware.com/smartphoneprintfull.htm
JetCet -- www.westtek.com/smartphone/jetcet (only IrDA!)
PrintBoy -- www.bachmannsoftware.com/pbce.htm (only MS Mobile 5.0?)
Although articles, forums etc. indicate that PrintBoy works on
both PDA and Smartphones, its CAB-file doesn't install on our
MS Win 2003SE Smartphone...
Repligo 2.0 for Smartphones looks like another method, but we
will have to doublecheck if the HP printing is possible for
the portable printers that are available... ???
www.cerience.com/products/smp/index.htm
www.cerience.com/docs/smp/docs/index.htm#Printing
There are a number of small portable mobile printers available
on the market, many conveniently eqipped with a bluetooth
interface -- these printers are ok for field-service printing
For a visual near-complete listing, see again:
www.fieldsoftware.com/PrintersSupported.htm
PS-2:
There is also ActivePrint for PDA printing while docked, and
it might work for Smartphones. However, it doen't really apply
for printing at remote locations (or in a delivery truck) using
small mobile printers,,,
www.activeprint.pocketwatchsoftware.com/news/2006.04.04.htm
Finally at www.print4mobile.com/Engine.htm we found a system
for printing more sophisticated database-driven report prints
which is a clear overkill for us at this stage, and still we
cannot see how they would handle the lacking mobile printer drivers...
Note:
HP has discontinued its Win Smartphone 2003SE package in late 2005:

windows sdk questions

I'm thinking about developing a few apps for my Tilt so I can start to learn to program for a PPC.I read the wiki a bit and found this page
http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb158662.aspx
It talks about the Microsoft mobile SDK. and that has code samples in it.
Do you have to pay for those samples? There's a few in there that I'd like to mess with like battery status. I couldnt find out where to DL or if you have to pay for them.
Do these samples work with the free eMbedded Visual C 4 listed on the wiki?
Will these apps work with WM6?
Is there a better/easier tool to use that most people do use that is better for developing apps on the Tilt and WM6
Thanks!
you have to download and install windows mobile 6 sdk(free). It will have those samples in it. I don't think it will work with Visual C 4, but you can try with latest visual studio express (supposed to be free)
oh wow cool. thanks!
so reading the MS page, i need Microsoft Visual Studio 2005 or better. is that correct? The news you gave is great since the first few apps that I write are real close to the samples listed anyway. Then i can get creative from there
http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-gb/netframework/bb495180.aspx
First off, you can unpack the MSI installation files without actually installing them if all you are after are some code samples. (This will save you paying for VS 2005 which I think is way too expensive for a private developer looking to make some apps for him self and not publish commercial software).
Second, if you search the net for sites like www.pocketpcdn.com you will find plenty of code samples some of which will be way better than what the SDK has to offer.
Finally, note that you can develop apps for WM 5 and 6 with eVC 4 and WM 2003 SDK with no problem.

Lock down the user interface (Windows Mobile 6 Professional)

Hey Guyz,
Long time no see..! I have been assigned to develope a barcode scanning application using .NET Compact Framework 2.0 (I can use 3.5 if necessary).
Right then to the point, I have already developed and finished the barcode application and there came a new demand from the business team who uses the application.
Basically the devices we use are HP iPaq (Windows Mobile 6 Professional) in combination with Grabba barcode scanner. They have requested that the application I wrote starts automatically and covers the entire screen. Now as for covering the entire screen is working fine but I need to do something about starting the application when the device starts up or when a device is put to sleep by clicking the power button and then bring back, the application should start up or show up automatically.
Now I have been researching and exploring a lot of third party applications and one application so far that comes the closest to my needs is the SPB Mobile Shell. It does pretty much what I want apart from locking down all buttons.
Now what I would like to know is, is it even possible to lock down all buttons at all? If not then how would I atleast go about developing an app which behaves like a SPB Mobile Shell? I know that the SPB Mobile Shell is very complicated application but all I want if the behaviour of SPB Mobile Shell's Today screen.
If I need to start by creating my own custom shell then where would I start from?
Regards
I'm not a developer, but hopefully this will help. You would be better off looking at kiosk software such as spb kiosk, whick locks down the whole device apart from programs you specify, ie. your developed app, and any other apps that are used.
This is a virus, not an application.
You use your pocket pc only for barcode reading. Why not use just a reader which costs 10 times less??
And no, SPB is not a complicated application.

Please don't judge me by my post count or the type of question. This is a genuine question.
Tell me what sort of device you think I can use which costs 10 times less.
I need a device with Wi-Fi so users can take it with them while attached to the barcode scanner. Then using the Wi-Fi the application connects and talks a web service running on the intranet server so users from all around the country can manage state of things that are needed to be tracked of their movement.
This was a specific request from the CIO that users are not needed to use any other applications and thus complicate things for themselves. All they want is just to use the application without any special training.
Hope this clears things a little.

Thanks mate
I will pass this down to the chief architect so we can decide if the SPB Kiosk can do of what we need.
Cheers again.
FYI, we are going to try the PocketKiosk Builder
http://www.askarya.com/pocketpc/pocketkiosk/pk.asp
Will see how that goes.
And what about puting a link to your app in the windows\statup folder?

Another idea
Old thread, but...
Why not go for a unit with a built in barcode reader and Wifi/GPRS like the Motorola MC55 / MC75A?
Then you can use the Motorola AppCentre software which allows you to restrict which programs can be launched and presents a really simple interface for the user. I'm pretty sure you can download this software free with the serial number of one of their units.
Users will have no need to hunt for Wifi connectivity as the units have built in connectivity to the Internet. All you need is a low data allowance SIM with voice calls blocked.
The units are more expensive than the HP iPAQ, but they do more as well.
Hopefully someone might find this information useful.
HD.

[REQ] Better WM Search App?

Has anyone ever developed a better search program?
The one that ships with WM is crap in my opinion, takes forever, outdated (whats that nonsense about big files over 64k???) and is unreliable.
I used to have a Palm Treo and the Search function was both lightening fast and accurate, able to search the entire memory for anything. Thats what we need for Windows Mobile.
Anyone?
