Tomorrow update with new pix

Looks great!!! Would love to see the final pics! Great job!

Is that an electronic butt plug in your second photo?! Pimp'd indeed!
Looking forward to the finished result...
V

nnnnnniiiiiiiiiiiccccccccceeeeeeee...
UPDATE: Hmm.. I took a second look on your pictures, I wonder how do you tend to paint over the buttons? Or, probably you can live with the top two button being icon-less, but it wouldn't be that great if the bottom green/red phone buttons are all covered in paints. Gives a close shots on how you handle the buttons

That's really cool, man! I haven't seen anyone do anything like that to a Vario yet. Right on.

update
I am still not happy with the result. I couldnt wait for the paint to fully dry... So I allready put it together, and I think I damaged the paintjob now with my fingerprints....
but... Its allready better then before
Im going to redo it soon

The Pimpin' looks good but I am wondering what is on the pad below the phone..... I have been twisting my laptop around trying to get the best angle to see things, but to no avail..... your handwriting is not the best!!

haha its Dutch.... AND My handwriting is not so good

Think you need to rub the whole phone down with wet and dry sandpaper, very very fine paper you can get from car repair shops. once that is done and its silky smooth, then apply the paint in thin layers, leave 20 minutes between each layer and do 3 or 4
Then leave for 24 hours and then apply a coat of clear laquer, again 3 to 4 coats with gaps of 20mins, that should leave it finished to the same standard as a car :>

Hmm.. you have seems seriously spoilt your paint job. I did a search, and it seems that sanding your paint with rough and then ultra fine paper may do the job. Take a look at this
http://www.bit-tech.net/news/2006/09/27/Scratched_up_DS_Lite_Mod/
Or if you want, you can do a ultra mirror glossy one. There is a tutorial here, seems very difficult, especially Wizard's back un-even surface.
http://www.mnpctech.com/case-mod-paint-computer-pc-case-mod-how-to.html
http://www.xtremesystems.org/forums/showthread.php?t=89422
I wonder how much paint job it the cover can sustain. You don't want it to look like this
http://www.flickr.com/photos/[email protected]/sets/72157594221854345/

i see you have modified the flash as i have posted few months ago haven't you? or yours is like this from the factory?

should have done a glossy black or glossy white instead. that would be sweeet!!! but good work thou even if its appear still rough.. admire your braveness..

On IMG_14884 it shows a very nice app where it shows the processor speed and I belive also shows temperature? well I want it :-D I got to have it :-D now... also my paint is coming off but I think I will take it appart and take it to a car coach work to get it respray it :-D... but I think i'll do it silver colour original because of the buttons...
Also it would look better if you would find and eletrick blue wall paper and I would also suggest you to get the windows live messanger installed there too :-D have you tried it? I can't live without it now ;-)
P.S.
Hum! Holand is my favorite country best people best culture

awesome im not the only one
i just recently painted my 8125. i did it because it was scratched and getting worse no matter how well i took care of it. for some reason the paint chips off constantly. my process was the following
i did not take my phone apart.
1.taped off the screen
2. taped off everything from the bottom of the top lid down.
3. sanded down the phone to a primer look on the top and a bronze look on the side. (i have come to realize if you dont sand you phone like i did not do the first time you will have yourself a flaking monster)
4. SAND THE PHONE IT WILL LOOK HORRIBLE BUT IT WONT FLAKE
5.painted using Krylon Fusion White Satin.
6.Dry for 24hrs
7.Clear coat
8. Dry for another 24 HRs
9 repeat the steps for the back lid and camera lid.
notes
i had to sand down the back lid which has that rubber thing that has been falling off my phone and it finally got lost.
using a exacto knife i could have left the buttons but i was too lazy to do it.if you decide not to take the phone apart like i did then dont go paint happy because you will see the thickness build up. remember one coat of paint and one or 2 light coats of clear seal will make it look authentic.
if you decide to paint your phone black, like i did the first time, for what ever reason its harder to see the screen in light places. but it looked way brighter in the night.
tips what would be cool is if i had plastic model car decals of some cool designs to apply after the white paint and then seal with the clear coat. i couldnt because there isnt a hobby store in town.
i wouldnt had done it had i not seen the casino royale movie where that chick has that white phone.
i will post pics as soon as my back lids are done drying
PATIENCE YOU NEED PATIENCE!!!!!!!
GOOD LUCK!!

I've been meaning to paint my k-jam for a while now but have never got around to it. I'm still unsure on exactly what type of paint to use. I don't want to use just normal spray paint, i want something that will make it look like i bought the device like that.
I was also thinking of trying out Alsa Corp's thermal color changing paint. http://alsacorp.com/products/eclipse/showcase/6-l.jpg http://alsacorp.com/products/eclipse/video/eclipse_sink.wmv
I think i'm gonna have to make a trip to a hobby shop and see if they can help me out to find the right type of paint.

Any way to repaint X1?

Hey! Anyone found out how to repaint X1? I mainly mean battery cover. From black X1 the paint is scratching off and it looks ugly. Any good paint that will mask it? Any solution? I don't want to have black and silver-scratchy coloured X1 and I think nobody wants. Some solutions?
well i think since it is steel u can take it to a paint shop for cars he will max a mix n paint it for u im thinking of doing so 2..but i dnt get it why is it only the back cover not the front also but thank God only the back..btw i take good care of this phone i dnt have anyidea why....
i have 2 "dots" on front panel also.. they're about 1/3 mm wide.
Same problem with black battery cover.
I thought of getting a can of metal black paint for car / bike etc.
New cover on EBay goes for about 15 UK pounds!
This is the worst thing about the X1 one really. I hate how the back cover looses all of it's paint so easily! Even the Xperia logo on the back is starting to come of and that really sucks so badly. And I am so glad that the front is not that bad, that would be a disaster!
But good luck re-painting and come back with the result if you do re-paint it!
I was fed up with the scratches on my X1 battery cover, so I used a buffing tool to remove the paint completely.. Nice brushed steel effect now! I'll probably spray it black at some point, but from what I can tell, the paint should take pretty easily if you key the surface well enough.
I did the same thing with my old iPod when the back of that got scratched. Just used some metallic car paint. Primed it first, then sprayed one coat on, then added 2 layers of clear. The clearcoat is important, because whilst it gives it a glossy finish, it also means the scratches don't show up half as much.
I wrote an Email to SE that my battery cover looks worse even if i have my X1 always in my leather case. One week later there was a new battery cover with me

I did too buyt hey simply said I should go to the supplier of the phone, they could not say if I would pay in or be replaced for free
wouldnt painting the cover make it 10x uglier since it will not be consistant with the rest of the body
why dont you just mask the battery cover black or something?
or buy a new cover!
use any automobile aerosole paint
in our country that method works : )
google it )

HI
I painted mine today. Bought can of black metal spray paint with a satin finish. I placed a cutom cut sticker over the silver 'XPERIA' title and 'Xi'.
Then I REMOVED the battery cover and took it outside for painting (NB remove it from the phone before you paint )
I looks great. I am still debating putting on a clear coat . . .
Cost about $3 and 5 min - excluding time allowed for drying . . .
Could you post any photo of your repainted X1?
I have done this. Here is a picture:
I borrowed my roommate's spray paint that he uses to paint his models with (matte black). I didn't bother taping anything because I didn't care much for the XPERIA text and figured that taping it would make it easier to chip and less resilient.
So far it has been great, looks 100% consistent with the rest of the back except that it isn't quite as "soft-touch."
Please do disregard the teddy bear.
It looks great! Shame it isn't possible to get that "polished metal" effect as on original cover...
Yes, I was debating on whether to get a new battery cover and apply a film protector on it or just spray paint it.
In the interest of money, I chose to paint over it and am very pleased. I was especially happy that the Sony Ericsson engraving remained intact and looks perfect even on close inspection. No one unfamiliar with the normal battery cover of the XPERIA could tell it was painted..

SEX1 Back/battery cover solution

Hi everybody,
I´m still a student here in this uge high school of tecnology, i learned a lot and know for the firts time i think that i can contribute with something form my one, straight form Portugal.
Well as all the SEX1 (black) user´s I encounterd the back/battery cover problem! It´s scratch very easy... on the second day of use only by putting it in my jeans pocket it was already showing bit´s of aluminium... I had a lot os phones till now and with none something like that happend but also... and i never had one with a aluminium back (chique) ... and front cover so the 600€ maybe not all lost in the process...
Well i found on google a mate that polished his one almost to bronze... but i tougt to myself that it had exist a solution more simpler and i found one... simple and great...
Simply wipe the paint of with a normal soft steel woll swab, those that mom´s use to clean the grease from the pan´s, it doesn´t ruin the aluminium, it doesn´t scratch it, and the aluminium stays with that awsome shape... Really nice! Think almost better that the original black. Heard people saying that the will buy new ones form ebay... the problem will remain the same... they will scratch sone or later...
Cheers|

Looks nice man! I have the silver one, and man.. it looks awul..
I'm not understanding..
So you used the pads to basically sand down the aluminum, and then paint it over or something?

The pads take out the paint, without scratching the surface, and leave de foil naked, witout the black ou grey paint... for me it´s better than as in original
So basically, the entire cover is actually made with black aluminum, and that it's not silver with black painted over?
Edit: What I mean is, how is it that you're taking off the paint, but it's still black in those pictures?
Sorry, I'm just a bit confused.

Lol it´s silver as seen in the pic´s...
But it´s a dark silver...
I think the color on my monitor is off, but I see it clearly as a dark dark dark black
Anyway, it looks real good after what you did with it.

Nice one man!! i did the same and ppl were surprised by the results
I was really scared to this, but it really worked! Thanks man!
its not
its not aluminium its titanium. i think this is your answer
looks great! I think I will try it myself. I never thougt it was that easy!! Thanks for the idea
Anyone else tested this? Thought I might try this with my silver cover, but don't know if the result will be as good as this?
Hi, good to know that people from where I live do think of some good things, after all... hehe.
I have a balck one too, bought it on ebay about 9 months ago, and it already came with some scratches on the battery cover.
I thought of buying a new one, but after seeing your post I'll try that instead.
Thanks again.

steel wool works too
I did not have brillo, so used a soft steelwool obtainable from any builders merchant/paint shop/hardware store and it works a charm.
Nice uniform dark metal finish, only a couple of shades lighter than the original (unscratched) black - imagine the surrounding metal of the front cover being a shade or two lighter - same finish, sheen and proffessional look!
Shows finger prints, but not scratches!
thanks very much for this!!
I just painted mine candy apple red (inspired from the Satio). The black-red combo looks really, really great.

Hero paintjob project

****UPDATE*******
Been thinking about making them for people.
front £12.55
back £4.59
Paint £5
labour £5
designs £10
and if you wanted a design I will be using a qualified fine artist. She is painting two cases now so will post them when she is done.
The front case doesn't come with a digitizer so the area around that will look fine.
*****/update*****
I have owned the Hero since it came out on orange in the UK, but I hate the grey colour so I'm making it nicer.
I have 4 backs to the phone so all will be different designs. Also I will be using the black grill cover for call speaker, black volume/menu buttons from the T-mobile G2.
As I think black will suit the blue better.
All paints are car paints from Halfords.
I started on day one with sanding down the phone then applying a primer(base layer)

Day two
I applied the blue colour
Day three
Went really well sanded down and put the primer on the other backs.
Applied the lacquer, so will be able to rebuild phone tommorow.
The yellow back is halford glow in the dark paint. I do not recommend playing with this(yes it glows like mad) it is really thin. It took 6 layers just to get what you see in the photo.
Day four rebuilding the phone.
Phone rebuild only had one little hic-up. when I put the black grill on the in call speaker didn't put it right so was very quite. Corrected now.
phone is working fine no dust under the screen. looks well smooth.
things I would change.
I would take the digitizer out fully not just use low tack tape.
put all casing on match sticks to get a smoother look on the corners.
apart from that I'm well impressed with my first try at painting. ( didn't even do art in school)
Lots of photos including the glow in the dark case.
Any questions post here or tweet me T- iammodo
Nice work Could you show us a picture of how the finished paint job looks?
wow looks cool
man, crazy idea but if it works it'd be amazing
updated the photos for day three
wont your screen and lcd be filled with loads of smudges and dust when you fix it up all back?cos thats what happened when i did a glass and digitiser swap on a iphone 3g..seems like it works the same way on the hero..dirt and grime is a turn off on the iphone 3g once screen is replaced,so thats why now im on a hero.anyways..nice job!!

love it!!! wish i had the guts to break mine apart a paint it funky green like in your photo's
Haha, do you think you only get constructive comments?
It's not only the colors that are ugly... I mean, that's taste really. You have none, but that's not the point here. It looks really bad... I mean, the part between screen and case. The Hero is such a beautiful device and this just looks cheap after the paint job.

See the part about the bit around the screen that's constructive well done.
This is why I said next time I will be taking the digitizer out fully.
I will be staining this area black on this case to make it look nicer.
Why would you say I have no taste that's just not very nice and the sort of thing that is bringing down internet forums. I love the colour blue as you can see it even matches my nail varnish.

Comments like this are a violation of site policy. If you don't like what he did, keep it to yourself. Be respectful of other members, very simple.
not much of a fan of the colour choice,i thought the white of the primer was canny , but good work on the painting! did you wet and dry sand it in between?
Love the colour! Arden blue is the best! The back looks really well done but the front not so much, but probably - as you said - due to working with the digitizer still in; pop it in the oven for 7 minutes @ 60C and it'll come out no problem.
And I was wondering, where did you get the black volume rocker from? I recently swapped my white case for a black unbranded one, but it didnt include the volume rocker and having a really hard time finding one.
Well done for first attempt tho, if you can get the front looking as good as the back then your onto a winner!
I get all my parts from work, not a shop or website sorry.
I will be buying a new front case from work to get a smoother look.
Also maybe this week i will be repainting this case to look better.
sorry i agree with him.Paint job isnt particularly great, you can see alot of wonky bits.Way to ruin a $500 phone imho Great job
Constructive criticism and ideas:
- I don't like the color choices. Most Hero owners would prefer more conservative colors like black, silver, white, gunmetal (dark grey). Try it in these.
- Paint job is very sloppy. I didn't read the entire post but if you're putting tape on it or whatever you're doing while you paint it, do a better job so it looks cleaner/neater.
the glow in the dark back cover is cool..looks rather ghastly..like slimy from ghostbusters...hahaha...that i would put on my hero when bored..but i wouldnt paint the whole phone though..anyways,good job..

Black/Red/Black Evo Mod PERFECTION instructions with photos!!!

Hello, all. I have seen this on a few other sites but I couldn't find it here, and if it has been posted here then I apologize in advance but please know that I don't take credit for this idea, I just wanted to share my modification and post instructions on how I did it because I honestly believe it came out perfect!
To achieve what you see in the pictures below, all you need is some 400 grit sandpaper, some compressed air duster, and some patience. Also, make sure you have a case opener tool and a T-5 torx bit to take the phone apart. Once you get everything separated, just go to work on the black paint with the sandpaper. I used 1x1 inch squares that I cutout from a large sheet; it only took five squares to complete this. Just be patient and use a pen or similar small tube to wrap the sandpaper around to get into the curved areas with ease. Take your time, it is well worth the wait. Once you are all done, take a fresh piece of sandpaper and go over the whole thing quickly one last time, then with a slightly damp cotton cloth wipe away the dust to get that deep red color back and use the air duster to remove the particles. Put everything back together and enjoy!!! The look is totally clean and smooth and so damn sexy! I am going back to my clear case from my otter box just to show it off. I don't think I left anything out but just post any questions and I'll get right back to you.
Once again, thanks to everyone who did this before be and gave me the inspiration. I really think this is the best way to go about it...no chemicals, no razors or blades, no dremel tools. Just some up close and personal TLC with some really really fine sandpaper.
Good luck and post some photos of your results!!!

Wow that looks awesome!!!! I'm going to buy sandpaper tomorrow.
Don't forget to post pictures of your results! I can't stress enough, take your time and it will be worth it. It took me about 90 minutes to get it all done but I am very OCD when it comes to my gadgets lol. Your time may vary, but stick with it and go slow! Thanks for the kudos!!!
Looks really good, but im afraid about my warrenty, I dont think the sprint store would believe me saying it was a EVO LE or something like that.
Nice, would probably look sexy with my carbon fiber phantom skinz, but alas, I'd probably get bored of it after a week. Enjoy you custom EVO.
VERY nice!!! I'll have to do this to my EVO. Thanks
I wouldnt want to lose my warranty over this. Just make sure you replace the warranty tape that goes over the torx screw and they will never be able to prove anything. Just tell them it came like that lol
Will try this soon but im kinda scared but looks good but do you get any cratches on the phone???
If you didn't take the phone apart I would think scratches on the rest of the phone would be impossible to avoid, but when you take the phone apart and are holding only the red frame in your hand while sanding then the rest of the phone isn't affected whatsoever and as you can see in the pictures there are no scratches left on the red part afterwards. On the advice of another XDA member, I am actually going to go over the whole thing once with some 1000 grit sandpaper just to see how, if any, the look improves. But as it stands now, using the 400 grit sandpaper doesn't leave any marks and it looks great!
Has anyone done the white one?
Sent from my PC36100 using XDA App
Umm there are a ton of people here on xda who have done this already...there is a huge thread about it in the general section. Mine has this look too. But it looks good!
sent from my DAMN EVO!
Red scratch mod looks super sexy.
Unfortunately, it's completely irrelevant to me.
I cannot use the phone without a case, since the camera lens is easily scratchable. At the same time, no one has come up with a battery door design, which is as thin and nice looking as the stock, yet has a raised lip to protect the camera (clear battery is kinda pos from pictures).
Success100...I searched a bunch on different times using different keywords but couldn't find it...can you link it here, sir?
i love the look from this mod. i did it as was suggested in the first thread that popped up...scraping the paint off with a razor blade. i did it over a period of a few days to take my time...still, there are marks if you look really closely.
so now i'm going to try taking it apart and doing the sanding. my dad swears to make it smooth i need to get 2000 grit wet sand paper...that sounds high compared to what i've read on here (i know nothing of sand paper and sanding!)
anyone wet sanded theirs and had a good outcome?
can you share the info on how to take it apart without breaking the plastic? (always my concern)
thanks
As it turns out, I took the advice of that other member and did wet sanded mine again today using 1000 grit Wet/Dry paper and it came out amazing! I am sure that 2000 grit will do just as well.
My advice is just to wet the tip of your finger a few times and just rub it around the rim of the plastic and use the same amount on a little 1x1 inch square of the sandpaper. Then just keep working it until you get what you want. I was already so excited with the outcome of the 400 grit because there really weren't scratch marks or anything, and then the 1000 grit just kicked ass!
As far as the plastic cracking concern, once you remove the torx screws, with the innards of the Evo facing you, start the case separation in the lower right corner and go up from there. It isn't that much force needed to separate the case so don't worry too much, sir!
POST PICS!!! lol...good luck and enjoy
Good work!
i cant stress enough using the right paint on this project. You have to get a paint that bonds to the plastic well to prevent chips. also,
try to use the least amount of paint possible
high gloss paint will make your hand sweat
do research on paint used to mod xbox360 controllers. if the paint handles that it'll handle everything.
that RED evo looks sexy!!!
Indiana...there is no paint used for this modification, sir. We're just removing the black paint that is existing to reveal the red ABS plastic that is the actual molded color underneath. Even still, if you are going to paint any part of your Evo to modify the color, that is definitely good advice and I thank you for that as well as the compliment on how it looks, sir.

Thanks for your little walkthrough though, always nice to have multiple options and ways to try something.
I'm still personally too scared to try this.
I want to find a broken EVO for parts and practice or take apart and swap out the red plastic

Atrix Paint Job

hey everyone. i wanted to do this after i chipped a piece of the finish off of my battery cover. so here it goes
INSTRUCTIONS
1) (OPTIONAL) get a coin or something and carefully scrape the logos off of your phone.
2) get an x-acto knife and some contact paper and whatever picture you want on your phone
3) i used a piece of cardboard to cut on. (a cutting mat would be better). tape down your picure. and tape a piece of contact paper over it (make sure the contact paper is bigger then your phone)
4) carefully cut out the image you want.
5) when you are done, peal off the sticky side, take the battery cover off of your phone and stick the contact paper to it.
6) make sure you have spray paint that is friendly with plastics or just a good multi surface spray will do. (thats what i used) and here is where i went wrong so read carefully. the atrix is a glossy phone. so to start shake the paint really well. also you should do 2-3 thin layers of paint. i did 1 slightly thick layer becuase a thin layer didnt cover the whole thing. (it was late, i was excited and i was inpatient(DONT BE LIKE ME ))
when i say layer. spray it on. wait a little while then do it again. im not a painter or an artist so im not the best at this stuff.
anyways.
7) let it dry to the point that its not runny but before its fully dry remove the contact paper so you dont take the paint off with it.
let it sit for as long as your spray paint takes to dry. and enjoy
side notes.
i used 2 dots of sticky tack to mask out the eyes because i couldnt cut out a pen tip sized piece of contact paper. the sticky tack reacted with the paint and became really soft and hard to remove. even hrs later. so. only uses that if its your only option. it does work though.
also... i used uv reactant paint. it lights up nicely under black lights
everything used for this mod cost about $12
if anyone has any questions ill be happy to help to the best of my abilities

sweet! i might try this on the weekend
awesome project, thanks for sharing!
I am kinda scared to paint mine so far, since it's nearly new. but if i get the back scratches, it's certainly an interesting route to take.
Im definitely trying this mine is scratched. And that looks cool. Excuse my ignorance but is contact paper a special type of paper?

thanks guys im glad you like it. and contact paper is the stuff you use to cover books. im not sure how to describe it. its like a big sheet of somewhat stretchy scotch tape. usually comes in a roll. i find its great for masking stuff like this
Looks very nice!

wouldn't something like painters tape be a little easier to mask out a design?

Yes, but you also need some kind of paper to cover the rest of the phone.

i used contact paper because it a great material to cut stencils/masks out of. it sticks to the surface. closes all gaps. and comes off clean. plus you can cut it to almost any size and it doesnt tear easily.
AWSOME
That looks amazing dude. Nice job! Gonna try this myself
