You can do that either by:
Downloading the .cab file to your pc, and then using active sync to move the file to the phone and installing it from there, or download the installation file and then use ActiveSync to install it on your phone (that's the recommended method, because if you need to blow your phone away and reinstall, you can just plug the phone back into the pc and reinstall programs easily.

Unable to install programs via activesync.

i've tried to install AIM... and a webcam program.. both of which install through active sync.. however everytime I try I get the following message on my phone...
"Installation of (whatever).CAB was unsuccessful." and that's about all I get.
Also whenever I connect the phone to my PC is says it's unable to successfully syncronize and asks me to reconnect the device.
MS's support site has been less than helpful... any help you all can give would be greatly appriciated....
Installation problems.....
I am having the same problem too.
Even after a hard reset when I try and install Sprite Backup & Agenda Fusion I keep getting the install error: 'cannot be installed, try another location'
It's driving me up the wall! I would have thought after a hard reset this wouldn't be an issue. I'm now the proud owner of an MDA Pro (Universal) that I can't use because the software I want to install won't install.
Can anyone help me please?
Hi,
Couple of things you might consider / try: -
Establish an activesync connection, then use the "explore" button, navigate to your staorage card, and manually copying the .cab file from your pc to the storage card.
Then on the treo go to file explorer, storage card, and run the cab from the card.
The other thing is to check that you're using activesync 4.1 or later - updates are a free download from MS.
Hope this helps
Angus
Thank you for your suggestions.
Unfortunately i've already tried copying the CAB files straight to the device and launching them produces exactly the same result.
I'm also already using Activesync 4.2 latest version.
Is there anything else I can try?
judging from your sig, you're using a pretty old rom version... I would definitly upgrade it and then give it another go...

applications not installing -not a valid PocketPCapplication

Hi,
I have had my Iwzard for a week now and have this porblem with applications not installingon my wizard. I tried downloading low CPU Skype for pocket PC the from http://www.skype.com/download/skype/mobile/download.html - my Wizard says its not a valid application.
Downloaded Total Commander from:
http://www.ghisler.com/pocketpc.htm ( the ARM/XSCALE/PXA version)
still could not get it to work.
Downloaded pocket doom from some site, did not work either. Always the same message...
And still I was able to download and install the agile messenger program..
It is the skype that has me worried. If you have any suggestions, please let me kow. Thanks!
What ROM do you have installed ?
Where do you install the application - your internal storage or to a storage card ?
I've had this once, and a reset helped me install.
You need to run the install program from a location on your PC through active sync. You can not install it directly from the phone.
dummy me
Sorry guys, this thread was a complete waste of forum space. Turns out as I was still new to this device and the way it functions, I never realized I need to run my programs on the desktop computer and they would install via ActiveSync on the PPC. Don't get me wrong I did my research but not a word on this issue. Not surprised though...people regard that as common sense )
Thanx for answering anyway, apologies for the dumb question!

Programs or Games will not install

Hi all,
Having a spot of trouble trying to install anything onto my MDA Vario, I generally search for WM5 software/games and everytime I try to install I get this message.
XXXXX is not a valid pocket PC application
Any clues?
Thanks
Sounds like your installing an exe that needs to be installed via pc using activesync. You can download activesync from the M$ website. The latest version is 4.2 as far as i know.
If you are downloading exe files, try opening them on the pc first. Most of the exe files are installation files that need to be executed from the computer. Some, very few, are actually compiled executables that only have to be copied to the PPC and run from there.
You will also come across CAB files. These files are my preference because you just copy them to the PPC and execute it there, and it installs the files right on the PPC.
Had a problem running activesync, it used to loop my pc when I attached the device. Since then I reinstalled XP Pro OS and reinstalled activesync (probably old version conflicting)
It now works a treat and loads up all my software!
Many thanks

Acessing Folders in 'MY WINDOWS DEVICE'

Hi im new to this forum, but it comes highly recommended.
Im having trouble accessing my files on the smartphone through my PC. I had the phone previously before i gt a new one and by going to the my mobile device folder in my computer i could access all the files on the phone when it was connected. Though now on the same phone bt everytime i try to access these files the window itself just closes. I am able to do everything else on the phone but to put mp3 I have to use windows media player and place it on the storage card.
I have tried everyhing from reseting the phone to its original status and upgrading the rom. Please can some one help me as I like to use this way to transfer films and videos to the phone and check other folders. Or if anyone knows of another way to transfer movie files and mp3s to the phone.

It does not seem like there is something wrong with your phone but with your desktop! Try to delete the partnership in ActiveSync.
If you have the know-how you also might remove the drivers for your mobile device manually on your desktop.
uninstall ActiveSync completely and then reinstall (maybe the latest version???)
At least I would try that first ...
How would I remove the drivers from my mobile device manually on the desktop.
I have already unistalled the active sync and downloaded the latest version but i'll try it again.
Thankyou
What phone do you have, what version of ActiveSync do you use, and how do you connect to your PC (USB or BT)?
I have an O2 xda mini, I connect via usb and I have version 4.5 of active sync.
Did you delete the partnership yet? After deleting the partnership, can you connect as a guest and then access your phone via Windows explorer?
I just deleted the partnership and tried going through windows explorer. Once I click on mobile device and go into the folder. The same thing happens as when there is a partnership. I click to go into a folder (any folder) and the windows explorer crashes and the error report comes up asking me to debug or send error report. This is a constant thing no matter what i try
Do you have access to another computer? If so, try using that one. If you don't have any problems, then the problem lies in your computer. I recommend getting a registry cleaner to scan and repair any registry errors.

Is not a valid pocketpc application

I downloaded a lot of windows pocketpc applications for my Xperia and none of the worked... The following message comes up: "Is not a valid pocketpc application"
I had a lot of 2003, windows 5, and 6 applications, and games and they cant install or open!
How can I fix this?
RE:
Did you just copy the applications straight to your Xpreia then run the files? If so, you need to run most pocket apps on a PC first, then when you connect your Xperia to a PC then a window will pop up showing you the applications that need to be installed onto your Xperia. This is all Automatic, as long as you have installed the Phone onto your PC.
Hope this helps.

Yeah, that's the only real stupid crap on WM.
I could install any app on Symbian right on phone.
Why the hell they don't make all .CAB's??
I understand with big files, but with 100kB thing is plain stupid,
the whole idea of mobility dies with this.
P.S. I also have some apps like that, so what do I do?
Install it first on PC? And than what, uninstall it after installing on phone??
If you have it "install" on your pc only, it always leaves a .cab file somewhere to be downloaded to your phone later. That's how I extracted the CAB files from the executables I have anyway.
99% of apps can be obtained as cab. Only few I had to install manually (ie there was no CAB or PC EXE installer).
Most are avaialble also aso PC exe, but if someone bothers with EXE installer, he usually has CAB too (in fact he has to, since the PC installation shows some funky windows and then it simply copies the CAB to WM device).
Which is also where you can get the CAB. Unpack the EXE installer (very often possible, Total Commander can do that for example), locate the CAB inside it, and install the CAB manually.

So you had plain luck,
50% of the apps which I want are these f**n .exe. Without any .CAB inside.
But I still didn't get how is the standard operation from PC.
What do I do first? Install the .exe on my computer and than connect phone? And what than?
sync your mobile with activeSync, install the application through pc, activeSync will start the installation on your mobile
Connect the phone to the PC via ActiveSync.
Run the exe on the PC. It installs on PC and copies the cab installer to the phone via ActiveSync. The phone should start the installation automatically.
I still wonder .. what applications are those ?

Great, thanks guys for replies.
I assume while installing I can choose the place of installation (phone/card....)
P.S. Can the .cab installer stay on device, for quick reinstall after upgrade?
Or you have to connect to PC again?
