So I bought myself a WiFi dongle (802.11g) so that I could surf the net/pick up emails on my XDA by using a WiFi link to my laptop which is connected to the internet via ADSL. The laptop recognises the WiFi dongle but I can't get a connection between the laptop and the XDA. Both are in open mode with no security (i'll get the system working and then add security). The XDA can find the signal, says it is conencted, and then drops it again. I know it's not a range/power issue as they are right beside each other! Can anyone offer me advice on how to get the two devices talking please?
If you want internet on your XDA then just setup Active Sync via Bluetooth or Wifi. (AS 3.x)

Well I'm slightly further on than I was earlier - I have now managed to 'connect' to my laptop but I still cant 'see' the internet through the XDA. I can surf using bluetooth over Active synh but the range is too small so I want to use WiFi. I've run the internet sharing wizard but still no joy - what do I have to do?

ok, so I activesync, and now I can explor to the internet
via my notebook (which is connected to the home ADSL via WiFi)
this works v.good, range is just as good as the WiFi at home,
speed is not an issue, and it doesn't eat power like the WiFi card.
But ... here is the rub ...
with the network WiFi card, I can access files on my home PC / notebook.
With this BT link to the internet, the computer's files are inaccessible.
Any solution (except to wait for a complete new BT stack, etc etc)?
I'm using a similar setup, but my battery life becomes alarmingly short when I switch the Bluetooth on. I'd guess I'd be lucky to get 3 hours in total. Is this your experience?

I've just downloaded a 100Mb matrix film to the SD card
via BT from my local machine (using activesync explor)
took about 1 hour.
I think it used less than 20% of the power...
What was the distance between your XDA and bluetooth receiver? I've heard it mentioned that if you go further away (more than 10 feet say) then the XDA switches into a higher power mode to get the signal through. Is this true? What's your experience on this?
So it is possible to connect to the internet using an XDA that is connected to a PC via bluetooth?
I have a router that both my laptop and main pc connect to to go on the net but when i make a bluetooth connection to my laptop all i can seem to do is transfer files.
I did change the network it used at one point but that then knocked out the connection to the net via the laptop.
Is there a tutorial on how to set this up as its the main reason i got my BT adaptor!

you just need to enable "pass thru" to the internet in ActiveSync.
IF you can access the internet when using ActiveSync with USB,
then when u go thru BT it can be done, too. Just follow some
tutorial on how to access the inet via activesync cradle...
regarding BT power and distance - my test was just 2 meter away....
so I dunno how much more energy the long distance BT might need.
Beleive it or not ive been trying to make this work for 3-4 days now. I cant get activesync to work via BT. Only file transfers work at the moment, really starting to wind me up too!
If files trasnfers work, you must be using the widdcom bluetooth stack. I'm sure most people have downgraded to the microsoft stack, with TOwa's patch. With the microsoft stack, its much easier to set upo. Just make sure com ports is enabled as a service on your pc, and that you have com ports enbaled as a way to activesync on active sync 3.7 .

Made progress, active sync is now connecting from the XDA, doesnt seem to be syncronising anything though. And when i try and use explorer it still trys to connect via GPRS rather than bluetooth.
I have selected the maintain connection on Activesync on the XDAII but it seems to connect, authenticate then disconnect without doing a thing.
On the Laptop activesync also says connect when i start it on the XDA then just comes up with not connected???
Still its a step in the right direction.

Yes, Bond your XDA to the PC and connect via activesync. Once connected, open the internet browser on the XDA and you can surf the net. :lol:
How bout without using activesync, cuz i want to connect to internet via bluetooth secretly without knowing the person using the pc.

Maybe you have to set up a network on bluetooth.
I would also like to print thru blutooth on the XDA2, so it uses the PC's printer on the network.

I dont think you can do it by wifi but you can connect the 2 devices by wifi no issue. I tnihk the same applies to the cable either USB or LAN. However you can by bluetooth. All you need to do is set up the exec to be discoverable and get the lap top to look for bluetooth devices and explore the services on them. You will them see the bluetooth modem. Then all you need to do is to create a link to your mobile operators gprs or 3g internet connection in the usual way. You will need to download the setup specific for your network.

Also remeber to up the speed from the default as this assumesgprs and you have afaster connection with 3g.
If you do not have bluetooth on your laptop just buy a BT dongle for about £15 then you are away.

I can see the use but not someone actually making it.
There is a thread on this somewhere.
I connect my universal to my laptop via the sync cable and then the laptop uses the universal as a modem and connects to teh web at 3g speed. The universal comes with wireless modem, you just have to play around to get the drivers on the laptop to see the universal when you plug in.

Hiya, bit of a strange one this. I have an iMac at work with built in Bluetooth. What I'd like to do is surf the net on my Xda Trion using a Bluetooth link to my network-connected iMac.
I've tried going into the Xda in System, connections and trying to change the My ISP connection to use Bluetooth, but it doesn't want to accept it. I know the Mac can see my device but as yet whenever I fire up Pocket Internet Explorer it just uses 3G and GPRS to connect; in fact I see no option to surf using a Bluetooth connection.
I suppose in summary then, I want to use my iMac as one big Bluetooth Modem for my Xda. Is this possible and if so what am I doing wrong?

I've had my dual for about 4 days now, and have been looking at various ways to connect to the internet in the abscence of wifi. My network providers data rates are pretty high, so i was wondering if anyone has been able to browse the net through their PC's internet connection via bluetooth? I've heard of the activesync route, but I haven't been able to get that to work either.
Failing that, how are the rest of you connecting to the net?
I am connecting not at all. Haven't had enough time for giving it a try, because there were some hundred contacts to move from old phone to new phone, one by one via Bluetooth is p.i.t.a.

yes, activesync should work. which OS r u using on your pc?
i'm using XP, and my laptop has bluetooth built in. I've tried getting it to work via Activesync but not having any luck as my Dual can't see the activesync service enabled when connected to the laptop. Did you have to configure specific ports just for activesync?

At work we have a wifi network we can use, and I had this plan to use an old Ipaq/PDA as a wifi/bluetooth gateway for my Touch Dual. The way I could see this working is to connect to wifi via the Ipaq, and 'share' it's internet over bluetooth. Even if I could do this, i'm not sure the dual could connect to a Bluetooth PAN network natively and share it's connection..
