I use Outlook. My email box (on the today screen and in the actual inbox) always shows "1 unread" when there is no message there. If I receive 10 new emails, it lists 11 unread. Is there a way to reset the inbox or edit it in the registry or something. I'm not sure what has confused my Cingular 8125 in thinking there is a message there when there isn't.
Thanks for any help
Check the default options where it sets how far back it should go when displaying messages.
Maybe you have some really old, old unread message.
It is set for just 1 day of old messages. I wonder where the actual email messages are stored. Is there a folder I could browse to with a files explorer? Perhaps I might have to delete the account and then set it up again.

Nah, don't do that! Just set it to show all messages and find the unread one.
Not 100% sure but I think I've had the same issue on my Ipaq and this is what it was. It was sooo long ago...
when I go to my inbox, I'll delete all messages and the inbox is empty, but at the bottom it says there is still 1 unread message....not sure where it's hiding.
I hav exactly the same issue, but not in e-mail but in text messages, and i am sure that i deleted all the text messages
so pdreissen...does your today screen always show a line item that says you have 1 unread text message? My today screen always has that 1 unread email and I'd sure like to get rid of it.
My today screen is fine, but when I'm in outlook, and only in one of my email accounts, the outbox always has one unread (although folder is empty), never been able to change this.
Same problem with Yahoo.
I had this same problem in Yahoo webmail. The culprit turned out to be a peice of spam backdated to 2002! Is this an exchange account? Is it also synched with your desktop? I would concentrate my efforts on the webmail or exchange account itself rather than the Wizard.
Just a thought have you look in every folder in every account...i.e Outlook, text, mms, hotmail, any other email accounts?
Matt
Sorry to resurect this one. But I have the same problem with my text messages. I have cleared out all my text messages so the inbox is totally empty but still on my today screen I have 1 unread text message displayed.
Anyone got any ideas on this as its VERY annoying.thanks.

The above link has a little utility that will fix the problem. I can't remember how I stumbled upon it, but it fixed my issue which is the same as you are having.
thanks pdamath, That fixed it straight off.
Excellent little app.

hi there,
a friend of mine has got a very annoying issue with his hd(blackstone) he got it from orange uk and added his email account which pulled down his emails no probs, for some reason though now it shows 1 unread message on his touchflow (and on the front of s2u2).
I assumed it was the problem with when you go into the account and not read an email properly how it shows highlighted.
This wasn't the case, so ran FixUnreadCount.exe that ive seen from prior posts, this didnt fix it after a softreset.
so....
deleted the entire account still there,
readded a different account, still there,
deleted the account completely
soft reset ran FixUnreadCount.exe
soft reset, still annoyingly there!!
went to edit the registry HKEY_CURRENT_USER\System\State\Messages\sms\Unread\Count and made sure its set to 0
softreset and still!!! showing 1 unread email
can any one suggest anything else as im running out of hair to pull
thanks
I had this once. It was an unread email in the inbox of the 'Outlook Email' account which I had never used. It was 'Welcome to Outlook' or something like that.
Might be worth a look?

Are you sure?? I had the same problem just as evilskanker...and it had to do with Activesync and setting up a dummy exchange server to stop Activesync from running all the time. Deleting the server didn't make it go away. I had to go into Activesync, enable mail for exchange server and then delete the email that was sitting there, then disable the email again. The only other solution was a hard reset...

I'd agree with you as I had the exact same problem.
Hi, I had the same issue when I have done the fake exchange server trick to avoid having ActiveSync launched in the background.
Pehaps your friend has tried the fake server trick...
The way to fix your mail counter issue is to configure again the same fake server, and then, you go to your mails and you'll see a welcome mail in the exchange server inbox.
Delete it, and only then, you can delete the fake exchange server.
Because if you delete the fake server of the fake server trick without deleting the welcome mail, then you have the mail counter issue without any other way of getting rid of it.
ok, here is what you do...
Create an exchange mail account again. This time you will get a Microsoft welcome message again. Now go to your Inbox and tap the Inbox on the top left side to open folders. Then you would see the mail either in your deleted folder or any other folder. Go to that folder and delete the mail. The trick is to read the welcome mail and delete it so that it will not show as unread mail.
Actually, you can even access the Outlook folders without creating the mail account, just go to your SMS inbox and open the folder list from the top left as described above. Then choose the Outlook folder and expand, you would see the inread mail in one of those folders.

This method fixed it for me and I had tried all other options! I had originally only set up Exchange to sync with my Google contacts, but it still received a welcome email...which I had no access to as I had no email accounts set up on my phone!!
So, as above, I recreated my acount (as I had deleted it twice out of frustration) but this time enabled emails to sync also. Went into the email account and deleted the welcome emails of which there were now 3
I've got the same problem with my gmail account. It permanently shows 1 unread email but I'll be damend if I can find it. I've checked everywhere and there's nothing unread. When I browse to my mail folders, the unread one shows under gmail inbox and not under outlook email so I'm not sure if the solution above is relevant to me.
Basically I'd given up hope of fixing it, but if someone has a solution for the gmail account showing 1 unread I'd really appreciate hearing it!
Thanks

Try to go in your messinging application (not TF3D) an take a look at every folder. i guess theres the welcome mail from microsoft (the 1st you get after creating a new account). read or delete it an all will be good
I've done exactly that and can't find it anywhere. Not in TF3D it shows that the unread email resides in my gmail inbox. Makes no sense to me.
Any resolution here yet? I am having the exact same issue. It only happens when I have ActiveSync setup for my google contacts/calendar. I assume that TouchFLO for some reason thinks there should be a mailbox attached to that account, even though there isn't.

i think the problem (see first post) has been that he was checking the wrong registry key.
please check the following keys:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\System\State\Messages\OtherEmail\Unread\Count
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\System\State\Messages\sync\Unread\Count
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\System\State\Messages\totalemail\Unread\Count
HI,
I've got the same problem.
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\System\State\Messages\totalemail \Unread\Count always comes to 1 even if I modify it!
Phantom Message
I had this problem too and it bothered me for a few days. I think you are having a hard time finding the outlook folder with the welcome message.
You need to get to the Windows Mobile inbox screen (not the touch flo screen)
You can get there by clicking inbox from touch flow or start>messaging
Look in the top right hand corner of the screen for the word "inbox". Click the arrow to the right of this.
Here you should see trees - there should be whatever account you setup (gmail, etc...), outlook and sms/mms.
Click the plus sign near outlook to expand it.
I bet you will see the blue 1 next to the inbox under outlook.
I hope this helps.
MOD EDIT
Thread moved to general discussion as not related to rom development
This happens when you add a non email Exchange server (Google Sync).
I just open the SMS inbox and slide to the right to find the 'Welcome Email' and delete it. Never comes back.
Saves creating the fake server or registry editting.
Yeah, this happened to me also. Brand new HTC Touch Pro2, wanting to sync with Google Calendar and Contacts, then I get this "phantom" unread message count. I attempted to connect to my Google Gmail account calendar & contacts via ActiveSync. I made a few mistakes along the way (had to delete & recreate connection once), but am now successful in connecting the phone contact & calendar list with Google. I selected ONLY the Calendar and Contacts to sync via ActiveSync.
The "new message" green circle icon now appears over the "mail" icon in the TouchFlo 3D UI, with the number "3". This number happens to correspond to the number of times I created (then deleted) the ActiveSync connection to Google Calendar & Contacts. When I enter the "Mail" selection (WM's 'Messaging'), I do have a Gmail account established (using IMAP4) but there exists no unread messages.
For a while, I was unable to get the "3" unread Mail message notification to cancel from the TouchFlo 3D UI. I have no unread messages (text or email). I've attempted to delete & re-establish my IMAP4 connection, but the situation remains. I have attempted to delete & re-create the ActiveSync connection to Google, and when I do that step, the phantom quantity of unread messages (the number in the green circle over the "envelope") increases by 1.
The fix mentioned above by VizagDude works. Here it is again with slightly more information:
From TouchFlo 3D's main screen, slide over to the "mail" icon.
click on Menu (bottom right of screen)
click on "Accounts >", then "Accounts...". This brings up the "Messaging" view
Select the "SMS/MMS" account entry (should be the first one in the list). You should see a list of text message threads that you've recently sent.
From the SMS/MMS menu entry, click on the dropdown arrow next to "Inbox" (top left of screen).
In this dropdown, you should see an entry in the tree called "Outlook E-Mail" in the list of folders. Click on the "Outlook E-Mail" entry in the tree.
Within "Outlook E-Mail", open the inbox folder, there will be a number of new emails titled "E-mail Tips and Tricks". (How kind of MS to secretly welcome us to the wonderful world of email )
delete those messages.
The count of unread messages will now match your actual unread messages from other email accounts that are on your phone.
I have the exact same issue, but unlike some of you I dont have problems with the Outlook acc I have, its with my private pop-account. It has a perpetual "1" attached to the inbox. I have cheched all paths to the inbox and there is no way fixing it. Last time hard reset did, but thats hardly favourable...
Agh! This bugs me. I have aboslutely no new email in my account. I've checked all folders. Under the mail app's folder tree it says 2 unread in my pop account's inbox, and says 2 on the touchflo tab. It was one for a while, and now there's a second one there. This happened to me on Dutty's before, now I'm on Miri's WM 6.5 Sense 2.5 v15.
Is there some way to fix this and ideally keep it from happening? None of the fixes above helped.
I have a blackstone with WM 6.1 (Dutty's ROM, 3.9, which I have used for more than 2 weeks with no issues).
Yesterday I noted that I have one unread SMS in my inbox.
Of course I have read all of my text messages!
So I deleted all sms in INBOX. If I open my inbox it shows 0 messages...
But, surprise, I still have the message (when I go back to today view):
SMS / MMS: 1 unread
What can it be?
Thanks and waiting
Saulo
I have to add that this issue happened to me around 2 years ago, on an older device, HTC.
I had to solve this annoying false message by hard reset...I wish to find a less painful solution, this time
Thanks
Saulo
Check the folder "Deleted Items"
This has happened to me several times with lots of different HTC Windows Mobile devices.
Most of the time the error goes away after a while without having to do anything - it just takes a couple of days of sending & receiving messages for it to 'resync'.
Other than that, a hard reset will fix it straight away.
Open ActiveSync ---> Menu ---> Options and check 'E-mail'
Now, goto manila email tab, you will see the outlook email icon, open the email so it is marked as 'read' (and disappears the 1 unread message).
After that, ActiveSync ---> Menu ---> Options and uncheck 'E-mail'.
I hope that this will solve your issue.
I had this a while back.... I think it was to do with the default welcome messahe you get when you set up your email...... Have a look in your folders deleted items especially and you should find it!
if this is the same annoying problem i had it has something to do with htc sending you a welcome message and placing it in a outlook account folder which isnt actually an account took me weeks to solve it and when i called htc support they said i would need to send my phone in for repairs.... retards xDD
go to Mail--> Menu--> Accounts --> Accounts
then it should show you the mail in there just remove it and problem solved
Dear All
I tried all the solutions proposed by you, included jolas and roxs... I have even tried to use the options clear all SMS/MMS, but... NO WAY. My SMS inbox still shows 1 message
Of course I have deleted already all messages in inbox, sent, outbox, deleted items, draft
And to make it more sure I have even deteled all EMAILS (outlook emails) from all folders!
I am getting crazy at this. I really dislike to make a hard reset, since I have many applications installed and no other issues, expect this annoying problem...
Please help

Can somebody explain to me how to force ActiveSync to re-sync all my databases?
Will it work?
Thanks a lot

My emails on my Pop3 account "not outlook" disappear every day or so, is there a setting that deletes emails? I can't seem to find it.
Need a little more info. Are they disappearing on just the phone or in your account period? Are they disappearing because you only have the phone set for that account to download a certain number of days/weeks and they are older than that? Are these emails in the main Inbox or other folders. Please elaborate some more.
They disappear from my Imagio, not from the email server. It downloads new messages every time it does it's send/receive, but once a day the Inbox is emptied out.
I don't use outlook on the phone nor does it receive emails, even thought I see it on the emails list.
Check this:
Go to the mail tab, select Inbox, then Menu -> Tools -> Options (may have to scroll the list for some of these items) then Send/Receive Schedule. For the "Download messages" drop-down option do you have Today's messages in there? That means it will only pull each days messages and drop any that are older. Change this to show you whatever amount you wish such as 3 days, 1 week, 2 weeks, etc. Hope that helps.
Mine is set to "All Messages" in the drop menu...
I had that issue too... it sucked.. I am using gmail and switched to IMAP and it now seems to have fixed.. I also am now using google sync through outlook and it seems to push email quite well..
m.google.com/sync from your computer will give you all the instructions as well.. I was worried about battery usage but today was my first full day using google sync and it doesnt seem to drainm battery too much
So far it looks like the issue resided on my Outlook 2003 deleting emails of the server, I had to change the option to "Leave a copy of messages on the server" checked and the amount of days to do so.
I will post in a few days how many emails stay on my phone.
Here's a thought: what if you set an Outlook rule to move your Inbox mail into a different folder? Just be sure that the new folder is set to sync.
My issue was resolved already, I love this phone...
There's been some sporadic posts of this around the net, but nothing concrete.
I've got a AWS N1 on WIND Mobile (Canadian company) and GMAIL push works perfectly fine (basically instantaneous) if emails lands in my Inbox.
If however, email lands in a Gmail Label (that is set to auto-archive, ie. bypass the inbox and go directly into the label), the N1 will NOT notify me that I have new mail.
So basically:
Email ---> Inbox = Notification
Email ---> Label (w/ archiving) = NO Notification
Has anyone noticed this before? Is this just the way Gmail functions on the N1?

Well, that's how Gmail works... on your PC.
Ok, gmail labels are somewhat confusing, so I'll explain how they work with an example:
Open up gmail.com on your PC.
Send an email to yourself that will get autoarchived.
Will the email show up in your inbox?
No, because it's autoarchived.
So why would you get a notification on your phone if you don't get a new email in your inbox?
Get rid of the auto-archiving if you want the notifications to pop up.
Notifications on your phone mirror your INBOX.

Which leads to a problem i occassionally have; I have my Gmail box set up for multiple inboxes; everything from my MAIN Gmail address comes into the inbox, as well as everything from 3 other gmail address; the other three however, are autolabeled upon receipt respectively; every so often, I'll get an email on one of these 3 emails. My N1 will show that I have an unread email (across the top, it'll say "Inbox (1)"), but I can't see the actual new msg. I'll then log into my main gmail account on the PC, and sure enough I have a new email in my inbox, with both the "inbox" and alternate label applied. Once I mark it as read or delete it, my N1 then shows that I have (0) unread msgs. It's random, and doesn't apply to just any single email address I have funneled into my main Gmail Inbox. I'm at a bit of a loss. If anyone has any constructive ideas (besides "don't use multiple inboxes), I'd love to hear them.

Changes labels to all mail, then change back to inbox.
You'll see the unread one there.
Thank's for straightening that out Paul.
I figured as much, but just wanted to be sure I wasn't experiencing some weird glitch. It's a little bit of a pain to have all mail in the inbox as it really does clutter up the place.
Oh well...
This did get me thinking though. Since the GMAIL app is basically running all the time on the phone, would it not be possible to write code that would have the GMAIL app issue a notification when it receives an email that goes straight into a label and not the inbox? Especially if that label is set to sync.

Unfortunately, Google Apps (like Gmail) are closed-source. Not much anyone can do with em.
You might be able to use the secondary Mail app to add Gmail as POP or IMAP and it might give notifications for other labels, not sure.
Here it is. Go Into your Gmail settings on your desktop computer. click on settings in the upper right corner, click on Forwarding and POP/IMAP, disable IMAP and enable POP for all email. I also selected delete Gmail when accessed with POP.
This solves the problem with email notification not disappearing immediately after you click on the email, it gets you all your email promptly and it does not show emails in your inbox, for ex. you have 3 unread emails, you go to check and there are not any? So it fixes that issue. It syncs perfectly with the desktop sever. I had constant problem with above issues. So yeah the culprit seems to be IMAP. I tested this on Froyo and 2.1 Vanilla. Works for both. I imagine it will work on Sense too.
I just noticed this problem last night.. the Gmail Unread Count widget tells me 6 new emails, the Gmail app says Inbox (6) at the top, but there are no unread messages! Going to Gmail on my desktop shows no mention of these 6 supposedly unread emails.
Just tried your trick, but the problem's still there. Running Froyo here.

So what exactly is the gmail problem that requires this solution? Your description is quite convoluted and confusing. Email notification not disappearing when you expect it to, or messages not showing in your inbox? Either way seems to me like nxt says. Probably just a case of your mail being hidden in your SPAM label.
Notification tells me there is new gmail. I tap the notification and read the mail. Return to home screen and notification has gone. Bog standard and it works perfectly fine for me.

Cool. Good you figured it out. I'm glad helped out someone. I couldn't figure out why everytime I checked my inbox there wouldn't be any messages. I went to desktop and saw the messages in my inbox that I had already read. Also once you click on notification you have to hit back arrow to get the notification to disappear. Solved that as well.

This happens to all versions of android. Its just not syncing with gmail correctly, so you phone shows no new emails, but says thier is 5 unread. If you log on to gmail you will see emails you marked as read unread. All you got to do to fix is to mark them as read from within gmail web client.

What do you mean by "Phone....says there is 5 unread". I assume you mean the Gmail client on your phone lists them in BOLD? If so, how can you say in the next breath "If you log on to gmail you will see emails you marked as read unread" ? You have just said they are unread on the Phone side, so why would you expect to see them as marked read in gmail web client.
I can toggle messages on the phone between read and unread and within a few seconds the changes are reflected in the gmail web client. So all good here.
Perhaps it can happen to all version but it does not happen to everyone. If it was a widespread issue, I think we would be hearing a lot more fuss about it. My Gmail works fine and does not do what you describe. I have IMAP enabled.

Honestly, the stock GMail app works like a charm for me; I haven't had to do any changing on my accounts. Heck, I was able to sync my University of Phoenix e-mail account as we use GMail as well.
Easy fix
All you have to do is select on labels, go to all mail, it will show a message you have previously read as unread. Then just mark it read again and problem is solved.

This has happened to me on a few occasions too. What he means is that when you get a Gmail notification THEN you check it with your phone and lets say you delete it with your phone. However, the next time you get sent an email and get a notification, when you check your gmail it will list your unread emails as (2) instead of (1). When you go into your gmail application to check, it also says unread (2), BUT you will only see one email.
Now if you go and check your Gmail using your computer, you will see both the emails, the one you read then deleted and the one you just received.
I know this is not a widespread problem because this has happened intermittently to me and has not happened for a while.
But good job on finding a fix for those that do suffer this small but annoying sync problem.

This is the bit where you guys have me confused. The only way I can tell unread messages in the gmail on my phone is by the bolding and the corresponding number in brackets in the header. So I cannot see how you can get the conflicting info within the gmail app itself on the phone?

Clearly I am missing something obvious. I can conceive how the Gmail notification bar indicator count could differ. But I cant see where you see the difference within the android gmail app itself. Is it that you get a different number of bold messages to the number in brackets?
In any case - main thing is you got the problem sorted I guess.
I used to get the gmail error but since upgrading to 2.2 beta it works so smoothly now.
Why are you redirecting your gmail account to the email application through exchange anyways?
The gmail application supports push.

Basically the number in the brackets show you have 2 unread emails but your phone gmail client isn't showing any unread messages. They are all gray and read. Then if you log on to the web client you will see 2 unread messages.
Its just a simple sync issue.
Better solution to the sync issue (where for example the phone says Inbox(2) but shows no unread messages):
Manage applications, filter all, Gmail Storage. Clear data. Then re-open Gmail and let it resync. This always fixes it for me.
I only ever get this problem after a) flashing a new ROM or backup, or b) turning on a phone I haven't used in a while.
