You can access them by using MAPI, but it's not easy...

You should take care of the message-body is saved in the subject-property and therefore limited in size, but can be solved by other methods.
I don't know other ways to do that. Maybe other users know how to do that.
It would be great if you succeed in this.

Best Application for sms in order to the backup is:
Jeyo Mobile Extender
It's a plugin for Outlook
Here is in short description message from developer:
Jeyo Mobile Extender adds mobile text messaging capabilities to your Outlook application through a Windows Mobile Smartphone or Pocket PC phone. With this add-on program, you can exchange messages with other mobile phone users anywhere around the world directly from your Outlook. Jeyo Mobile Extender makes text messaging as simple and easy as email.

Works very good!

Jeyo Mobile Extender is an Outlook plugin, and I am having too much problems with Outlook already.
I also tried those .cab files extraxted from O2 atom or Imate JASJAM, but to no avail (compatibility issues).
waiting for other suggestions

Well I don't have any problems with Jeyo Mobile Extender.
Are you using original?

Jeyo Mobile Companion is the application which doesn't need Outlook and does the SMS sync and backup plus a ton more.
I don't use Outlook as well so it's great for me. It's a lean standalone app.

txt transfer

Can any one advice me of either another PDA application or a means of transerring txts from my XDA Exec so i can retain them if have to Hard reset device?
Whilst I don't have an Exec so I can't try this out, I use Jeyo Mobile Commander to backup my SMSes and contacts - it works flawlessly with my device, and as it works through ActiveSync chances are it'll work with the Exec too... PM me for more info.

sorry, not sure i understand your question... do you want to backup your txt files? just copy them to a SD card ... or to the PC via activesync or via wlan (without AS). plenty of options available.
In the UK, txts is pretty much used as an everyday slang for 'text messages' (txts.. sending a text, etc) - sorry if we confused you

SMS transfer
Apologies, it is the sms and mms i want to be able to copy from XDA so i dont lose them when ROM upgrade or hard reset is completed.
Is Jeyo Mobile Commander compatible with the XDA EXEC? also there seems to be a new product Jeyo Pocket Companion, does that do the same?
Newbie so bear with me please.
Thanks for your help.

i know for a fact that jeyo (to backup sms's) is compatible with the exec, but i never tried it, don't know exactly which program you need..
anyway does anyone know of a solution to backup them that doesn't need the pc and syncing? sms export to a txt file or csv or anything would be even better.
The only program I've found which can backup your texts without using ActiveSync is a program called smsBackup - but it's quite buggy, and you still have to copy the file off yourself (it just saves the backup file in its Program Files folder, and doesn't ever prompt you to save it anywhere else) - it's free though, so I suppose you can 'work with it' considering the price point

the problem is that this program is not wm5 compatible.
Ah, rats.
To be honest, Jeyo Mobile Commander is WELL worth using ActiveSync for - it's a really, really useful program and doesn't require anything installed on your mobile device to work, so that's even better.

the bad thing is that i'd have to start using outlook then
well, i'll see... if nothing else...
afaik, if you're just using the bog standard New -> Message method of sending texts on your phone, while it does store the messages on the phone in the Outlook hive along with MMSes and emails synced from Outlook, I don't believe you need Outlook on your PC to save and/or restore them, if you catch my drift...

sorry, how do you mean the part about using the new/message method. i just press reply many times after seeing the notification without going into the messaging application.
would be real cool if i don't need outlook for this. i'll definitely check this out. thanks once more.
Well I just use the XDA's regular messaging app for texting too, which I know stores text messages in a pooled area along with mesages synced in from Outlook and MMS messages.
But the Jeyo app just reads my SMSes directly from the phone (I can watch it as it populates the list realtime), and when I back up my messages it saves them directly to its own format file, and restores them directly back again. Outlook is never involved.
2 versions
I think there are 2 versions of Jeyo...
1. Is a standalong app
2. Is a build ontop of Outlook...
What've i've noticed is application 1, does not read sub folders, which i've found to be annoying, as i'm on the verge of a hard reset myself, and i have built up quite a collection of sms's now...
Wish there was an easy answer to this...
Maby SPB Backup is something to look into?
http://www.spbsoftwarehouse.com/products/backup/?en
Not sure if it does sms/mms, but worth a try
I use Jeyo Mobile Commander to back up my txt msgs, I recently had to send my MDA Pro back to T-mobile so i used Jeyo to save my txt onto my computer and transfered them to my MDA III(BA) until i got my MDA Pro (Universal) back. It works a charm and backs up txt nicley, updates all the current txt on the computer every time you connect it to activesync, the only thing that i would have liked it to do would be to backup MMS which it doesn't have the option for as far as i can see, but apart from that you can backup your txt, contacts, call history and even send txt directly from your computer once its connected to you phone.
Yeah, I noted that it doesn't (can't? or won't?) back up MMS messages, possibly because of the non-standard way in which the XDAs create them (I noticed that the actual MMs composition software is third party, maybe that's got something to do with it...) Aside from that, I'm absolutely happy with the software. The ability to send text messages straight from my PC while my phone's docked is VERY cool
ok problem solved.. a friend of mine is writing a brilliant program that can export the sms's on the device without a pc. basically already working ok, just needs some polishing 8)
Tell him I'd love to beta test it for him, if he needs testers!

How to back up text messages

Hi,
I am new here......
I wanna back up the text messages that my wife sent to me...
How can I transfer it to my pc ??
thanks guys !!
Hi,which prophet ? Do you want to backup sms or others messages ?
Jeyo Mobile Companion or Jeyo Mobile Extender.
SMS Exporter enables you to save messages in text or csv format.
I use Jeyo Mobile Companion and it works flawlessly.
Is there a link to SMS Exporter?
Btw, Jeyo exports to Text files as well as its own database files, through which you can import/export messages...which basically means you can restore all your messages if ever you lose them (as opposed to text files through which you can't).

never got jeyo to work with my outlook 2002 it always says "not connected" even if the phone is synced with the pc.
Jeyo Mobile Companion doesn't need Outlook to sync!
Jeyo's other product does. Mobile companion is a standalone application which does the job very beautifully. Give it a try.
would you give us a link for jeyo? :?
thanks for clearing this up. i'm using the wrong application  i now have it installed in my laptop... and it's good!
anyway, i got the app by googling jeyo mobile companion, while there's a keygen somewhere in this forum. try searching for it.
Here it is:
http://www.jeyo.com/companion.asp
In fact, Jeyo is so good...earlier I was using an MS Smartphone device (the O2 XPhone II). When I migrated from that to my prophet, all I did was backup my messages from that phone, then connect my prophet (it instantly worked with Jeyo) and import the backup.
Done!

Transfer SMS between phones?

Hi, I have upgraded from the BlueAngel to the Hermes and would like to transfer my sms across, is there any way of doing this?
I tried spb backup but it complains about missing folders with the file structure being different. Any ideas please? Thanks
bump. Any one??
If you use Outlook on your desktop, try Jeyo Mobile Extender ... it's a little clumsy, because it requires you to transfer the SMSes folder-by-folder to the desktop, then transfering them back, folder-by-folder, to the Hermes ...

Great post (even if it is 2 years old) i just managed to grab 2.5 version and it works great
The power of search is amazing

Does the PIM Backup or some other backup utils work? Backup on your old one, and restore only sms on your new one.

Archive SMS messages to PC?

Hi!
Does anyone know of a (preferably free!) PC application that will allow the archival of SMS messages?
What I would like to do is to copy all of my messages from my X1 to my PC then delete all messages from my X1 and then just restore a subset of them back onto my X1.
Any help would be appreciated!
Regards,
Alan
Hi. You can do that with the little app called SMS Import. This app allows you to export your stored textmessages into a *.xml-file. This file you can save on your PC, you can edit it with notepad and so you can also delete some messages before you re-import the messages to your phone.
Cheers

The webpage is www.jeyo.com . Can recommend this, because it works flawlesly

It works. You have to save the file to My Documents. For some reason it can't save to SD Card (On my phone). I have also created an XSL Stylesheet for this applicaiton which will sort out all inbox messages (SmsImport stores ALL folders) and convert them to a proprietary XML format I designed myself, which allows you to store MMS as well (You have to manually add links to pictures etc though) and a further Stylesheet which will transform the XML to XHTML when you open the XML file and offer filtering functions with RegExp (Through JavaScript). Perfect way to manage everything for me.
This is free http://www.efficasoft.com/mobileexpress/index.html

This service is kinda weird. When I first synced my phone to the myphone service, it backed up all my data to the site (contacts, sms, pics, videos, etc.). But now I don't know how to sync from the phone to the myphone. Any changes you made from the myphone service will also change in your device as well.

under programs there is a program called myphone that you use?

Syncronize SMS with active sync?

there is a way for syncronize sms (like the e-mails) with active sync? or other ways?
sync from where to where?
From Phone to PC and vise versa.
I am looking for some thing like that as well for my samsung omnia i900. If you can please help.
thats a pretty good idea, i always seem to sometimes lose my texts for stupid reasons (hard resets without backups, accidental deletion, etc.)
syncronizing them with a program that resides on a pc seems like a good backup idea
anyone know of anything that does this?
http://myphone.microsoft.com ?
Exchange Server 2010
my phone is integrated with active sync?
I don't get it as well. Any body knows about how to setup emails on my storage? i got one but the reg file i have is giving me an syntax error if some body can fix it
YES.... It's working for SMS,CONTACT etc... but all this data is ONLINE nad i am looking for some OFFLINE solution.
