Differentiating categories in a Calender - 8125, K-JAM, P4300, MDA Vario General

Hi all,
Before you say it, I have searched the forums and have indeed found loads calender applications (one looks particularly good from meschle). However the question I can't find an answer to is this;
I used to have a Palm Tungsten E (basic I know but we all have to start somewhere!) and the calender on that allowed me to set different colours to different categories i.e Blue = business, Red = Personnal, Yellow = holidays and so on. Then if i went to month view I could see at a glance different colours for different days. Obviously the standard calender application with the O2 XDA Mini s shows everything in blue.
Do any of the calender applications available allow me to set different colours for different categories?
I am currently running Spb Pocket+, Spb Time, and phonealarm (at least I think its phonealarm) so it would need to run hapily alongside them.
Incidently I am not to bothered about the calender running on the today screen, so long as I can put a shortcut to it in Pocket+.
Thanks for you help.
Matt.

Anyone any ideas? Still can't find a post anywhere that mentions this 'facility'.

You can try AgendaFusion or PocketInformant (or something like that)

have you used either of these at all? ae they any good?

I've tried Pocket Informant, it is good, but rather heavy for my usage.

Thanks, Downloaded the trial of Pocketinformant today and it seems to do exactly what I want. Now I've just got to work out what all the different settings do.
Thanks.
Matt

WM5: Does anyone else miss the 'New' menu?

Hello Gurus and loyal subjects (of which I am definitely the latter)!
I have been using WM5 (Magneto) for some time now and while generally impressed, especially with the stability, I really miss the 'new' menu that is on WM2003/SE at the bottom left of the today screen. I used to use it a lot and now find it long-winded going into the application and then clicking new.
Does anyone know of a workaround/replacement for this?
Many Thanks,
Coj
I don't know about the other stuff - though I'm sure there are switches for the .exe's associated, but with regards to messages I have a series of shortcuts in Pocket Plus to start txt messages to different people.
Eg, the .lnk when imported into Notepad on the PC reads:
19#"\windows\tmail.exe" -To "SoNSo <+44 (1234) 567890>" - though MS changed the -acc switch so it doesn't allow you to specify whether it be SMS / Outlook / POP3 etc.
Maybe you could do something similar? Admittedly it wouldn't be like the New menu but if you can find the switches for the .exe's involved I'm sure it would be of help.
Cheers

half a solution
Hi, thanks for this tip, I have managed to use it in pocket plus and can now create a blank sms in two taps from the today screen (same as in 2003). will keep my eyes open for a switch for selecting text messages as the type.
someone posted, I think buzz, tray launch and more in the 1.50h discussion, and that allows you to add in a way the new menu to the same place where the bluetooth is, you're not using any extra space because that is already taken up... so hope that helps a bit, I know I missed the new then notes, so I added an link to it

Actual tasks on today screen.

What program do I need to use that will enable me to have tasks on the today screen with a new line for each one ? All you get with the built in is no of active tasks ie 1 active task.
I would like something like
take dog for a walk.
remember to buy dog to take for a walk
watch some tv
etc...
Is there just a little today plugin you can get rather than one of those whole packages that does loads of stuff ?
spb diary will allow this, but it also extensively changes your diary contacts and notes features.
alternatively, i use calendar entries for this, tick them as private, show calendar for all upcoming events.
TaskPlus should do the job..I havn't tested it out on WM2005 but don't see any reason for it not to work.
You can get it here http://freewareppc.com/utilities/taskplus.shtml

New Version of Pocket Informant ready to go

Have a look over at http://www.pocketinformant.com/Forums/index.php?showtopic=8904&st=0 for the latest (Release Candidate) of Pocket Informant.
Its well worth installing as it has a much smaller memory footprint (see the discusion in the forum above), and seems a lot faster to me. Also if you can find any bugs, make sure you post them into the forum.... I found one yesturday, and its been fixed already.
The guys at Web IS seem to have done a great job (and no, I'm not linked to them in any way.... its just that their product makes the PDA calendar features usable!!!)
Regards

Oh !£@[email protected]!&&! Installed this and now my right soft-key won't bring up the internal (default) contact program (which is so much better than the one in pocketinformant). Anyone know how to change it back? I managed it before but no amount of registry changing seems to work now
I'm not an expert on this, but one suggestion I would make is that you tap on the PI icon on the bottom of the screen (the red dot surrounded by a multicolour ring) and de-select "Make Default PIM" ... this then makes all the MSFT links work with the MSFT apps rather than PI... hope this helps

This is one of the beefs I (and several others) have with PI, and AF for that matter, which seem to fall on deaf ears in their cosy cartel. Why won't they let the user choose which modules they want to use, instead of their software taking over the whole machine?
If you installed a non-MS planner on your Desktop PC, you wouldn't stand for it replacing all your other PIM apps too. So why should you on the PocketPC?
There is a page in the wiki that shows the registry settings for the soft keys, but I found this method unreliable. I managed to change the text but the app remained at the default setting.
The way I did it was to download Buzz's SoftKeyAppletEx, which goes into your control panel [you do need to register to download the file].
Code:
Description:
This is a replacement applet for the SoftKeyApplet.cpl. I called it SoftKeyAppletEx.cpl (to be original) ;)
This applet does exactly the same thing, but with more features
1. you can browse your ppc to get the desired application or link dedicated to the soft key.
2. you can change the name shown on the soft key.
3. you can place the applet icon on the settings tab you want (personal, system, connections).
4. you can specify only one soft key (left or right) or both
5. you can reset to defaults, so I think it's the phone and the calendar
That's really useful stuff - thanks!
As others have said, I want to use PI for my Diary but the built-in contacts application - which is far better for quick dialling etc.
I still have a problem though - PI seems to have replaced my /Windows/poutlook.lnk file with its own, so if I make the right soft-button point to this file it still runs PI. Can anyone send me their default contacts.lnk file (and possibly poutlook.exe too?) or tell me how to make a new link to the default contacts application (which I assume must still be in ROM?)
Thanks all. Love PI but this hijacking on my contacts is really annoying!

I tried this and I can report some success. I use PocketBreeze on the Today screen which is tightly linked to PI. Nothing I say here is relevant if you don't use PocketBreeze.
Now, with PI the non-default PIM, my PocketBreeze links take me to PI's calendar, tasks and contacts applications. My hardware contacts button and the contacts soft key in the phone now take me to Pocket Outlook's contacts app.
Couple of caveats: PI does seem to revert to being the default PIM after a soft reset. Also, the 'special days' feature in PB (lists upcoming birthdays and anniversaries) seems to grow duplicate entries over time, but these can be cleared with a soft reset. It's never worked properly for me anyway so could be unrelated.
I have yet to see any problems syncing. I do expect it to work OK as I believe that PO and PI run off the same database.
Hope this helps those with PB and PI.

I agree. Rev 4 was often very slooowww, although I had installed it in RAM. But this new version is different. The footprint is much smaller in WM5.
But although I have installed the new version entirely on the storage card, it is MUCH FASTER now!
I found some other improvements too, like the timeline now shows you total hours for your different projects, and there is a real fullscreen option now.
Didn't find any bugs so far, but I just downloaded it two days ago.
Cheers and thanks to this great forum! I have benefitted a lot already from the tips and tricks posted here

First Programs for a newbie

hiya
getting a t-mobile w'n'walk for £42 a month, phone for free. Good deal
So whats the first thing, apart from changing the today's screen should i do
whats the programs you think are essential?
just to let you know I'm more a web browser, texter sort of person
ta for all ya help and opinion much appreciated ;-)
ps: how do i get the smiley in the actual msg? and how do i record my phone, rom details at the bottom
That's a tough one, everyone is so individual in what they want, what they find irritating in the initial set up, what they like and how much they want to spend.
Personally the first thing I always want to know on my device is that all programs are closed down when I think they are, how much battery I have left, and how much storage room I have. So, my first install is usually a task manager with the above. Personally I use Spb Pocket Plus, which also gives me memory/power indicators, task manager, PIE additions, safe mode and program shortcuts. But, you can find free applications that do all these things. Ilauncher is another good one, but that's not free either.
My second install is something to show me, on my today screen very efficiently my diary, contacts, messages, birthdays, notes, tasks etc. Two good ones are Spb Diary and SBSH Pocket Breeze. These are not free, but to me they are essential.
After that, I would think most people would install a 'proper' diary program like Pocket Informant or Agenda Fusion, or recently Agendaone. These make using the diary easier and give you sometimes more options than on Outlook!
After that, it's up to you, most people have a book reader eg Mobipocket or Ereader, a input tool eg Calligrapher, Fitaly or Tengo.
Maybe a phone profile manager eg Phonealarm.
The choice is endless. Make sure that you use the x days of free trial with each application to make sure it works for you correctly on your device and it does what you want.
Most important have fun
thanks
thats a useful list
i have a program on my P910i called phone secure
if i lost it and someone try to put in another sim card it sends a msg to a designated number and locks the phone
does pocket pc have something like that
I have seen something like that, it's quite recent. Best thing is to look on the software sites eg Handango, PocketGear, Mobihand. I'm sure they have something like that.
I must concur with marrisa4755. Start with spb, and see how you like it. It'll give you a good clue as to what is out there, and it's my software of choice. Also, look for Resco Explorer as your file browser. It's apparently the best file browser.
By the way, have a look at the spb unithemes. very nice, and you get them free if you register!
Don't forget to check out my app reviews here at the General forum either - see http://forum.xda-developers.com/forumdisplay.php?f=256
phone secure
hiya
found Phone Security 1.1.2.2 on PocketGear that does exactly what i need
thanks for all the advise
oohh just found this on
its called Eye on the Theif Pocket PC from Mobihand
http://www.mobihand.com/clove/product.asp?id=9966
Install everything you think you might need and everthing people tell you you can't live without...
... then after a month of problems, slowness, hangs and conflicts do a hard reset and install nothing!
IMHO
PSS ... no!
Phone Security System has a problem: First data connection works, but if you disconnect or you get a phone call you will not be able to connect again until re-boot.
So beware. Develooper did not fix this so far... I was using a registered version...
And it took me 3 days to find out. Erro message will be "APN cannot be found", where APN in my case is "web.vodafone.de". Have fun...

Tasks software

Hello!
Anybody know any good tasks software out there? I searched and searched and couldn't find anything that suits me. Either too many useless additional features, or they simply look bad.
I'm looking for something like the old Memento on the even older Nokia 3310, if anybody remembers it, but more customizable. And maybe with a today plugin too.
My dream would be an additional Tasks tab in touchflo3d, but I'm guessing that will remain in it's dream state.
Any ideas? Thanks!
Take care!

Hi!
I have got 2 questions for you:
1) Do you mean a TaskManager to quit running programs or do you mean an application for tasks like Outlook tasks?
2) I don't know the programs you have written about. Do you need a kind of "Touch Task" app?
no, not task manager, tasks as in "to do" list. simple, plain task list. organizer style. like the built-in tasks application in winmobile, but more (MORE) user friendly. that one just doesn't do the trick for me.

I've been using Pocket Informant and Agenda Fusion, but according to your question - too complicated with no convenient "touch interface". Now I'm using http://www.sbsh.net/products/windows_mobile_pocket_pc/calendar_touch
I'm interesting in other suggestions...

Unfortunately - yes, it is
Hi,
I've been searching for the same thing but haven't really found one.
I really like the Task2Gather https://task2gather.com/site/windows-mobile-task-management.html
But since they don't support offline mode it's pretty much useless...
They are working on an offline version but when I emailed them they are only planning for the Iphone version... Maybe if more people email them about the Windows version they will put more effort in it.
thanks, i tried calendar touch, but it still is too complex... nevertheless, it's not bad. and that task 2 gather... why only online? i don't see the point. shopping lists, ok, and what else?i'm not looking for a tool designed for bussiness agents or corporations, i'm just looking for a simple tasks list.
don't get me wrong, i'm not mad at you. thanks, anyway.
What's wrong with the standard tasks program?
I'm pretty happy with SPB Diary, which is a today plugin rather than a stand-alone application. It acts as a front-end for pocket outlook & tasks and is nicely customisable. It integrates nicely with SPB Weather and works best when combined with Pocket Plus.
Personally I've tried a lot of task organizers, I feel better with tasks shown in tree structure so I found an excelent freeware application for Pc "To-do List" (http://abstractspoon.pbworks.com/) that I synchronise with "my life organized" on my PPC (http://www.mylifeorganized.net/)
I hope will help...
task
Hello,
I am using that one : http://www.mabware.com/
Very simple, but very flexible;
i like it!
I've tried lots of calendars out over time and do you know I find thumbcal the best. The new version is fast and simple to use and looks nice and clean. The task page of it is a must have for me
thanks a lot for your feed-back. i can't believe that, even though i searched for something like those apps, i didn't find them. i think i'm going with my life organized. even though it's a bit more complex than i need, it has a lot of functionality. thanks again!
