I have just moved up to the Charmer (Compact 2) and was wondering if there is an easy way to copy all contacts from my BA running Windows Mobile 2003 SE to my Compact running Windows mobile 5. I know I can probably use infrared/Bluetooth but was hoping for a straight drag and drop. Any help as always appreciated.
Thanks JD76
I would suggest that you do a active syn to your Outlook in your PC for easy and sure transfers of your contacts.
Another way is to save your contacts on the SIM. Read

Or, save the PIM into your SD card. However, I'm not sure if this works for cross platform from WM2K to WM5. Read

Thanks Hamin much appreciated. You pointed me to a couple of good links. Nice to know the true spirt of the group still exists. By checking the links out it may be possible to copy all my data from my BA to my Charmer, including txt msgs etc? This is very much appreciated. Thanks again...JD76
Harmin thanks but checked out the links. The contact copier only applies to WM5 so can't copy from 2003 to WM5 also on my BA has the ability to backup contacts using a program but my charmer does not have a tool for restoring my contacts..so back to the drawing board. Thanks JD76.

Hi All,
I'm sure this has been asked before so I apologise for repeating the question, but please can anyone tell me how I can syncronize or save my SMS's from my XDAII to my desktop PC so I don't loose them when I upgrade the Rom or do a hard reset.
I cannot believe they did not think about including this functionality, my old PDA running windows CE 1.0 was able to do it so why O2/Microsoft didn't think people would want to be able to do this is beyond me!
I have figured out if you copy the Messaging folder you get som of the sent sms's as *.mpb files which you can open in notepad but this is really an acceptable solution and I only seem to be able to see the sent SMS's not the received ones.
Thanks for any help or suggestions.

My thanks to buzz on his great work with WM2005, but I have a small problem regarding importing of contacts....as in i can't
I have the contacts list updated using xbackup but as we know the xbackup application doesn't work with wm2005. But i also have a full backup of my 2003SE ROM on my PC which surely must include my contacts information too. Now i have the STGViewer application and can browse all the files in it but I don't know where the file is that contains all the contact information and if it is even possible to transfer this across to WM2005. At the very least is there an application that will let me import this information into Outlook so i can sync or even present the data in a mannor so i can manually re-enter the contacts back into my phone...any ideas anyone?

Because or requirements at my job, we don't use Outlook. We use SyncML to sync contacts and calendar events with our internal server. Really nice being able to sync without hooking ot a computer and anyplace you have GPRS / WiFi access.
Here's a post where I put some info and links about it:

i need an exactly same like palm desktop to sync my contact and calender when sync with usb cable
zzzzzzzzzzzz
any 1 have third party software that can sync contact to desktop to view and edit??
i have try uninstall outlook 2003 and activesync 4.5 many time, and the result remain the same
I have had the ActiveSync problem since 10/2006 and have not found a resolution yet. I have posted on this forum, tried all suggestions and tried everything except a Hard Reset. I still cannot get my Desktop or Laptop to recognize my MDA via ActiveSync even though my Desktop and Laptop recognize my MDA. I have asked for 3rd party software to update my Outlook address book and calendar and have not found anything. I have even asked if there is software to update/change the MDA PIM.VOL file via a desktop or laptop. Still no luck. I have researched this out and checked all possible sites. NO LUCK. I still have not given up. I continue to look daily for a solution other than a Hard Reset.
So, you are not alone. There are many of us out there. ActiveSync is a very poor application. Maybe someday we will find something to use instead of AS. The only think that is missing in the AS is the last 'S'.
Hey friends,
I dont know if this reply is useful for you. I am so new to this forum. I am using a Motorola Mpx220, but gonna get my Cingular 8125 within a couple of days. Anyways, when I was syncing my Mpx, I had the same problem. The solution I found out was(after a long research), while the phone is still connected to the computer, go to Start -> Accessories -> Modem link. In that "USB" connection, make it active and then deactivate. As soon as you do this your active sync will detect the phone and it will sync smoothly.
I have no idea why is it happening like this nor I dont know if it works with MDA coz my Mpx220 is running on WM 2003 SE. I can only check WM 5 after I get my 8125. If this reply help you guys in anyways, please let me know.
Thanks mates.....

So there is no third party "phone manager" like for example Oxygen Phone Manager for Symbian phones ?
Contacts backup without outlook
Try " Jeyo Mobile Companion" . Google for it. It can save the contacts + call log as well as SMS on your comp. You can restore/ update the it any time It doesnt sync though. Just use it for back up purposes. Very hand. You still need to connect that phone to the comp. and AS to recognize your device.
Trust this helps
I assume that I can backup my PIM.VOL file on my 2Gb Storage Card. I have not had to reinstall the PIM.VOL file so I don't know if it really will work. However, I still would like to find an application that will allow me to update/change my Contacts and Calendar without using ActiveSync. Bottom line, why can't we find something that can do this without using AS since we are having problems on using AS? I have used Palms since day 1 and other things without as much problems as AS.

asctony,
AFAIK, you still need AS to connect the PPC to any PC ( I cud be wrong). What you can do is to set AS not to sync your contacts and others and use another 3p software to update / modify contatcts. The prog - Jeyo mobile companion does just that + back up your SMS too. Which is very crucial, in many cases as they cannot be backed up through the regular way.
Is this possible on the Wizard?? Unfortunately I have to get rid of my XDA Mini S but need to keep my contacts but can't think of any way to do it??
Please Help!!

damn
wellyou can. just go contact by contact and click menu, save to sim.
if you're upgrading to a different ppc, let me know, for that you can use a SIM Backup utility.
Unfortunately I may well be moving away from the Windows Mobile scene. I always used to use it because of work, keeping my diary up to date, contacts, etc... but started a new job and they use NOVELL GROUPWISE as their mail client so unfortunately my phone/PPC is half of what it used to be
Not quite sure what phone I want yet so just need to get my contacts onto my SIM card.
Then you better backup to Outlook (using ActiveSync).
Many phones now provide Outlook synchronization.
I agree, for better or worse Outlook is about the only way when moving to another platform, if in fact that platform will sync to Outlook. But even then it's not always clean, or comprehensive. Good luck!
Use sim manager
thank you very much
6.5
This software doesn't work on my Windows Mobile 6.5?
sim to phone
junior....thank you very much
Hi all,
Can I export, in some way, the SMS's and the contacts from WM5 to WM6? (but the sms are more important, because contacts can be rewritten in a few minutes).
I used SPB Backup for backing up data in WM5 but I don't know if it will restore it into WM6 environment.
Thank you all,
Eth
I just installed the T-Mobile test ROM for WM6 on my handset and tried to restore from smb backup and it 'kinda' worked.
Contacts in WM6 crashes unfortunately.
I'm switching back to the TM factory WM5 rom so I can get my contacts back before upgrading to WM6 again.
Contacts are much more important for me as this is my business phone!
Would be interested to hear if anyone knows a way to do this other than manually!

And What about sms/mms?
THank you,

Yes, ACTIVESYNC!
Isnt a good ideea to restore contact or something else from a backup when you upgrade the phone to a different version of OS.
Just sync your contacts in WM5, flash WM6 and sync again; you'll get all the contacts back.
For PIM backup-restore see this:
http://www.freewarepocketpc.net/ppc-download-pim-backup-v2-2.html
you can use a pc software,Jeyo Mobile Companion21.It can export all the contacts and sms to an XML file on your disk.and it can also import them to your Phone. The XML file can be import to any kinds of Windows Mobile systems.
I found PPCPIMBackup did the job very efficiently for me (didn't quite get MMS messages entirely right though)
http://handheld.softpedia.com/get/System-Utilities/Backup/PIM-Backup-35107.shtml
Thank you,
I tried Jeyo companion when I flashed from 2003 to WM5 and I was unable to restore sent messages, the content of the sent messages was blank.
Activesync? maybe, but i don't have outlook or other software of the ms office suite..
I check out PIM Backup, thank you all
