Hey Guys,
Just bought an orange m5000 of a friend, got a few bits already installed and a GPS reciever for Tomtom.
Just wondering where to start really, the screen seems a bit laggy, I was hoping I could upgrade the firmware somehow, but Im new to this and looking at all the posts is a bit confusing.
I'd rather it not have all the Orange muck that seems to be on it at the moment as I am an o2 user.
The only thing I have done to it so far is use buzz's universal sim unlock tool which works well.
If its any help I get a 1.30.90 version number show up when I start and a radio version of 0.0.0.
If you could direct me to must have apps, and the latest firmware, id be forever grateful.
You have a radio version of zero?
Have you actually got a signal on the phone?
Would you like to put the latest O2 ROM on your Uni instead of the Orange, or would you just like to get rid of the Orange customisations?
If you've still got Radio 0.00 you haven't read the unlocker thread.
Please upgrade to a new rom ASAP. 0.00 does work, but is not advisable as stable.
My top tips for the Universal:
-Update your ROM.
-Remove the phone dialer skin.
From there, just keep reading the forums! Many threads on optimisation already.

Ok just updated it to the lastest o2 ROM and its looking pretty tasty, just wondering where all these optimisation threads are.
Which is the best ROM to run it off in order to get the best performance ??

finding it hard to get good answers....so in anybodies opinion
the 02 xda mini s
is there any updates from the origonal 1.5.4.2 WWE? if so where can i get em from?
If no updates, maybe the 02 rom isnt the most up-to-date?? and it would be better to change to i-mate? or a q-tec?...if so...which would people recommend? and where could i find them? also...would they effect my being on 02 at all or would evrything stay the same and just the device will work better?!?
what do people think?

Hello jamie,
I would think that you should at least upgrade to the qtek9100 rom if u worry that u might not turn back to the O2 provided ROM. Or if you want even better performance, you can use the latest imate ROM. But i read in posts that you cannot downgrade as the loki wizard does not work in this rom.
Anyhow, i'm using an xda mini S and using the imate rom though.
Cheers
I was wondering about this as well. I've got an O2 XDA Mini S and it all seems to be working fine (so far). I don't use it for anything spectacular though phone, diary, notebook and I have a few other apps on it. I also run spb pocket plus and spb diary, again with no particular problems.
I know the old adage, "if it ain't broke, don't fix it", but are there any benefits from moving to the latest imate ROM, say?
tzehming,
You said you couldn't downgrade. Do you mean that once you put the latest imate ROM on, you can't ever go back to the original O2? Also, what's the deal with LokiWizard - is there something that needs to be done before the ROM can be upgraded?
(apologies for the dumb questions, I'm starting to get to know my way around the device)
Thanks,
John

Hello jko,
Yup u're right about having to use loki to unlock the rom. Search it in the forum and u'll find it. Just type loki.
After unlocking using the software, you can then install any rom for wizards, i.e. O2 mini xda s rom, imate rom or qtek 9100 rom. The one i'm using now is the latest one, which is the imate rom. I heard it cant be downgraded and we'll have to wait for an updated loki software to fix that. But the qtek 9100 rom can be downgraded again. I suggest u try the qtek rom as it makes the pda much faster. The O2 rom is really a turtle when opening the slider and closing it.
Hope this helps
Having read the advice above I'm going to unlock my device and flash it with the qtek 9100 ROM.
Once I've done that, what CAB files do I need to install in order to get O2 MMS and O2 GPRS working again?
Thanks,

Can't answer your question, but just a request to post back your experience once you're done. It would be appreciated.
John
well, you could again search the forum for gprs settings. u may not get the automatic setup anymore, thereby may have to do it manually. search for O2 gprs in the forum. as for mms settings, someone made a cab file, I can't remember which forum , but again, it can be searched. Try O2 mms.
hope this helps
I've got the mini S too...
First thing I did when I got it was to get rid of all the o2 crap on it... couldn't believe how slow it was even in basic mode!
I did the whole hard reset then soft reset when it says "customizing..."
This basically leaves you with a bare o2 wm5 rom without any of the customiztion installed. MMS won't work and either will GPRS.
To get these working you need to install Total Commander on your mini S and browse to the /extended_rom/ directory.
The cab files in this directory are the files installed when it says "customizing..." on a hard reset.
You can then selectively install which ones you would like to install.
There is a brief outline of what each one is on the htc wizard page on the wiki but I've made a better one I'm gonna stick on there.
You also need to input the GPRS settings and MMS settings manually and install a cab from the extended rom that creates the MMS folder in the messaging application.
After you've done all this you'll notice a considerable improvement over the o2 rom with all the crapola installed.
I've also used lokiwizard to unlock it all.
Not tried the qtek rom or the new i-mate one... as I don't use push-email or the like and haven't found any considerable bugs yet I don't need to.
I have found naggaly features which after installing the RegistryWizard, NullKbd and a few others... they seemed to be solved!
I recently updated my O2 mini S 1.5.4.... rom to the new imate one and i must give my approval for upgrading to this rom. Its faster, more stable, is much better on battery life for some reason.

Where can I get this. It does not appear to be in the Rom download area (or is it under a different name?)
its in this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/viewtopic.php?t=42638&postdays=0&postorder=asc&start=0
Well I successfully upgraded to the new i-mate ROM and it's MUCH faster. There's a lot less lag when sliding the keyboard in & out, and the general responsiveness of the device is considerably better.
I've managed to get GPRS working, and I've installed the MMS cab but I can't send or receive MMS's at the moment - it keeps telling me that it couldn't send the message. So I'm going to post elsewhere in this forum and check that I've got the correct MMS settings.
Overall though, I'd definately recommend upgrading to this ROM. Just remember to use Total Commander to take a backup of the O2 Extended ROM beforehand so that you've got the MMS cab-file available to install at a later date.
Excellent. Thanks for the feedback. I may well give it a go later today.

Code:
Just remember to use Total Commander to take a backup
Is this the one from Ghisler.com?
I downloaded this but cannot find any instructions or reference to backing up the Rom. Any idea where I can get the instructions (if there are any).
Code:
browse to the /extended_rom/ directory
I cannot see this in the Total Commander Directory list.
Any suggestions appreciated.
Just got my o2 mini s a couple of days ago and I am loving it soo far!!
However, I already encountered a couple of bugs - the system laggss REALLLI bad, like when the slider is pushed out, even when closing/running certain programs the device hangs. Also, I have seen a couple of times where the "phone" application will not load up. In all these cases I have had to do a soft reset on the device.
I am thinking of upgrading the rom - but this is my first pda, and i know nothing at all about fidgeting with the software. I don't want to mess up such an expensive phone so is it pretty easy to do?
w_2k20a:
I too want to be careful.
I have 2 phones, and my O2 Mini S is slow compared to my MDA Vario.
So I am going to try and run an update to replace the ROM on the O2 with the newer one on the Vario, and also get rid of the O2 add-ins which are what slow it down apparently.
I will try this first because I have read about so many problems with the latest I-mate one, and it is not easy to return to the original ROM if it does give problems (although it is possible it seems tricky) - I may the Imate one later if I need to.
The ROM for the Vario (along with others) is here:
ftp://[email protected]/Wizard/Roms/Tmobile/ - use password xda
Its the UK one.
But first I backed up my Mini ROM. I used awizard to do this. Read this thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/viewtopic.php?t=43399
I think that you will find that using the awizard (get it from this link)
http://forum.xda-developers.com/viewtopic.php?t=37386&postdays=0&postorder=asc&start=0
the backup part is easy. I have done that quite successfully.
Good Luck.
Hi, I am absolutely new to this, I am about to take delivery of an MDA Pro on T-Mobile, and i am wondering can i install say a jasjar or O2 rom image to get round some of the problems experienced with T-Mobiles roms?
I hope someone can help
Cheers in advance
Jonathan
yes, you can arbitrarily mix Windows Mobile core, Radio stack, and Extended ROM version.
Thank you and a further Question
By using the say Imate rom, will that eliminate the problems experienced with the t-mobile rom
Cheers and thank you
Jonathan
what problems are you having
i updated a magiacn that was ok and it totally fired it beyone repair
jesus, what did you do? You've got me a little worried now since i'm looking into cooking roms or trying some other device roms on my sx66. I was under the impression that it was relatively safe if your careful.
what did you do to fry it?
i simply downloaded a rom update off the phone porivders website, ran it and my lil magican was no more lol
this is the Universal forum. Of course if you burn a ROM for a different device then it will make poof.
Back to the question - what were your problems with the T-Mobile ROM? Were they T-Mobile issues or Microsoft issues? Or radio stack?
Where can you get T-Mobile roms from other than the ones on the WIKI (which is missing links). Do T-Mobile UK publish them, as I could not see any sensible links when I was logged in.
Just got my new M5000 after i accidentally threw the last one across the work car park.
I have just spent the last 45 mins browsing the site to work out what the latest roms and radios are so that i can get my nice virgin phone up to date.
However all i did was get very confused easily done im afraid.
Could someone please give me a difinitive answer on which updates i should run.
thanks in advance
Tim
First question is did you have any problems with your original M5000?
If not, dont fix something that is not broken!
If the original ROM worked ok for you.. stick with it.. I have...
Sensible searching in this forum will find you cures to most issues without upgrading your ROM...
If you still want to upgrade your ROM I'll leave the answer to 'which' & 'how' to others who have tried and tested it...
i had upgraded the radio to 1.6 i think but i see there is a 1.9 now but i cant find the exe to download.
Upgrade the radio, but don't bother with the extended rom.
Just remember to take note of the GPRS connection settings before you hard-reboot.
I had a replacement M5000 a few weeks ago i am now running the latest orange rom with radio 1.09.
It works great however one word of note i had to update the rom 3 times before the calender worked i assume the file must have corrupted during upload.
Can you point me in the right direction for the roms and radio
Last Night I made a clean install of the 2.26 rom on my wizard and I have to say, overall peformance is way better than the previous roms ive used. On my previous roms, the highest speed I got up to when surfing the net was 79 kbps, with the 2.26 rom, ive got true edge speed going up to 155kbps. Service never drops, and its much much faster. Although I excluded all t-mobile customizations since they are really no use at all. I get 4 bars almost everywhere I go. Streaming radio audio never drops. So, for me this has been the best rom that Ive used. Finally T-mobile has done something appreciative.
I agree, having had two issues with the 1.08 ROM. First, Voice Speed Dial would lose its list about every five days and Speed Dial's list would become simultaneously corrupted, some items being recoverable, some not. I got so tired of re-creating the list I just quit using VSD. MS Voice Command is on order. Second, the handset speaker volume was too low even when at max volume.
I won't be using VSD again, but so far (two days) SD has not become corrupted. I'll be satisfied when a week passes without an incident. The handset speaker volume is improved, and I can now hear conversations in noisy atmospheres without as much straining.
I've also noticed that it is more stable, and faster. Overclocking at 240 makes the MDA run like my old Ipaq running at 400 mhz., and menus zip in and out, with programs loading faster. Soft resets are also faster.
In the past I've resisted loading new ROM's, but this time it seemed like the right time, especially with the hope those two issues would be fixed. I'd say I'm happy so far.
...
I just don't understand. I was using the old, custom 2.08 or something ROM and was doing just fine (other than it disconnecting sometimes)... and after upgrading to the 2.26 ROM, I can barely get any signal anywhere at all. I used to have four bars at home, now I'm lucky to get two and usually get one. Sometimes, I get zero and have to wait before making calls. This NEVER happened before.
Is there something I'm supposed to reset after upgrading my ROM? This just doesn't make any sense.
I will never learn. Everything was fine, except of course MS Voice Command & Bluetooth, on the ROM version my Wizard shipped with earlier in the year.
Friday I installed the T-Mobile 2.26 update, then reinstalled Goodlink. Fine, then Smartskey & RegistryWizard. Looking good, then Goodlink errored out. On a soft-reset, the Wizard hung at a Windows splash screen. Hard-reset, reinstalled Goodlink and Smartskey. Seeming fine for a while, installed MS Voice Command (skipping past the message about Microsoft being an unknown developer). Still ok, then a day later errored out again. A soft reset hangs the Wizard again at the Windows splash screen.
I'll try it now with just Goodlink.
is there anybody know how to install the rom only without the extended rom, as i need to keep my extended rom as it is.
ROM 2.26 on Dutch T-mobile MDA Vario
Hi people,
I wanted to know is it possible to install the 2.26 ROM on my Vario.
If I'm not mistaken the 2.26 ROM is the US version of the MDA Vario.
I'm currently using the MDA Vario Dutch OS. But would like to have the English OS.
Do I need to CID unlock and/or SIM unlock my device before attempting to install this ROM?
Is there any risk in attempting to install it without CID/SIM unlocking it.
Thanks in advance.
Shah
you probably can. im not really sure, but if its still the same phone provider, i dont think you have to cid/sim unlock the phone.
the US version should be fine...its runnig on my UK Vario
if you are running a v1 ROM (no push function) its worth CID and SIM unlocking now..cos at the moment there is no tool to do it on a v2 rom.
As long as your phone is a T-mobile, you dont need to CID unlock before upgrade, but if you wanted to use a QTEK/Imate rom, then you would
good luck..the upgrade is worth it
Thanks people for the quick response.
I will consider upgrading to the new rom.
But one last question is the language issue a problem for a ROM upgrade? I just want to be postive before going through with this venture.
Because T-mobile Netherlands give a 2 year warranty on the Vario, but if I install the new ROM even if it is the T-mobile (other country) ROM
my warranty will void (really stupid T-mobile)
and if the update fails for any reason. I will need to do some extra work for nothing.
Shah.
Update on Uk T-mobile Vario.
I cant get it to work on my vario. Comes up with "wrong vendor" error.
Please post a link or info for UK version please.
Thanks .

You cannot install on a UK t-mobile wizard a USA t-mobile rom, even if they're both from t-mobile.
You must either:
- CID unlock your device if you're still using a 1.x rom (use lokiwiz 0.2b for the unlocking)
OR
- follow my tutorial to install the rom if you've got a 2.x rom (the tutorial is here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/viewtopic.php?t=56088 )
Bye
Thanks risidoro,
I will then try to unlock my 1.x ROM first and then update my ROM. I have interestingly followed other threads in this forum.
But I couldn't find any answer to the queston: When CID unlock in ROM 1.x is the device still unlocked when installing newer ROM 2.x?
In my case installing the US ROM 2.26 is it still unlocked??
EDIT: Reason is to find out if it might be possible to install or try other ROMs if I want to lateron.
Thanks in advance.

CID unlock is like death: you can have only one
[yes, CID unlock is sticky. Do it only once and it'll last forever, even if you go to 2.x]
Thanks Risidoro,
I'm gonna try the unlocking one of these days.
Just hope the US rom also corrects the errors in the ETEN dialer of PaulyA.
I think other language ROM aren't that compatible with the ETEN dialer.
Just love the phone dialer, only those stupid buttons (End button) that never becomes a Talk button.
Once again risidoro a lot of thanks.

What are u using to test your edge speeds? i'm on 2.24 and would like to know what i'm surfing at. I tried a couple sites but they were giving me resulst of 6kbps and crap like that which is not true.
I use SPB GPRS Monitor to check the data rate. It works great, but it's not a freebie.

However can someone please do an idiots guide list on how to remove the Orange Rom as it is awful - Orange wreck their phones by installing their own Rom.
I have experience of flashing Nokia phones with no problem so am not a novice.
I have spent days reading the posts on here and still cannot get Hard Spl installed...
I hope someone can help - also what is best rom available at the moment....
I see some people state that you cannot update the Orange rom!!! is this correct???
The tytn ii is running WM6 and my pc is running vista.
So please an idiots guide from start to finish for the orange rom removal would be great.......
