How can i detect a hot-spot?

How can i check if there is a Wireless Network in my area? I mean networks like Universitys have and coffee shops?
I know that at my house it connects automatically because i have no security whatsoever on my network, but it doesn't semm to work at commercial places or my university.

Take a tip and protect your wireless network at home. Up until recently mine was unprotected as I didnt think anyone lived close enough to me who was into computers. Was down late one night and just happened to see the wifi light on my router blinking. I knew no one else was up on the laptop or psp and I wasnt using my phone so I started to wonder what the hell was going on.
On investigating I found a computer as part of my workgroup called mikey_234234 or something similar. Seems there was someone close enough and they were kindly using my broadband and probably sharing my files ( although it was only a small folder with ppc stuff in it ).
I protected it straight away and the light stopped blinking and now the mikey computer has gone. Someone somewhere has lost their free ride.
Seriously protect your network my friend.

I always protect my Wireless Network(s).
Or via TKIP (password authentication), or simple MAC Adress Filtering.
Although I don't have a datalimit, it's fun to see unprotected networks and fun to use them.
Buying a wireless router is just like buying a car, it works plug-and-play, but you gotta lock it, otherwise people will get in

TyTN as a wireless router

Hi,
I was searching the forum but haven't found any useful info about that.
Do you know any WM5 software which can change TyTN into wireless router ?
Something like WModem, but using 3G and WiFi in the same time.
My idea is to come back home, plug the charger into my phone , run WRouter and have wireless internet connection everywhere in the flat from my mobile connected to 3G web'n'walk T-Mobile network.
What do you think ?

why? power consumtion on highest power setting is terrible, and battery is soon completelly depleted, there is also neecesary to left charger in phone...
if you need wifi router (w/ NAT, firewall, VPN...) you can buy inexpensive router for few bucks and it is more compatible, more stable, more usefull, more secure, far better manageable etc...

U can use bluetooth on the tytn as a router with a reg hack u can connect more then one computer, not the same range and speed but it is possible.

yeah but then everybode have to have bluetooth in their notebooks. we have 3 laptops in the flat and nobody has bluetooth in it. but what then ? everybody are connecting using dial-up, like thorugh normal usb cable, but instead of it, thorugh bluetooth ?
now we have like that - I am commin back home, connect tytn to my laptop, dial-up, and wireless in my laptop is ad-hoc configured, so everybody are connecting to my machine, and modem (tytn) is shared. if tytn has wireless, I thought, that I don't have to leave my laptop all the time turned on. It could be great to leave connected to charger and that's all. All the internet and local home network could be through that. If there was a linux distribution for this phone I am pretty sure this option would be one of main in netwokr configuration...
anyway thx. just wanted to know if there is any piece of soft for that...

battery problem. in this configuration I give our tytn 1 hour working on wifi and 3g used together in the same time...
anyway at home you have charger, in a car aswell, you can buy few batteries on ebay and problem resolved heh

You could tether your Tytn to your laptop using either a usb cable or bluetooth, then setup an adhoc network through your laptops wifi connection. All you need to do then is do internet connection sharing between your bluetooth DUN connection and your wifi card and you should be in business to let your flat mates connect to your adhoc, which essentially turns your laptop into a router. Let me know if that helps or if you have any further questions.
I've done this myself with my mates and it works flawlessly.

Yea, I searched around a while on this way back but there is no solution that I could find.
Your best bet is to either just use PAN bluetooth, or tether just one computer over bluetooth and share your connection via wifi. It's super easy on a mac, not sure about windows.

ehehe...NO, MATE.... There's NO adsl connection where I live... So I can just use my tytn as a HSDPA modem and I use to share his connection on my PC, BUT I'm not able to share it throug wifi on my wii...
I really hope a coder could solve this... even if I'm not sure it's possible.

yeah, cheers pal, I've already written about that above. I have this kind of network at my home frome the begninnig of using tytn. What I want is to stop using my laprop as a router, my tytn has everything to be a router itself, it needs just a piece of software. This thread is only about piece of software.

Wireless Encryption

Hello guys,
I want to see how secure my wireless network is for someone who is using a PPC, so I have been searching for any software that will allow me to crack my encryption but so far I have not managed to find anything. I have found a few software that crack encryptions both on Windows and Linux, but none on Windows Mobile.
Any of you know any software?

What a bizarre request If you've got a wireless network, set the router encryption to the strongest setting your PC's/PPC's will support and use the cracking tools on a Windows PC to test it. If you've got security and MAC filtering on the router, you're doing about the best you can anyway.
Trying to crack wireless security on a PPC is gonna be slow as - the Hermes only has a 400MHz processor, so it'll probably take four or five times (or more) longer to crack the security as it would if you did it on a desktop PC. The only software I know of that might work is MiniStumbler - kinda like the baby brother of NetStumbler, from http://www.netstumbler.org
My advice is this , give it up as a bad job, or make sure your PPC is permanently on charge coz the battery life will be crap with the WiFi on and packet capture/cracking tools running

Download the backtrack ISO LiveCD and run it on a laptop or PC which has a supported wireless device. That LiveCD comes with a suite of wifi cracking apps which you can use to penetration test your wireless network if you thusly desire.
Doesn't work with many Acer laptops though due to something stupid with the Acer motherboard design (and guess what laptop I have! haha)

How to make my windows mobile serve as a repeater?

After finding the amazing WMWifiRouter I keep on searching for a program to help me extand the wifi range in my house, since some rooms i have no wifi in range.
I thought to put the mobile i got (Touch Diamond) in the middle where it can reach my home network, and connect to my home network through it.
In one sentence: make it a wifi repeater..
Any good suggestions?

UMMM no probably not. What you are talking about is mimo and there is no need for it in general. you could use wmwifirouter as you gateway to the internet and use your home router to connect other computers. YOu would have a heating problem and power problem on your phone tho trying to boost the signal to connect. Tho you could move the router closer to the senter useing your phone to provide the internet connection and then you could put it where ever you can get the best coverage in the house. There are instructions on there website on how to do this even using DHCP from the phone thru the router. So maybe this way.

I would also be very interested in this capability, I was in a hotel ounce where I had good wifi in bathroom but not at the desk. So when great wifi is just barely out of range this would be a great utility.

WiFi client detection software?

I have someone leeching off my Wifi net, who seems to be able to 'break-in' no matter how i secure the WiFi net.
Anyone know of any free Windows Mobile software that will show signal strength of Wifi CLIENTS nearby. Not Access Points, but CLIENTs.

If you got an "leecher" on your network I would recommend you to start your search on your router.
You didn't provide any specs, how did you find out that someone is on your network?
Next question, have you changed both, router pass and wlan key?
Are u using weak encryption (wep)?
Whats about your mac-filter?active?
I would guess you've got an dhcp server on your network/router... go there and check the dhcp releases. Any suspicious entrys? You should know all the devices listed there. If you have found a IP you don't know, ping it and check if its alive (those packages can be ignored by the host), try to access it via smb, you could also try a demo of languard and try to read out details like os, user, owner...
I'm almost shure you can't use your wm device to locate a client of a network, unless you can switch your wlancard to ap-mode and he connects to you ^^

Anyway, it's a CLIENT signal strengh program that I'm trying to find.

Rogue clients are malicious wireless client devices that either try to gain illegitimate access to your WLAN or try to disrupt normal wireless service by launching attacks. There are numerous ready-to-launch wireless attack tools freely available on the net. Many of them are open sourced and work pretty well with most Wireless client cards. This turns any curious mind to professional hacker in minutes. Many do it simply for the pleasure of being able to disturb someone remotely. All these developments force WLAN administrators to give a second look at any wireless client that is misbehaving.

Sorry, I don't think that you can trace him with your mobile. as long as hes not connected to your mobilephones wireless network (wich requires your mobile wlan device to switch to ap-mode).

Please tell us, why do you think somebody is on your network, how did you find out... whats the "evidence" for you that there is somebody.

I hope you know that its just a matter of minutes to break a wep key. GPUs are used to decode it, which is damn fast!
So please provide more specs about your network.

1: Use WPA instead of WEP.
WEP is crackable in a matter of seconds.
2: Assign access control/MAC filtering
3: Use your network in ad-hoc mode

The person in question might change his MAC to yours and create collisions anyways

Can you be sure that he has really associated with your router. I have noticed some client/router combinations "apparently" associate but all traffic is blocked because they did not provide the right key.
As others say - use WPA WPA2 and use a strong (non dictionary) passphrase
get a computer that can run airodump or something similar.
run airodump with it set to the channel of you router - not in hopping mode as you will miss lots of packets.
Airodump will tell you the strength of the signal from his computer so if you have this on a laptop you can move around and possibly can an idea roughly where he is

I didn't list the router config simply becuase I am confident it's pretty secure:
Router is a new Belkin N1
- 63 random char password from grc.com/passwords
- SSID is "netgear" even though its a Belkin : intention to mislead for access URL.
- WPA2-PSK AES encryption
- SSID not broadcasting
I didn't bother with MAC filtering, as I understand a good 'hacker' can spoof it : If this guy can get through WPA2 I would say he can probably MAC spoof.
My 'evidence', is that up to 3 unkown computers turn up on the 'Clients List', around 4 hours after I change the SSID/password : Each time.
I have 2 laptops, so I will try Airodump or maybe Backtrack (suggested elswhere) on these as a 'direction finder' based on signal strength.
Hmmm...I did read somewhere you can set a Kaiser to be an access point...
