I can't seem to figure out how to reassign the Internet Explorer button (next to the space bar) to open Opera. Likewise, it defaults to an O2 page in its current state.
i'm not sure about your device, but on my qtec9090 there's an IE icon on a button on the hardware keypad almost next to the spacebar. And by default it was linked to a webpage from the phonecompany. Looks very familar to your question.
On my qtec9090 this button is defined via the buttons-settings and it's button number 9.
Maybe this helpes?
Just read the WiKi. It is in there: http://wiki.xda-developers.com/index.php?pagename=Universal_Registry
Thanks. I can now open to the page of choice, however it's still defaulting to PIE. How can I map to launch Opera? Anyone? Thanks.

Nah, the IE button doesn't show up.
I did it, and as far as I remember all I did was change the PIE homepage to \Program Files\Opera\Opera.exe.
Now, IE will open, but opera will the open. Its the best soution available at the moment.

There is no way as of now to map the IE button to any application. The only thing we can do as of now is change PIE home page with the WiKi Instructions.

Read my post above  . You can use it to open Opera!
...if you change, for button 2, with total commander the link inside
\windows\appsbuttons]Internet Explorer.lnk
to (or similar place):
23#"\programfiles\opera\opera.exe"
it worked for me...

I have noticed that the link/app behind the IE button on the iMate JASJAR has embedded the www.clubimate.com link and every time you click the button it tries to open up that site. I want to change that so that it acts like the IE icon does on the start menu so that the web page I have up does not get overwritten. The site is not the home page defined in IE because I have already changed that. I am guessing that they have it as a parameter passed on the command line in the button. The button applet does not even have that button as one that can be touched. Anyone know what part of the registry to look at?
Thanks
Joseph
Get a registry editor.
Go to - HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Hardware\OEM\Keybd
Change the string called PieHomePage to the website address of your choice.
rilot, is there anyway to make the button NOT go to any website? I just want it to switch me back to PIE without changing the page I was browsing.
For example, I'm looking at a web page, and decide to go check my mail by hitting the messaging button - then viewing my mail. Then, when I press the Internet Explorer button I just want to go back to the same spot I left in the browser, not launch any page at all. Any thoughts?
Thanks!
Just edit the dword so that it is blank.
Works fine, just tested it.
For the MDA Pro from T-Mobile (Germany) the registry key is different:
\HKLM\software\HTC\PIEPlug\home
internet key
how to disable the key at all, or better to make it a "space" key?
It's just next to "space" in my T-Mobile MDA pro and I can't stand it goes on the net each time I press it by chance typing!!!
thks
Does anyone know how to turn off the stupid "You are about to go online" message everytime u press the button on the MDA?

How do you keep the universal from going to the imate website when you press the internet explorer button on the keypad :?:
I know on my magician I just open IE explorer. Navigate to the page I want as my homepage and then open tools --> options then select the use current option.
Don't know if it is the same on the Universal.

No need to touch the registry for this one. Just do as dgaust says above.

Actually the reference isn't just for opening IE, but specifically using the IE key on the keyboard. The "use current" method works fine when opening IE from the start menu but the keyboard button is registry coded to go to imate (or other site depending on the device branding.)
To change that, the registry hack is necessary.
Ah - I hadn't spotted the subtle difference. I stand corrected.

Or blank out the home page addy in that string so PIE will either launch and go to your homepage if PIE is not already running, or it will just switch to your current PIE session when the button is pressed if one is already running.
it works fine thanks
Is there a solution to map the OK button to an app which closes programs?
AE Button Plus does not allow to map the OK button.
It does, you select 'File' then 'Add button'. Press the OK button and then 'Add key' and it will be added to the list where you can assign it to an action.

I beleive pqzii is a good program to map the keys, but unless someone posts a manual as to how to use it, this program will render useless to newbies. Of course, those who are very knowledgable in programming will be the only ones benefiting from the hard work of the writer of this program.
Bottom line, how to use this program? Can someone who knows how to use it be kind enough to give us, newbies, some help?
Personally, I am using the X button program and it is great. I like to map the bottom OK button to become the X button to close programs from running in the background.
Thanks in advance to those who are willing to help.
My experience is :
1. Go to the install folder of PQzII with file explorer (picture 1)
2. Choose PQzII setup.exe (picture 2)
3. Tick the "Use OK button(Task Close/All)" checkbox under Windows option (picture 3)
4. Untick the " Use this function" checkbox under Icon option (picture 4)
5. Create a shortcut to Windows/Startup folder (picture 5)
HI blcc:
Thanks for the above. But the OK buttin still does not close the program - as I click it, it seems to have closed it but I looked at the Memory to find out the programs running - the one tat supposed to have been closed is still there.
BTW - One more newbie question about step 5 - how do your create a short cut to the Windos\StartUp?
Thanks again.

I can really close the program with OK button after apply the setting. For creating a shortcut, I use resco file explorer, tap and hold at the item and a pop up menu will appear. Choose "cut", and go to the statup folder, tap and hold again and choose "paste shortcut". That is.
Hope you understand my poor English.

PQzII was a bit buggy for me.
is there a way to have exceptions to closing the programs?eg:i like messaging and contacts to always be running in the background so if i press the ok hardware button it only minimizes messaging and contacts while really closing the other applications.

I made this mistake as well, it's because you've missed the most important part.
1. HKLM\Software\SonyEricsson\PanelManager\ApplicationName
2. e.g. Change it to "\..\Windows\Pie.exe"
"\..\"
You must put that at the start. I did my comm manager and has to do:
"\..\Windows\CommManagerLink.exe"
Thanks for finding this to the OP as well, been looking to get this changed for a while!
i installed one of the roms that do not have panel manager installed. this trick doesnt seem to work on the rom
im confused
cansomeone pls explain what u can achieve by changing this buttoins function other than losing acces to the panel function :S or does this simply mean u can save cpu usage
pls reply with some insight
thnx
Uh... but if you assign your panel button to something else.... then how you gonna access the panels still?
This is incase you dont use the panels.
Like me... i have had the original rom, and 2 roms here on this forum (custom)
And with every rom i had the same thing.
Having tf3d and panels will crash my phone (when i use e.g. google panel and then hit the x for panel change, then i often need to remove battery and place it again)
i rather have the tf3d then panels if i have to choose.
so thats why i use the X for a different app.
AE Button Plus
Or you could use 'AE Button Plus' it works for me flawlessly. I can assign the Panel Button to just about anything I choose.
how did you asign something to the AE button?
how do i reassign another button to run panel manager? I tried to execute /Program Files/Panel Manager/PanelManager.exe but that does not bring up the panel manager

In AE Button Plus main screen, select FILE menu and choose ADD BUTTON and the dialog box that pops up is waiting for you to press a hardware button...
Press the X-PANEL button (which will probably launch panel manager if it's installed, no matter close that down) it will then allow you to press in the dialog box 'ADD KEY' and also shows you the Key code...
The key code will be next to the newly created button in the list for you to assign to whateve you like.

Yeah, assign Quickmenu.exe to the panel button and you get a "startmenu" button. Search for Quickmenu 2.7 around the forum....
doesnt work
I followed your directions and can't get the x-panel button to run quickmenu. It still runs the panel manager. There's something else that needs to be done, and I haven't' a clue what that is.
At least I was able to load the cab file that makes panels work on the touch HD. So when I eventually get the x-panel button reassigned, I can still access panels (which I infrequently do as it is). I have yet to see the value of panels. I like running things in the background concurrently, i.e. listening to streaming radio or mp3, txt'ing, using GPS, or exploring on the web. Panel switching seems to halt other tasks.
Kinda works
Finally got quickmenu to work with the x-panel key. Another important tidbit of info is that quickmenu must already be running for the x-button to invoke it. Otherwise it loads panelmanager.
Another bit of info, as soon as you run panel for the first time (in programs, the touch HD cab adds it on install), the behavior reverts back to the x-panel key invoking panelmanager and not quickmenu. I checked, quickmenu is still running. Figure that one out. Very confusing.
i installed panel as a seperate cab, i dont have the panel manager in my programs and i cant seem to invoke it any other way besides pressing the hardware button

Hi. I have recently got a Touch 2. On the tabs along the bottom of the screen, the fifth tab from the left is the one featuring a 'globe' icon. Tapping it opens the 'Opera' browser. I prefer using Internet Explorer and (at the moment) have to open that by using the 'Start' menu. Is there a way of making IE the default browser so that it starts when the 'globe' tab is tapped? I imagine this requires dumping of 'Opera' and making tapping of the 'globe' icon leading to IE. HTC gave me a solution, then, when that didn't work, said, 'It can't be done.' Any ideas? Cheers
I know exactly what you need...
1. Find application called M2DC on this forum.
2. Install it.
3. Run it. There are some tabs at the bottom of the screen.
4. Find tab "Internet" and click on it.
5. Then change the path to the Internet Explorer in the Windows folder.
6. That's it. You should be able to use globe icon to run IE.
(I am not sure, but you maybe need to softreset the phone after changing that.)
Hi, Mekki99.
I did that and it works, well almost. IE starts from the tab on the 'Today' screen, but then says 'Cannot find 'hxxp:///home'. Make sure the path or Internet address is correct.' If I advance to the relevant menu to go to the 'Home' page, it finds the one i have lodged as the Home Page. Where to from here? Cheers.
why do you wanna surf the net with internet explorer and not opera mini 5, which is super fast compared to the old opera or internet explorer?
Quite simply, I prefer IE. Thanks.
Hello, my solution for this problem:
In TotalCommander go into registry folder (\\Plugins\registry)and go to \HKLM\SOFTWARE\HTC\Manila2D\InternetWidget\
1.Changing browser- open file (WebBrowserType) and change value from 1 to 2.
2.Changing URL- open folder Customized and find file (BannerUrl) and change value to your favorite homepage.
3.Restart
Hi. Thanks for your solution.
Can you help me a bit further?
What is TotalCommander?
How do I get to the quoted registry folder?
Cheers
Hi, Ondrej.
Don't worry, I have followed your directions using a bit of lateral thinking and solved that issue. Thanks heaps.
Now can you turn your mind to the problem I relate in thread 730375 (On the 'Start' menu, there are a number of icons / applications. They all start with one tap. Except 'Internet Explorer'. The first tap on the IE icon, takes you back to the 'Today' screen, with 'Internet Explorer' briefly being able to be seen in place of 'Start', then the words disappear. However, the programme does not run. On tapping 'Start', again, and then tapping once on the 'IE' icon (again), it runs. This happens every time I want to use IE. Why? HTC Contact Centre suggested I place IE on the 'Programs' page and try that. It was the same. They have failed to respond to my response. Is there a remedy? The same behaviour occurs when opening from the 'Programs' tab on the 'Today' screen, or from the 'Browser' tab on the 'Today' screen'.)
Cheers. Dave
Hi, TotalCommander is a file manager program for windows. You have to download and install a pocket pc version. Because Iam new here, I cant write you url. Please find this program on internet. (Download cab for arm/pxa/xscale).
Start a TotalCommander and go into root (\) You will see a \\Plugins folder.

Thanks. See my last post before yours. I have fixed that issue, but want to resolve the last one! Any help appreciated. Cheers.
I'm working on it.
Thanks, Ondrej.

Here with me, I don't want to use IE, I prefer to use Opera. The HTC im using came with Opera Mobile 9.5 and is the browser that opens when i click on the globe on one of the tabs of M2D. I downloaded mobile opera 10 for windows touch phones thinking that it will update the current opera browser, and to my dissatisfaction - it did not. Opera Mobile 10 appears on my program list.
How do I make it the browser that opens when i click on the globe? Should I follow the instructions provided in this thread? I don't want to mess up my registry and have irreversible issues.

Is this the same procedure if I would like to change it to any browser, say Opera Mobile 10? The person who started this thread wrote he got problems after he did this operation.
