So, how did you do it in the mini s?
I would guess, cutting the +5V wire from USB would help. If you don't want to cut your cable, buy an USB extension cord an cut off pin 1 from the female plug or mask it with tape.

Registry
HKLM\Drivers\BuiltIn\usbfndrv
EnableUsbCharging set 1 to 0
i use ist as umts modem on my laptop when i using the train,
und the usb loading suck down my laptop very fast
so you have to disable, restart, then enable, and restart?
Charging without Sync
I would like to do the opposite.
i.e. Charge but not sync.
Anyone know whether it is possible to add a switch to allow a sync when required only?
My phone is plugged in all the time at work however active sync keeps switching on the device. i just what to sync at the end of the day.
Just disable usb in File->Connection Settings

Disable activesync (options --> disable USB loading). It will show in grey color in the system tray.
Re: Charging without Sync
I am very interested in charging the battery sometimes without sync, how can I do that ?
You said

"
but where do you do that ?? there is not such options in ActiveSync on the PocketPC.
ActiveSync on the desktop
But if I disable USB charging on my Hermes, would it still charge with the normal charger??
Thanks
Alex
Anyone tried doing either Regedit mod or cutting pin 1?
I can't find: Registry "HKLM\Drivers\BuiltIn\usbfndrv" on my device.
Cutting pin 1 does not work, in fact PC can't detect PPC when pin 1's cut.

I can't find in my TyTN the registry key "usbfndrv"
Still can't get it to work.
Any progress?
We have only recently started developing for the Hermes and we need to stop it charging while we are communicating with it over USB.
It appears you have to supply 5V before you can communicate over USB (ActiveSync). This rules out cutting the cable.
The registry hack sounds ideal but there doesn't appear to be such an entry on our device.
It appears to stop charging when the device is turned off so we should be able to enable and disable charging with software.
Did anyone have any more suggestions?
You can try to create the registry key and see if it works.

Is there any way to connect the Universal Directly to a mobile hard drive?.
to be more precise, to this one:
http://www.lacie.com/products/product.htm?pid=10669
Not Directly NO. The Universal does not have the USB Host hardware required to attach this kind of thing.
Take a look at this...

Universal has WIFI so youd be better off just mapping a network drive or something rather than using bluetooth which is very slow.

That would be a PC Its certainly possible that somebody could make a card for the SDIO slot that would support USB Hosting but I am not aware of one.
Better wait for cheaper 4 gigabytes sd cards
Hi jimcl,
You have the same idea as me! I was thinking of hooking up my external 60GB HDD to my Exec using just a normal camera USB cable. As you have thought, it didn't work. Wouldn't it be great if things just works the way we wanna them to be?
I assume that if it works, the battery on your Exec will dry up very quickly as the HDD draws its power from it.
Anyway, if you find anything that allows you to do that, please post it out here and share it with everyone!
Cheers!
Regards,
Johnnie
Wifi would be much better, and is already available, but they are not designed for mobile use, mains supply required.
SDIO to USB is, I think is in the pipeline, but prehaps a better solution would be SDIO to Wired Ethernet, more likely to find this for PDA's with no Wifi, and USB/Ethernet hard drives are available now. Although ethernet drives still require mains supply but USB ones would suck power to quick from the host
I think we will see host controllers as standard in future PDAs.
I know the 5Gb is not particulary good on the Toshiba device, but I doubt it will be long before the capacity increases.
I must admit, SD/MMC cards are a better way to go and I think 8gb is in the pipeline now and prices will drop over time.
of course I'll share the solution... in case I find it!
I more or less agree with all your comments... but sometimes we just want to work with the things we have, ... I already have a mobile hard drive. That's all.
Apart from 4GB SD cards - and future 8GB - maybe we could find a solution in the WIFI way, but anyways 8GB SD card sounds great - maybe not its price..
If your looking for a solution for home or car try the asus WL-HDD wireless access point / hard drive
I picked one up off ebay for 50ukp with a 60 gig drive in it,
Also lets you copy stuff from other usb devices to the hard drive (without a pc) or share other usb devices over the wireless (with new firmware from asus).
http://reviews.cnet.com/Asus_WL_HDD_2_5/4505-3382_7-31080278-2.html?tag=nav
Power wise it needs 5v @ 2 amps
Being linux based there is also some hacked firmware that will let you use other usb devices or turn it into a webserver and other things..
http://wl500g.info/
currently selling in the uk without drive for around 36ukp (scan)

Yes, you can connect the Universal to the hard disk directly WITHOUT going through a router/access point using Wi-Drive, here:-
http://www.edslab.com/products.htm
Spoken to the developer 2 days back and was told that it'll be ready this coming August. It'll be released with a 30GB hard disk as this will be more affordable to the public. If you need higher capacity hard disk you'll need to install it yourself.

anyone? thoughts? comments/questions...
No, there is no option on how to disconect from activesync.
Are you sure that synchronisation process is finished before you pull the plug ?
Have you tried the latest activesync from MS ? Older versions might have problems with WM5.
Try to close Active sync (on your phone) after you unplug or before you replug the usb.
A bit off subject but has anyone else noticed strange Window behaviour on their PC when your phone is connected. I've had this really strange Window focus issue, where open applications loose their focus, as if I was using alt+tab to cycle through them. I was pulling my hair out (as it made the PC completely unusable) trying to work out what it was when I noticed that it only happened when I was using active sync.
The next time I got the problem I turned off my phone (still leaving it connected) and everything returned to normal????
Weird!
I'm using active sync 4.1
Code:
more often than not, i need to soft-reset wizard after disconnecting from pc
I get the same problem with both my XDA mini s and my MDA Vario now I've upgraded to Activesync 4.1.
I never had the problems with my previous phone (an Orange SPV M2000 - WM2003 and Activesync 4.0). So I guess its a WM2005 issue.
thanks all

I think thats the radio interfering with your CRT monitor. This is normal interference. You can experiment with it by bringing the phone close to the monitor and moving it far away.
But then again... :?:

Is this guy for real?
By losing focus I don't mean going fuzzy I mean it's like I switched to another application using alt+tab.

One thing I caught was I enabled the modem and didn't specifically deactivate it. When I pluged the sync in, it kept adding "Generic Serial". Didn't dawn on me until a little bit later. I deactivated it and then the "Generic RNDIS" showed when I plugged it in and then the sync worked. Dunno if that is your issue, but I read this before realizing my mistake.

to the x1 so that we can connect to the internet using LAN if there are no wifi on that area or maybe some of our friends here can create a river for this to happen??
I wouldn't have thought so because the USB socket on the X1 won't supply enough juice to make it work. The ethernet dongle is also a peripheral meaning you need to plug it into a USB Host. AFAIK, the X1 isn't a USB Host.
If your computer is connected to the internet and you connect it through active sync and have "use advanced network functionality" checked then i think the internet works for the x1 - so you wouldnt need any of this
Thanks zenithUK.. I only wonder if that is possible...
wat comeraxi said
+ with that done , u also get charging , much better than wat u mention
x1 don't support usbHost so it can't init a connection to any usb device
it can only be connected to by a computer
but once the connection is init'd the x1 can use the same network
as the computer have as long as it's connected to activesync
same if bluetooth is used to sync rather then usb

Yes but what i'm just saying is if you don't have a computer and you want to use LAN to use the internet. But thanks for the share of information that could give all the readers here more knowledge..
maybe you should try a wireless access point, plug the lan to the access point and then connect x1 by using wifi

Are you using stock firmware or custom one?
It doesn't work because you bought a micro B to usb A cable but you need a micro A (with 4 right angles) to usb A like this :
.
I know that because I bought the same type of cable than yours and it's not working .
@mavasilisk: stock firmware
@Starman: i am not sure it would fit. cable that was in package when i bought tablet was with this type of connector that i have now.
Yes and that is for connecting the device to a computer.
What you need is called an OTG cable and that looks exactly as starman said.
The Nokia ca-157 looks similar to the cable you bought but is has the right "end".
Well, today i have tested this nokia ca157cabel. Doesn't work.
Sent using Tapatalk 2
Then either your usbport is broken, or the device you want to connect tells that it needs more then 100mA.
When i connect my tablet with my computer, file transfering works i both way, computer recognize it normaly. Is there any other way to se if usb is broken???
Sent from my A70S using Tapatalk 2
No, then your stick needs more ( or at least tells the archos ) more then 100mA.
Did you try a powered Hub?

Powered hub is something that i was planing to do next. Usb stick is not so important because there are always sd-cards, but i want to buy one of those keyboard with leather case from e-bay and i am not sure if that will work.

Try the hub, if that works, then it is the powerconsumption of the stick and the keyboard is working.
Or try UrukDroid, as this raises the output and is able to use most sticks.

ok, i have UrukDroid & i have nokia cable ca157 and it is still does not working.
problem is that every powered hub that i find is HUUUGE and have 5-10 usb ports, and i don't need that much.
EDIT
i did it. i made my own "usb powered hub". ok it is far from it but actualy it works.
in micro usb i connected pins 5 and 4
only thing diferent, is that i put external power on vcc. and.....it works.
nokia ca157 DOESN'T works so don't use it. waste of money
ok i seem to be the only person having this problem, im not sure if its my computer (i have never used the usb 3.0 on it before), the phone or the cable (brand new).
When i connect my phone via the usb 3.0 i get a notification message popup on my computer tell me that the device can perform faster if plugged into a super speed usb 3.0 port.
Problem is i have tried all of the usb 3.0 ports and still the same message, i checked in device manager and it says it is plugged into a usb 2.0 port which it isn't and its only charging at 98ma.
How do i get the usb 3.0 to work?

Can you give further details on what you had to do to resolve. I am experiencing this issue and I have tried.....EVERYTHING!!!
I have a Windows 8.1 machine 64-bit, and have USB3 plugged from the motherboard. I have a USB3 pen drive which operates at superspeed without issue (so I know the USB hub, etc is in good shape). I also have a USB 3 card which is a PCI express and have tried connecting this to a Windows 7 64-bit machine and I receive the same results. I have 2 cables and both give the same result. So I am stuck.
On both machines it reports that the device can operate quicker which would suggest Windows knows that this is a USB 3 device. Any ideas how to obtain the USB 3 option on the phone?
