I am having trouble getting round the IT policy at my work.
I want to install ActiveSync and the other applications that came with my MDA Compact (T-Mobile UK). However our drive mappings are such that I cannot access the C:\ drive and the installation disc does not offer the option of installing to a different drive (I am able to use a local partition mapped as D:\ drive and wish to install to there).
Does anyone know of a way of installing the accompanying software to a non-default drive? i.e. is this a setting or registry entry I can edit?
Think I am out of luck but you don't know unless you try!
Hello,
Only active sync comes with the disk. You can get active sync from Microsoft' website and install it without the disk..

Hi All,
Newbie here so please be nice
I have only had my XDA Mini for a few weeks now and have just tried to copy files from the PC straight to the storage card via Activesync. I open Activesync and click on 'File' then 'Explore'. The explorer window opens but I get this message...
"Critical communications services have failed to start. Try resetting the mobile device, and then connect again."
I have reset the mini and rebooted my PC many times but it has made no difference. What does it mean and how do I fix this problem?
I believe this is an issue with the built in XP firewall... Install another firewall, disable the built-in one and try again.
Hi,
I have the problem as well from time to time. As an alternative I found out, that you can place files in \My document\<Device name>_Syncronised Files (or similar, sorry I use the german version). If you acitivate ActiveSync feature of syncing files, these files will be transfered to the device. You cannot access the memory card this way but at least you can transfer files even if the 'Explore' funtion is not working.

marco
Thanks Guys.
Marco, I have been downloading via My Documents without any problems. The problem here is that I am limited to the memory on my device. I need to download straight to the Storage Card as the files are larger then the internal memory.
Sunoke, ill try the Firewall thing and see how I go.
i've tried to install AIM... and a webcam program.. both of which install through active sync.. however everytime I try I get the following message on my phone...
"Installation of (whatever).CAB was unsuccessful." and that's about all I get.
Also whenever I connect the phone to my PC is says it's unable to successfully syncronize and asks me to reconnect the device.
MS's support site has been less than helpful... any help you all can give would be greatly appriciated....
Installation problems.....
I am having the same problem too.
Even after a hard reset when I try and install Sprite Backup & Agenda Fusion I keep getting the install error: 'cannot be installed, try another location'
It's driving me up the wall! I would have thought after a hard reset this wouldn't be an issue. I'm now the proud owner of an MDA Pro (Universal) that I can't use because the software I want to install won't install.
Can anyone help me please?
Hi,
Couple of things you might consider / try: -
Establish an activesync connection, then use the "explore" button, navigate to your staorage card, and manually copying the .cab file from your pc to the storage card.
Then on the treo go to file explorer, storage card, and run the cab from the card.
The other thing is to check that you're using activesync 4.1 or later - updates are a free download from MS.
Hope this helps
Angus
Thank you for your suggestions.
Unfortunately i've already tried copying the CAB files straight to the device and launching them produces exactly the same result.
I'm also already using Activesync 4.2 latest version.
Is there anything else I can try?
judging from your sig, you're using a pretty old rom version... I would definitly upgrade it and then give it another go...
Hello,
When I connect Qtek 9100 to my Windows box via USB it's detected as "Generic RNDIS" devices and asks to install drivers for it. I don't have a disk and was unable to find it on Internet or in this group. Anybody has a solution for this?
Install ActiveSync 4.0 or later.
Or get wm5torage which is a small program that allows you to use your phone as a usb hard drive using a standard USB cable.
I'm using an older version, but a new version appears to have been posted here -
http://forum.xda-developers.com/viewtopic.php?t=56721
This gives access to the MiniSD card, but not the main storage (as far as I can tell). It also doesn't give you access to the SMS messages (which are hold to get) or the contacts (which "require" Outlook, *sigh*)
Hope that helps
Hello.
I seem to have made a "cleanup" of the Universal file in main storage (by only removing some today items not needed, and I think I removed a file inside WMDRM folder or something.
Anyway, since that day for some reason, my Universal connects to Activesync through USB but it Doesn't synchronize. I get a message on Activesync stating that sync cannot be made.
Also, I cannot install cab files moved Directly to my device. e.g. I have a file on storage card, run is, and get an "unsuccessful" message directly.
From the beginning, I couldn't uninstall any applications (with the 1.90.94 Aku3 rom...) and I could only do it from Activesync Install/Uninstall. Although the files apear in windows/installs (or something) folder, they are not shown on the device's add/remove programs function.
I don't care about uninstalling, but Installing and using Activesync is top priority. Any clues on how to solve it without a Hard Reset?
Thanks...

I have the same problem too, need help!! anyone knows how to fix this?thanks for any help.
Have you tried disabling file conversion?
Go to Activesync on PC then click Tools -> Advanced Tools -> Edit File Conversion Settings and uncleck the tick box.
If you are trying to copy files from the memory card then the best way is to put the device in Disk Drive mode. Connect device then click Start->Settings->Connection tab->USBtoPC->Disk Drive
I encountered this the other day, I think you can only copy files from the SD card to PC on the phone using active sync.
If however, if you want to copy files from your phone's internal memory, to your PC, i used a differnt program to do this, think it was either called 'My Mobiler' or 'Jeyo Mobile something' so try those programs!
I find ActiveSync to be an extremely poor program, I recommend using 3rd party apps to get full control over your phone!
I tried to use 3rd party application such as my mobiler, still encounter the same problem, any other ways?what the main problem that make this happen?help anyone?
