How to know if connected to GPRS/EDGE or UMTS/HSDPA - Networking

Hi all,
Do you know a software which let met know what connection type I'm using between GPRS/EDGE and UMTS/HSDPA ?
The E icon tweak doesn't work on HTC TyTN... Thanks!

It has been posted on this forum that you do not need the tweak as the TyTN will show you the network that you are connected to. I would undo what you have done and check that you are really in UTMS coverage.
... or even try a search for other threads on this

Really?? So what should be displayed if I'm connected to HSDPA?

'U' I believe. Should say in the manual.

Ok, so this is my point.
I want to know if I'm connected to UMTS or HSDPA.
and the same beetween GPRS and EDGE.
I never saw a "E" on my screen ...

Right you are Taron.
I never saw "E" on my TyTN, though I'm sure I was under EDGE coverage.
I think TyTN just doesn't show clearly what precise kind of network you are connected too.
It just shows "G" if you are under GSM network data coverage (GPRS and EDGE).
It will show "U" if you are under 3G network (UMTS and HSDPA).

what a pity, but thank you for the confirmation
One more question http. Do you have the voicemail icon working fine on your TyTN?
I'm on SFR, and when I have a voicemail, there is no icon neither SMS (even if my voicemail is configured to send a notification)...
Thanks,

just so you know there is a registry hack to show the E instead of G when you are on the edge network. this works seamlessly. i dont know for sure but there is probably a similar registry hack for the same thing with the UMTS/HSDPA connections.

Thanks for the tips, but it was said that this hack doesn't work on TyTN

You can use HSDPA in France ?

Yes, SFR is claiming to provide HSDPA in some regions :

I have been trying the same, but in vain.
The reg tweak working for the previous models is not working on the Hermes.
Which brings me to the following question:
Previously with ADDING this new reg key the EDGE differentiation started after rebooting the device.
So some .dll obviously checked for this key, parsed and decoded it and invoked the function in the device.
Question:
How is a (secret) reg key added to the registry parsed ?
Will we find somewhere in a .dll the string "EnableDifferGprsEdgeIcon" (or in the case of the Hermes something else) in real text ?
Can we look for such a value this way ?
Come on all experts here!
I cannot believe that nobody can detail on this here!!!
(P.S. Whenever I try to analyze the ril.dll with a hex editor it just shows zeros. Why ?)

Actually it is not that simple.
First you need a proper ROM dump, with the files intact.
Then you have to know which DLL is responsible for the feature. I don't think it's RIL, it may be device.exe or whatever is showing the taskbar.
Then you need a good decompiler like IDA, which will find the strings.
Keep in mind that all strings on the device are in Unicode so when you look at a string with a hex editor you will see something like this:
65 00 66 00 67 00 68 00
for ABCD
With IDA though you get a special window showing you the list of strings.

there could be difference between what info different operators send to phones connected to their network
so this could explain why ppl expiernce different things connectionwise

help me understand this. i usually just intall 2 cabs on my 8125 after hard reset. one is the GPRS settings for media net and the Edge icon. now that cab only changes my GPRS to icon to E. prob is it dosnt change. now if i install all the extended cab files my connection is ONLY g. that must mean that there is another cab somewhere in there that enables the switch. idk someone help
this sucks. i cant even tell if i have Edge or not.

Hi levenum,
you mean a dump of all files which can be seen in a file explorer (e.g. Resco) but cannot be read, as they are marked ROM or hidden or system, don't you ?
Well there seems to be a tool for extracting such files on buzzdev, called "WM5 Files Dumper".
Unfortunately it won't work with my TyTN as it tries to write the files on to a predefied directory on "Storage Card". Unfortunately in the German version the Storage Card location is called Speicherkarte.
I do not know if it is safe to change this temporarily to Storage Card without destroying all other links and no longer be able to access or start the programs installed on the storage card.
Maybe someone could fix that rather in the "WM5 Files Dumper" where the output directory is hard-coded.
What a painful restriction ! I can imagine that this utility would be valuable for many of us trying to find out more about their devices...
I know that most of the strings are encoded in Unicode.
The Cygnus HexEditor is able to look for Unicode strings, so this wouldn't be the problem.

well for t-mobile at least, when your on 3g you are on HSDPA, where ever there is UMTS signal there is HSDPA signal (i asked the question to t-mob cs)

Pre-announce: XDA Special Edition ROM v1.2, need your help!

We're creating Special Edition ROM v1.2, the last one still based on the 'old' O2 3.17.03 ROM. We chose not yet to build based on PPC2003 because we feel many things will still change between now and the actual release, and we still need to learn a lot more in order to be able to make something which is a significant improvement over the official ROM, once it appears.
So what's new in v1.2 ?

Futhermore we fixed a few remaining issues, and depending on space we may add a virus scanner (AirScanner), an alternative POP mail client (nPOP) , and maybe more.
We need your help:
In order to be able to add more providers in the AutoConfig dialog, we need snapshot files from people that have a working setup for their provider.
Here's the procedure:
1) Check http://xda-developers.com/incoming to see your provider isn't there yet.
2) Set up your machine like someone in your country is likely to want it (12/24 hr clock, timezone (pacific for US?) and other regional settings. Create the necessary connections (at least GPRS, WAP if possible), and name them something logical (such as "O2 GPRS Internet").
3) Make a snapshot using the ssnap.exe tool provided with the Special Edition ROM.
4) Extract the following keys with all their values and data from the snapshot to a text-file:
[list:a7505d4dbf][HKEY_CURRENT_USER\ControlPanel\Phone]
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\nls]
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Clock]
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\ConnMgr\Destinations\WAP Settings]
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\ConnMgr\Providers\{EF097F4C-DC4B-4c98-8FF6-AEF805DC0E8E}\HTTP-{ADB0B001-10B5-3F39-27C6-9742E785FCD4}]

For each connection, the following keys, where XXXX is the name of your connection:
[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Comm\RasBook\XXXX]
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\ConnMgr\Providers\{7C4B7A38-5FF7-4bc1-80F6-5DA7870BB1AA}\Connections\XXXX]
5) Name the text file "Country - Provider" (e.g. "Germany-D1") and upload using ftp to xda-developers.com, username 'xdaftp' password 'xdaftp'.[/list:u:a7505d4dbf]
There's a file already there called 'Netherlands-O2' which can serve as an example.
You help will be much appreciated by others, and you'll be able to cold-boot v1.2 and have all your provider's settings right there. Deadline is this Sunday, July 6th, in the evening.

Hey, it also will be EXCELLENT if we can put our OWN LOGO (or picture) in the after RESET screen.
Dear XDA developer,
I already uploaded Thailand with AIS as the provider. There are other 2 providers in Thailand, which are DTAC and Orange. I will try to find them.
I wonder that some tools might be on your consideration in v1.2:
- Adobe Acrobat Reader
- TIFF file viewer (for viewing FAX file on our mail)
- Ephemeris for checking the Sun, Moon and Compass
- Ruler (I think this is cool, when you need to measure something but no ruler)
- Stop time for StopWatch
- FreqTune for checking the sound frequency
- Remote Display, CERDisp (Microsoft)
(All above is freeware)

Hi Jabber by mov software creates a lot of GPRS traffic as opposed to ICQ. Since both apps are freeware, I suggest you install both in the next release. What I would _really_ love is the pocket divx player which can also handle ogg vorbis and mp3. Definitely a better choice than the Windows Media Player (www.pocketmvp.com).
Installing VNC was an excellent idea!
This is a great place for info on the xda, my respects to y'all at xda-developers.com

just to let you know I had to choose two different Keys:

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\ConnMgr\Providers\{EF097F4C-DC4B-4c98-8FF6-AEF805DC0E8E}\null-corp-{FB2E8000-800B-849A-BC41-A56D8A2D7266}]
... I was not able to find the {310E8001-80B9-C8BE-C333-EB6AB0026E3C} in my German system, so I took the one with "Proxy"="new-corp:1743" line, as in you netherland "demo" file.
Let me know if this is useble or if I shall search something different...

REQ: Tool/shortcut o switch from 3g to GSM and back

I tried this in another thread a while ago but as nobody even replied I thought I should try it again before I completely give up
Is there a tool (or can someone code one maybe?) to switch between 3G and GSM without going the "normal" route of
Settings-Phone-Options-Band(or whatever it´s called in the english version) and then change it to either WCDMA, GSM or Auto. Of course you will have to disconnect any active connection before you can do that.
A tool to accomplish the same thing would really help in improving battery life as with it you could switch to 3g only if needed (websurfing) and leave it in GSM mode most of the time.
If a tool is impossible to create, a shortcut to make the procedure above easier would help. too.
Yep i would love this too any takers :>
JEREMY
You could try writing a macro using mortscript - it can simulate taps on the
screen. And yes, I'd like to have such a tool, too..
Thanks for the Mortscript hint. I managed to write a tiny little scriptlet (it´s ridiculous really, but it does the job) that does the following through stylus tap simulation and app calls:
- Open the Phonepad
- open the options dialog
- select the "Band" tab
- change the band selection from 3g to GSM without clicking OK
- call a subscript which disconnects the current connection (otherwise a bandchange is not possible). The subscript is necessary as Mortscript will not process any command that comes after a "Disconnect"
- here I would like to click OK. But for the love of god...I can´t find the right coordinates on my Trion. Can anyone help?
- here I would like to close the phonepad again
Same stuf in a second script for GSM to 3g of course.
I´m pretty sure most of it can be done through SendTab/SendDown etc. Figured that out a little too late. Might clean it up a bit to make it less resolution-dependent.
Voila
Even without the last two steps it is rather useful. When you call the script it will do everything except press OK for you.
Band Tab
I upgraded to the Cingular (1.34) rom and now I do not have the "Band" tab on the phone settings. Has anyone else experienced this? I would love to have the utility to switch back and forth as the battery drain is too fast in
3G mode.
Thanks!
See this page for details:
http://www.securegsm.com/pages.php?pageid=85
"... If you do not see the “Band” tab, please download this CAB file and execute on your device. After executing this CAB file...
The above CAB file contains a registry change for your device. No special application is installed when you execute the above CAB file..."
Please note: login is required to download.
Alternatively, you can enable "Band" selection tab using registry editor.

SecureGSM -
The CAB file worked flawlessly. I appreciate the information and your assistance.
Thanks!
Ok, I cleaned up the two Mortscript scriplets to just use sendkeys. No more stylus tap simulation, makes it a lot more reliable.
Executing either script will now open the phonepad, go to options-band, diconnect the current connection and then change the band.
Unfortunately closing the phonepad doesn´t work riliably as it will leave the phonepad screen in the foreground and the UI will freeze.
Maybe someone a little more gifted can make this more interactive (e.g. ead what app is active and switch back to it after the band change or something).
For me it is good enough for now.
If anyone wants it, let me know.
What the heck. Maybe someone can make use of it.
VERY clumsy and thrown together in a couple of minutes. Should work on any Trion etc.
You will have to edit the window captions and paths as I did this on a German ROM.
"Telefon" is "phone" or whatever the phonepad caption/link to the phonepad is called.
Works on my Trion. Improvements as mentioned above more than welcome.
Latest Mortscript beta needed. Can be found here:
http://www.sto-helit.de/downloads/pocketpc/MortScript-4.0RC2.zip
uhmm.. just my 2 cents. there is slightly better way of doing this:
step #1: change band selection to GSM or to WCDMA directly in registry
step#2: flick device radio to flight mode on and then off
Also, step #2 will restart the radio regardles of established connection is present or not.
alternitevely if you would like to close data connection gracefully:
call datadisconnect.exe located in \windows. nice utility btw. it surely has CLI mode as well.
any C / C++ programmer should be able to get this project done in few hours at most.

Great! As I said before, I just did this to have something (not much, I know).
Wouldn´t the "disadvantage" be, though, that you would have to enter your pin every time flightmode is turned off?
Do you know what registry entries this would be?
Is it HKLM,Software\OEM\UMTS,OpMode ? And if so, what would be the values for 3g, GSM and Auto?
EDIT: Think I found it. Auto=0, GSM=1, 3g=2
Is this correct?
Plus, is there any shortcut you can run to toggle flightmode? If so, these two things could be put into another Mortscript scriptlet (it can change the registry).
Thanks!
did a test over the last day I disabled incoming beams (which I've had ticked all the time apparently ) and I manually put the phone into 2g mode but had it connected all the time to gprs. man the battery life more than doubled I've still got 70% battery left after a heavy days of usage.
but I miss 3g speeds for web browsing tho. so I think a tool for 2g to 3g and back would be most appreciated preferably not using mortscript and with a message saying "switching to Xg mode" or something. unfortunately my programming skills are nearly non existant.
anyone
Jeremy
Install Flightmode.exe from WinMobileApps.com and run it via MortScript.
# UMTS
RegWriteDWord HKLM,Software\OEM\UMTS,OpMode,2
sleep 500
Run "\Programme\FlightMode\Flightmode.exe"
sleep 3000
Run "\Programme\FlightMode\Flightmode.exe"
Use OpMode, 1 for GSM only and 0 for Auto.

Yeah, it is funny indeed. But the solution you found yourself hasn't been posted here so I was thinking it should be added so people in this forum can find it. This is the international forum to share information at.
Anyway, thank you for the great solution! It really works fine and I still have the great runtime of my Trion together with fast UMTS where I need/want it. I think this has a high value!
GSM & 3G switching via Skschema Scripts
Hi folks,
I know some of you have beens using Mortscript to change the network band in the registry and subsequently switch to 3G or GSM by clicking.
Well I had a look at seeing if I could do something similiar using a SKschema script.
This is what I have come up with so far.
Skschema has commands which allow it to switch the radio(gsm) on/off as well as writing and deleting values/keys to the registry. (Tested on the Hermes)
SwitchToGSM.sksc
This script Writes to registry the value "1" for OpMode, pauses 1 second, turns radio off, turns radio on and connects to your data connection(GPRS ONLY).
Code:
#r(#rgset) #p(HKLM;\SOFTWARE\OEM\UMTS;OpMode;DWORD;1) #sleep(1000)
#r(#gsmoff)
#r(#gsmon)
#r(#connect)
SwitchTo3G.sksc
This script Writes to registry the value "0" for OpMode, pauses 1 second, turns radio off, turns radio on and connects to your data connection(Auto - if 3G present it will connect to that).
Code:
#r(#rgset) #p(HKLM;\SOFTWARE\OEM\UMTS;OpMode;DWORD;0) #sleep(1000)
#r(#gsmoff)
#r(#gsmon)
#r(#connect)
You could assign both these Skschema scripts to a hardware buttons, even better if you use the voice notes button on the Hermes you could use one script for [press] and the other for [press & hold].
toggle2G_3G.sksc
This script I have tried to add some intelligence into the script, I wanted to use a script for 1 hardware button and for just one [press] to switch to GSM then a second [press] to 3G - so it really toggles between the two modes.
To achieve this I used a little bit of logic and an extra key in the registry.
Code:
#r(#rgget) #p(HKCU;\Software\sk\schema\rad;Gsense;DWORD;0)
#r(#iftrue) #p(set2G)
#r(#rgset) #p(HKLM;\SOFTWARE\OEM\UMTS;OpMode;DWORD;0)
#r(#rgset) #p(HKCU;\Software\sk\schema\rad;Gsense;DWORD;0)
#r(#goto) #p(act)
#r(#label) #p(set2G)
#r(#rgset) #p(HKLM;\SOFTWARE\OEM\UMTS;OpMode;DWORD;1)
#r(#rgdelkey) #p(HKCU;\Software\sk\schema;rad)
#r(#goto) #p(act)
#r(#label) #p(act)
#r(#disconnect) #sleep(1000)
#r(#gsmoff) #sleep(1000)
#r(#gsmon)
#r(#connect)
This is how the script works the "rad" key which I have put in the Skschema registry path, is completely functionless - It's merely there as a check.
The script firstly checks to see if this key exists?
If it does then the script moves along to the "set2G" line.
If it doesn't then the script continues, The OpMode value is changed to "0" - enables AUTO mode. Then the "rad" key is created and the script moves along to the "act" label.
following along from above at the "set2G" label, OpMode value is changed to "1" - enables GSM mode only. Then the "rad" key is deleted and the script moves along to the "act" label.
At the "act" label the current data connection (if present or not) is disconnected, a pause before doing this of 1 second, the radio is switched off with another pause of 1 second, followed by switching the radio back on. Finally the data connection is re-connected.
The "rad" key is used to enable the script to decide which switching is required to GSM or to 3G.
Maybe a similar toggle action in one script could be done in Mortscript?
For anybody with Skschema I have attached the 3 script files.
Chalky.

Can someone tell me which registry keys to change, to enable Band selection using registry editor? The cab file mentioned did nothing on my device when I clicked on it.
I looked in WM5_Tweaks_Other and saw nothing refering to band selection. Thanks.
Hi. I am doing a program with a botton icon to do this.
to activate only gprs:
1) Change the registry.
2) turn radio off.
3) turn radio on.
but only when i turn off the radio using comm panel the system "refresh" its data from registry and then it works. Any idea?
Thanks

CellID & Rxlev & GPS

The program updated. free to use ...
Hi all, I write a simple program for Telecom. Engineeger:
1) It can show CellID, Rxlev & LAC
2) base on the database (txt file), show cell site info.
3) GPS function
4) Open log file to record
The Log file format in :
Latidute,Longitude,CurrentTime,CellID,Rxlev
And you need to copy the files 2G.txt,3G.txt & site.txt to the root directory.
the text file at the main program directory ( eg. program file\fieldtestv1.2\).
Note:
Only test at my HTC P3600i phone, not sure for others ...
And sorry for my poor english ..
New Version ,It's surprised,But My PPC(model:O2 atom Life) Cell Id is Error。
Picture :
I have this error on my "Tornado" smartphone (WM 6.1).Why ?
By default, the program will read the files "2G.txt", "3G.txt", "site.txt" & "SiteNo.txt" when startup. so if you missing one of file , it will show the error message. you should create the 4 txt file to the root directory.
If you are a telecom engineer, you may entry the field data to each txt file or just create a empty file, it should be work !!!
that's a brilliant program.
btw what's the file format for the SiteNo.txt and is there a way to change the frequency of the log file to every minute or 30 seconds.
It would be great if you could do the site info match using the cellid ( CI ) and LAC. due to certain telco would recycle the cellid due to the 65536 limit.
Few more suggestion for the Log file.
1. Log file can be saved to storage card
2. BCCH info from the cells not from the txt file included in the log file
3. Logging frequency i.e 10 secs , 30 secs , 1 minute
4. LAC included in the log file
It is actually 8 to 10 db more when compared with an actual test tools.
bravo it's a good program.
Almost works, it crashes when i hit start or update, on my 8525 with ATT Wm6, files attached.
How do you read CELL ID ?
It is in the registry? where ?
could you show some code how to get cellid? which serial port to be opened?
On My HTC9000 PPC, I couldn't open COM2, No Com ports could be send AT
Cmd successfully
Some source code here ...
public static CELLINFO GetCellTowerInfo()
{
IntPtr res = IntPtr.Zero;
res = RIL_GetCellTowerInfo(hRil);
if ((System.Int32)res > 0)
{
rilCmd.CmdId = (System.Int32)res;
rilCmd.CmdType = RIL_CMD_TYPE.CELLTOWERINFO;
......................
.......................
if (!RIL.isInitialized)
RIL.Initialize();
RIL.CELLINFO CID = RIL.GetCellTowerInfo();
I have just started using this program as I am a telecommunications engineer.
I have emailed Frank for assistance and he has been most helpful.
The TXT files must be placed in the / directory - ie the "My Device" directory.
I have also noticed that if I use 2G or 3G mode on my phone, the program only looks in the 2G.txt file.
Try on my Hermes, on 3G band it shows only Cell ID, other failed, on 2G it shows MCC-MNC, Cell ID and LAC, but not signal level neither SC? Just reporting
Unsure why this is not receiving signal level, but the program does not yet have the functionality to extract BCCH/PSC.
All this program tries to match is the CellID - you need to have the BCCH/PSC in 2G.txt or 3G.txt
I am currently speaking with the developer to see if he wants some assistance to work on this program (i can test) - I am using a Touch Diamond
Thanks!
Dear Frank8080,
Thank you for your cellid sample program. I download and try it. This program run into my cht9100 very fine. I need one program to get cellid on wm6. Can you email your source code to me ? Thank you very much!
Does it work on wm2003 for my 818?
It does NOT work on O2 Atom, windows mobile 6 ...
hmmm... It crashed in my atom wm5.0.
Thanks for the bug reporting:
1) For the program can't read 2G or 3G txt, due to the program read the txt file base on the MNC(Network Code), so it seens that I need to add a setup page to fix the problem.
2) For can't decode the signal level (erwinpiero), I have tested on Dopod 838 Pro, it works ok. But I don't know why it's not work on your 838Pro.
3)For BCCH/PSC decoding, I still try ....
I am a mobile engineer in HongKong and the program just developed for my team use to perform the field measurement of the daily operation, so the most of function just base on the needs of my job. So if any other information you need, you may email to me, I will try to add the extra function to the program.
Hi frank, Top program, well done!! it's running on my TyTN II fine.
Could you post up some examples of how the 4 txt files should be built and a "few" examples of the info they should contain.
Also I see you're using RIL ... does your program update the CellID etc whilst the phone is "In Call". I have used CellTrack before and once "in call" the phone never updates apart from the RX level.
Thanks!!
Phil
Hi,
I haven't tried this sw, but I will do it soon (as soon as I have a PDA).
Just wondering if is possible to select what variables should be on the log (e.g.: active set, the cells that are being measured)...
thanks

Cell id Command line

Hi All,
Is there a tool which can get Cell id and LAC from command line for it to be used by other apps
Say I have script (mortscript)
Then I can call <Cellid APP> and get Cellid location where the device is
Then take action based on the Cell id.
Idea is to track the phone and let the owner know where all the phone on a web page.
I go from HOME -> LOC1 -> LOC2 ->Office (everyday)
Incase phone shows a path HOME -> LOC1 -> LOCX -> <UNKNOWN> .. the send a TEXT(SMS)/update page etc ... to alert the users.
Kind of way to make your phone secure.
Any suggestion if it can be done with any exiting tools and mortscript etc ...
http://www.xs4all.nl/~itsme/projects/xda/tools.html
has something called riltest ...
riltest - dumps all kinds of info from the phone via ril
But the zip files does not have this file... Could any one let me know if this file is available any where else.
Ok Got a riltest from Another forum which does similar ... ALMOST....
what it can do is dump all to a LOG file ... I am using a Mortscript
1. Run the app
2. make app to dump logs
3. get the details from the file.
4. close the app.
Now loop this for with a sleep ...
But still looking for better way.. Attached is the file for anyone who is looking for similar stuff.
Hi,
I too was looking for something in this line and ended up writing it myself.
Props to this chap for the code to get me started:
http://dalelane.co.uk/blog/?p=241
Basically you call 'RilCmdLine.exe' with a parameter indicating what field you want. It returns the field as an int to MortScript (I think you need MortScript 4.3b1 or above?).
Supports LAC, Country Code and Cell Tower ID.
The zip includes a test mortscript - you may just need to edit the path to RilCmdLine.exe
(Source code on request. I may even support it )
Hope this helps!

Hi
Thanks for the exe file. However I am unable to see any result when I run the exe/mscr on my mobile (HTC 3300 WM6). I did edit the path also executed from cmd line on mobile.
Also Mortscript RunWait and Run will not return any results as per the Mortscript doc. So the result has to be redirected to a file.
Could you please check and let me know if the exe is required to be executed with different parameters.
Thanks
What version of Mortscript are you running?
I had to upgrade to 4.3b2 to get the return code from the exe.
Get it here
http://www.sto-helit.de/index.php?module=download&action=view&entry=125
In the notes for b1 mentioned the return code functionality being added.
Hope this sorts it for you
Perfect !! Thats works perfectly ... I updated to MortScript you have suggested.
Excellent Work !! ... Really good. Thanks man
Will it be possible that if I don't pass any Command line parameter ... Can I get all the values... Like CELL ID, LAC etc ..
Glad you like it
Unfortunately you can get all the values at once (at the minute you can only return numbers from the exe, so there is no way to separate them).
My original idea is something along what you suggest - if I get that working I will post a new exe up here.
Thanks
Thanks onionfx! This is just what I was looking for as well. Trying to do something similar to what wishme said. ;-) The common profile switchers out there are not very useful to me because I'm more of in a rural area, and cell towers are farther apart, so my home and work cellid overlap sometimes, so I want to also take into account signal strength to see if I can fine tune it better. Will probably use Mortscript since it's the only thing I've learnt to code with for Windows Mobile.
I'm bookmarking this page to see if you eventually get the prog to output all in one line (and reduce the CPU churn of calling the same prog several times).
BTW, how about also returning nearby cells in order of signal strength? That would be awesome to fine-tune your location even more!
Good work!
Cesar
Doing some thinking about this
I can't see any way of returning all the values at once.
The C code can only return an int in the range -2,147,483,648 to 2,147,483,647 and my CellID and LAC are 5 digits each so if they ever started with a digit greater than 2 I couldn't return it.
The 2 best options I think are writing another exe that dumps the data either to a file, or to the registry in a similar way as riltest above, but without the UI part.
Then write a script that could be included, and which has nice subs to access each parameter (or you are free to write your own script calls to do this).
I'm tending to the file as I imagine reading from the registry is a bit slower than reading the file (in one go and storing all the params as variables)?
Also I can do less damage if I use a dedicated file!
Anybody got any better ideas, or has a good reason to use the registry?
Goodnight
Are we talking about GSM signal strength
REGISTRY entry: HKLM\System\State\Phone\Signal Strength (DWORD value)
More here: http://wiki.modaco.com/index.php/Windows_Mobile_5_Registry_Tweaks
Also is it possible to get all other the cellids at any point not the one phone is connected to ? I have not see any app providing this info.
Except for Google maps on mobile (without GPS) it uses triangulation technique to get the Latitude and longitude of a location with all cell id locations available. for this method to work we requires atleast 3 cell id.
Does RILCELLTOWERINFO gives details about other towers also ?
I wonder what the requirements are for the command line tool?
It locks up when I run it on my MotoQ smartphone.

I can't get this to work. I get "-1" for all 3 values. Anyone offer any reasoning as to why this may be? I believe my ROM includes .Net framwork, but I'm not sure how to check.
Thanks

Thanks onionfx for your contribution. I might need it for a use similar to the one described by wishme.

[Q] How to Modify BattDrvr.dll (So as to remove FlashLightPowerUnavailable)??

I have been searching for quite a while (~2 weeks) & have not been able to find anything that helps me do what I want. I have been working on a modified HD2 ROM for my TMOUS HD2 {based on 2.13 ROM}. I have made many changes & have been able to apply most all the mods that interest me the most. There are many references to my problem; but no permanent fixes, & I am tired of the the tempory fix.
The tweak that has eluded me is the "FlashPowerUnavailable" registry entry. I have traced everything within the ROM & could not find the registry setup for this feature. After an extensive search thru all the .DLLs, I was finally able to find the settings. They are located in Battdrvr.dll. From what I understand; the .DLL reads the battery level & automatically inserts a registry key that disables the camera's flash whenever the battery level reaches 20% or less. Even if you delete the registry entry, the .DLL will reinsert it as soon as the battery goes below 20%. Personally I am tired of having to edit the registry everytime I want to take a pic when the battery level is low. The flash adds no real power drain & therefore the "FlashLightPowerUnavailable" is a BS setting that is completely unneeded.
So, here is my question to the community. Is there anyone that can rewrite the HD2's Battdrvr.dll so as to remove any reference to the "FlashLightPowerUnavailable" registry? If it's not possible to remove it completely; is there a way to change the trigger from 20% to 1%?
With the exception of changing graphics & text; I will not even pretend to know what I am doing when it comes to modifying a .DLL file. As such, I have not even attempted to modify this .dll. I have PEexplorer, Restorator, & ResHack on my machine, but I only use them for editing graphics & icons {& occasionally text}. If someone could modify the .dll, I would be extremely grateful. Of course; I'm sure that I am not the only one that would like to have this mod done. Of course; I am also willing to try & learn if someone would want to walk me thru modifying a .dll file.
I have attached BattDrvr.dll in the below .7z file. The zipped folder contains the original module {pulled from 2.13.531.1}, as well as the actual .dll itself. Any help is greatly appreciated.
Thanx:
Hippie
I'm not too familiar with Battery drivers but if you could find a way to have it be associated with Power Saving Mode you could just have power saver kick in at %1..?
But like I said I have no idea how it works..
Sorry for the delayed responce.
BattDrvr adds a registry entry when the battery reaches 20%. It is also readded to the registry upon every reboot. One would need to create an event to monitor the status of the reg entry, & delete/change it when it is activated. Personally; I am not real familiar with the event system & have not dealt with it too much {except to deactivate events thru DotFreds task mngr}.
Would creating an event utilize any system resources? I am trying to do this without adding another footprint to the system {no matter how small}. I know that modding the .Dll will accomplish what I want without creating any new footprints. This is why I posted this question to the community to begin with.
Personally I can't believe that this hasn't been done already. I also can't believe that there seems to be no interest in this whatsoever. I can't be the only one that uses the flash after the battery is below 20%.
I didn't test it, don't have device
What i did was:
Open hex editor, Search for "00 53 E3 35 00 00 9A 1C 37 91 E5 02 00 53 E3" the number before that found should be "14" (which is "20" in decimal) change to "01" (which is "1" in decimal).
I used IDA and HxD
The modded file is in attachment

Been woundering why no one has hexed skyfire so it doesnt check for the skyfire server .. and just goes to google or so other website ..
I was able to get SkyFire working today kinda .. by "tricking" it and made it goto google .. after that .. I was able to surf NP ..
Just a thought
hmmm..i don't know about android...never tried.

Glad I found this. Will try it out when TMOUS sends me my two free HD2s. Thanks. If anyone can report back as to weather it works or not, please do. Might take me a while since mine are on backorder.
