How to go faster through large contact list without scrollin - JAM, MDA Compact, S100 General

Hello,
I dont know if it's just me or if anyone else here has a similar problem.
Apparently the contacts page has very small alphabets in the top horizontal menu, which makes it very difficult to read when I am multitasking 2 or 3 jobs at the same time.
Is there a software which has larger alphabets or can I increase the size of the font in the registry?
I do understand that holding down the cursors skips throught the alphabets fast but I need something that has an instant access to the contact list. I have more than 1500 contacts and searching them with my thumb besomes a pain.
Any suggestions will be welcome.
Thanks.

Did you notice that you can switch through the categories by pressing the contacts button several times? Provided that you maintain categories with your contacts though.

You can also keep the "down button" pressed down for a few seconds, and youll get an option to scroll through the alphabet.
I never use the letters at the top anymore.

Hello rohseq, I think maybe you can try this application Inesoft Address Book instead of the original contacts. This application will provide to you with much bigger alphabets at the bottom.

Thanks a lot seasky. I will try it. Looks very much like something I need.

Button for Contacts

I've just received my MDA Vario.
It's a great phone (I sent my MDA Pro back, because it was just too big - the Vario is perfect).
But in the Settings/Buttons section, 'Contacts' does not appear amongst the list of applications which I can assign buttons against. Most programs are in the list (such as Camera, Excel Mobile, etc), but there is no 'Contacts' and no 'Calendar' and no 'Notes' - although Record is there.
Since Contacts is one of my main points of use, I need a Contacts button.
Please can someone help me get Contacts into the list.
Thanks
I dont get it, Contacts is a pre-set button on the Vario. If you hold it upright looking at it without keyboard out, above the red button bottom right and below where it says T-Mobile is the preset contacts button.
Furthermore when you are in contacts, you get each persons name, just hold the central button at the bottom centre of the phone the loaf of bread shaped one if you like, hold it for a few secs in contacts and a list of different attributes for that contact pop up, you can scroll down and select phone numbers and email addresses.

No - It's a soft key - So Contacts is only available from the Today Screen, unlike the other buttons which are always available.
Whatever program I'm running, I want a one button press to take me to contacts.
Why isn't Contacts in the Settings/Buttons list of applications ????
Please help someone ?
My K-JAM lets me assign ANY of the hardware buttons to Contacts.
It could be that SPB PocketPlus has enabled this as it has extra features for button mapping however i am sure it was available before i installed PocketPlus.
Could this be an issue with the Vario ROM maybe?

Well I've not done anything to it and it always pulls up contacts, whether you are in a programme or on today screen, the only difference is, if you are in say Calendar you have to press and hold and not just click. What ROM do you have ?

My Rom version is 1.3.2.2 ENU (9/29/05)
Protocol 4.0.13.17
ExtRom version: 1.3.2.102
Can you help ?

Your is different to mine.
That'd be very useful if it worked... Mine is however working the same as Andrews...
Any hints on what the differences might be?
Although it's tediously two presses, doesn't the red "phone" button take you back to today (from anywhere except in a live call) and restore the contacts softkey just above it?

My Dutch MDA Vario has the contacts app in the start-settings-buttons menu, so I am able to map it to a button. If you want to do it without the settings menu, because it does not show up there, make the regedit. It can be found in the thread "Lost" some of the buttons on my 9100 or something like that. search for "lost"+ buttons and I am sure you will find it. In that thread are the registry keys where the right values for the keys are given. Just take the key you want to map contacts to and change the paths to point to contacts application (probably /windows/contacts.exe, or something similar).
Save the reg edits, soft reset and bingo. It should now show up in the start-settings-buttons.
Dox, thanks for that. Simple, but effective
Um forgive me if I'm being dense but looking at it isn't the list of applications available to map to the hardware buttons just whats in your Start Menu?
If contacts has gone the shortcut must have gone from the start menu so surely just...put...it...back?

Contacts in TF3d?

I have done a lot of searching for a program that can either replace the Favourites (aka People) tab on the TF3D interface but cant find anything? It would be lot easier/simpler to have a Tab where you can scroll through all your contacts fast and efficiently (like scrolling through all the weather countries/cities). the current contacts app is slow and doesnt respond nicely to finger sliding. Im not looking to put another application like icontact or something to improve this, but merely an interface for all the contacts on the TF3D. Just as a scrolling purpose with the option to:
1) Add a new contact
2) Sms/Phone/Email a contact
All the other details and nitty gritties I can do in the contacts app.
When in People screen in TF3D I just hit "all people" in bottom left and all my contacts come up. I have no problem scrolling through those using finger or I can use the stylus or the up and down key on the bottom of the phone. It is not slow at all. If I touch any contact up comes the contact details including phone numbers etc. Also when in that screen bottom left again has "new" that i can press and add a new contact.
Doesn't that work on your phone?
I also have massive problems with finger-scrolling on the Contacts list. No problem scrolling in "Programs" or Opera though.
Anyway, my solution was to enable D-pad scrolling in the Contacts list. Now I just tap the appropriate letter on the right side and then scroll w/ D-pad until I reach my destination. Works pretty well actually... I'm happy with the solution.

Try this! (more stuff added)

Ok, by now you probably know HTC's nice text selection tool. To use it, write some words in a HTC application (like the text message composer), then tap-and-hold somewhere in the text. You get one handle to move around, or two if you want to select a precise part.
But there's more. Change "HKLM/Software/HTC/TextSelection/EnableMagnifier" from 0 to 1. Now activate the text selection tool again as described above and try moving the single handle around...
Nice catch. Can be helpful in tight selections. I've been looking through the reg. So much stuff disabled... Why does HTC do this? They could've placed it as an option on SMS menu...
Thanks. Added to tips thread.
Maybe they disable it so we at XDA have something to do until HSPL is released
Some other simple but cool things I discovered:
* You can use the album app to crop pictures. Just pinch-to-zoom until the part you want fills the screen, then tap the screen, tap the icon on the bottom right and choose the second option from the menu. In Dutch it's called 'Schermafbeelding opslaan'. It will save a cropped copy of your pic.
* Here's a registry entry I found: "HKLM/Software/HTC/Manila/InternetPush/EnablePushInternet". It's set to 0 by default. I'm not really interested in push internet, so I haven't experimented with this, but it seems you can enable it if you want.
* Sometimes touch scrolling gets in the way of selecting text. If you want to select text, the solution depends on the context, but to start you just tap-and-hold anywhere:
-- In Opera, you can switch text selection on/off in the context menu;
-- In some apps (like while reading an e-mail message) you get a pop-up menu where the first option is 'make selection' ('selectie maken' on my Dutch device);
-- In Word, just before the pop-up menu appears, you see this: '[T]'. As soon as it appears, move your finger and you'll be able to select text!
* If you like the Footprints app but prefer full size pictures to those square 'polaroids', there's an option to save a full sized copy whenever you create a 'Footprint' (Footprints tab -> Menu -> Settings).
* The 'me' entry in the People app stores your 'owner' info. I know this is widely known by now, partly because I've been posting it everywhere, but I still see so many people complaining they can't register their applications (Resco stuff, SKtools)... because the can't find the old owner info icon. I have registered both Resco Explorer and SKtools perfectly fine without ever bringing the owner info icon back.
I haven't ever been able to get the Text Selection sliders to work on a custom rom even after setting the registry value to 1.
This is an awesome feature and I can't understand why it doesn't work.

you know it only works in text messaging, right? (well, some other htc apps too, apparently, but i couldn't name another one i've seen it in)
Yes of course... I'm aware that it only works in the realm of Sense specifically mail and text. I can do the standard selection thing but I just can't seem to get the sliders.
Any ideas?
hmm, well a common mistake I've come across a few times is people not pressing select the first time.
firstly go type some text into a new text message. (not sure where the idea it works in email came from, certainly doesn't on mine.)
ok, press and hold should bring up a cursor and the words "select|select all.
use the single sljder to set the start(or end, whichever) press 'select' nd now a second slider should join the first, enabling you to select.
Thanks for the responses guys, but as it turned out, I didn't realise that Energy ROMs are stripped of the HTC Messaging Module and that seems to be the only place where this 'feature' works.
It's a shame that's it's not available system-wide considering how easy it makes life.
I installed the HTC Messaging Client and voila, it was it there! but that excitement was short lived considering how bad HTC's messaging client is.
hah couldn't agree more. with the magnifier too its great ,, just never gets used.

HTC contacts list

Hello,
I have a little problem with the TouchFlo contacts list.
If I have opened a contact from the list and then go back to the list the list always goes to top.
Is there a way (Reg key or so) to have the scroll state before opening the contact ?
Often a contact is opened during scrolling, because the sensitivity to difference between scrolling and clicking is not so good on my TD2. If this I only can go back and must begin scroll from top again.
There is no fix for this.
You can try to adjust your pressure settings but you really just need to find that sweetspot between contacts that don't open them.
