Removed GoodLink, now the softkeys don't work - 8125, K-JAM, P4300, MDA Vario General

I just switched from GoodLink to ActiveSync for email, contacts, etc., but the left and right softkeys on the today screen still try to launch the Good calendar and Good contacts. I removed these files so I just get an error message. Any ideas how to remap these keys to Outlook Contacts and Outlook Email without reinstalling the rom?

HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Today\Keys\112 and HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Today\Keys\113
Default value = the caption you wish
Open value = shortcut to calendar.exe

Thanks for the tip, but I can't seem to get it to work. I used vidya to edit the registry--it only showed 112, not 113. 112 was set to launch the goodlink calendar. I changed it launch the outlook calendar, but it didn't work. Then, when I soft reset, the registry reverts to launching goodlink again. Any ideas? Thanks again for the help.

Can you check your \windows\startup folder, unless you softreset before the changes you made were applied there is no reason to lose them. Unless a startup process reinitializes them. As for the 113 it's not there by default because it's already assigned to the contacts. Thats's why I thought that in your case it will be there (created by goodlink) and assigned to uninstalled programs. Another possibility is a running process that would hook the key events and transfer them to programs that no longer exist. But I don't even know if this possible under WM5 (it's very easy under Windows)

Here are the programs in my startup folder:
CapNotify
poutlook
sddaemon
Services
smartskey
WiFiInit
I added 113 to the registry and set the left softkey to open the Calendar, and that worked for a bit, but then I changed it to open contacts and it started looking for Good Contacts again. I can't get any control of the right softkey.
It doesn't seem like any of the startup programs would remap the key, but my understanding of this OS is pretty minimal.
Any more ideas?
Update: It seems that if I set the right softkey to anything but Contacts it will work. If I set it to contacts it looks for GoodContacts, no matter what path I enter. As far as the left softkey goes, I can't get it to do anything but look for GoodCalendar.exe.

I'm 99,99 % sure that the culprit is smartskey...
I just hope that it's a shortcut you have and not the exe file, otherwise you won't be able to delete it. If it's the case kill the task with a task manager and then delete it from the startup folder. Let us know how it goes, but I'm pretty sure that you are almost there

I gave up and upgraded the ROM. Thanks for the help in any case.

How to select default PIM client in WM5 (Goodlink/Outlook)?

Hi there, I was wondering if somebody would know how to change the default PIM client to be used in WM5?
Detail of the problem:
I sync my Wizard locally at home with Outlook 03 (Emails and Contacts). Then, I installed GoodLink which sync with my work's Exchange.
After the installation of Goodlink, both the "Calendar" and the "Contacts" softkeys, when you press them, are now replaced by "GoodCalendar" and "GoodContacts".
I use my personal Contact list that is at my home's Outlook mostly. So knowing the 112/113 registry trick, I modified the "Contacts" softkey on the today screen to bring up the bulit-in Outlook's Contacts again. However, on the dialer/dial pad screen, the Contacts softkey (on the left), if I press it, it would still bring up GoodContacts.
This makes me think that there is a setting in WM5 for a default PIM client - wether the built in one or something else. This is really annoying me because I use Goodlink only for Email. All other Calendar and Contacts etc are on my outlook...
Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks.
Ken
Can you not sync diectly with the Exchange server instead of using the add on software, believe there is an option for this in Activesync
You could go to HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Shell\Rai in a regeditor and edit the relevant keys.
Thanks for the reply.
I just checked the contents under Rai in the registry. They look un-modified to me.
Example: The "1" in :MSCONTACTS still reads :MSPOUTLOOK -contacts
"1" in :MSCALENDAR is still :MSPOUTLOOK -calendar
If it ain't these, could it be something else?
Thanks.

And what do you have under :MSPOUTLOOK ?
BTW on mine there are no "-" so its ":MSPOUTLOOK contacts" and ":MSPOUTLOOK calendar".
I don't know why I typed the "-" in there, but it's not there.
For :MSPOUTLOOK, "0" is MSPOutlook, "1" is poutlook.exe, "2" is 1, "3" is 0, "4" is 00 A8 F9 B0 11 06 C6 01
Thanks again.

FYI Goodlink is an instant push email service - it is a little different then what ActiveSync on exchange can offer (as of now at least).
After you install Goodlink on the handheld, basically it has it's own entire Outlook-Like engine. It's own calendar, contact, notes, email, tasks which I think the interface is better than the built in one.
Again, the problem is, let say Contacts, I have one from GoodLink, one from built-in outlook. Right now everything is mapped to the Goodlink's engine. On the Today Screen, I can use some button mapping software to override the hardware and soft keys. BUT, on the dial-pad screen, the softkey on the left - "Contacts" - would still bring up GoodLink's contacts.
I tried a bunch of button mapping software that are currently available for WM5 but none can fix this.
Also, another strange thing is, after you install GoodLink, it DID NOT CREATE 112/113 keys to map the softkeys - those registry don't exist.
So it must have done it by some other method - like specifiying a default client...
Ken
Have you actually checked the shortcuts that those programs refer to. I think the POutlook shortcut points to the goodCalendar program not the outlook program. If you changed the link it may work. I hacked around with this on another device running good but have not tried it on the wizzard.

Pocket Outlook Location

Im trying to set a softkey to point to my Pocket Outlook Contacts.
Anybody know the location??
can't quite remember the format and not 100% sure this will do the trick...
try either windows\poutlook.exe -contacts or Windows\poutlook.exe contacts (without the dash)
Hope this helps.
nope didnt work.
The properties in the link should be
''poutlook.exe'' contacts
Works on my device - will post the link if you still have problems
am i missing something here? (yes this is my first PPC device) i have the cingular branded 8125 with 2.25.. and when i click on poutlook.exe i get nothing that comes up? is there a pocket version like pocket excel/powerpoint, etc?
PocketOutook Contacts Recovery and Keymap after Goodlink!!!!
NOTE: I have included a reg file that can be imported via your favorite pocket registry editor that will assign your voice command key to pocket outlook contacts!
If you navigate in the registry to
HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Shell\Keys\
you can modify the string of one of the hardware keys to
"\Windows\poutlook.exe" contacts
That will launch Pocket Outlook Contacts. I have used my voice command key because i never use voice command.
Alternatively, you could create a shortcut that passes the argument -contacts when it executes poutlook.exe.
I hope that helps!

Can't REMOVE FlexMail 2007

Hi I loaded trial WEBIS FlexMail 2007 when upgrading my Pocket Informant to 2007.
I dont like it and tried to remove it by the normal method but it reportad that one file would have to be removed manualy. Did that and now I get fil;e "wismail" cannot be opened, when ever I try to access the original message system.
I noted that the Message menu line on today screen Icon was changed when I set FlexMail as default message app. The Icon is still the webis one now.
I assume I need to change the registry to revert to original message app but do not how too.
Any Help.
Many Thanks

My experience too
I found the same thing, it seemed to have overwritten tmail.exe. This is a massive nuisance in a trial. I had found other software that did similar things and make a backup using SPB backup just before installing it.
If you have a backup before the installation, my advice is to roll back to that backup. Otherwise, I would rebuild the system from scratch.
I had the same problem, couldnt uninstall the application. You can however de-select the option that Flexmail is the default mailprogram, in the settingsmenu of Flexmail. When de-selected, you get your good old Outlook back.
FlexMail puts tmail.exe in the windows folder, which hides the original tmail.exe. You can delete tmail.exe from the windows folder and the one in the ROM will be back in view.

hey krati...have you checked your....just want to make sure before i try it....
also there are a lot of bugs in this software...
like even unchecking the default sms manager option does not restore poutlook...
Yes!. I did. Ran out of evaluation time and had to get rid of it.
Don't have the key
Just want to confirm what krati said: I've just tried FlexMail 2007 and I mistakenly let it make itself the default mail client. I found the software buggy too and had to delete tmail.exe by hand from \Windows because the ROM version had been overwritten.
All in all, not good. It's a shame they released it in this condition.

I got this email from a member here so I decided to post my response to him here as well. Personal info removed.
Thanks for your email.
FlexMail should have a rule for auto-replying, but I see you are right. I think we may have removed that before release and forgot to update the site - but I'll make sure we put that back in.
Now as to the uninstall - our uninstall is a completely clean uninstall and was tested by QualityLogic to be as such. The uninstall resets the registry keys back to normal, undeletes tmail.exe, etc.. The issue with uninstalls is not our uninstaller, its with how we deal with being the default app.
The issue is simply that because FlexMail overwrites tmail.exe, the entire uninstall predicates on removing this overwrite being successful. You see, we overwrote tmail.exe because for WM2000 and 2002 (which we originally supported) that was the *only* way to make FlexMail the default application on a Pocket PC. Even on WM2003/5 there are certain things that unless you overwrite tmail.exe the OS will still call the built in app. In all of our tests, betas, and public betas - this worked 90% of the time. But in real life it doesn't go that well. In real life, tmail.exe sometimes will not quit no matter what. We try to terminate the process with the most powerful termination API call Windows Mobile has and it will not terminate. No termination means we can't properly uninstall. Improper uninstall and well you see what happens - and frankly is what 90% of complaints are about on FlexMail.
The easiest way to usually fix this is to reinstall, soft reset and make sure no tmail links are in \WINDOWS\Startup. Manually delete tmail.exe if you can. Open FlexMail and uncheck it being the default app. Then uninstall.
You know we've been working on Rev 2 of FlexMail. We've been working on it since August. With Rev 2 #1 we got rid of overwriting tmail.exe and now use MAPI rules to do what we used to do. However this does mean that some OS shortcuts like on the Today screen won't launch FlexMail and there is nothing we can do about that. We've also had a member of xda-devs in our group pounding the app to get every bug fixed. I think you'll find Rev 2 to be far surpassing of the current FlexMail release.
I'll post this on xda-devs.

"wismail" cannot be opened
There is post after post about this on the internet including here:

How could you possibly put the product out without a clean uninstall? It looks like I am going to have to wipe out my handheld and reinstall. Please call me at xxx-xxx-xxxx or please send detailed instructions about how to fix this.
Thank you.

ipm.root?
I also tried the trial version of flexmail along with pocket informant. I sticked to pocket informant, but not to flexmail.
A few weeks ago, out of the blue, the view of my text messages screwed itself up. In the accounts-view, I can't expand my text messages account and it all of a sudden gives me a view called IPM.root. At first I couldn't even see my inbox (for some reason now I can) but I still can't get to drafts or outbox. I tried several soft resets and even a hard reset, but nothing worked. My email accounts seem unaffected.
Can this strange behavior of my uni have anything to with the flexmail? Does anyone else have this problem?

Error with shortcut hardbutton

On my today screen on my 8125, the hard button under the calender will not open the calender. The contacts button works but when I push the calender button I get "Error opening the shortcut or locating the target filename." I really don't know where to begin. The calender works when I open it from a menu or the program page. Thanks if anyone can help me out.

1) Go into the /Windows/AppButtons directory and check if the calendar.lnk file is there and if its contents are correct
2) I file is there and correct go into registry HKLM/Software/Microsoft/Shell/Keys and look under the subkeys 40C... to determine which one is related to the calendar and if it points to the right file or shortcut.
Cheers,
.Fred
None of the C... point to the calender. There is a button for just about everything else on the phone but the calender one is not there in the registry. the calender.ink in the windows folder works and will open the calender. Anywhere else I can go? I think this happened after I removed agenda fusion. Thanks

softkey.cab => calendar messed up

Hello,
I recently downloaded the application on the ftp server to reassign the soft buttons in the todayscreen (was recommended).
However, it is impossible to assign the calendar application (it always results in an error stating that one or more required files cannot be found, despite the fact that I can launch calendar from the start menu). So I removed the software, but the problem persists, even after a soft reset.
How can I get the calendar back on the left softkey, without having to hardreset my device?
Thanks!
Jörg

Hey V J, I think that is the old problem that is fixed with a simple reg tweak. It is looking for the wrong Calendar App, iirc. Try the google site search for Calendar error registry - or something like that.
Man, I love that Google search - found it in the first result - since I am feeling magnanimous, here you go:
Q: How do I fix the Calendar softkey error?
A: Regedit \HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Today\Keys\112 from windows/lsk/htccalendar.exe to windows/calendar.exe
Thanks! That was indeed the issue.
(I must have been using inadequate keywords on google...)
