Can a USB->COM port be used with an XDA - JASJAR, XDA Exec, MDA Pro General

I have a need to use an XDA as a PDA and I have a laptop USB to COM port emulator.
Can an XDA accept a USB/COM adapter?
Why?... It is a radio amateur thing and I will be controlling and obtaining feedback signals from the COM port device that I connect to my radio.
All coded in VB.Net and works fine on a laptop and I can get it to port to Windows Mobile 5.0 fine but now need to obtain USB (Host?) to COM ability.
Regards,
Dom

Any answer on this would be handy for me too...
Would make terminal connection to network devices a hella lot easier on the move - rather than booting up the whole lappy.
Is there a *good* terminal emulation proggy (terraterm style) available that anyone knows of?

The Universal should be able to utilize a Bluetooth-to-RS232 device..
It can not use a USB-to-RS232, because the Universal lacks USB Host functionality..
As for the terminal software; I used z-term on my Himalaya..
I found it to be very good for my use..

Can you make the XDA II talk to other devices via USB?

I've got a fuel map device on my motorbike, that via a pc allows you to change all the mapping.
Thats great if you've got a laptop, as you can just plug that into the bike and away you go.
I have no laptop, but do have the XDA II, so was wondering if i could connect this to the unit? The unit runs straight off a USB and requires no power.
Only other thing is would i be able to get the program to work on the pocket pc OS? It runs fine on windows. Is there any form of soft windows on the XDA II that would emulate the full windows os to allow me to run this prog.
Cheers
If you could get a serial version of the cable to plug into the motorcycle then it would be quite easy to make a serial adaptor for the pocket pc, does the motorcycle use a similar systen to OBD2 diagnostics.
yeah the place well one of the places where firewire is better then usb is that usb needs 1 master and X devices
and the xda1 and 2 are devices only
firewire all can be masters
The bike has a dynojet powercommander USB, so only USB. Sounds like the XDA II won't link up, damn. That would have been great being able to change the maps with the XDA II as its very portable and you could change whilst out on a run very easily.
well maybe if you get the backpack and then get the CF card usb card
maybe it will work as master welll i would asume it would or there would be little cause for the product to exist
Yes, this is right. The XDA2 won't function as a USB host. You do need that backpack and a www.ratocsystems.com host card. Then it will work.
I know this becuase I'm trying to link mine up to a HDD to store loads of music in my car and use the PPC as a controller but I don't want the confounded backpack - for you though on the motorbike, only using it when you need it it sounds perfect.

USB-HOST?

I came across this the other day
http://htc-vogue-100.handster.com/software.php?id=3339&for=HTC+Vogue+100
It uses the vogue's USB-Host??? Does the vogue have USB-Host driver???
I'm only asking because i'm interested in using Zeno USB host drivers http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=480899, but the device requires to have usb-host.
thoughts?
thanks.
I'm not sure what your intentions are, but if it's just for use at home, use MyMobiler. It's free and allows you to control your device throught your PC.

IrDA on X1

I have a Scuba Diving computer that I use via IrDA on the Dell Axim that my X1 has just been purchased to replace.
Can anyone tell me if it would be possible to use an external USB IrDA dongle with the X1. I've only seen Windows XP/Vista drivers listed against these dongles.
What would be involved in developing a driver?
This might be tricky, as I read somewhere on the forum that the USB port is not powered, and therefore connecting dongles (including e.g. USB drives) is difficult.
The last I saw was that it might have been possible to connect the X1 to a powered port adapter, into which USB dongles were attached.
Would it not be easier to connect X1 to a Bluetooth / IRDA dumb client which is in between the IRDA device?
it require a pda to support usbHost to operate any type of usb devices
as far as i know x1 and most htc pda's dont support usbHost

Sounds like a useful suggestion. Could you point me to the type of device you mention.
Thanks for taking the time to answer my question.

You're right on this one. It's not possible to connect USB devices to the X1 because there's no host. Even with a seperate power source, the X1 will not recognize it. Look at it this way, whenever you connect the X1 through USB, it'll act as a slave, waiting for input. Dongles need input themselves, so both devices will keep waiting for each other forever... It's like a bad fairytale!

This this the sort of device that might enable Price Charming (the new name for my X1) to get together with Cinderella (the new name for my lonely, but very beautiful Dive computer)?

reverse thetering is possible?

how can i do reverse thetering with xplay and winXP64?
if its possible
set up ad hoc network on pc and, if your pc is connnected to net via cable, bridge wlan and wired network adapters.

is it possible doing it by conecting the phone to pc by usb cable?
Reverse wired tethering (linux) - help
Strange nobody has asked this so far. I too am looking for reverse (wired / USB) tethering. BUt I use Linux.
I got the basics - first identify the interface used by the phone when it is plugged in (udev rules help required here).
Getting the interface into networking frame work - plain ifupdown scripts - no network manager.
Bridging (hope if I get the other steps, I can managing this).

[Q] Does the Nexus 7 have USB host mode?

Hi,
I was hoping I could post on the developer sub forum, but I have too little post, so I hope some of the devs can help me out.
I have in my possession a USB OTG cable, and I am able to connect it to a usb -> serial port, and send/receive data to and from a PC's hyperterminal. I am also able to send/receive data to and from one of my custom boards (something like arduino) that has a serial interface.
I've written my own program to perform this communication, but it is largely based on
- Slick USB 2 Serial
- USB Serial Monitor Lite
from the playstore.
Now, I am able to perform the above with my Samsung Galaxy S3, however, when I tried running my program, or anyone of the above programs (from the playstore) on one of the china branded tablets, which claimed to have USB host mode, it didn't work.
The tablet that I bought is ICOU7.
Now, I am desperately trying to get my program to run on a tablet, but I do not want to buy a tablet, and waste my money (which I already have with that china tablet) if it doesn't work, so can any of the devs out there, with a Nexus 7, confirm that the Nexus 7 is able to perform serial communication with PC/board through an OTG cable?
Do I need a specific OTG cable to do so?
I can't say for certain that it supports serial connections but it does have host mode. I've used keyboards/mice & flash drives without problem

Depends on what you mean by "serial" device. If you mean CDC/ACM class usb device, then yes, nexus 7 can handle those, it creates /dev/ttyACMX like on desktop linux. This is only accessible if you have root, though. But, ACM devices are also supported by android USB Host API, which means you can write android app, which communicates with such device, and it does not require root.

How about for starters, I just wanna communicate with a PC's hyper terminal through its comport? Will Nexus 7 be able to do that?

The china tablet I had was able to support mouse/keyboard too. But it was unable to establish a link to my PC's hyper terminal, which I was able to do with my unrooted Samsung S3
