Virus, flakey software or SD card problem ? - JAMin, XDA Neo, S200 General

Using an M600 with a 1GB Viking SD card
On Sunday I installed Agile Messenger, all went well.
Yesterday I made a couple of registry mods (GPRS timer and GPS icon in settings per Wiki WM5 registry changes). Again all went well.
Left the PPC on Monday night and this morning it had locked up.
Not too worried at this point as PPC's do lock up (like PC's in the early 90's).
Soft reset and all hell let loose, after all it is the devils day today (6/6/6). Today screen missing lots of loaded software, Smartskey not working, Agile Messenger not running etc etc.
When I checked the SD card half of my programs AND ALL MY BACKUP files were gone. It will take me hours to set up the PPC again. But before I do can anyone explain what happened to the files on the SD card?
As it is 6/6/6 I can't help thinking it's the devils work but perhaps it's somethine less sinister.

Not sure. I experienced this twice. First it is a full wipe (all SD data gone) and the second time it is a partial wipe (all files under Storage Card\Program Files\ are gone).
If there is anything similar happened on those two occasion, it is that my unit hanged. So, now, I tend to eject my card before doing any soft reset. Not sure if this works, but that's at least what I can do. Do a search, there are others who exp the same problem.
And I don't think it is a SD card problem as I'm using Kingston SD card, which should be quite reliable.

Cheers hanmin,
I checked with file explorer and even put the SD card in a card reader and half my files 'had' gone, not just in program files dir of SD card. I started to copy some files from PC to PPC and suddenly all the files reappeared EXCLUDING the ones in program files. At least all my backups from the root directory have not been lost. I have now made a copy of the program files directory and transferred my backups to PC. Strangely I have some files TWICE on the PPC, EXACTLY the same name, extension etc. This is from copying the files from the PC when they were already on the SD card (albeit invisible at the time). Deleted some of the duplicates and it only removes one copy.
Any idea why the files can disappear and reappear? Really bad news when program dir gets wiped. I will follow your tip and remove the SD during soft reset.

hi,
I have had a similar but "more weird" SD Card trouble
Once a day, i couldn't read a folder ("PowerMonitor" placed in "programms") anymore, putting my SD Card to a cardreader of my PC i have seen just following contains the folder:
{

"lightbox_next": "Next",

"lightbox_download": "Download",
"lightbox_share": "Share",
"lightbox_zoom": "Zoom",
"lightbox_new_window": "New window",
"lightbox_toggle_sidebar": "Toggle sidebar"
}
I had to format the Card in due to delete the unfunny chars placed in the folder

As you see, you are not alone, I had the same problem with my Dopod (if you see the post up) I have been involved 4 (four) times and I am sick of this, take me a lot of hour to fix it.
I was talking with the SD saler and they told me you have to give it us back to see if the problem is on your SD, but yesterday I prove another SD and early this morning... S....!!!!again, I lose the data on my SD.
You are not alone!!!! Somebody help us?

PLZZ- MY STORAGE CARD is "locked" ?? how can i del

im testing my 64 mega storage card on my exec.
but when im trying to delete through active sync it says - read only ect....
how do i change that plz??
plz
any 1 ?
take out the SD card and look at the edges, there is a switch.
if it is towards the middle of the card, then it is locked, if it is towards the top edge of the card, then it is unlocked.
if the files on the SD card are marked read only or system, AS will fail to delete them too.
its mmc
and has no side switch
its smooth and nothing on it
:S
???
somthing todo with the reg maybe?!
just tested it with my spare mmc card, first file read only, deleted fine over AS, it did popup a warning saying that it is read only, second file system file, would not delete, third file read only + system file, would not delete.
the message it gives is
Cannot delete file test3: Access is denied.
Make sure you mobile device has sufficient memory, that the file is not set as read-only, and that you have permission to copy this file type.
the remaining 2 test files were deleted fine using file explorer on the device itself.
Hope that helps.
sure your card doesn't have the lock as shown below in the image?

All SD cards usually come equipped with the read-write switch.

like the man said its an mmc card and they do not have a switch.
to first poster......have you tried on a normal pc card reader?
actually no...
i dont have a card reader...
otherwise - i would have formated it i guess...
and yea - the device's explorer can delete the files but is annoying like  to do it through there...
would much rather do everything through my good old pc...

Strange files showed up on my memory card

Ok, so I rebooted my phone, and it was acting strange, and saying that programs couldn't start up. When I went into my memory card, I found the following:
Folder:
Empty with strange characters
Files:
arker.tx.t 1.7G
8u` 38K
1nCo 112MB
+(square)(g(strange characters)Q and a bunch more strange characters 323 MB
And a LOT of my files were missing. I rebooted a couple more times, and everything was back but those files are still ther, and I can't delete them, and my laptop wont see the card anymore
It sounds like the FAT table is corrupt. It may now be using a backup Fat table but that will have no proper record of the files created at "crash-time" using the original table. This can lead to the problems of deleting the corrupt files.
I know you say your PC wont see the card but do you mean VIA AS or in a card reader?
If you can connect to the PC via AS and using the explore function on AS (PC) copy the good files to PC and then reformat the card. Then put the files back
If AS won't see the card can it see it using a card reader?
I think it risky to continue using the card without re-formatting it.

Hi,
I have the same problem with my HTC Touch HD blackstone running WM 6.1 pro - corrupt FAT table on memory card (SanDisk 8Gb) showing strange files:

This is the expected behaviour that now and then, after a soft reset or power off the MC gets corruped?? - isn't a way to prevent this? - without regular MC data backup?
Thanks

SD Card Issues

Jusyt started having an issue with my SD Card noticed really today but a few times in the past.
The SD card seems to 'drop out' I.E. It wont be picked up by the phone.
I currently have the 6.5 UK Offical ROM installed.
Edit:
Seems to be caused when I use RSS Hub and it downloads a feed and freezes.
Almost like it tries to write to the SD, messes up and this drops out the SD Card???
Already discussed here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=580159
Thank you for that however that didnt resolve my issue and I wasnt prepared to buy a new card just yet. (I know they are cheap but I always have to get my moneys worth! )
So I have solved the issue.
It appeared there was a file or two that were either corrupted or were located in bad sectors and when the phone tried to read these from the SD Card it failed and the SD Card bummed out.
As opening the folder containing the files also dropped out the SD Card I backed up my data thus:
Connected the phone to the pc via Data Storage.
ran xcopy from command prompt:
xcopy e:\*.* c:\phone_backup /E
This would freeze on the corrupted files so I would then reboot the phone and reconnect it and create a txt file in the C: Drive called file.txt and it contained just the name of the file.
Then you can run:
xcopy e:\*.* c:\phone_backup /E / EXCLUDE:file.txt
This would then attempt to copy the files whilst excluding any files listed in file.txt.
After a few more resets and a few more files added to the list I was able to copy off most of everything.
I then ran the SD Card through the Panasonic SD Card Formatter twice and copied all the files back.
12 Hours later and no issues as of yet. Fingers Crossed!!
If anyone needs a better explanation or help let me know!
I wish you all the best with your method, but how to apply it to an empty SD which has been formatted with Panasonic app (all settings tried)? In that case there are no files to work on..
If the card cant be read at all then it will not work but if it works up to a point and accessing something or something running (RSS HUB, scheduled email download) crashes it this may help.
I would suggest trying to card in the phone in data storage mode, in a camera, in a usb card reader. Try different ways and if one works get the files off you can.
Without using a data recovery tool like Photrec you cant recover data on a card formatted with Panasonic tools. Make sure you get what you can off it before you format!!
Sie: Thanks for taking the trouble of explaining what you did, others with a card problem might find that very useful. I use command line but wasn't aware of the "exclude" switch, it's very handy to know.
Why not "tag" this thread with something to help people find it

No problem Pete have done that now.
Wasn't aware of the 'tag' function till just.
I think it helps to add resolutions to things if you find them incase anyone else comes across the same issues.

[i9000] Swap internal and external SD card (for Froyo 2.2.1)

This post is based on the excellent post of trip007in about swapping internal and external SD cards. Trip007in's hack is for the i9003 and didn't work for my i9000 (Samsung Galaxy S). Since I couldn't reply to trip007in's post (I am a new member) I am posting it here. I am quoting certain pieces of the original post, and other's I have adapted to be valid for the Samsung Galaxy S (GT-i9000)
Trip007in:
I have seen many forum members requesting (...) for a method to increase the internal sdcard memory to enable installing games, which generally require high memory storage space or storing maps for example for standalone GPS navigation system. Again such maps requires to be stored on internal memory card for them to work. All this is possible using this mod.

Introduction: The Galaxy S has three memory partitions built in.
1. Internal Phone memory- Consists of Internal Phone storage (1.43 GB). This is not accessible through the USB mounting.
2. Internal SD card storage (5.64 GB) which is remaining partitioned memory. This partition is called "sdcard" by the system. This is the memory which needs to be boosted for increasing efficiency to install games, and applications which needs to stay in internal sdcard.
3. external sdcard called "external_sd" by system. This memory is added by user using micro sd card (up to 32GB) for storage purpose.
The problem is that the phone cannot access the external_sd card to store apps and appdata (for example, offline maps for MapDroyd or offline wikipedia files for WikiDroyd). It can only be used to store music and videos. In my case, as an international worker travelling between Netherlands and France every week, I wanted autonomy, even without network coverage, and wanted to have my maps and english, dutch and french wikipedias available offline. This was not possible due to the limited size of the internal sdcard.
This hack makes use of external sdcard as internal sdcard, thus providing storage capacity upto 32 GB depending upon the capacity of microSDcard added by user. The internal sdcard memory is converted to external_SD, thus two memory are swapped by using simple modified path in the vold.fstab.
Before going on please do the following:
1. Check if your external_sd card is accessible by the phone. You can check this through Settings -> SD Card and phone storage -> External SD card. Here you should see some space assigned to the phone.
If you have an external_sd but cannot see the space in Settings, you will have to solve that first. Maybe the sdcard has the wrong formatting or something like that.
2. Make sure that your phone is rooted. Without that, you cannot apply this hack.
3. Make sure to buy RootExplorer (or use the "ADB" method as described by trip007in. For me, RootExplorer worked faster!).
4. Make a copy of your device's original vold.fstab before following the procedure described by trip007in!
Procedure:
Follow the original instructions of trip007in in his post about swapping sd cards but, instead of using his original and moderated vold.fstab files, use the ones I attached to this post.
If the hack doesn't work for you, you can revert back to your original setting by removing the hacked vold.fstab and copying back your device's original vold.fstab.
For me the hack worked like a charm, pls see the attached screenshot.

Is it safe to use the same file on Samsung Galaxy W?

Trying to flash Elemental/SU, can't find stupid .zip files in TWRP....

Hey all - just updated to the latest software, now rerooting; I've got the latest version of TWRP working and both the Elemental and SU .zips put in the root directly of the SD card that's showing on my PC when I USB connect under "file transfer." But, I can't seem to see *any* of the same files either in File Explorer or my PC or in TWRP on the phone. I did click to mount "System" in TWRP, but it doesn't seem to make any difference and it doesn't stay when I reboot.
I'm in a bit of a holding pattern until this gets sorted out; in one thread, someone recommended reformatting internal storage - seems a bit of a nuclear option, but if it's the way to get this working, I'm for it!
Would very much appreciate any advice!

Wiping internal storage will be always better choice!
Just transfer all your data(photos, videos, and anything you need) to external/OTG/PC before wiping.
For now you can try by, boot into TWRP > advance > file manager,
Go to those files and see if those files are visible in TWRP?
Or try to put same files to external memory card or OTG and see if those files are visible there? then flash them by selecting appropriate storage.
Well heck - no luck with advance/file manager, so I wiped internal storage - still nothing. It's like two completely different storages. I do have an SD card put in as internal storage - would that somehow be complicating things?
Many thanks!

Have you tried selecting different storage?
That option is there when you go in install, there will be button to select storage.
Remove external SD and then put files to internal storage, and check. Also put files in different folder too and see if that folder is visible.
Yeah, unfortunately it only gives me three options for storage, and won't let me click on either of the last two, which read at 0 MB. So I should physically remove the SD card from my phone and then see what it gives me for available storage?
Really appreciate you patience here - thank you VERY much!

If you haven't inserted any of those, then only it will show 0. It's strange if it doesn't showing those files in file manager too.
Can you try moving other files, like photo, video or anything and see if those are visible. Did you try by creating any folder and put files in that or other folder?
Okay - under "Select Storage," here are my options:
Internal Storage (6133MB)
MicroSD (0MB)
USB OTG (0MB)
It won't let me select either MicroSD or USB OTG.
I wonder if this has something to do with the fact that after loading the newest OS update, I formatted the SD card as internal storage?
What I do get are:
boot
cache
data
dev
etc
firmware
license
oem
persist
proc
recovery
res
root
sbin
sdcard (only has one folder inside, called TWRP)
sdcard1 (nothing inside)
sideload
supersu
sys
system
tmp
twres
usb-otg
And here's what I get from File Explorer:

SOLVED! Had to format data; basically resetting the whole phone. Files appeared just fine. Now redesignating the SD to internal storage. Many thanks for all the help!!
