Can any1 tell me how to turn on the keyboards backilght ?
i have one XDA EXEC and one MDA PRO neither of which turn the backlight when i write text (a note/email/sms...)
i very puzzeled about this...
The backlight for the keyboard comes on when it is dark only as it is light sensitive
If you cover the little white 'dot' above the green make call button with your stylus and start typing you should see the keyboard light up in the day!

Click to collapse
You can also disable it so the keyboard always lights up when pressed.

Great, thank y'all !!!
In Settings/Personal, click on Buttons and go to the last tab called Backlight.
Uncheck the Backlight autosensor...

Does anybody know of a way of extending the Universal's keyboard backlight duration longer than the highest option of 10 secs? My eyes are hurting trying to see the keyboard at night.
Don't want it a lot. Maybe 20 or 30 seconds? Perhaps this is a registry setting?
TIA
Dont even need to change a registry setting mate
Go to Start > Settings > Buttons
Then click on the Backlight tab, it brings up the options here to either have the light sensor enabled or disabled, and also how long you want your keyboard backlight on for
Sorry
read ur post wrong
Only realised myself the highest option is 10 secs!
Doh!
Yes, there is a registry setting...
HKCU\ControlPanel\Backlight\QKeyLedTimeout
Change it from 10 to whatever you want. I originally set it to 60, but found that was way too long. I've got it set at 30 right now and that seems to be working well for me.
You need to soft reset after making the change before it will go into effect. Remember to turn the device off before you soft reset to make sure the cache is flushed and your change is saved.
HTH,
Brett
What about a way to change the sensitivity of the keyboard light sensor? We all I think find it not sensitive enough, and when it's too dark to see the keys, it still doesn't come on.

In what way doesn't it work? Are the keyboard lights always on or always off? At night, in the dark, do the keyboard lights come on when you press a key? Have you got the ambient light sensor enabled in the Control Panel?
I thought my light sensor wasn't working either when I first got it, not realising that you had to tap a key before it would light up.
I was also one of those that didn't know where the stylus from the box went (it was the spare)

Thanks for your reply, I have since hard reset and gone for corporate mode, and it has started working originaly in a pitch black room no matter what key I pressed, it refused to light up.
hi guys, still getting to grips with my new universal device, just wondered,
the little dot above the green phone answer key, is that a sensor for keyboard as the backlight only works in the dark, its very clever idea from HTC if it is!!! 8)
Yes, that is a light sensor.
i thought it was, but when i put my finger over it, when its light and press a button, it does not turn the backlight on, so i thought, hmmm, maybe not then. :?
You can change how long the keyboard backlight will shine using this registry hack from the WIKI pages:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\ControlPanel\Backlight\QKeyLedTimeout
I set mine to shine for a minute, and for my device to shut off after 2 minutes.
i also used a perenant marker on my sensor, as it had to be pitchback before it worked, now its just has to be dusk like.
Is the keyboard on the universal supposed to have a backlight? my mda pro doesnt and i cant seem to find any settings for it either? bit of a design flaw if it doesnt
When you bring your device into a dark (enough) area, the backlight will lit up automatically.
To test it, you can cover the small dot which is upper of green button (near hinge) and press any key.
Cheers
Wilson
Or if u click on start\settings\personal\buttons and then click on the backlight tab take the tick out of enable keyboard backlight auto sensor then the back light will come on whenever a key is pressed.
Use's a little more battery i suppose but nothing noticable and is also good for testing
Hi
is it correct that there is no backlight in hardware keyboard on this device ??
regards Bo
No, there is a backlight. Disable the light sensor and try it in a dark room.

Bo,
I my HTC version there is a back light coming up when surrounding light is weak. Keys being blue thw whole keyboard shows up in light blue...the light will only switch on when you make the first click on any of the keys.
Hope this helps.

Hello
I have a problem with my 8525 hardware keyboard.
I have the backlight auto sensor enabled and the light doesnt turn on when i slide my phone open.
But... when its on the charger it works
Whats the problem??
Im using joshes m2d light 3g rom
Thanks in advance!
Does it turn on after you start typing or does it stay dark?
it does turn on after i start typing,
but i would like to get the sensor to start working
so it will turn on when i slide the phone open
Backlight issue
I've discovered from just using my 8525 that the backlight to the keyboard goes on when I first press a key on the keyboard but only if the light in the room is very low. Sometimes it seems like the light level in the room is low enough but the backlight still doesn't go on. Too bad there isn't a low-light level adjustment for the backlight feature.
Just so folk know - it is possible to set it up so when you open the keyboard it lights up regardless of the light level and key presses. Right now I can't remember how!! but I set mine up that way ages ago. Does use more battery power however so it is not necessarily a good thing - but looks pretty.
