Hi,
I've been looking for a while now for an app that will show an incoming call on my PC screen. I have a T-Mobile MDA Pro.
The reason I'm asking - I frequently sit at the PC with headphones on listening to music while working. I've missed calls as I simply can't hear the phone - thought it would be nice to see if a popup on the PC screen would be possible via a little app. I have an app that does this for text messages so thought it might be possible for calls.
Any help appreciated (or even a 'it's not possible' as I think that maybe the case!).
Don't know if its possible or not. But you could just play the music on your phone and it will automatically mute the music when a call comes in.
I usually listen to Internet Radio .... I don't think the bandwidth would take it (or my wallet at the end of the month!)
blueivy, since you're on tmobile, bandwith is free on web&walk. So no worries
I'm not on web & walk though I don't think the bandwidth would keep up through GPRS anyway ...
USB connection to PC ( charge phone at same time ) then play internet radio over the Universal with headphones.
Sorted.
Tried it out. Windows Media Player just gets to Locating and then exits - does this for two different radio stations. Need to look for another media player for WM5.
Try TCPMP - probably the best player on the market.
Cant you set your PC as a bluetooth headset. I haven't tried it, but I know its possible.
Surur
TCPMP won't play the stations either (unknown format). Tried a few media players and they don't work.
Setting the PC up as a Bluetooth headset won;t work as the PC doesn't have bluetooth.
This is looking increasingly difficult ...

If this is the only solution then I will, however I had taken to the idea of using the phone to play the internet radio as opposed to the PC. I think this would be the best (and cheaperst) choice, however the players don't want to know about the streams.
The only thing I could think of would be to use an app like Callwave. I've never tried it, so I can't say how it works, but it's supposed to work well. Just turn off your phone and callwave will forward any calls to your computer, and you can answer it there. It does alot more too. I plan to set it up when I become a desk jockey again in the near future.
http://www.callwave.com/
Seems to be a US service only. I'm based in the UK.
I have a cheap solution Get yourself a CRT monitor. Whenever there is a phone call, the screen will flash automatically Free services from CRT monitors (now you wonder why LCD doesn't have this cool features )
Now there's a thought ...
Damn. No room on my desk.
Why not put your mda next to your pc with the screen open and in sleep mode. That way when you get a call the screen turns on and you would notice from the corners of your vision.
Come on, if you don't see that you're either blind or so focused on work you wouldn't even notice if the building caught on fire.
That's what I'm currently doing. However as TomTom changes the backlight settings for the phone to 10 mins on external power (and it's connected to 'external power' via the USB and syncs with AS every now and then mins so the backlight never goes off.
I can (and have been) changing the backlight settings back to 1 min, but TomTom keeps changing it back so it's a pain.
When the backlight is on all the time you don't notice if a call comes in. When it's off you do notice a call. However when it's off it also springs into life every now and then when ActiveSync kicks in.
Just looking for a solution that will stop me having to faff around that's all (as that's what I'm currently doing).
extrem soultion
you could use Innobec SideWindow, to make the pc you use make your phones screen extra monitor and when you get a call it reverts back to your phones screen and the computer pops up with a message saying you phone has disconnected. I'm sure you will notice that - the app is also quite funky
Probably very low tech, but I bought a few 'blinking stickers' a few years back that blink on their own when a phone call is received. Stick a few of those on your mda, and you're all set!!!!
Edit: Like these:

Hi every 1...
i've got a question...
Does this cable from my old nokia N95 work on my SGS 2? or can i plug i into the device without damaging the Phone? (Shorting it or sumthing like that...)
EDIT btw: even tough, there is little bit of "Pinkysh" in the pic, the SGS2 takes awesome pic's lol
No, Have tried the one from my N97, all it does is screw up the sound in the headphones when connected through the remote. Shame really as I have 3 of these lying around the house.
Something like that, just with a digital Volume Rocker and music controls would be Great! does any1 know something like that, wich works for the SGS2?

btw: i need this also as an "extension cord" for my headphones, this would be rly cool 'cause if the cable on the hp-jack would break, (and it usually breaks right on the hp-jack wich is plugged right on the device...) the only thing i had to replace would be this cable, not the expensive headphones...
btw sorry 4 my horrible english lol

Your English is good. But sorry, I don't have an answer for you.
Look at this though

It supports the mobile standard with in line mic and play/pause/DD button. Any headset that supports that, example is Bose MIE2 is a great one I use, works just fine. Plenty of options out there.
Hi every one...
could i use this one:
http://www.amazon.com/Sony-Ericsson...46I0/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1310809886&sr=8-2
and asign the single button that way, that it would skip to the next track? and if this would'nt work, would it even play music correctly? (since i also need this as an extension cord for my headphones... thanks

I don't know what Sony Ericsson supports, if they use their own method, or follow the industry standard. The sgs2 supports the industry standard which is in line mic and button for play pause ff rw. If that headset is standard then yes it should work.
Fyi you won't have to assign any buttons. Its just recognized and works automatically for any headset.

Hi, you pointed out, that the GS 2 supports the industry standart, aswell as the iPhone, i think! So i assume that this one would work, since it's made for the iPhone...: http://cgi.ebay.com/Volume-Control-...ssories_RL&hash=item43a7d4af1f#ht_2065wt_1139
But it's from a chinese seller...
I purchased the Griffin Smarttalk Adapter, it's about £7 from Amazon (can't post links yet!) it works flawlessly. Good price too!
I use it in conjunction with the Headset Button Controller app from the market, so I can customise what actions are performed on the button clicks. Plus you can specify time delay for clicking etc. Highly recommended.

See I don't know cause its my understanding that apple uses their own slightly modified method.
What I did was went to best buy store and saw different headset models with button control. Each had an iPhone specific version, and a regular mobile version. So I bought the regular mobile version, and it works with the android devices I've tried. So I have a hard time giving you exact advice on which ones will or will not work. I'd think that most will work.
Wish others could give more info.

Now I just need to remember where I put my cable amongst the mess at home...
i decide to mount my xoom on my dash so i been working on that
here are some pictures for the progress i will update this daily
this is the main idea of how i will change my dash

this is the original dash
the xoom size
just need to trim the dash
check if the xoom fit
start with fiberglass
cut the fiberglass
making the front
i still need a lot of work i will add a phone base (defy) inside the tablet , need to wired a lot of stuff to charge and audio from both devices , add a mic for the phone without losing the OEM stereo
reposition the stereo and all the switch´s , buttons i remove from the dash ,
need to bondo the dash and lot lot lot of sanding
Exactly what i will be doing when the new ride arrives.. Will have to use a 7 inch tab though
Time to get PARANOID bout your ANDROID
Any updates? I'm always intrigued by xoom car/truck integration posts. I'd probably attempt something similar if my G8 didn't rely on the stock screen for HVAC control.
interesting post - will subscribe for updates
Today I will post the rest of the pictures I just need to wet sand to finish it
Sent from my Xoom using Tapatalk
Are you planning to use an OTG adapter mounted in the bezel for USB device hosting? That would be icing on the cake.
Actually I did use the otg also a extra mic, charger, phone base, with charger and audio jack for calls
Apps, tasker, tablet talk, musicpro, waze, and many others
Sent from my Xoom using Tapatalk
Also I forget , I'm gonna use a web cam for a reverse camera, just need to find the correct cable to turn the webcam on/off adding a relay
Sent from my Xoom using Tapatalk
ok lets continue
this is the modification to add my phone base a defy with a custom rom CM7
adding some fabric to avoid scratch
adding bondo and the charger and ogt and a lot of sanding
almost finish but need more sanding
testing some audio connection
adding the usb extension
taking apart a phone charger
taking apart a phone handsfree and remplazing the mic for one bigger
testing the color of the paint still need a lot of wetsanding
adding the new mic to the dash
im still working on the oem stereo adding the switch i remove from the stereo dash
i will add the pictures in a few hours
continuation
the audio and chargers installation
the audio connection phone/tablet/cd changer
the new stereo place and switch
testing the final mount
this is gonna be the phone place i add this cuz if i dont like to take my xoom one day i still can use my phone as head unit
this isn't finish i still need a lot of sanding the worst part and painting this paint is only cuz i get tired and wanna see how will look finish but is far to finish yet , need to add some extensions for the switch
so far the sound is great thanks to tablet talk i dont even need to see my phone anymore , and tasker allow me to turn on off the tablet when the car start
with tasker i add some profiles to turn wifi tether when the charger and audio jack in place on the phone
on the tablet i did more profiles , for day and for night
like turning the screen on while charging, change cpu , brith auto off etc ...
i still need to find the shell command to unmount a usb to adding to the profile but is not a big deal
all this is thinking to remove the audio jacks after i get a xoom dock right know is to expensive in my country to get one and the shippings are to high if i order in other place so until the price get low.
i will take apart a xoom dock and use the circuit to remove the outside jacks for the xoom
looking good - cant wait to see what it looks like 100% complete
I am currently using this tablet at a laptop replacement, mostly for school. I want to know if there is a setting or app that any of you know of that works in a similar way to a PC setting where you close the lid, and the device sleeps until you open it and tap the screen/mouse/etc, and after a few seconds, you are back where you were before.
With a PC, I like that I can close the lid put it in my bag and trust that:
A. it will not overheat in my bag.
B. The charge will be more or less the same a few days later, or even a week later.
I want this on the tablet. If I am not using it, I don't want it doing ANYTHING, but I don't want to have to power it off each time.
Is this possible?

Go to settings Power Saving mode have wifi to turn off when screen is off. Turn any sync off on your social networking apps and google sync.. These will all help you . There is no HIBERNATE TO DISK THE Feature you are talking about on your laptop

Thank you. After a little digging around I found an app that immediately puts an android device into deep sleep when the screen is turned off. This is more or less what I am looking for. It's called..."Deep Sleep Battery Saver."
There are also a few apps that automatically wake /put to sleep an app when you open/close the lid.
Works via special cover or via light/proximity/movement sensor.

It's not so much the LID part that I need, it's the sleep part, and the battery savings that go along with. I have been looking at those "Auto Sleep/Wake" folios.
Sadly, I doubt this app will allow the tablet to spend nearly no energy in deep sleep the same way that most laptops do, but I'll take what I can get.

What app do you use?
None?
It's a setting in WiFi options. Just takes about 5-25minutes after screen off till it shuts down WiFi.
If you want it instant use Tasker.
Use An Android Phone As A Dashcam
This is at least the 60th car accident I've been in this year. I swear it's not my fault but as soon as the judge sees my driving record, I'm toast! I've been telling myself that I'm going to get a dashcam for the past few years and I just never get around to it. If a dashcam is just a camera that starts recording when the car is moving, then why can't I just use that old Android phone that's collecting dust in my BDSM chamber? Well now you can!
This will work best with a phone that has lots of storage or an SD card slot.
To convert your phone into a dashcam, you'll want to use the app DailyRoads Voyager.
Download DailyRoads Voyager

You'll want a sturdy window mount to get the best footage. you can find them on Amazon for around $20.
Here are some of the features you'll get with the DailyRoads Voyager app.
Background video/photo capture, with optional buttons over other applications
Auto start and shutdown based on car dock detection and related options
Videos/photos are timestamped & geotagged
Automatically determine street address of retained videos/photos
Display videos/photos location on a map
Display speed, elevation, timestamp and GPS coordinates on videos/photos
Option to change speed units (km/h, mph) and date format
Overheating protection
GPS can be disabled to reduce power consumption
Brightness adjustment option allows less distraction when driving at night
Built-in file manager, video/photo browser
There are several apps that offer dashcam recording but this one definitely has the most useful features. Give it a shot and stop putting off getting that dashcam!
perfect
This is a great idea! I am going to try this out with my old phone.
This looks great, going to give it a go with an old phone. One question, can you have the phone screen off while driving and it still records or does it need to be on?

The screen has to be on but you can just set it to be very dim.
AutoGuard supports background recording:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.hovans.autoguard
This is a nice idea that maybe 90% of the people already looking for a dash camera thought about.
The real problem here is not finding a suitable application (like the one you thoughtfully suggested) but having your phone actually behave like a normal dash camera: turn on when the car turns on, turn off after you turn off your car. Especialy, not having the huge delay in starting up as every android phone has: a dash camera starts up (I mean from totally off, with a dead battery sitting idly in there) in just a few seconds.
The first problem might be solved with tasker, joining the "charger on/off" event to the video recording app, the second one is not easily solvable IMO.
I wouldn't know tho, since I own a chinese dash camera which sadly has no GPS, but which I paid less than any decent second-hand android phone (16€ because I wanted a "good" one) and worked as intended straight out of the box without any intervention on my part other than setting up the resolution

Well, the solution is not let the phone switch off. I don't think its much of a problem considering the fact that it will be connected to the charger throught out the drive
Pauses when the veihicle is turned off might drain the battery in standby for so long that the phone could turn off automatically. Chances are also that the old phone you put in your car for this purpose already has a dying battery (not that brand new battery won't die pretty fast by being on charge during most of the time)
Unless you take power from a different outlet than the cigarette lighter, which is powered on only when the car is on, but that in turn will drain the very own car battery, albeit it's got way more power reserves, but still a overdrain risk if your car stays off for long periods.
Having to remember to turn the phone off and on again when you need it is still bothersome, plus as I said it will take some time to be operative when you turn it on.
I thank the op and others for bringing up the two suggested dashcam apps (DailyRoads Voyager & AutoGuard Dash Cam), and I agree that a phone doesn't "act" like a built-in dashcam (e.g., go on and off with the ignition switch) but I wouldn't expect an Android dash-cam app to be as good as a built-in system anyway.
It just needs to work, where I'll test the two suggested dashcam apps on my next road trip, but I will note for others first that I had to loosen my FOSS Google Play Store client to even find the two suggested apps above (both, unfortunately, require GSF and both even more unfortunately, contain ads).
DailyRoads, free, contains ads, requires gsf, rated 4.1, 1M+ installs
AutoGuard, free, contains ads, requires gsf, rated 3.8, 1M+ installs
The goal, of course, would be to find a dash cam that is at least as good as those two but without those two unfortunate developer decisions (which I understand why they choose them).
UPDATE: The AutoGuard Dash Cam app requires a login to a mothership which, even though it allows for "guest", seems like something an app suggested for general purpose use should never need, given the obvious negative privacy implications. Maybe someone can expound on why it needs any login to anything when all it's supposed to be doing is recording onto your own personal device.
whats up everyone new here so I'm not sure if I'm allowed to post videos I have a Chinese android HU I've tried contacting the sellers they basically tell me beat it kid in so many words , anyways my HU doesn't have the car settings app or the extra settings like other androids mines is like hidden you can see it when you search it in the apps but no way to open it , also in when you open normal settings it says sleep but when you open there's no sleep , here's the video ...

You probably need to post screenshots of your device info page and firmware versions. One though is was this plug and play? or did you have to wire it? If you had to wire it perhaps the one of the power wires is not connected and the device can't keep power to the unit when you turn the car off. These things need access to power to fast boot. Mine has a setting to keep the unit on for a while after shutting car off, but that's not the fastboot option, on mine fast boot is just built in, no settings(that I've seen), which is why it may be hardware or wiring.

Right and for the most part for most units I would agree with them, but are they saying your unit is designed to cold boot when car is turned off/on?
I'm not sure what they're trying to say I know I've been asking them since May of 2020 about it lol and nothing , I just know like 3-4 of my old androids I had the sleep option ,car settings the extra settings all them other features this one I bought it cause it said it had split screen but only one app opens the split screen which is igo but it closes as soon as I press split screen option and this one also has hdmi put in the back besides it being a 10" because I bought a SUV but it's not working like I want it to , I been thinking of changing like software/mcu I think it is idk . do you think that would be a good option to do ?
I can't speak for what custom firmware options you have, but I can tell you I have no sleep options either, what I have is a single option how long to leave unit active after accessory power is off, but no options for how long to sleep before hard power off. As I understand it most units won't hard power off for several days. I've only seen mine hard boot once when I wasn't pushing the reboot button.
