Is there any way to allow more start menu items than the current 7 item limit? I'm guessing there might be a simple registry edit, but I can't find it anywhere...

Have a look for a program called smallmenu (free) and smallmenuplus(not free) think its by tillianosoft.
Changes your start menu allowing you to completely customise your menu.
Matt
That's what I use and I can confirm it works brilliantly. Had to use the file explorer to modify the start menu in /windows, because doing it through the host computer via active sync 'explore' kept on throwing errors.

WM5's default limit is 7 items. is there any way to modify the registry to allow us to add more than 7 items into start menu?
BTW, is it possible to add the memory icon to the start menu?
thanks advance.
BR
Unfortunately, the 7-item limit is hard-coded into Windows Mobile.
More than 7 items would cause the menu to be longer than the screen-size when rotated.
There's no native way to add the memory icon to the start menu, but there are utilities out there that will create shortcuts to the control panel items for you. If I'm not mistaken, PHM Powertoys did that once upon a time.
thanks very much!!
try file explorer
haven't tried this myself, since I really don't need more than 7, after playing around with hard keys and app keys. But I think you just copy the shortcuts under /windows/Start Menu/Programs straight into /windows/Start Menu. I usually make programs that were installed manually show up in "Programs" by placing shortcuts in /windows/Start Menu/Programs, so that I can use the Menu and Buttons applets to map keys and manage the Start Menu. also, I get rid of old Start menu items that way by deleting them from /windows/Start Menu. So, try putting more than 7 shortcuts and see what happens.

i tried but doesn't work....should give up?
You can create folders to bypass the 7 item limit: my start menu contains "Office" (folder) and "Outlook" (folder) and that way I have quick access to all of the outlook functions and office functions without a seperate icon for each on the start menu.
Now if someone could figure out how to implement a cascading start menu...
You can also use small menu

thanks for all your posting!
On my XDA mini, I had the convenient little icon in the tray (at the bottom of today screen) that was a shortcut to the running programs box in the settings menu.
How do I enable this on the Wizard? I don't want to have to install a whole task manager program, when the one built in works just fine. I just need to get to it easier.
try WM5NewMenu by saman, where you can set a shortcut for this particular setting, among others, through any of the softkeys or the buttons. it's a drop-down menu list, though, not an icon.

Thanks, PHM tray is closest to what I was looking for, but is it windows mobile 2003 only?
I really would just like to have that little icon that goes to the memory screen back. The Magician had this, and I think other models do too.
This is the solution
Create a shortcut that has the following contents
44#ctlpnl cplmain.cpl,4,2?deviceinfo.exe,-103
You can do this by creating a shortcut to any program, then using activesync explorer to find it, copy it, and paste it on the desktop, open it with Notepad, and edit it. Start with a PPC shortcut so that it in the right character set.
Then return it to a folder on the PPC and put it in PHM Traylaunch. It gives you one touch access to the Settings/Memory program. The part after the ? controls the visual icon.
thanks! I'll try this...
though, I am sure this must be possible through some sort of registry setting...
I am digging through my EXTROM on my old XDA mini to see if I can find out
after all this, I just resorted to putting the shortcut in my start menu... it'll do for me I guess... :?
I've attached the link for those who want it.
I like things to be simple. No extra software to install, no complicated settings. Just click it and done!
thanks for all your help guys

To put it anotherway, can somebody tell me what shortcut can opens the programs window or the settings window?

I knew that. I was talking about one-button-press access to the Programs window, and not to the Startmenu.
So I'd like to open the programs window by pushing the left soft key.
Then use WM5NewMenu to create a new menu containing all your programs .. then use the left softkey to launch that new menu ..

Thanks, but it'd be too much. I use almost all of the programs. I've sorted them into sub folters, it looks like almost a "normal" phone menu system.
And that's why I'd like to access them by one key...
Anybody? else?

Use Resco Explorer and browse to windows-start menu and highlight the programs folder, tap menu and choose 'create shortcut in start menu' then after closing down Resco go to settings and choose 'soft key' in there, choose program. works for me! Also if when using Resco you goto menu and choose large icons in the 'view' sub menu, the layout will look very similar to the view when opening up programs the original way. Hope this helps!

Thanks! You are beating about the bush!
It's almost that I wanted, but it runs the Resco Explorer, and the Resco is showing the programs folder.
The result is not bad, but starting the Resco takes more time, and more memory than the "normal" programs window
Somewhere I saw some *.cpl file (or what), in a shortcut that opened the settings window. I thought there is a similar solution to the programs folder too. So i'd like to know what should contains my .lnk file, that runs the normal programs window.
Any solution for this???
Thanks

I also want to know how to map the "Programs" to the softkey!! And it seem no one know the answer!! and the path to show the "Programs" in icon is not just a simple .lnk
Searched around for quite a while and couldn't find a solution to this, maybe someone with with more knowledge on resource hacking can help out.
Using the start menu on WM Professional devices is not conducive to single handed use, its actually quite cumbersome. I would like to remap the *on-screen* start button to simply open the programs folder ala WM Smartphone. Is this possible? I believe it would be much easier to manage on the go and would skip a step which is always beneficial. The only problem I could see is creating a link to "settings"
Any help on this would be much appreciated.
Search for the application folderStartPgm.exe
And after from Settings -> Personal -> Buttons, assing the button to this application(firs must to make a shortcut points to \startmenu\programs folder
I've seen that before, and although very cool I would still like to remap the Start button and avoid an unnecessary step. Any other ideas?

I don't know about mapping the Start button to bring up the applications folder, but using WA3 (or probably a registry tweak but I don't know it) you can remap the Start button to Windows\Start Menu\Programs, and have all of your applications displayed in the first drop-down menu rather than just 7. It also leaves access to Settings too...
Copy the attached file programs.lnk , to your \windows\start menu\programs , and use the buttons settings to bind the link to the program.lnk
---
To create a shortcut to a folder:
Use Total commander, browse to the location of which you want to make a shortcut, highlight the folder/file you want, from the File menu in Total Commander, choose >>>> on top , and then choose create short-cut, then save the output link to the \windows\start menu\programs.
---------------
Hope this helps

Sounds like a great alternative to the classic (limited) start menu, but I want it gone completely. It's too cumbersome for use in the car.
Anyone?

This is a great idea and rereading my post I can see how it may be slightly confusing, you see I want to change the Start menu button in the top left corner of the screen that opens the menu to directly open the programs folder. If anyone of you has used a windows mobile smartphone you know what I mean. That way all you have to do is tap the top left section of the screen and scroll to your app. no more tiny menu to hunt and peck on while trying to do important things like you know driving, or bike riding, etc...
Thanks for all the suggestions so far guys.

Me to has been looking for this. To make pressing the on screen windows icon pop up the programs folder, but one other problem, how to then access settings folder.

for me the filename to start programsfolder is folderview.exe
just need a way to link it to the icon.
Good luck anyway
Try this program.
In search for a solution, you can maybe use "LargeStartmenu.cab". It makes the starmenu (and text in programs) larger. The version in the "Diamond Apps (OEM + CAB)" thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=395400
works for my Touch
You can find folderStartPgm.exe here:

I found it quite difficult to live with default WinMO 6.5.3 save as/open dialog. They are too simple allowing just to acces my documents and folders one level deeper. I've found this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=513465, but compatible list at http://tillanosoft.com/ce/tgetfile.html doesn't include many apps I use.
I'd be able to write my own dialog, but I don't know how to hack windows, if possible, to use it instead of built-in one. So if someone know how to do it or has the solution right by hand I'd be glad.
Thanks
Edit: I've found this changer http://www.freewarepocketpc.net/ppc-download-file-dialog-changer-v1-66.html , but couldn't get it working also. Looks like it's for earlier version only...

it should work, when set properly.
and it works beautifully.
This is the one that I use. I think it's the same as the file dialogue changer 1.66 (Edit: it is). It's really simple to use. All it is is a control panel item. Open it up in Settings/System/File Dialogue Changer, check the box, and you're done. It was written by Houming, who also did the File Explorer Extension, that is really popular.
What means set properly? I installed it and soft reset but nothing happend. There's a shortcut to options, but I got checked button to use this dialog and no exceptions added. Still my Diamond 2 refuses to use it..
Is there a shortcut for it in the \windows\startup folder? That's all that you need. When you open it and make the selection, it creates that selection and it should work.

cpl makes shortcut in startup indeed, it's contents:
24#"ctlpnl.exe" filedlgchg 1
but it should be activated by tick in cpl..make it manually to test, if it works.
