Hello All,
Recently i have installed tom tom 5 with gb map and voices as well, but for some reason its slows down the magician, i guess the memory does'nt allow
heavy programs. All i want to know, may somehow i can upgrage ram or rom ? OR transfer whole tom tom into my sd card its 1 gb anyway. I copied tom tom cab files and
gb map plus voices in to sd card and run them from there, i thought its gonna be installed in sd but may be it did'nt.
Does anybody came with this experience before please let me know.
Regards .
Thanks

You can do both. There are companies who offer to upgrade RAM from 64MB to 128MB. I had this done by a company in Germany (can't find the link right now), and there are others in other parts of the world.
However, you can also just move TomTom to your SD card, which is quite a bit cheaper
Plan A: It's been a while since I installed TomTom on my Magician, but I really think ActiveSync asked me if I want to install it to the default location. If you chose "no" there, you'll get a list of alternative locations, including the SD card (must be in the PocketPC at that time, of course). Maybe someone can confirm this - then all you'll have to do is to uninstall (from the PocketPC only, not from the PC), then re-install TomTom.
Plan B: If Plan A doesn't work, you can copy the .cab files to your PocketPC. But then, instead of just opening them, get cabinstl (http://www.s-k-tools.com/util.html). Run it once, and tick "associate cabinstl with CAB files". After that, you can just double-tap .cab files as usual, and cabinstl will appear. In the "Path" line, enter a directory on your SD card to extract the cab to it.
Additionally, there are a few other things you can try:
- there is a registry settings that contains the DLL path, i.e. a list of directories Windows Mobile will scan to find DLLs. If you add a directory on your SD card to that, you can move most of the big DLLs (not only TomTom's) to that directory. Use Resco Explorer for moving. If you don't want to da that manually, try MemMaid (http://www.dinarsoft.com), which can do that automatically.
Note: I found that moving Today Screen DLLs may cause problems, so you should leave them where they are.
- your Magician has more memory than you think. Try searching the forum for "Big Storage". This allows you to gain an internal flash area of 27 MB - large enough to install most programs there, which is exactly what I did.
Hope I could help you. My MDAc is as fast as ever, even with TomTom.
Cheers
Daniel

Hello XDA users....
I think you know it all, that the ROMkitchen is a fine application to get our device nearly perfect.
But the ROMkitchen is out of date. This means many applications aren´t not in the actual version. Therefore Auburnham and I thought to update the applications.
The problem is, that the amount of added applications to the kitchen is to big to make this happen by us two. Because of this problem I´m searching for some people, which wants to help.
Another problem is, that you need for this a device that haven´t got installed that piece of software. This means that when you want to help me with Phonext for example, you must have a device without any version of Phonext installed.
So, if you are going to help me make a snapshot of your device with the ssnap - Application.
Install the software.
Make again an Snapshot of your device with the ssnap - Application.
Send these two files to [email protected] with inforamtion about the program you have installed and the exact Version you have installed.
When I´ve got analyzed the two files i will reply to you with a wishlist of files that have been created on your device. After sending me the files, i can update the kitchen....
IF there are any quesions or anything else, feel free to contact me....
Regards
Stefan
Good Idea :
I'd be happy to contribute.
Tell me which application you want me to install and I'll do it provided that I find the procedure (that I've seen being posted elsewere in this forum).
NB : I'm using XDA I with a Frenchy 3.16 and be stuck with it  ; so there is no chance for me to re-build a new a geniun 3.16 Rom again.
My XDA is all up and running.
I've overcome my Language FRA error message after purchasing a SD card reader and loading the ROM through the bootloader. 8)
Now, I'm about to install ttn 3 on my XDA. Do you want list it in your kitchen ?
What do you need exactly ?
I would be happpy to help. I am a regular user of your site and appreciate the effort that has been put into it.
I understand the effort needed to keep things working and up to date.

I'm in!!
Just let me know what you need and when and I will maker every endevour to help.

I've sent these snapshots off to Stefan, along with the files that I thought might be necessary for these programs. This is going to be great for all of us, but a lot of work for Stefan. We all owe him a great deal, so take him out for a nice meal the next time you see him.

I don't want to make this any more complicated than it is, but for some programs, it just doesn't make any sense to install to the XDA memory. Most of the media players and "Misc" programs just take up too much unnecessary device memory when they would work just as well on the SD Card (if that's available).
The problem is that those huge programs require just a few small files to be placed on the device itself. So after installing a few of these types of programs, you've used up a lot of device memory from these small files, even though you installed the program to your SD Card.
Is there a way to alter the kitchen a bit to allow cooking of the necessary device files only, and allow the user to later install the program to the SD Card (being careful not to overwrite the files in ROM with files in RAM)?
For instance, with the TomTom program, if you start with a clean ROM and SD card, take a snapshot, then install the program to your SD card, then take another snapshot, you could determine what files need to be on the device, and what files don't need to be on the device, and allow users to either cook the entire program or just the necessary files in the ROM. (Note: This is a good example of a run-on sentence). Would this be a difficult feature to add to the kitchen?

Maybe the esiest Option is adding a new Select Point for the kitchen like "misc", "System Tools", "Phone" ....
This means having the programs double in the kitchen, but how cares.
I don't know exactly, but when you install a program to the SD-Card, could you select the part where to place it?
If yes, this could be a big problem. Many of the programs store the path in the registry.
If no, i could also provide a ZIP-file, where the rest of the programfiles are in, hust to unzip to the Storagecard.....

I believe this really depends on (1) how well the program was written, and (2) if you can install the program with CabInst (i.e. has a cab installation).
For example, I try to keep my SD Card organized and tidy so if I use CabInst I install the program to an appropriate folder on the SD Card. If I have to install the program from the desktop, I install the program to the SD Card root, then try to move the program to an appropriate folder and update the shortcut. Most of the time this works without even changing any registry entries, but sometimes it doesn't. Two examples from the above list of applications are AOL Instant Messenger 2.0 and Pocketmind PocketMusic 3.0. To function correctly, they both need to be in their original installation folders on the SD Card.
But perhaps the best solution would be to have an associated .zip file to go on the SD Card, as you suggested.
Shawn
Now the kitchen should be up 2 date again.
Only missing is PocketConsole and the Part "Software that needs to register"
So happy cooking and again Thx a lot to all users that helped me.....
Stefan
A Windows-way for cooking a ROM would be great for two reasons: 1) Don't hassle your server with lots of traffic and 2) Practical. Advanced users could cook a ROM without having a PC with Unix.
For example I tried cooking the Spanish version of the ROM and not all the programs I chose were installed and the worst thing is that the boot logo was just garbage, it was showing program code on the screen as a logo

Ok. Fixed the problem with the bootscreen.....
Tried also adding as much application, and all have been installed.
Can you tell me, what files / programs are missing?
No one else told me that there have been a problem wirth this ROM. I think it's because of the situation that most of the useres are using WM2003 ROMS....
You can also use the kitchen under "Windows" just have to set up a Cyguin environment on your system....
Also i didn't know how many Kitchen's are implemented by other users, but mine one is the only "official". You can't believe that everyone would be able to set it up.......
Stefan
Thanks Stefan!!!!!!
Now it seems to work but if EzWAP is selected, it throws a Log error when trying to cook...
Cheers,
Marton
P.S.: Do you know if a Spanish WM2003 exists?
Edit: This is the error:
Cannot fit files in given sections
Error splitting files
Just cooked a ROM... I selected the "Windows Mobile XDA" Boot Screen and now it is not garbage anymore but now it shows mirrored and upside down...
Any ideas?

Hello Marton.
I relaised that this is a problem with the Image.
This Image have been sent to me, and i ithink it's created wih the wrong parameters....
Stefan
I fiddled around with my extended rom this week.
Now I managed to get all my favourite apps in the ext-rom so in case of a hard-reset (especially when on holiday, do no PC around) I will get a decent config back.
Until now I did not manage to get a CAB file for TomTom.
TomTom comes in APK files, which seem to be some other type of archive. I guess there are 2 options:
1. Create a CAB from the TomTom APK files and put them in Extended rom
2. Find out the way to install from an APK file ON THE DEVICE
Anyone with hints/tips????
:?:
Hello,
the cab of TT are created during the installation of TT ( see in program files / Microsoft ActiveSync) . You can download the upgrade of TT, during he instllation, the cab are uncompressed. You can find after the Cab and save in the extended Rom.
@+
Sperli
Thanks, but this is what I guessed allready.
There is nothing TomTom like in the Progra Files/Microsoft Activesync directory.
I started setup again (it processed the APK files), but did not connect the MDAII. So whith next sync it will ask to install. That makes me conclude the CAB is somewhere on my PC.
When I look in the Registry, I find following under H-key-localmachine/software/microsoft/windows CE services/appmgr/apps/Tom Tom Navigator:
installdir -> c:\winnt\profiles\<username>\temp\navigator
listcabfiles -> navigator_eng.ppc3_arm.cab navigator_eng.ppc3_sh3.cab navigator_eng.ppc3_mips.cab
I think I only need the navigator_eng.ppc3_arm.cab
Gues the files should be in c:\winnt\profiles\<username>\temp\navigator then.
But it isnt . . . .
Should it be there only during the copy to the MDAII???
Anyone more clues?
FOUND IT!!!!
Just when the installer mentions the files will be installed at next sync, the CAB's are in the directory I mentioned.
TT3 after Hard Reset
Here you are the 3 necessary cab for TT3,
Gps, Nav and voice, english in this case.
Two of those are taken from the upgrade file 303.
Voice are english and it's from original cd.
Enjoy
Rups
ehm, thist this might be called illegal software now!!!!
i don't want that,
only a way to have it after hard reset...
Sorry, moderator can you come...
Rups
how can it be called illgal software now when......
it doesnt have the maps with it nor the activation code!
some people eh?
theis method of backing up sounds like a very good idea,
Tom Tom Navigator is essential to my job for finding my way around the country and i have had 2 occasions where it has crashed or hard reset whilst i was using it, I am not too worried about any of my other info but i need to be able to run TTN3 all the time,
My current method of ensuring i have always got a working copy is to carry another PPC (ipaq 2210) with another gps and another 256 meg sd card with a full install of TTN3 just in case i get into trouble, But this sounds like a much better and far more cost effective method !!
I will give this a try, I assume i just install my maps onto my SD card like i normally do and if i reinstall i just reactivate the new install to get it working again
Thanks guy...
In this case i wrote that the cab was extracted from the upgrade 303... normally find it at main tomtom site and free of charge...
Second the many voice files you can find free of charge on the internet...
Third my idea was having tt3 in any occasion... also after a hard reset...
Fourth No code or maps...
And than here we go...
Rups
Hi
I'm new to this loading stuff to the extened ROM business, but I like the sound of it.
In order to do this do I copy the CAB file anywhere in the pocket PC, i.e. my documents and then run it, or does it need to be copied to the extended ROM.
If it is copied to the extended ROM, do I then need to actually run the CAB file from the extended Rom after a hard reset in order to re-install it, or is it actually installed.
Finally what is unlocking the extended ROM tool required for?
Cheers
JustinP
please don't post software here.
By all means put the instructions, but the RTU for tomtom make it quite clear that it should not be dissasembled, distributed or made available without permission.
Hi folks,
Just got my Ameo, and am thrilled with it, just getting mildly frustrated with TT6. I copied all the files over to the MicroDrive and ran the cabs, installed to Device (also tried Microdrive) and ran TT. However, although the program seems to be working great, it won't see any voices installed. Any ideas? The Voices directory is in the same place as all the other TomTom files i.e. the root directory of the Microdrive. Thanks!
Fin
I found this problem initially - I think I ended up having to reinstall the cab with the voices in to get it working. Mine are now in \MicroDrive2\Voices
Either that, or a complete uninstall/reinstall did the trick.
N.B, I don't have two microdrives, WM5 got a bit confused and I think WM5torage didn't unload itself properly or something like that, and renamed the drive as 2. I've seen it before with SD Cards.
Thanks - on your advice managed to dig out my old copy of TT 4.4 as I knew it had separate cab files for voices. Installed the right one and Jane was happily talking to me again Thanks for the input! Shame it won't pick up all my other voices tho - I don't have a voices cab for TT6.
Fin
Ahh, I use the Auzzie Guy, just wish he used 'Mate' and 'Golar' and 'Barbie' and the like. I think the first "build" I used wasn't complete , but a second "downloaded build" did . Its v6.010 that I'm currently running.
had the same problem...
i found i had the same problem, this is what i did;
1- there is a voices directory on your phones memory, program files, navigator, voices, try copyin them from your microdrive to your phone memory
or
2- when you go to the voices section in the tomtom application, when it asks to 'only show english voices' select no.
my john cleese and yoda voices now appear, hope this helps.
TT
There are two type of installations.
1. Tou have the SD card installation version and
2. You have the PC installation version.
From TT 6 and upwards the PC installation version is disapearing. This version needed to see the voice files properly installaed. It used the registry to find the files. For this version you need to install the voice cabs form the source disks.
The SD card version looks at your storage card and searches for the voices directory. When this directory is there and you cannot see te voice files, delete the collected.ini file. When you start up TT again it will search for voice files.
Still there is a possibility you cannot see them. I had this probem because I have an miniSD card in my devices. I noticed that TT had made several directories on the card including the voices directory with the file collected.ini. Throwing away the TT directories on my miniSD card solved my problem.

I don't think you need to reinstall your programs. Try doing a soft reset. I have encountered the Microdrive2 thing before (but not because of WM5Storage), and a soft reset restored everything back to normal.
Looks like something created a folder called MicroDrive on my main storage (its got mail inbox folder in it), and hence the real MicroDrive got renamed to MicroDrive2.
I wonder if real MicroDrive stopped working for a little while and hence device automatically created a new MicroDrive folder on main storage.
Soft resets did not fix it, however renaming the MicroDrive folder to something else, on main storage, and then a soft reset, and real MicroDrive got renamed back to normal.
Will post if it happens again, but at least have found a simple way to fix it if it happens again.
I believe you have enabled the Messaging plugin in your Today screen? That is the most likely culprit, based on my past experiences.
That makes sense, I disabled message plugin to take some screen shots, and then re-enabled it.
Reading on TomTom I remember running across an article that recommended deleting some INI file for TomTom which would cause TomTom to rescan for voices. This was a common problem. I think it's on the TomTom support site. I can't really remember where I read it though.
I had this problem.
Ensure TT is closed
Move the VOICES folder and ZIP (if you have the 7 digit postal code) from the route of the SD card to \program files\navigator and restart.
Problem solved.
---
If you want to keep the files on the SD card (which is slower) then delete the collected.ini file at \program files\navigator\voices , and also the voices folder from there, and it will re-search for them, hopefully finding them on the SD card
Is there a hawaii map for tomtom6???
I got one for 5, but can't get it to work on the 6...

Tomtom and voice
Hi
To solve this problem follow this steps
explore the device's staorage area where you copied the Tomtom (whether Microdrive or Mini Sdcard)
Inside there you will see the Tomtom folder and the map folders.
open the Tomtom folder and cut the Voice folder and Paste on to the same drive's Root.
Eg: Device/microdrive or Device/storagecard
Do the same for the Zip folder which is also inside the tomtom folder.
Basically Tomtom only looking for the voice and zip files from root of the Storage card, Microdrive and my documents folder of the Device.
You have to choose where to put it.
Good luck guys
Managed to install tomtom navigator on my TD2 but i think im missing the 7 digit postcode file as im only able to search using the first part of the post code.....ive tried this fix with no luck,
http://www.tomtom.com/support/category.php?ID=1&Language=1&query=postcode&FID=9852
anyone else have this problem? and resolved it?
Which TT do you have installed? 6 or 7?
Can't seem to get 6 working on my Topaz. After instal it keeps giving me a memory access violation message.
Any tips?
i think that map has to be a compatible one as well to work with the full postcode but not sure
you need to have a ZIP folder in the root of where your map is.
eg i have great britain on my sd card so there is a folder called ZIP in the root of the card with 2 files - Great_Britain.Postal (8.4mb) and SETUP.DAT (306b)
can't remember where I got those files, gpsunderground I think

What version of TomTom?
I have just ordered a MicroSD card my my D2 and am looking to install TomTom. What version did you use?
What do you think of TomTom as a sat nav on WM6? I know there are some other funky packages out there such as CoPilot and Navigon, but I'm not sure which is the best. I use a standard TomTom which I quite happy with, but I'm always on the look out for new stuff.
This is my first foray into a WM device, so I'm interested to see what it can do.
Full Postcode Entry on TT6/7
Thought I'd post my solution as I tried others in this post with no luck. I copied the zip folder to: my windows mobile based device/program files/navigator and : my windows mobile based device/storage card.
This does the trick on my HTC P3600. Cheers, Chris.

I've tried copied it to the folder with the maps in, the root folder of the sd card, the folder with tomtom installation in it too. No luck at all. Does the map name have to be the same or something :S?

This worked for me on TT 7.9 on Xperia X1 with Pure 6.5 SEX1 ROM.
Postcodes in full! Thanks!
I used this link

Then took out the 2 GB files from the zip folder, created a file called Zip in the folders (as quoted above), and pasted them into the Zip file.
Hi
Thanks for reading this. I have an MDA Touch and have been experiencing the bugs that I didn't know existed when I bought it! My camera doesn't even work now
I don't know anything about this but I have Tomtom on my phone and don't want to lose it. Will it be wiped if I install a new ROM?
All the files for it are on the memory card.
if all the files are on the memory card you won't lose it. the only thing you've got to do after installing a new ROM - a new shortcut for TomTom
at least in my case^^

Hi Tod!
welcome @ XDA!
the anwer of reppi is ok...what I recommend you to do is after you've hard resetted your phone OR you've installed a new ROM, just find the install file on your internal storage (mostly an.exe file or .cab file) and install that to your device memory...that should do the trick...dont create any shortcuts....
TomTom will do that automatically for you
Cheers
Jeroen
I agree with the first answer, although TomTom will put the shortcut in place I find it much easier to put a new shortcut on. It's as easy as selecting 'copy' on your TomTom app on your storage card, and then going to \Windows\Start Menu\Programs\ and selecting Paste Shortcut from the menu - job done! (although you might want to rename the new shortcut as it will be 'Shortcut to TomTom Navigator lol)
