Hi,
I have an O2 XDA Exec with the latest ROM version, on an Orange Pay Monthly SIM.
Anyway, im having two annoying problems with it;
Firstly, every now and then, if you have a few programs open and close them all, it wont go back to the Today page!! It will just keep the image of the last application on the screen! Today wont even come up if you goto Start > Today. Everything else works fine though, can open any programs etc from the Start Menu :?:
Secondly, the phone signal is rubbish!!! My old SPV C600 had no problems with signal (also running WM5), this one has low signal/looses signal all the time! And after a while it will just stop searching for signal, so i have to go to settings and tell it to search again!!! I constatly have errors trying to send messages due to no signal, and cant make calls due to no signal!! Also i dont recieve texts alot aswell! Which is un-acceptable from a device that is meant to be a "mobile phone"
Any ideas to solve?! Please help me!!
Thanks

Hey Matt
what are your ROM versions? especially interesting in this case would be the Radio version. I think people round here have mentioned that different Radio versions have different signal reception levels.
I am using the O2 XDA 1.30 version with stock radio 1.00.09 and basically the reception's fine. There have been some comparisons on this forum as to different radio versions strengths and weaknesses.
Hi very similar to me, I switched off the 3G usage so it only uses 2G and everything was perfect again.
Now I only use 3G as and when I need it.
The problem as I see it, is that if there is a 3G signal, which in Orange's case appears to be nearly all the time the phone sticks with 3G even thought the signal strength isnt good enough fo voice, but is good enough for data (mainly because you tend not to be walking around) because of this the switching between 2G and 3G doesnt take place, hence no calls
Since swtiching of 3G my phone operations have been perfect.
I switched my Radio ROM from 1.03 (Orange Default) to 1.09 and noticed an improvement. Where I had no signal, it would flick between a signal with no bars and 1 bar with the 1.09 ROM.
I switched my Radio ROM from 1.03 (Orange Default) to 1.09 and noticed an improvement. Where I had no signal, it would flick between a signal with no bars and 1 bar with the 1.09 ROM.
As soon as i got the XDA i upgraded it to the latest O2 Rom, which has 1.09 Radio Rom... so i dont have anything to compare to!!
Any more suggestions?
turn off 3G if you dont need it.
send it back, you may have a loose connection.
are you saying a bad connection 100% of the time? ie you never have full bars?
Ok i'll try turning the 3G off (seeing as my SIM doesnt have 3G capability anyway! lol) How do i go about doing that?!
I do get full signal in places yes, its just the signal is utter crap on this phone compared to all of my past ones! Compared to an SPV C500 & C600 its rubbish!
start - settings - phone - band
change to your standard not auto. probably gsm rather than cdma.
do you get a bad reception with4 bars?
either way, I must say I have no problem with phone, but acknowledge many report poor phone performance.

Hi all,
I'm currently experiencing a problem where my Softbank X01ht drops off the cellular network because I live in a low strength area, and takes forever, if at all, to automatically connect back to the network, even if I move into an area where I know the cellular strength is high.
If I manually turn off the phone portion of the hermes, and reconnect, then it happily detects the cellular network and connects. In other words, after disconnecting, it acts as though there is no network in range at all, even though I know there is.
This seems to have started after I upgraded my radio rom to version 1.20 from 1.07. Prior to the upgrade, I know it connected back to the network quite quickly after it dropped out. Has anyone else experienced this with the 1.20 Radio Rom? I currently have the Imate jasjam rom installed on my phone with the 1.04 bootloader.
Unsure if this is related, but the area that I live in has a weak UMTS network, but a relatively decent GPRS network. I'm thinking the phone is getting confused over which network to connect too.
It also seems that if I'm in an area with a pretty strong cellular strength, it doesn't drop out? Would I benefit from downgrading to the 1.16 Radio Rom?
Thanks in advance all.
Gene
I can also confirm that things added with that after a soft reset sometime it cant detect network..i have to manualy turn off/on the radio part....generelly it occures if i reset the set just after making a call or just getting disconnected from edge...
the previous 2 radio that i used 1.16 and 1.08 didnt suffer from those probs...
but the main benifit of 1.20 radio that i get is EDGE speed i can pump upto 220Kb (22-24 KB) download speed in flat when connected to pc as wireless modem but with the previous radios i can barely go 160Kb and the speed did uped/down regularly...
and somewhat strange with this 1.20 radio i cant search for network list manually when even i go to manual in network after sometime i get cant read error...but previous radios where ok in that par too...
and the last benifeat that i get with 1.20 is now the SIM STK menu is working.....

Thanks sajib,
Glad I'm not the only one experiencing it. For me, however, it only occurs when it looses connection to the cellular network. After every soft reset so far, it has connected to the cellular network automatically. To me it doesn't seem to even search for the network. That is, after loosing connection, it is resigned to the fact that it can't connect to a network, so doesn't even try, unless I force it too. I think I have seen it connect automatically once or twice, but either way, it takes at least 10-20 minutes, sometimes it never connects, and I force a manual reconnect by turning off the phone and turning it back on. So is this a known problem with the 1.20 Radio Rom?
Try this...
I had the same problem on my TyTn. Took forever to WiFi connect. Then I found this registry setting:
[HKLM\Comm\TIACXWLN1\Params]
"dot11ShortPreambleInvoked"=dword:00000001
Now my WiFi time-to-connect seems much faster.

Hi!
Thanks for the advice, but mine isn't a Wifi problem, but a problem with connecting to the cellular network.
Or do you think that your connecting to the WiFi network and the cellular network are one in the same?
i am using the 1.20 radio as well, but cant say that i have had any of the said problems... i have the cingular 8525 and have used the 2 latest cingular roms, the aku2.3 and 2.6.. but i did have some of the same problems with i used cingulars 1.16 radio

Do you commonly get cellular network disconnects? I find that if I'm moving around the city or driving around in the car, the network connection is maintained, and sometimes will automatically find the network if it does get disconnected. However, it is only when I am home that the phone disconnects and doesn't try to reconnect once it has been disconnected.
Any idea of what might have caused this issue with you with the 1.16 Radio Rom? Possibly something to do with the AKU version? I'm using AKU 2.3.
Thanks,
Gene

I too have the original problem but have not upgraded the radio ROM. I have the T-Mobile Vario II (sorry not sure what ROM that is) but often when I move from an area of either very weak or no signal to an area with a signal (coming out of a shielded building) I too get the same problem. Initially the phone shows weak (or even strong) signal strength but when I try to make a call I get the box up on the phone screen telling me it cannot connect. I have found that eventually it will, when left to it's own devices, get itself sorted out and allow a connection. But it is invariably quicker turing off the phone (via comm manager) then back on - this always results in a valid connection.
Perhaps the problem that you describe is not related just to the 1.20 Radio ROM upgrade?

Hi Tony,
It could possibly be an application or the ROM itself causing the problem, however, I think its the radio rom in my case, simply because this problem only started occuring after I upgraded to the 1.20 Radio Rom. Previously on the 1.07 Radio rom, the phone would connect automatically and immediately. Also I just performed a hard reset after I discovered this problem, and it still seems to be occurring...
I also am sure that after a long while the phone reconnects, I have seen it try reconnect a couple of times. But then again, a couple of times I've left it for 10-30 minutes, and it hasn't reconnected. Unsure of exactly how it chooses to reconnect and when it tries to reconnect. You would think it would try reconnect constantly after a specified period, but in my case it seems very random.

i actually get pretty solid coverage whether moving or stationary. especially at home since i live not a quarter mile from a cingular tower and i dont think its necessarily related to the aku version since i have gotten the same result with either 2.3 or 2.6. But i can say for sure that the cingular 1.16 radio is junk my biggest complaint was gsm calls cutting out and on my calls on 3G had a very weird digitized background noise, kinda sounded like a bad digital echo... 1.20 fixed all of that for me

When I'm roaming around my connection always seems to be sustained. e.g, I've been checking my phone ever 1hour for about 24 hours, and have yet to see my signal lost. Is it possible that the phone is getting confused over which band to connect to? As I said in my first post, I have a relatively weak 3G/UMTS signal from my home (1-2 bars), and a relatively strong GPRS signal (3-4 bars). Presumably the phone is UMTS-preferred, and uses GPRS as a secondary.
I saying this, even if I go to another area which usually has 5 bars UMTS signal, I haven't seen the phone immediately connect. This was after about 10-15minutes waiting in that area.

yes, the phone is set to prefer the UMTS bands.. have you tried setting the band manually instead of it letting it autosearch? you can do it in the phone settings menu or use the app listed here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=286844
Recently my Vario II intermittenly loses network signals, it says No Network and I have to toggle phone off/on to make it search for signal again. This only happens when I'm at home (Charlton SE7 area).
Rom 1.21.110.3 (19/06/06)
Radio 1.05.05.00
Does anyone have the same problem?

Flash HardSPL first, then upgrade your radio.
Ive linked to my guides incase your unfamiliar with the process.
The newer radio should possibly increase your GSM efficiency. Are you in a decent area for reception?

Hi, many thanks for your detailed guides. I've upgraded Radio to 1.38.00.10 but the problem still persists. I'm in a very good coverage area, always get full bars 3G when it works. Soft-reset my phone and now it's searching in vain for network signal, I'm confused
What operator are you with ? Maybe the cell where you live is getting overloaded. We had a problem similiar to this last month when our local base station had a problem. Our work-around was to disable 3G but not using a Hermes . Apparently the handset tries to register using the 'best' data-bearer its configured for. So disabling 3G made it register with GPRS which worked fine. They then fixed the base station and we were able to re-enable 3G. I would
guess Charlton would have a lot of subscribers per cell. You would expect the coverage to be better in a built-up areas but who knows. Maybe an enquiry/ complaint to the operator would at least tell you if they know of a problem and if its temporary or longer term
Cheers for that. I'm with T-Mobile. What's bugging me is that this signal disappearance only happens sometimes. It's not that I don't have 3G (or signal for that matter) at all, I still get full 3G signals fine most of the time. But you probably were right, looks like it's a fault from the operator's cell in the area, I will give them a call next week to see if there's an explanation.
I've noticed this problem when I'm in the south London area (very general I know). People have got around the issue temporarily by forcing the phone to GPRS only
More problems! After upgrading to 1.38 and trying all sort of "good" radios like 1.17, 1.27, 1.34 I can't make/receive calls unless GSM is forced. There must be something wrong within my immediate area because with the same radios everything works flawless just 10 mins down the road. I just called TMob and there's no technical fault or anything from their side. I will just have to put up without 3G until the problem fixes itself
There are lots of people complaining about 3g on T mobile in UK. They seem to have serious issues with Hermes devices and the dropdown to GSM.
I had a problem six months ago with my hermes on orange at home in SW London. For a few weeks it was mucking about - I rang O who advised me that they were experiencing some local issues but would fix them within days. I switched to GSM for a few days. When I switched back its worked fine for last five months.
3G gone mad!
the same thing was happening to me. Full 3G reception in Leicester, tried to connect to get my e-mails and then the signal totally goes. The same thing happens when I make calls as well. Switched to GSM and everything worked. Now in York and everything is working on 3G.
Network is T-Mobile.
This sounds similar to the issues I am having.
Do you get the phone hanging as it attempts to start a call and then after a while a message stating that it was unable to connect?....sometimes resulting in a soft reset to bring the device back online? In my case toggling bluetooth will reset the connection.
I am with T-Mobile in Glasgow but get the same issues during the day in Edinburgh
No 3G

No mine doesn't say anything, it sounds "ding ding" after a few secs like when you press the hang up button. I can use the Internet but anything to do with calls is just impossible. I've switch to GSM now and everything's back to normal. A bit annoying can't use 3G at home.
Hi all, apologies for posting this, as there I know there's tons of other threads relating to this matter - I've spent quite some time reading (and being confused!) by them, but I can't seem to find a thread which a) has someone describing the exact problem I have, or b) giving a definitive solution. So here it is:
I have a UK MDA Vario II. It's my second one (replaced under warranty), this, and my first one both had a problem where I would seemingly randomly not receive calls or texts. The phone shows it has a signal, and the green light would be flashing to indicate service. However, on occasions, if you try to ring the phone, it diverts straight to voicemail. Sometimes service resumes normally (about an hour later) and I get a message informing me of my missed calls, and sometimes I have to do a soft reset to get it working again.
What I have gathered from reading on these forums is that I may need to upgrade my radio - it had version 1.05.02.00 on it (which it must have been shipped with).
So - following instructions, I put HardSPL 2.10 on to the device, then flashed the Radio ROM to version 1.47.30.10, deciding that this looked the safest bet based on the feedback of other people on the Forum. Having done this (last night) I decided to test the phone once per hour today by just calling it, and I only got to the second test before it failed again - showing signal and green light flashing - but calls going straight to voicemail.
So - I don't want to do any damage to the phone - but I need to know that when someone's calling me, it's going to ring (we're moving house soon, so I'm relying on certain calls from solicitors, bank etc etc). Can anyone tell me of a reliable Radio ROM version for an MDA Vario II on T-Mobile UK? (which won't introduce further problems!)
THANKS!!

Ive never had any problems with calls not connecting, the only times it has failed is due to poor reception and ofcourse network busy errors.
I wouldnt worry about the radio version it sounds like a network issue. Have enabled 3G on it??

I have (and thanks btw - it was your guides that I followed attempting the flash last night). The thing is, a good friend of mine has the same phone, in the same area - and he doesn't get these issues. My other half is also on T-Mobile, but uses a Sony Ericsson and doesn't have any problems with coverage. I'm in a city centre right now, and my house isn't far out - we both have decent reception there.
In fact - an interesting thing just happened (literally..) - I have my phone on a charging cradle, and it had been dormant for a while, so the screen was off. It woke up, as if about to receive a call or text, but then nothing happened... so I called myself from my office phone - and it connected ok.
About 5 minutes later my girlfriend called me up on the mobile, and I mentioned the issue was still there - and she said 'yeah, i tried to call you about 5 minutes ago'.... so it's like the call was received (i.e. the phone new about it), but it didn't complete the process.
I had thought a new radio version might help (from my very limited understanding of such matters) - are you saying that's not the case?
Does 3G affect this too? What can I do - I use the internet more than anything else on my phone....
Thanks
does anyone have any further advice on this?
Mr Vanx? Anyone??
My phone is still randomly losing signal - generally not accepting incoming calls (though today it was not accepting calls, whilst I was still able to make them...). I think I may go and get it replaced by T-Mobile - but I have upgraded the radio to 1.47.30.10, and have put HardSPL 2.10 onto it.
I guess I need to downgrade to original versions, but I can't seem to find a guide which tells me if what I want to do is OK (and how...).
Please - can anyone assist - I believe my original radio rom was 1.05.05.00, and the SPL version was 1.01.
I'm using 1.54.30.10 and it's fine. I found 1.54.00.10 pretty good as well. Much fewer dropped calls comparing to any 1.4x RadioROMs. Signal strenght is also better. The only thing I cannot comment on is the battery life, as I charge the phone every night whether it's 90% or 10%.

did you have the same problems as me? - phone appearing to have a signal but calls being diverted to voicemail... seemingly randomly...
Use GSM mode as default
I have the exact same problem (I travel between Birmingham and London mainly) on my Vario II. It is really fustrating and my wife seems to think I dont answer her calls/txts on purpose(!)
On mine, the problem is due to the 3G mode - when I turn OFF 3G and use normal GSM the problem goes away. I get all calls/txt and internet connections sucessfully. When I turn on 3G the problem comes back - lost calls and unsucessfull internet connections. When in 3G mode sometimes it works somtimes it doesnt
Someone mentioned it could be that it is not switching between 3G and GSM automatically when no 3G is available. However, it happens even when in a good strong 3G area.
I swear this problem did not happen in the early part of my contract but only recently. One theory is that TMobile has sold so many 3G devices now both monthly and pay-as-you-go (esp 3G Data Modems with users using the network for their laptops) that the TMobile cells are just getting overloaded. Also, it could be that TMobile are also doing an upgrade of the 3G network and it is causing problems for users.
So what I do is run the phone in GSM mode as default (so no missed calls/txt and use Opera Mini for quick web surfing works well in GSM mode) Then switch on 3G mode if I am going to do any web surfing for more then 5 mins.
The added side benefit is also much much better battery life in GSM mode (3G soaks up the juice very quickly). I never use video calls ect so no loss there.
My Comm Manager has a toggle for 3G/GSM mode so I use that to quickly change between the 2 modes.
In Summary I would rather have a reliable phone for recieving/making calls then one which is hit and miss.
btw, Im now due an upgrade - wondering if I should stay with TMobile or not...
We appear to have the same phone 'lives'!

Ditto - im due for upgrade in March, and had been looking at the Vario iii - but am now wondering if I should be looking at another network? Is this a consistent problem with all 3G devices on T-Mobile - or does it just affect the Vario ii?

Same here - we're in the middle of selling 2 properties and buying another one, so I could really do with not having the phone playing up.
I've tried this today, and have been testing the phone on an hourly basis - so far so good.
Spot on - this definitely was not a problem when I signed up (Nov 06).
Do you know where I can get a reliable version of Opera Mini?
I dont have this option in mine? How can I get it??

I signed up in Sep 06 and there was no problem with 3G mode then (problem free for the first 12 months at least).
From your phone internet rowser goto http://mini.opera.com/ and click on Download Opera Mini (this is latest version 4).
Before you do this make sure you have Esmertec Jbed midlet manager installed (Opera Mini is a Java App).
I use Opera Mini 90% of the time and its still renders fast on a GSM connection.
Ive uploaded the CABs for you for the Midlet Manager and Comm Manager.
I dont know if it only affects the VarioII maybe others can comment. If its a network issue then I would expect it affecting other devices also.
I want to go for the HTC Touch Dual (aka MDA Touch Plus on TMobile) as my next phone but may go with Orange if it is a network issue. Only reason I stay with TMobile is for the 'unlimited' web'n walk tarrif..but if I can't use 3G realiably then what is the point?

Thanks very much for loading this stuff...
my other half is after the touch plus too - but have advised her to do some research before committing to T-Mob again.... though if she gets it and it's ok, i'll post some feedback on here...
Cheers
The Touch Plus is a good phone if you can live without Wifi...Ive read somewhere that this problem is dependant on the area you are in ...in particular the TMobile cell tower servicing the area you are in and it is possible to phone TMobile tech support to get an engineer to investigate and correct the problem. In my case that would be my home address and my work address - maybe worth a try?
Just to add my 2p worth... my radio is 1.05.05.00 (came on the phone, which was a replacement for the first which had the screen drift)... I've had occasional times when the phone's lit up but nothing's happened, but I usually chalk that down to the phone doing an activesync check for push mail, and as there's nothing there, it goes back to sleep.
To my knowledge, I've not really missed any calls or anything like that since way back last year - when sometimes I'd be sitting in the same café as a mate also on T-Mobile, and we'd do the you-call-me-i-call-you thing to get each others' numbers - and it'd go straight to voicemail! That was quite amusing.
Nobody's told me that they've had problems trying to reach me on my mobile though for a fair while now, so I'd almost completely forgotten about this problem!
edit: yay, 500th post! Took a while but got there eventually... Anybody want to sponsor me with a free Kaiser?

Can anyone tell me of a reliable Radio ROM version for an MDA Vario II on T-Mobile UK? (which won't introduce further problems!)
THANKS!!

Hi, I confess I haven't read the thread in great deal (am in a rush and am just passing through!) but you could try this official T-Mobile UK ROM. It's Windows Mobile6 and Radio 1.50.xxx (as far as I remember). The main thing is that it's official, and includes their latest sanctioned bootloaders etc. I flashed it to mine before taking back for warranty (as it's not possible to go back to the old 1.05 radio from recent unauthorised versions).
T-Mobile UK WM6 complete MDA Vario II ROM:

sim
:O when did that become available? I swore to myself I'd keep an eye on the TM phone downloads site because I knew WM6 was available for some devices, but I completely forgot and since then they've rolled out WM6 for my phone... Which is a proper pain, but at the same time a really nice surprise.
Hard reset your device, install ALL applications on the phone (nothing on the micro SD - except outlook attachments). This should solve the problem.

Why dig up this old thread and answer a question that has probably long since been resolved?

you should check and find its at http://forum.xda-developers.com/wiki/index.php?title=Hermes_ExtractedRadioRoms
I am using a 7500 in London England and WM 6 (though it was the same under WM5). It is also the same if I switch a SIM from O2 to 3.
When I come from a place of zero GSM or 3G signal, such as leaving the underground train and coming to the surface, the phone refuses to pick up any signal again. This has never happened with other WM phones I have had - I also use the TyTN II for example, which is just fine.
I can wait for hours, but it refuses to locate another signal. I have to shut down the phone, then start it up again. In fact, there is plenty of signal.
It is starting to get annoying.
Anyone with experience of this? Any solutions?
thanks

What Radio do you have installed
There are links to radio 1.57 and 1.58 on the following page which seem to have improved phone reception and battery life
http://forum.xda-developers.com/forumdisplay.php?f=353
Remember to back up your files as this resets the rom
thanks for that. I have radio 1.50 at the moment so I'll see if this improves things.

Hi All, I have been reading the forum with great interest and trying to amass information so hopefully I can avoid sounding like a numpty when I ask a question, here goes;
I have an X1 on O2 UK and an unlocked Touch HD and both seem to have the same difficulty sustaining an EDGE data connection.
At work for example the phone is showing 2 bars of EDGE, as soon as I start using the phone even if its not data related the data symbol changes to G so assumedly my data speed drops, I dont know because I've never got the phone to sustain EDGE long enough to see if its any faster.
Can this be fixed with a particular ROM or does no one else experience it? Network is O2 UK.
Also I read on another thread you can only change your radio on a Pre-release X1i, is this true and what does it mean exactly? sorry, probably a newbie question.
Changing your radio means updating the Radio ROM version that looks after GSM, Bluetooth, wifi and FM... basically anything received or transmitted by radio. If you go use one of the official SE update ROMS from this thread...
http://forum.xda-developers.com/forumdisplay.php?f=471
... then your Radio ROM will be updated along with all the other ROM and OS files on your phone.
I have a similar problem with O2 and my X1. I may be lucky to get a H (HSDPA connection) for a couple of seconds, but the phone drops and attempts to reconnect the phone completely, GSM, GPRS and 3G. It also has trouble staying locked onto O2. I have a dual SIM adapter and my Orange SIM can go a whole day without dropping while the O2 one will drop 4-5 times a day.
I'm tempted to call up O2 and request a new SIM as my O2 SIM is getting quite old (about 5 years now). I'm wondering if these new specifications require updated SIMs.
Don't believe everything the bars/icon says! My X1i shows EDGE, but when surfing changes to 3G or sometimes H for a few seconds while actually downloading stuff. The H doesn't stay on to save battery, but everythings fast. (download something to test the speed, e.g. SPB Wireless shows 760kbit/s)
