I am considering swopping my UK T-Mobile SIM for O2.
I have SIM unlocked my MDA Compact, but is there any issues with using an O2 SIM in a T-Mobile ROM Compact? For example GPRS settings, voicemail numbers etc, can these be changed in settings?
Thanks,
Mike.
this is no problem, I do it regularly, depending on wether i get t-mobile signal or not. As long as you have the settings in there for O2 you should be fine.
Voicemail number should be automatically taken from the sim, I've never had to program that in at all! If you need the settings, the're bound to be here somewhere.
If not, try http://www.modaco.com/Smartphone_Settings_Repository-f138.html for the settings.
Or god forbid *shudder* call o2!!
Cheers

Hi all,
Congrats for the nice forum. I got my MDA compact sim free recently which I used with my Vodafone UK sim card and it worked fine. However I have signed a new contract on 3G UK in Phones4you where I was convinced by the dealer that the sim card can be used to another sim free phone apart from the 3G Nokia 6680 I have taken. It seems that this was not true because when I insert the sim card in the MDA it says "Ivalid Sim Card" and I can't use it now. Do you know any way I could manage my problem? Any advice is appreciated. Thank you very much.
I'm interested in this too. I have considered switching to the 3 network but that fact that you have to use their phones has thus far put me off.

Yes, they have good price plans, but I am really disappointed cause I can't use my MDA. Their sim cards seem to be locked and unfortunately I have no idea whether there is any way to make it suitable to non-3G phones.
The dealer lied.
3 will not allow non 3G phones because it involve cost to them. Three roam to O2's GSM (2G and 2.5G) when you are out of range of the 3 network and that costs them money. If you have a 2.5G phone like the Magician then it will be permanently roamed to O2 and they would make no money from you becasue they would be billed by O2 for your calls.
Don't forget you get a "cooling off" period on these contracts. Might be worth using it.
MDA Compact is not a UMTS phone! I think it couldn't operate in 3G networks! Correct me if I'm wrong.

Are you sure?! This is very strange! Are you talking about Orange in Israel?!
Thank you all for the replys, it seems that unfortunately in UK it would be impossible to use 3G card on the MDA. As the 6680 has nothing in common with the MDA I hope my bills to compensate the inconvenience
3G
Using a non umts phone like the magician to connect to a umts network seems to me a very strange and bad idea.
Wait until next year (not so long) and buy the HTC Hermes or the XDA version : it's a S110 with the features of a QTEK 9100 and umts and wifi and ....

Yeah, an Israeli Orange sim card works OK on my Magician.
of course I couldn't use any 3G services...
3 is a UMTS-only network. All 3G phones in the UK are dual-mode GSM/UMTS phones.
Because the 3 network does not cover enough of the UK it has an arrangement with O2 so that 3 phones will 'roam' to O2 when out of 3 coverage. When they do this they use O2's GSM network. So, a GSM phone with a 3 USim would be permanently roamed to O2 as I said earlier.
An Orange USim will work in an Orange GSM phone. Orange (in the UK) have a GSM Network and are rolling out a UMTS network. When an Orange phone is out of reach of the Orange UMTS network, it simply uses the Orange GSM network instead. Now if you put a usim into an Orange GSM phone, it simply accesses the Orange GSM network and can't see the UMTS one. Oh and it will be able to use the 2.5G GPRS system as well.
A bit wordy but I think it's clear.
also remember folks thats "3" use a 5volt sim card unlike every other uk network that still use the old 3volt cards.
There is big problem with my XDA Exec, when I dial a tel No. it is Dailling and the Call end. The 3G sim card is work well on another mibile, and another GSM sim card is work well on the Exec, but the O2 3G sim card can not work on my Exec, could anyone give me some advice on in, thanks.
If you have a Data only plan then you may not be able to make calls. I think you need to ask O2 to activate voice calls. I have the same problem, but I only use my Exec for web & email as I don't trust it to operate as a phone!

Thanks
But the problem is that the 3G sim card can be uesd on another mobile for any voice call.
I will try to ring o2 for some solution.
I have ring O2, but they can do nothing and will change another sim card for me.
The 3G sim card can be used on my Moto V3, dial and receive
The normal GSM sim card can be used on Exec, dial and receive
But the 3G sim card can not be used on the Exec, can not dial can not receive, anyone can help me with that.
Thanks in advance
mobile, which tariff/plan do you have? If you have a Data plan and you can use your 3G SIM in another 3G phone (I don't have an unlocked one that I can use) then I may have a faulty SIM as well
jah
My tariff is 200 cross network, everything is ok for last noght.
I have change the sim card with mu V3, now all working. maybe it is the problem with the 3G option
the problem was solved.
I change the network to GSM, then everything is fine. It that means there is some proble with o2 3G netword?? :?:
My M5000 has been unlocked by the code which orange provided.
it doesn't accept O2 sim cards. it shows 'no service'.(I have tried two o2 sim cards, same problem).
However, I tried vodafone, orange and 3 sim cards. all are working perfectly on it.
Why is only o2 not?
why???????????????
any ideas?
Thank you very much.
hm crazy idea: There is no O2 net reachable. thats the only reason i could think of.
Re: M5000 unlocked, but doesn't accept o2 sim, why??????????
Do those O2 sims work in other devices, apart from the exec and the original phone they were in?
Just a though..... type of SIM perhaps?
AFAIK O2 only permit access to their 3G network with a USIM.
Voda permit any SIM to access their 3G network
3 only have USIMs
So maybe it's a GSM O2 SIM in a phone that's looking for a 3G signal?
Try the following:
Phone -> Settings -> Band -> Select your network type = Auto (or GSM if Auto does not work). Also ensure that GSM Band is set to EGSM+DCS1800
Cheers, Mark.
the sim cards I used are all working on normal phone.
and I have tried changing setting. it doesn't help anything.
I really don't know why.
So the O2 SIMs don't work even if you have Network Type set to GSM?
Cheers, Mark

Doubt it. IMEI's have to be specifically, individually blocked, they can't block a range of numbers and all use the same database in Dublin, so blocked by one = blocked by all UK providors.

M5000 Unlocked
Hi,
I got my M5000 unlocked from Orange for the O2 Sim (PAYG) and it worked fine. It's not 3G just normal GPRS connection.
What does it say when you reset the device? I'm running a ghost dual simcard with Orange/O2 and sim switcher software. The software recognises Orange but says "Invalid Sim" for O2, but it still works.
Get back onto Orange, you did pay them £20 for a service :?

I have tried even hard reset, it still didn't accept o2 card.
Do you mean it must run o2 with sim switcher software?
Where can I get such software?
Cheers

Bumping it just under 12 hours later is rude IMO. Don't.

M5000 Unlock
Hi all,
Sorry for the delay, been off line a couple of days.
First of all marquis the phone should work on all networks without the sim changing software, the software just saves you from reseting the phone everytime you need to change networks. I got the software from www.wivit.com and it's called "Sim Status Switcher" works great.
One thing I remember from orange saying when I got my phone unlocked was that you had to insert the other network sim and only had one chance at entering the code.
Lonlyboy2003, the number for Orange UK customer services is 00447802092150, I don't know if they'll be able to help as you need to be a registed customer and have a contract with them, but it's worth a go!
trmkwm, you need to phone Orange and for £20 GBP they will send you an unlock code for your phone.
Hope that helps
Yohanson
How do I go about converting my T-mobile USA MDA to Cingular 8125??
I currently have the latest rom that was downloaded from t-mobile's website.
I am very new to this so any help will be appreciated!
Thanks again!
The 8125 has a different case and keyboard, so you won't be converting your MDA to anything. I think your saying that you will be using your MDA on Cingular's network.
First, you need to unlock your phone. Carriers lock phones so you can't use competitors' SIM cards. Search this forum for Lokiwiz, a program that unlocks your phone.
After inserting your Cingular SIM card, call Cingular and ask them for their data network settings. After changing the settings, you're done!
Phone is unlocked already...I did that about a week ago. I maily need cingular settings on my phone. like sms and gprs and also Internet.
This is why i just wanted to upgrade my rom to cingular 8125 rom if that is possible. becaus if i do that then I wont have to chagne any settings (at least that's what I think) but i m probably wrong.
Let me know when you get a momento!
Thank you!

As long as you have CID unlocked it, you can use the Cingular ROM.
What do you mean by CID unlocked???
I can put my cingular simcard in my phone and it works fine...does that mean my CID is unlocked???
It just means that your phone is SIM unlocked. Do a search of the forums for a how to CID unlock. This will allow you to put any of the other carrier's ROMs on your MDA including the Cingular one. However, you don't really need to put the Cingular ROM on your MDA. I have an 8125 and use it for my Cingular post-paid plan. I also have a T-Mo prepaid SIM that I use occasionally. I have different GPRS settings that I use to connect to the T-Mo GPRS data service and everything works fine. It sounds like you just need to alter your GPRS settings to register on the Cingular network.
I purchased a 2nd hand o2 xda exec on ebay, and put my old o2 SIM in it but it constantly says searching. At first I thought this may be because the SIM was an old 2G not 3G sim, so I purchased an o2 3G PAYGO sim and tried again.
CE 1.30.107, Extended 1.30.162, Radio 1.0.9
Still no luck....
I've tried Buzz's Unlocking utility just in case it was locked to a different network, but this being an o2 device I would expect it to be locked to o2 if anything. The unlock utility said it succeeded in unlocking. But still no service.
After a while I get a box appearing with:
Select a network:
O2-UK
@ VF-UK
@ Orange
@ 23420
T-Mobile UK
I've even seen a 'G' icon & and while at work a 'U' icon, so I would guess the radio does work.
I've even checked out the imei to make sure it wasn't blocked on the network (lost/stolen).
I'm a little stuck now what to do, other to use it as a PDA without phone functionality. I might see if i can borrow a Vodafone or Orange SIM to try out.
Anyone seen anything similar, or have any ideas?
Vodafone works
I just tried a vodafone SIM, it worked fine.
I'm having the same problem with an old O2 genie sim it cant find the network any ideas as to why?
If you have seen a G and a U symbol then it HAS actually registered on the network, else you'd have seen an X there. so that rules it out as an IMEI lock out.
Ok as a long shot upgrade your radio to 1.15 and give that a whirl.
