Assigning a new sound for receiving of text messages - 8125, K-JAM, P4300, MDA Vario General

Hey guys, I just recently downloaded a short 2 second mp3 clip of "special ed" from crankyankers saying "ive got mail, yaaaaaaa", and want to make that my notification for text messages... I have added it to the windows folder, but it will not show up as an option in the sounds and notifications window. I then tried changing it to a name of one of the current sounds (T Mobile 4), and took out the current one, but no luck.
Where do I need to put this file in order for the phone to recognize it?
Thanks,
Brian

Hi,
U need to convert it into a wav file, not hard actually and save it in your windows folder!
Just search for "mp3 to wav converter"
Lemme know how it works

Thanks- easier than I thought- does the same go for adding new ringtones? just convert the mp3 to a wav and put into windows folder?
B

should be have not tried it!!

Changing the outgoing sound for email and text msg on JasJar

There is not setting to change the outgoing default sound for email and test msg. Can anyone point me to a reg key to I can manually change it on my JasJar?
Thanks,
Mike
Hi Mikey.
If you have the time and can be bothered, there's a better solution wherby you copy all of the event sounds you want and copy them into a folder on your storage card and copy it to your PC. There you can analyze the sound file and make up your own. e.g. I use segments of records/mp3's then convert them into the PPC format, name them the same as on PPC i.e. Activesync, connected, disconnected, new txt message etc. Then put new files back in Windows directory.
Yeah it's a pain, initially, but the end result can be likened to a bespoke sound theme to accompany your today screen!
Just an idea! I'm into personalisation
Heh, yeah you are absolutly right. Heh Im too lazy.
Can't say I blame you.
"Permission Denied"
Hi Mackaby007, I had thought of doing this myself and attempted just that - but when I tried to rename (eg) Notify.wav I was thrown a "permission denied, file maybe in use..." message. Do I need to turn off/unconfigure all the sounds before I can remove/change/rename the wav files?
Also, are these simply standard wav files? Or are they special wav files? If I convert an mp3 to wav and successfully place in the Windows directory - will it work then?
Thanks for your help

jingle when sending SMS ?

Hi chaps
please read this and put me out of my pain, its really driving me up the wall now.
i want the wizard to vibrate when a text message comes in, no sound just vibrate. this onlt seems to work when 'notifications (alarms, reminders)' is also ticked, is this right? seems like one setting should affect the other ?
but how do i stop the phone from going 'jinga-alinga-jing' when i have just sent a message, i am on payandgo and it tells me my balance everytime i sent a message and i can see no setting to stop it.
even putting the phone into silent mode from the volume control will stop this jingle ITS PURE MADNESS.
anyone else found this? i can't be the only one on payandgo can i?
if you're on O2 PAYG you can call/email them and they will disable the credit notifications. This is the only solution I could find as I did not manage to turn off the actual sound, someone else perhaps?
hahahahaha
i am indeed on O2 didn't know they could turn them off.
i'm moving over to orange very soon though, if it still does it then guess orange can turn them off, cheers you have saved my sanity.
pretty odd that there is no way of stopping it in the phone though
I'm not an Payandgo but did you try in Parameters > Sounds and notifications > Notification (tab)
In the combo, you choose : "Message : New SMS"
And for this particular event, you can remove the sound and choose vibrate ...
Is that what you need ?
YES! i'm having the same stupid thing as well! My phone is a wizard badged as an O2 and i am on a O2 PAYG sim. I have CID unlocked mine and installed the K-JAM rom instead but still have the same issue when the phone is on silent.
Pulling out my hair!!
thanks for your replies guys
YvonLeFou - its not the sound to say that one has come in ie 'new sms' it happens when you send one. you send a message and O2 remind you what your balance is. dunno how this is done but it ignores EVERY attempt at stopping the xda to play a jingle. even if you put the phone on silent it still does it.
Latz - looks like Marc83 has the answer, call o2 and ask them to disable credit notifications, please let us know how you get on. i'm not bothering asking o2 as i'll be on orange soon. expect i will need to ask orange the same.
Marc83 - cheers
Did you try to deasable the notification message using the tweaks in the registry you can find somewhere on this forum ?
ive got hte same problem. Ive tried that and it still wont go away. its So So irritating
If this is their standard "SMS Sent Notification" you can suppress it by:
Edit your registry, HKCU\control panel\notifications\default\options (DWORD)
Set the value to 4. You will get a momentary Icon on your task bar (top) but I will go away on its own.
this isnt the jingle from the sms sent notification. This is the jingle after it that says "balance: £0.90" etc. It only happens on pay and go phones and it does it after calls and sms no matter what volume setting the phone is on.
I spent quite some time trying to do this and I just now figured out a way...
I used ActiveSync to explore to \windows under 'My Device' and copied notify.wav to my desktop. I then used an audio editor to make it silent and copied it back.
Now when I get the notifications it still plays the notify.wav but it is silent. You could change it to any sound you wanted.
Hope that helps someone...

very good idea, i just wanted to point that out lol
My nodify.wav file is locked by windows... cannot edit it to make it silent. Does anyone have other ideas? It seems a registry tweak might be the best option, but I dont know which one to change in order to stop having the annoying balance notification after each call... thanks
I'm not sure what you mean by locked. When I copied the notify.wav to my windows desktop it was read-only. I had to go into the file properties and uncheck that before I could edit it. Is that the problem your having?
I used Sound Forge to edit the audio file. You could use something like Audacity that is free.
Then I just copied it from my desktop back to the same folder. It asked if I wanted to replace the file and I said yes.
Hope that helps...
I also unchecked read-only in notify.wav, but then I still cannot delete it. The read-only check dissapears when you uncheck it, but when you return to the file properties its still there. It must be protected by the OS. I also tried to modify it using a wav editor, but no luck. Of course, I can copy it on my desktop and edit it there. Its when I want to replace the original that problems occur.
Im both desperate and annoyed by that sound after a call. I also tried deleting almost every Reg key that has something to do with it, but no luck. Thank god HP has a good backup software...
Hopefuly somebody will post a workaround... thanks anyway
well, I wasn't expecting to post a work-around myself.
I went back to XP rather than Vista, and the XP explorer allowed me to change the notify.wav file. Now I have a silent file instead of the original and it works perfectly.
I guess Vista is less permissive than XP.
Interesting that Vista turned out to be the difference...
For those without access to XP, I wrote an installer cab to do the replace.
It should replace the notify.wav with a silent one then ask you to reboot the device. I tested it out on my HTC Wizard and it works. Really the only work it is doing is copying one file so it should just work but you never know...

What a fantastic idea, wish I had thought of that - worked like a charm, cheers buddy!
Notification Sound Changes
All I do with my notifications is find where the .wav files are located by exploring "My Mobile Device" - should be in the "Windows" folder.
Then I get the sound I want i.e. for new SMS messages I have Austin Powers saying "You got mail, baby!!"
I convert the audio format of the file I want to a 16bit, 11kHz sample rate and mono (single channel) .wav file. If it is not this format as a .wav file, it will not play. There are various free audio convertors out there that can do this resampling.
I then copy this amended sample over to the Windows folder in the mobile device, just by copying and pasting in Windows Explorer on the PC
After doing this you can look in the Sounds & Notifications > Notifications Tab. In the drop down box you will find the additional .wav files you have added.

changing sms tones?

hi could anyone help me please ive searched for days for a program that will let me use my own wav files for sms alert. ive changed where there stored on my phone and sd card all to no avail! ive a program to use mp3 as ringtones called ringtone manager that i got from a post on this forum and this works fine but i carnt find anythig similar for my sms tones. ive a xda mini s running mw5, can anyone help me please!? thanks in advance of ur help.
Wave files should work for sms's in WM5 if you put them in the Windows folder.
success!!!! id read before that only wav files could be used be for sms tones, so after re-reading the threads on here i was still stumped as to why none of the wavs id got on my wizard would work. during a chat and comparing phones break at work today, a mate had a funny wav he was using for his sms on his nokia, he bluetoothed it to me and i thought id try following ur advice one last time, and ureaka! it worked!!!!! id copyed the folder of "wavs" i was using stright off my old phones sd card, id not relised that they were mp3 format.(i swear i thought they were wav!) it was then i noticed in the folder in my wizard the icon was different on my new sms tone, it was a media player icon where as the icon on all others was i mini mp icon in the corner of a white rectangle. is there a list of icons to file types anywhere? oh and thanks to xon1 for ur post, carnt belive i was so stupid as not to double chech my file format!!!

messaging contacts in SIM

hey everyone
i'm new to this forum, have read around and found alot of useful info about the tytn.
but there are two issues i havent seen anyone talk about on this or may be its just me.
first, i cant seem to find an option to text message contacts that are saved in my SIM. Can you not message contacts in your SIM? or am i doing something wrong here?
Secondly, how do i set my ringtone as the alarm tone as well? because the sounds for alarm are too short and i need someting that will play for a while.
can anyone help me out with these ? any help will be appreciated. Thank You in advance
For the alarm tone, you need to copy a .wav file to the WINDOWS folder of you device. It should then show up in the drop down menu on the alarm page.
Unfortunately, you can only use .wav files and not .mp3. I've also noticed that files larger than 30kb wont play which means the tones would be short.
oh ok.. i tried to put .mp3 file in the windows because i noticed the alarm tones are there but i did not see it when i was setting the alarm so i guess it should be .wav and no more than 30kb i guess?
thanx alot.. going to try that
is there a way set different tones for receiving a text message and different tone for receiving a call? i did not see an option for that
also about text messaging.. i cant see an option of texting a contact if they're saved in my sim.. is there a way around it?
thank you for your help
anyone....?

thanx for the info.. i put a .wav file into windows folder and the size was 798kb and it worked
figured out everythin except messaging sim contacts..
i go in contacts.. there are no contacts so i go into menu .. sim manager.. and go into menu .. no option of text messaging.. i even keep the scroll wheel pressed on a contact and only options are to edit, delete or call.. etc but no text messaging.. so i'm guessing the contacts have to saved on the phone !?
You're not the only one, I had the same Issue with my SIM contacts and text messaging also
Spent HOURS on the phone arguing with the iMate Support Helpdesk guys who all use the same stock-standard response "Have you soft-reset? Try a hard reset? I know you say you've done it but do it now while Im on the phone? Didnt work? I dont know then?"
Problem no longer exists with WM6, I also made a thread on a local forum:
http://pressf1.co.nz/showthread.php?t=86250
Unfortunately I dont think they're about to start patching WM5 for us, so I figured it was time to go back to WM6 again (Using Schaps 4.30 this time), and so far so good... pics up my SIM contacts fine in messagins now!
thats a releif .. thanx!!
so i guess i'l b upgrading to a different rom soon enough

Ringtones are generally .mp3 format whilst alarms are wav. format
Create a copy of ringtone you want to use and change it to .wav and you'll be able to use this for sms
do a search for a small program called ringo moibile, that will let you asign any ringtone for any function in your pnoe
thanks for the help..i have converted the mp3 to wav .
and placed it in the ringtones folder.
but it still can not see it .. to use it as incoming text message ....?
i have looked for ringo mobile...but says its not compatable with my phone...

.wav files don't go into ringtones folder to be picked up, they generally go into /windows along with all the other .wav files
I believe there are other apps out there if you search which can also do this. Go to the apps forum and try searching there.
ok thanks again...
is there an app that will allow me to look into the windows folder or how to access it on my phone..
sorry about all this..im new to the htc phones.
that is what i am using with the htc hd ( blackstone) and it works no prblem at all
