I stupidly dropped a screwdriver onto my screen, and its made a really annoying dent on the screen, so i'm going to try to get a replacement MDA Pro (Im still within my 30 days of starting my contract).
Obviously i'm not covered for accidental damage, so i was thinking of nuking it somehow, if i disconnect it mid-flash, will that put it beyond repair (from t-mobiles pov) and will they send a replacement? (Can they tell that, that is the cause of the fault?)
Thanks!
Probably not going to get anyone on the board to help you commit fraud but if you're industrious you can probabl figure something out.
I dont see them going for it.
You try to get it exchanged as not working when there is a dent in the screen?
Come up with a better excuse for the dent?
Like throw the whole thing at the floor and say someone knocked it out of your hand?
haha
twist the screen 360degrees does the trick  and is still under tmobile warrenty
I doubt you need to wreck it, there are so many imperfections. Does your camera show dead pixels (very highly likely it does) then that qualifies for exchange. Does the lid creak badly? Does the metal plate at the top sit properly? Is the keyboard slightly misaligned?
Look and ye shall find glitches. Almost guaranteed sorry to say.

Actually yeah, my camera has got loads, and my screen has got 2 dead pixel. Are you sure thats enough to get a replacement? I'm sure it'll look dodgy if i say that, and they decline it, then i call back a few days later and say 'oh no, it died!' lol
Am i right in thinking that i've got to do this within the first 30 days of my contract? (I didnt take out insurance) and im assuming ill get a brand new replacement, not a refurb?
Ohh and last thing, i read on t-mobile.com that they send out the replacement first, then ONCE you've recieved that, you then send out your phone, is that the same process here in the UK?
Thanks
its usually 28 days, not 30!
Unless it's an upgrade.... I was told 7 days, and that's what the paperwork says too.... and if it's a replacement, it'll be a refurb if they have one, otherwise new... least that's what it was last year....
Hmmm :/
Do they send the replacement before they receive yours?
I called T-Mob about a problem on mine which is outside the 7days, but well within the years warranty, they said I have two options...
1) Go to a T-Mobile store, where you can get a loan phone (an old nokia...) while yours is being repaired/replaced
2) They will send you a jiffy bag for pre-paid postage, post it off (no loan phone) and will replace/repair within 5 working days.
Don't know if this is the same if it's within your cancellation period....
Hmmm i'll probably take it to a store then.
If i DO decided to flash it, and pull the plug 1/2 way through, will they know for DEFINATE that it was due to me trying to flash it, and is it recoverable?
Thanks!

dude do be careful when doing those since it would probably affect your microwave/house property warranty as well ...
That's a good point... is it worth risking it, just for a dent on a phone??
ok screw it, i have a plan:
Car battery + jump leads + MDA Pro = dead phone (at least, i hope!) lol
I Have done similar with a laptop months ago... I cut a usb cable in half and injected 15v (the power from the laptops actual charger) into the usb port fried the motherboad good and proper! and got a full replacement. hope this helps
You all do realise that this is *fraud*, carrying anything up to serious jailtime, we're discussing here? And that this is a medium where what you say is not only completely public, so accessible to (agents of) the people you're defrauding, but also permanently recorded to be used as evidence against you?
Furthermore, you do realise that defrauding HTC in this manner makes all the rest of our honest folk's devices that much more expensive?
Not to mention that if they refuse to honour your warranty, say because they know how to google, that you've gone from a fully functional PDA with a little dent to a doorstop.
just tell them that the dent was there when u got it, and didn't think to swap it straight away, act DUMB.

Stuck Buttons
This is an issue with the Imagio. The only real fix is to have VZ send a replacement.
There has been a discusion on it here at PPC
http://forum.ppcgeeks.com/showthread.php?t=99190
And, if you look on the VZ forums there are more people talking about this.

yeah- like the guy said- a whole thread dedicated to the subject. and then you find out that even though you pay for insurance instead of getting a new phone they send you someone else's old phone that was broke and they fixed for you. nice. when my end button got stuck down i ended up ripping it off and fooling with it until it unstuck. had to use a little adhesive (totally lame) to make the cover stay on the actual button. definitely does not work as good. after that i started looking into all the ways i could to avoid using those buttons.
xda shutdown.
volume app's.
etc.
Mine stuck within the first 30 days so I made them give me another brand new one. They tried the certified like new thing with me but I wouldn't accept that. It did take a fair amount of *****ing on my part before they gave in.
Why would I pay for something new that doesn't last a month and accept a refurb?
So my point is, if your phone breaks soon after you bought it, don't accept anything less.
Also, I'm on my 3rd one. Verizon's policy after the 3rd one within a year is to get you into something different that's new and of "equal value" if you want. However, they will not openly tell you that unless you insist on it.
I'm on #2 and I am tossed between using the buttons as little as possible or as much as possible.

Hi guys, have just referenced this issue and thread in the Wiki. Hopefully some more travellers will find the info and offer some assistance.
freakin buttons
My wife and I both have Imagios. I have had mine replaced once already the buttons on the replacemnet are stuck and a new one is on the way. The buttons on my wife's are now stuck and she has a replacement on the way.
Verizon is telling me that they no longer let you get a different phone after 3 replacements. I would yell and complain, but what phone do they have thats better?
Add me to the list. Windows button decided to get stuck last night. I will say that it was particularly cold (36F) and I had been outside for some time, thus making the device fairly cold. When I depressed the button, I noticed that it was hesitant to move, then made an quiet yet audible *click* and that was that. I have a feeling that the defect lies in the membrane beneath the button and when exposed to cold, it becomes inflexible and cracks. I'm debating whether to actually go to the VZW store or call the customer service. If I actually go to the store, will they likely give me a new device (if stocked) or do they have refurbs in the store? So long as the refurb is in brand-new condition, it doesn't matter to me as I have a feeling this will just happen again. While I love this phone, I'm hoping warmer days will make this a non-issue. In any case, it's a bit of a bummer when virtually every day I have impromptu debates with a droid owner about who's phone is better. Last night, I lost.

If you have proof of purchase (IE original packaging, maybe a receipt), it may be worthwhile to contact HTC directly. I would assume that the phone was purchased w/o a plan and/or you're not a current VZW customer anyway. I would assume then that any defect/warranty issues would default to the manufacturer. I believe HTC has a 90-day warranty.

i tried conatcting local HTC india ,.,.,. they cant help.... can i get replacement on ebay or anywhere ... plssss its urgent
stuck buttons avoidance
I have a solution that seems to have ensured I don't have this problem. I placed a screen protector from my mp3 player across the buttons (since most screen protectors for the imagio only cover just the screen itself), and then using an xacto knife i carefully cut the excess mp3-screen protector around the outside edge of the send and end button and along the bottom of all the buttons such that the remaining film secures all the buttons together.
This seems to have some effect in stabilizing the buttons and making sure nothing snags on them or prys on them and it seems to keep my phone from having the problem reported here. I've had mine on for at least 3 months and not a single button problem.

What exactly did HTC say?...They warranty these phones for one year, and they were released in october, so its not out of their hardware warranty period.
Is the ESN on this phone valid? Something isn't adding up here.

Hi
The problem is i got the phone from my sister who lives in US.... i live in INDIA!!! bangalore to be precise!!! So HTC say they wont help.... my sis will be back after 6 months... LOL
Ps whats ESN... is tht the IMEI!!!! well its GSM unlocked thats as far as i know
Here's an idea: Call HTC USA and pretend you're wherever your sister lives in the US. Explain the issue (leaving out the bought as gift, sent to india part) and then when they say they'll fix it (which, if the phone isn't stolen or otherwise they will) send it to your sis in the US and have her send it to HTC from a US address. I'm sure with the large number of questionable phones floating around india/asia they're hesitant to replace it. When in doubt, lie. You purchased a product and you deserve coverage. Don't let their resistance stop you; you're certainly not doing anything illegal, simply circumventing their "security" measures.

i know how the dust in getting in our phones, there is a defective seal between the body & the lcd. how do i have proof? i went to install a screen protector today and the solution leaked underneath the lcd and leaves staining and a fog. i had to put my hero in a bag of dry rice to preserve & dry it. no other phone i have had, had this issue when installing a screen protector, im only using a small amount of water spray too, not a ton.

I actually agree, for some reason I am just unable to pass up an opportunity to give you $h1t
Fortunately I have been one of the lucky few who have no dust under my screen and my call/end button paint shows no wear at all. My hero looks as new today as it did on 3/12/2009 when I got it.
I was serious though about getting photographic documentation, not sure what you would do with it but if you ad an opportunity to tell someone who could do something about it you would be glad you took the pics (ie, emailing someone at htc or sprint, or even proving the defect to customer service in order to get a replacement)
*edit- You bought the screen protector from HTC? I put a full zagg shield on mine a couple months ago and was very paranoid about the solution getting down in the crack between the bottom of the screen and the button plate but I was lucky, no problems.

The experience you had today will in no way void your warranty unless you let it. You are the customer, be a customer who's business they want to keep and they will bend over backwards to help you, I have proven this theory many times

Eh...good luck. You've got water underneath your screen via a third party screen protective solution.
The liquid wouldnt have entered your screen had you not administered it. Water can creep through even the smallest of openings.
I highly doubt things are going to work in your favor if you enter a Sprint store. I'm not aware of any corporate Sprint location that advocates a screen solution that requires even the smallest amount of liquid since liquid damage is something that must be handled by the insurance company, Asurion, that many wireless providers work through.
Its worth a shot. Just dont be completely disappointed if the Sprint store doesnt respond in your favor.

Sprint stores as well as Best Buy both install screen protectors, so I doubt that would be an issue.
Umm...not to be rude here, but that's been a known issue for a while. It's not new. Anyone who's had the dust issue (myself included) has known about the seal under the screen leaking.
Yes it's defective. If you put up enough of a fuss they'll replace it with a refurb which will likely have the same problem.
I'm one of the lucky ones. I bought mine at best buy, got it replaced, and haven't had the problem since. It appears HTC had a bad batch (well a lot of them, really) for about 6-8 months. They fixed the problem after that, but the good ones are mixed in with the old ones. It's a crapshoot as to whether you'll get one without a dust problem.
I always get screen protectors that have built in sticky solution. never had the dust problem either.

I'll just put it like this, its not that I don't believe people are having these issues its just that they are exaggerating it completely out of proportion.
I have a Htc Hero(With Google) made in 2009, came with the 1.56 RUU Installed. I have 1 (READ 1) dead pixel on my entire screen, the case has no paint chips, no dust under the screen, buttons show no wear(its not paint...), my speakers work and sound great, I get a full signal in 90% of places, Calls never drop, hardware is fast if you know what your doing and tweak it, you can run 2.1 perfectly if you know what your doing, no battery issues whatsoever.
So yeah... a dead pixel... I'm completely returning my hero to Sprint for that. (not)
Click to collapse
I also have a dead pixel. And I'm not returning it for that reason, either.
But I feel I need to set you straight on a few issues.
#1. The dust issue is real. While I personally didn't wait until I had half my screen covered with it to replace it, I've seen pics (here I believe) where the phone is virtually unusable due to the dust. I had a small amount of dust. But why shouldn't I return it? Why should I spend a bunch of money on a defective piece of hardware? If it's not properly functioning when brand new I'm returning it. Which is what I did, and lucked out.
#2. Button wear. I've never had this problem (only had the phone a couple of months) but my wife has. Whether it's paint, or dye, or what have you, those things can and do flake. There are also images of it on these forums if you search for them.
#3. Never had a speaker problem.
#4. You seem to be extremely fortunate about where you live/drive/work then. Because signal issues happen if you do any travelling.
#5. I don't get people with battery problems either. I have the stock battery and can go all day (12-14 hours) and use 50% or less of the battery.
Anyhow, I doubt the people that are having the issues you mention are exaggerating, and at least in the case of the flaking buttons and dust I know from experience they're as bad as people make it out to be.

exactly, plus they sell them as well. it wouldn't void my warranty under water damage because the water indicator sticker is intact and there are no signs of water damage. i doubt a small amount of solution would seep under the screen unless it was defective. im about to call sprint and demand a brand new hero or a samsung moment as im on my 3rd phone now. besides the fact the 3rd phone they sent me was suppose to be new and it's a refurb with over 700 calls made from it. im really about to not buy htc or sprint anymore and maybe move to another carrier.

I'm not aware of any corporate Sprint Store that would install a screen protector that uses any form of a liquid. The screen protectors that Sprint stores sell are a stick film. Nothing that requires liquid to apply.
Best Buy stores do sell and install these...but you're not going to Best Buy for a replacement unit generally. I'm sure they'll turn you away.
well forget sprint, they said the most that will happen is to give me another refurbish, they need to all be on the same page. some say you get new phones and some say they give you used ones. after 3 phones im entitled to a new one or another comparable model. so i guess my last hope is to call htc on monday, after that im dropping my contract and going to t-mobile or verizon. maybe the issue is they give people used phones and not new ones, they need to start backing up their warranties because it seems to me they are just cheap as hell.

all replacements were done through sprint and my 2nd one was a brand new phone. the tech told me last week that if my 3rd one acts up im entitled to a another compatible phone model such as the moment. now they are telling me something different. to me the $7 insurance i pay for every month is apparently worthless.

Yep the 3 phones for virtually nothing compared to how much you would of had to pay.
Why do we even bother with the $7?
Okay, so i noticed a few months back that the hinge on the camera side on my camera didnt fit properly. And it slid around very badly. I took it to the Verizon store and they barely looked over it and told me i could buy a case for my phone. I took it again a couple weeks ago...they told me that it looked like a hinge broke on my back cover, and they again told me i could buy i case-__-....So, i didnt buy a case, but i ordered a replacement back...and low and behold THE SAME PROBLEM...I do admit that the replacement does fit a bit more snug, but still doesnt fit into place in that corner.
I did notice that the hinge on the back cover doesnt meet up directly with the hinge on the back of the phone which means it has to be a problem with the way the phone was manufactured, because theres no way i can get two different back covers with the same defect!
I attached a pic....do any others have this issue?....cuz im not really sure if i should argue with Verizon at this point.
-I was planning on selling my Incredible next year to get a new phone...most likely this one http://androinica.com/2010/08/07/le...e-for-verizon-wireless-gets-caught-on-camera/
-And this manufacture defect lowers my resale value.
-Also im afraid they will try and argue with me, because i dropped my phone and have a cosmetic flaw on that side...so it kind of looks bad if you know what i mean.
-What do you guys think?
-You will also notice where it looks chewed up, thats a result of me dropping my phone, however...that happened long after i noticed the defect and long after i told Verizon about it...so they arent related issues at all
>>>>>I talked to the store reps and they documented it this time and that the warranty will send me a new one
Have you thought about getting a red original cover for it on ebay? Maybe that will make the resale more attractive.
I've always had one of those silicone cases on mine, but having to remote/reinsert my battery earlier I happen to have it off right now. Mine seems to fit well around the entire phone, though it did start coming off easier than I would've thought as I was removing the case earlier. I definitely don't have your problem though.

Dont have that kind of money x)...im only 17 and my parents wouldnt pay $100 for it...but that doesnt help my issue...im just wondering if i should take it back or not
the way i feel about it is that my lowered resale value should be a result of my own faults...i.e the me dropping it....but it shouldnt be lowered because of the manufacturer
not only that, it makes me feel uncomfortable that it wont be as sturdy or anything...which i already know thats the case

Idk, lol...i just hate dealing with reps that dont know ****...and also the lady at the warranty service told me that if i send it in and they determine i broke the phone. That i would be charged full retail price.
Why does the plastic on the front of that corner look all chewed up? It looks as though someone were prying it with something sharp and did a careless job.

I dropped my phone...but that happend after i discovered the defect and showed it to the VZW store.
-I know it kind of looks bad on my record now...but im going to talk to the manager and tell him that the reps didnt document the other 3 times i came in when the lady on the warranty service said they should have
I'm sorry but that does not look like a defect. If it only happened after you dropped your phone, it's clear that there is some sort of correlation. These things don't happen randomly without some sort of mishandling.
I've had my phone since the day before release (got it a day early thanks to Fedex) and it looks pristine. Next time you should invest in a case which will help protect your phone and avoid stuff like this from happening.

It bothers me that you got the same line of bs as I did. I also took my phone in because of a defect. I've always used a wrist strap on my phones and am always careful and OCD (I actually clean my phone everyday) about them. Well, the tiny plastic piece inside the battery cover that secures the wrist strap broke. The sales rep. said I'd have to buy a new phone because of wear and tear, take it up with HTC, or buy a case. I was upset, but too irritated and reserved to take it any further.
Really, why should we fork over MORE money for a case when there is an actual flaw in the product?

If you read in the OP...i complained three different times...but each time they looked at it for a minute and told me i the broke cover...AND THEY DIDNT Document it....I tried a second time...they looked at it for a minute DIDNT DOCUMENT!...and they told me oh well you can call the warranty people, but it just looks like you broke the broke the back cover, you can buy a case if you want...so i called the warranty people and they told me that the workers should have documented it...so, i went a third time and they did and said the same thing each time...So, i bought a replacement back...AND IT WAS THE SAME ISSUE...which means it was the main part of my phone, not the back cover...and so i took it to the store and told them to do a thorough inspection and they even tested my back covers on their phones and both my back covers fit perfectly...so he showed his manager and they documented it and told me to call the warenty people and they should send me a new one...so im satisfied

Thats exactly the way i feel...while its great to have a case and it is recommended....ITS NOT NEEDED, and i dont want to pay money for something i dont 100% NEED...And im glad it didnt get to the point where i had to argue that with them...like i said, theyre gonna send me a new phone, so im happy
I think the most funny thing about all of this, is Im part Jewish, and that side of me came out today...because one of my main concerns was resale value...so my dad told me i Jewed Verizon, lol

I did exactly what I shouldn't have done and bought a gel case - though I wanted one anyway.

Whatever, You made me laugh.
I just dropped my phone and the hinge flew open. On the side near the power button, the joint pulled away and now the phone doesn't slide correctly since the hinge is dislocated. Can I fix it myself? It doesn't seem to have broken anything, just pulled out of socket or something. I'm not really sure how the hinge was connected in the first place so I don't know whether it just needs to be pushed back in or what. I attached some pictures of it too.
Based on that first photo it appears that you sheared a pin off somehow - the one that the main crossbar hooks onto. If that's the case, I don't know how you'd easily repair it.
Ooowwcchh....!
Well I have insurance with t-mobile, but I'm rooted running CM6.1 so I don't want to try to get it replaced and get screwed over. Any advice for that?

Talk to Customer Service (dial 611) and tell them the hinge came apart (I wouldnt mention dropping it unless its obvious that its been dropped) and they'll offer to send you a new one. If they wont send you a new one (which would surprise me, they're pretty good about stuff like that, especially known issues like the hinge) then you'll need to make a claim on your insurance. If they send you a new one without making an insurance claim then you can wait until you get your new one, make a back up, and then return your phone to stock/unroot before you send it back. There are threads here explaining how to do that. I've never made a claim through my insurance with TMobile, so I'm not entirely sure how that works. You might have to unroot/return to stock before you take it to the store. If you can call your insurance and make a claim then it might work the same way and you can wait until they send the new one.
Edit: After looking at the pictures, it doesnt look like there's obvious damage, so you should be home free on not admitting its been dropped.
I just threw up a little.

Posting pictures of it won't help you. You need to take it apart and reinstall the hinge. If it broke a pin or something, find something to replace it, then reassemble. Don't listen to anybody who says you can't fix it... EVERYTHING can be fixed. Especially simple/stupid mechanical things.
Looks like you broke it in the spring box, heres a pic of it from the inside, there are guides on tearing apart your G2 but I dont know how that will affect the insurance, if you have to return it under insurance and your worried about being rooted there are guides to unroot the phone.
Yeah, it seems like it's definitely worth it just to unroot and return it like I never rooted it to begin with. Tearing it apart is sketchy and I don't know how successful I'd be in the first place, I'd probably just screw it up more.
So I'm assuming this is the go-to guide for unrooting: http://theunlockr.com/2010/12/01/how-to-unroot-the-t-mobile-g2-htc-vision/
Anyone have any experience with this?
Thanks guys for all the input

Note that your warranty doesn't cover this type of damage.
Why wouldn't it? Are you saying that because I dropped it or because it's physical damage regardless?
Also, does anyone know what the deductable is for getting it replaced if I go the insurance route?

Warranty only covers DEFECTS. It doesn't cover things that you cause. You dropped it, thereby causing the physical damage, you therefore have no warranty. Its all gone. None left.
insurance deductible is $130. better off calling tmo and just saying you have a loose hinge, since it's a known issue, they'll replace it. Don't say it's popped out.
Woops don't know what happend to the pic I posted but here it is again:
that looks awful to try to fix...I was watching the video that someone made about taking the hinge apart and it looked really intense. How would I got about even finding a new pin/spring or whatever?
I wouldn't mention anything about dropping it and just say it has a loose hinge, worse comes to worse blame it on the shipping and an already loose hinge.

they wont replace it... at least they did not to me... they went on and on that is the way the hinge was designed and crap like that...
i think you are better off if you just pay the 130 deductible, and just report the phone lost and a new phone will be on its way next business day.

Not necessarily true.
As long as there is no evidence that the device has been dropped/abused/dunked into a bucket of water T-Mobile might try to protest but ultimately this can be deemed as a defective device.
You pay for insurance. Its a disaster clause too. Not a warrentee. You could brick your phone and tell them about it and they will replace it. Its the point of insurance. Warrentee is different. Keep in mind, you pay 130 deductable to replace a phone. Don't worry about cm6. They are also not allowed to assume you will root your new phone either. So even if they boot to a cm6 logo they still have to replace your phone since you pay for insurance and the deductible.

I have a chip the size of a point of a pen on the side chrome bezel. I have no case because Im waiting for my UAG and Spigen case to arrive. Im still within my 14 day return period. I thought about actually taking it back to get a replacement due to the small blemish, although, I admit it's kind of silly to exchange the phone for something so small. It just sucks that my baby is not perfect any more. Knowing I have an opportunity to exchange it, I just might. How many of you would exchange it for a new one for something so small?
i wouldn't

I would not.
But, since it is already bugging you enough to ask people's opinion about it now, you'll probably come to regret it eventually if you don't.

If I find a defect or blemish on a new phone, that was a manufacturing issue, I may return it for replacement. If I caused the issue and it was minor, I'd ignore it because a case will hide it anyways.
If it was a serious damage... cracked screen, etc.. and it was my fault, I'd just pay the insurance to get it replaced.
Note: I'd also be more descriptive in my subject/title if you want to get more response.. Instead of "would you?" I would have put "Would you return your Note 3 if it has a blemish?"

Correct me if I'm wrong but you've just admitted it's not a defect but it fell off your night stand onto the tile with no case. This would indicate physical damage so unless you have a flawless return policy, you may be out of luck. I know in Canada, if this were the case, we would be told to suck it up and be stuck with a device we would need to sell privately or wait before we're entitled to a hardware upgrade.

The point is.. he didn't 'start' with a damaged phone. He dropped it and didn't have a case on it. I have a cheap $3 case on mine, until the case I want comes out. If you don't protect your phone and you drop it, it's your fault, not the manufacturers. That's my opinion anyways.
I have noticed the phone runs very warm sometimes when its just sitting in my pocket. I called at&t and they said to return it since Im still within 14 days.

GL with this. Let us know if your successful or not.
I dropped mine on concrete from about 1.5 feet up. Very little damage on the side, which I could EASILY live with.
Sadly, the entire display died slowly over a 24hr period. I kid you not, I could almost see the screen slowly die. Inside, I was crying.
But it was my fault, and almost got laughed out of the store when I tried to get insurance on it /facepalm.
Now I'm in the market for a full screen/digitizer/front assembly housing. And the phone isn't even 1 month old! /cry
For the price you've paid, you deserve a flawless product, return it and enjoy a full product. In other words go get a replacement!

I'm sorry but isn't that what insurance is for? Doesn't matter if you drop the phone in the toilet, you can still get a replacement, otherwise why have insurance in the 1st place, if the damage is from before you got it or Samsung's fault isn't that what the warranty is for....
Yes and get a different color.
Man I'm on the Otterbox Defender's notification list for when it becomes available. But I still dumped $20 on a screen guard and a crappy gel case at purchase. Solid investment for the short-term, and I even have replacement insurance. Sorry but I can't even fathom the amount of rage I'd have at myself for being in that predicament. I like to keep my stuff in mint condition for resale when it's time to upgrade.

Ok Y'all. At&t replaced it today, no hassle. They even installed a brand new glass screen protector, no charge. I wish my cases would arrive already! For now Im putting in a invisishield sock.
Not worth the hassle as you might end up with a new unit with other characteristics, like wonky home button or gaps around the glass.
