switching off 3G - JASJAR, XDA Exec, MDA Pro General

i don't have it, and i'm not bothered about having it - the phone supports it, but i haven't signed up, and don't have a need for it -
can it be switched off? A few posts have suggested that it will improve some aspects of performance.
Thanks already

hmm
start-settings-phone
then click on the 'band' tab
make 'select your network type' GSM
should solve your question..
also it should make your phoncalls more stable and you wont miss phonecalls anymore.

WHat do you mean, "signed up"?
And yes, it'll improve battery life to have it off. Although you'll find that GPRS interferes with phones, and UMTS doesn.t
A big plus for me in work.

dull corportate account - we signed up before 3g was available, and i can't be bothered to pay them extra for a new Sim.
am i making a b*m decision?

Any company worth it's salt will upgrade your SIM for nothing.
Ask to be put through to retentions. Tell them you'll buy out your contract if you don't get your way. They'll not only give you a SIM, but they'll let you sleep with their sister too.

do you have a picture of this sister?

Depends on the network.
If it's T-Mobile, she's cheap but easy and everyone'll have had her. But you do anything to her for £7.50.
If it's O2, she's expensive and nobody can afford her. And she says she's good, but isn't.
If it's Vodafone, she's hugely popular, but no-one knows why. But she'll give you 60 minutes and only charge you for 3 minutes.
If it's Orange, she's an animal in bed, but she speaks with a Calcutta accent.
It it's Virgin, well you get the picture....

Noticed this thread is about turning off 3G, but what about turning off GPRS? Was wondering if there's a way to do so as I currently do not have any GPRS account yet..
Hope you guys don't mind the slightly off topic question

Ebay man. I just sold mine also (I to bought an iphone, need that 3G, bunch of apps and awsome touchscreen) It just sold today on ebay for $700. Not bad for a used HD.
doesn't ebay take part of your money?
bump...
..........
price? I already pm you.
Changing to Iphone? thats baaaad. three of my friends bought iphone, 2 got rid of it under 14days for free return and bought htc tytn2 and Diamond. Third one didnt because he paid so high price that he has to stay with it.
Good luck and have fun with your apple.
edit: remember, if you read apple forums never believe what they say. I would give you URL but it is in Finnish so useless. Funny to read those apple people: "My keyboard is badly made, battery doesnt work good anymore, bad screen, but other than that I like it. it is good for me."
ive used an iphone before.. ive never had a problem with it.. its so much better now with all the apps. tons of people have it.. theirs no issue. their are problems with all the phones.
no phone is perfect and not every phone is perfect for everyone.
thats all that has to be said.
I like the black rubber case... where'd you get it?
not sure where.. go to the accessories page in this forum and look it up

Have you sold it yet?? I'm interested
hey man goodluck with your sales. I'm starting to think if I should let my go too. I miss functional keys for text and is currently thinking about saving for the n97. Same size screen plus a keyboard. Hard decision to make. Also thought about the X1 as well. You stuck on getting the iphone 3g for sure? Why not consider unlocked phones with the US 3G band, that way you can get 3G data for less.

A newbe

Hi guys! Amazed by this forum, so much advanced users here...
I have been a user of blue angel for about 4-5 years, travelled with it in Europe, Asia, Americas, sank it, dropped it, loved it... got it from expansys long time ago...
Got my Touch HD yesterday, unlocked, nice and shiny. Impressed so far, no flaws at all, Edge is fast here! (I'm in Houston, TX now)
Question. I am with ATT, and have a basic plan that does not include internet. However I am able to use internet thru data connection on my Touch HD. Are they charging me for usage? Do I have to be subscribed to a more expensive plan to be able to use it? Well, I'm using it now...so does ATT know at all that I am using it and how does it work with them if they don't know what phone I have?
Free internet just sounds too good to be true...
Thank you!
Newbe, data is data it doesn't really matter the phone. I can throw my AT&T SIM in any phone and use the AT&T network. You probably had some form of default data set up on your SIM and I would be very surprised you're getting something for nothing. More probably you're going to be charged on a usage based per kb basis. I would suggest you contact them and get the all you can eat plan cause you'll need it. It runs about $30 a month. If you stick with the metered plan hang onto your wallet.

this is correct: any data capable phone can access the internet using pay-per-use and your charged for each KB of data, unless internet usage is explicitly turned off by calling at&t cust service! get on the $30 unlimited pda-connect data plan very soon, or you'll be paying through the wazoo

Tethering Droid Eris

I currently have an unlocked Touch Diamond on AT&T that I tether to my laptop and use very often for an internet connection since I live in an area where I cannot get anything other than dial-up over a line. I've seen that the international Hero has software from HTC for tethering in Windows, but I'm thinking that this is probably not the case with the branded phones here in the US, which is unfortunate since I'm no longer under contract and Verizon has better coverage in my hometown and surrounding area. Do people know of any tethering possibilities with the Eris?

Wow, it's not that I don't believe you, but this does almost seem to good and simple to be true. Are there a couple others with experience with this program that might be able to advise of potential pitfalls, or is this really as perfect for what I need as it looks?

Yes, I found PDAnet after hours of searching for a tethering solution and tried it. Works like a champ. I have had no issues to date using it. It also let me put my iPhone loving friend in his place.

Alcatel-Lucent LightRadio (Sprint's New Move)

So a CNN new report says that a Sprint Spokes Woman indicated that Sprint is looking to expand their network using this Technology.
"Sprint is talking to Alcatel Lucent about this technology and we will be working with them to test and evaluate it," a Sprint spokeswoman said. "We have been aggressive in smaller factor cell sites to help us support the growth in data traffic."
Full Article http://money.cnn.com/2011/03/21/technology/light_radio/index.htm
This seems like a very solid move for Sprint if all works out with this new technology, Cheaper to operate, faster data transmissions, and better signal all round.
Sprints all mixed up Hesses not sleeping well due to the merger news yesterday
Lucent was always forward thinking as a company when they were Bell Labs. Somehow, it's not surprising to me that this idea is coming from Alcatel Lucent's shop.
And that Sprint is thinking about using these devices shows one, that they know they need to upgrade their 'net, and two, they expect to offer unlimited data into the foreseeable future, especially if these towers-in-a-box prove as deployable as they appear.
Good move, Sprint!!

Best analysis I've heard yet.
Sprint is all over the place with news and speculation. I love it!
I'm actually very nervous about the ATT-T-Mobile move. If this move goes down, Sprint is guaranteed to remain the smallest of the major service providers. If this happens, does Sprint lose their wind, or does this kick them in the pants?

Anybody notice that Box resembles the one in 'HellRaiser' ?
Dan better be careful lol
I dont know this has failure written all over it.
If they would just slap a few of these on the towers their problems would be solved

Ha Nice played sir. Nice played.

Finally! A smart phone that does everything I ask of it!

Probably a stoopid thread, but I can honestly say that this thing rocks!
Every smarty phone I've had to date had multiple things that made me go ARGGGGGHH.
my SIII has done everything I've asked of it. Bluetooth, data reception, wifi, phone reception etc has all been spot on.
Usually at some point on my previous phones I'd go.....wtf !?! But honestly, I have not said that yet. I've found that if it was unfamiliar or different than my previous phones, I usually like it once I figure it out.
Now Tmo's reception......not so good.
But I like Tmo though. After many bad experiences with other carriers, they've been a pleasure, over all, to deal with.
Positive rant over........
True. This phone is excellent. A joy to use and even after I have all my apps and settings loaded it is still lightning fast. Oh and the camera is great.

Well that s4 proceessor handles a lot of that too. Qualcomm deserves some credit.

A different experience compared to our G2x's isn't it? Loving mine so far. You're in Texas so you may like this. I found a nice case at the T-Mobile store that is silver. Combined with the blue phone it looks great and is Dallas Cowboys colors!

Well, mine won't do wifi tethering, FM radio, toggle LTE, or several other things. But that's all thanks to AT&T, not the phone itself
