pdf files better way?

I'm frustrated by the way pdf's are forced to completely redraw (or maybe reload) themselves when you scroll around within a page. It makes them a time consuming hassle. Is there any way to make it scroll smoothly? I'm using the clearvue pdf viewer that was loaded with the Cingular 812555.

Thanks trashman for the suggestion. I'm not worried about paying for the program if it does the trick (though of course I would rather find it for free). Does anybody out there know if mobipocket will help smooth out scrolling when viewing PDF's?

It won't display PDF's, you'll need to convert them, which may result in problems unless your PDF source is fully text-based.
That is, don't even try to convert a, say, graphics-heavy tech book to the Mobi format.

dunno with heavy graphics but with normal graphics, pictures and so on i have no problem with it...and it scroll fast on text and relatively smooth on graphics...
but mene is correct, u cant read a pdf right away, it need to be "converted"...

Yup, with a normal, say, literature book the Mobi format is much better than PDF.

I for one am a fairly heavy PDF user and have always gone back to the bloated Adobe Reader 2.0. Just found this Foxit Reader for Windows Mobile which is still beta but was quite impressive. No installation, just a small executable that I copied to my Program Files directory and changed the PDF default viewer in the registry. It has a stupid nag screen and an Evaluation banner at the top of the that I'm sure will disappear when it's actually released. Looks like it has promise.....

I tried 'em all on my 8125, and settled on Foxit Reader. It only cost me $9.99 for a licensed version, and it works as well as any. It is very fast, takes up very little room and redraws seamlessly. The only drawback to it is that it has no find function. But tables of contents and links within documents are both fully functional. It's the best pdf viewer I've used in all my years of using PDAs and Handhelds.

I did have some trouble in getting the licensed version to keep my registration key from one session to the next, and had to get about 4 different "new" versions from them before they finally got me the fully licensed executable, but they didn't give up and their replies were timely.
Overall I'm very happy with it. I even open 6+Mb manuals with it and it is very fast in doing so, and just as fast in navigating within those large documents.

Okay. The I downloaded the Fox Reader evaluation. Is there anyway to make it the default reader once you get the licensed version?
By the way - it's much quicker to use than the clearvue reader.

RepliGo PDF Mobilizer looks quite nice as well. The viewer for pocketpc is free, but you'll need to convert your PDFs to a custom format with their software, which is shareware (but nothing a quick search with Google can't fix).
The converted files are about half the size of the original PDF without losing layout/features etc.

Use a registry editor, navigatate to HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT. Look for pdffile. The Shell\Open\Command. Open the key and copy the text to the clipboard. (Mine says "\\Program Files\FoxitReader for WiM5.0.exe" %1" Close that and go down to Opendoc\Command and replace the text in the entry there.

Adobe Reader LE, Anywhere?

Hi!
After testing the many Roms in the forum, i found Adobe Reader LE installed on PDAmobiz ROMs.
I've been looking for this version of Reader, but have not been able to find it, even at Adobe's web site.
Anyone knows where to find it?
Is that only for AKU 2.3 or 3.2 or something like?
Reader 2.0 is so heavy on memory and works way slower!. The PDAmobiz version is the best I've seen so far.

Just copy the file "\Windows\ppc_adobereaderle.exe" from PDAMobiz's ROM. You can place this file to any folder in your PPC and run it from there.

BTW, anyway to extract that from the install files? I'm currently running the last Qtek ROM, and would like to avoid the install/extract/re-install procedure... even the temporary directory during install does not have the app.

1.- It DOES display pictures.
2.- BTW, the conversion you're talking about is not done by Reader LE itself. I Don't do any conversion, on the contrary, I Copy PDF files straight to my SD card or via Active Sync without any problem or transformation. (please see next post -edited-)
3.- Adobe missed the point, Reader 2.0 is 8 MB big, both in storage AND in memory while running....
4.- As for the conversion, it seems to happen ONLY if you have installed other version of Reader, or the latest one coming from Westek (ClearView)
5.- Maybe there are some Tagged files that will not display correctly, or that do not reflux, but PDF is all about displaying documents EXACTLY as they were designed. I dont care about reflux, nor do they display properly at all times...
Really, the only reason I see for Adobe neither supporting LE reader nor allowing to download that from it's web page should be compatability with new features... Who cares at this time?

6.- PPC Reader 2.0 when installed from your PC, does not allow you to uninstall the "PC part" of itself, nor does it undo its installation changes: It activates conversion of PDF files to TAGGED PDF files, thus making (on a 30 k file) increase its size FIVE TIMES! and displaying incorrect on every other pdf reader, as LE itself.
7.- Even unistalling PPC Reader 2.0 from your PDA, retains those settings, so you have to go manually to your Active Sync Advanced options and change .PDF files conversion to none. You will notice how fast and nicely Reader LE performs.
I'm sorry to insist, but it's a pitty to discover such a nice performer as Reader LE is, just to see it "orphaned" from it's own creator. In fact, even trough a deep web research, it's impossible to find.
IMHO reflux is a flawed patch from Adobe, it screws many files making them unreadable.

Oh, I can definitely verify that this shows pictures, I am reading my latest issue of Popular Science. Way cool, and thanks, I need lots of PDF's for my job and have been too lazy to to take apart the full Acrobat installer so that I could install from Linux.

This is way faster, better and "lighter" than the one on Adobe's own website. It's weird why they elude this version from downloading. :-(

I get a lot of emails with pdf attachment. Is there a way to automatically associate the pdf attachment with Adobe Reader? After installing the adobe reader le, when I open a pdf atachment in the email itself, it can't recognize the file. I have to save it first and open it from Adobe Reader.
Perhaps there is a Reg Edit for this.

Since you are NOT installing the program, the only way I think of is editing the registry and subtitute the program now "tied" to .pdf extensions by the path and name of your reader LE.
Hope it helps.

You've got to manually put in the registry settings to associate both "open" and "opendoc" under "pdffile" to Adobe Reader LE.

Freeware CHM Reader?

I've tried using CHMReader.net, but I keep getting an exception error, and it seems to want to take forever to open a file. It's a large file, I won't lie, but it should eventually open it. So far it hasn't.
I've seen the MicroOlap reader, but it doesn't meet my frugality requirements (read: I'm too cheap to pay for it).
I've seen mention of a "Fast CHM Reader" and after considerable searching, I've tracked it down. Unfortunately, it appears to need the chm file to be on the root memory, rather than a storage card. Also not an option. File size exceeds remaining memory.
Does anyone have a suggestion for alternatives to these programs, or a fix for either one?
I strongly prefer that any alternatives be Freeware or Open Source, available somewhere for download (drop-in .exe or .cab file is fine), and you'll be owed a great measure of gratitude.

Still no love on the CHM reader front.
Any advice from the "old-timers" other than to drop the idea?

I used to use microOlam CHM reader, when I had WM5 on my device, unfortunatly, it not seem to work on wm6, so you can try to convert the chm file to moby reader file using mobireader desktop edition, and then read it on your PDA using Mobipocket reader.

Microsoft Reader

Why doesn't MS supply a .cab file for this??? You would think that someone would have thought about putting it in MS Marketplace. The .exe file doesn't work for me with NSFAN'S 6.1 rom for Sprint. It won't install onto the phone, and there is no real error message, just that it didn't install successfully.

BUMP!!! I know the MS Reader is highly disdained, but I have a ton of books in .Lit format I do not want to loose. Running the installation program is Administrator results in the same error.

Not sure about the ms reader issue. However on the the .lit file side I had the same problem, then found a program called convert lit. It dumps the contents as an html file, and then I can just use ubook reader to read it.

Will look into this, but I would really prefer not to got thru hoops to read what worked fine in the past.

Microsoft (MS) eReader Issues and a Fix

Not much has been said about the Microsoft (MS) ereader app on this forum (that I could find), but I found an extensive discussion on a Microsoft forum (http://social.answers.microsoft.com...e/thread/49DD09A8-3B32-4F97-AAA3-2585818F03DF). The problem is that MS Reader does not work well with WM6.5. Several people, including me, have been told by MS support staff that MS Reader does not work with WM6.5. That is not quite correct. There are activation issues (see below), but the main problem is that DRM/locked (copyrighted) books cannot be opened on WM6.5 systems such as the HTC HD2. Trying to do so will cause the program to hang and a soft reset is necessary. I was able to open and read unlocked, public domain books in the LIT format.
The current version of MS Reader for smartphones is 3.4.2. (See http://www.microsoft.com/reader/downloads/ppc.aspx) It was intended for WM6.0 and WM6.1. Changes in WM6.5 apparently conflict with the reading of DRM books.
A number of HD2 users experienced problems activating MS Reader. Apparently, a file - OEMInfo.xml - was missing. This file is required for the activation process. The missing file may be due to replacing the stock ROM. My HD2 with stock ROM 2.13.531.1 has the file, and I was able to install and activate the MS Reader. If the file is not available from HTC, the link above has references on how to obtain the file. (I tried contacting the person referred to, but never heard from her.) If you want to use MS Reader to read your old LIT files, first make sure you have the OEMInfo.xml file in the Windows folder, or try to obtain a copy.
There are some programs that can convert LIT files to other formats that other ereader apps support, but these converters will not convert DRM/locked files. My solution was to use the ConvertLit program's "down convert" feature. I used the GUI version of the program because it was "easier" to use (see http://dukelupus.pri.ee/convertlit.php). With this program on my PC, I was able to unlock or decrypt the DRM books I had purchased over the years. I consider this "fair use" since it for my personal use and I don't make the files available to anyone else.
You will need to have the desktop version of MS Reader installed and activated on your PC (http://www.microsoft.com/reader/downloads/pc.aspx). I am able to read my DRM books with the desktop version on my Vista PC. (Please read and follow the directions on the MS Reader website for using PCs with Vista to activate MS Reader on the PC or smartphone. It requires running your browser in Administrator mode. Windows 7 PCs have a different set of problems. I can't even get a Win7 PC to recognize my HD2, but that is another issue.)
Next, install the ConvertLit GUI program and start it. Also start the desktop MS Reader program. Select a LIT file in ConvertLit, in the My Library folder under My Documents by default. Select your output folder or check the box to use the input folder. The converted file will be renamed so you don't lose your original file. Click on the Downconvert button at the top. The first time you do this, you will be prompted that the keys.txt file is missing. Also, you may be asked to select a DRM book in MS Reader. Open the MS Reader library and select any DRM/locked book. You are asked if you want to use the Key Convert program. Click Yes to any prompts. After a short time, you should get a message that the keys.txt file has been created. Close the dialog for the key conversion program.
You may still get an error message that the keys.txt file is missing when you again click the Downconvert button. I believe the keys.txt file got created in the My Library folder. You may need to copy this file to the ConvertLit folder under Program Files on your PC. The error message indicates where the file is needed. Once I did that, I was able to select a LIT file, click the Downconvert button, and get a decrypted file, slightly smaller than the original file. I copied the file to my HD2 using my PC's File Explorer. (I also removed the locked copy already on my HD2 that would not work.) I was able to open and read the file with no problem. I was even able to convert multiple books at one time.
The advantage to this process is that is does not require converting the file to another format, although ConvertLit can do that after unlocking the file.
One issue with the MS Reader is page turning. The program was designed for hardware buttons or the D-ring to change pages. These don't exist on most new smartphones. It is necessary to tap on the turn page links at the bottom of the screen. This takes some practice and occasionally multiple taps.
With both Amazon and Barnes & Noble providing ebook readers for various other OS's, I would not be surprised to see them on the new WindowsPhone 7 phones in the near future.. But I will be surprised if we see an upgrade of the MS Reader for LIT files. Taking your LIT files to a WinPhone7 system probably will require converting files to another format that has a WM7 supported ereader program.

I bought an DRM'd book a while back and it was in M$ Reader format. I've gotten it to work on my desktop but never have on my Hd2 (or before that on my Toshiba). I do have my HD2 activated (what a pain) but it's worthless in my opinion.

The method I describe above may not be worth the time and effort for one or two locked MS reader LIT books, but if you have a number of them as I did, it is very useful. I now have my DRM books unlocked and readable on my HD2.
