DVD ripping

What's the best freeware to download for ripping dvds to my xda2?
If you did a search with "dvd convert" on this site, you would have found al the info you need!
For instance here http://forum.xda-developers.com/viewtopic.php?t=4707&highlight=dvd+convert
Or you could have use "dvd rip" and found this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/viewtopic.php?t=1283&highlight=dvd+rip
Thanks. Didn't think to search with ''convert'', ''rip'' produced no results. Still doesn't really give me the noddy guide. I have divx and windows media player and encoder. Where do I go from here in 5-10 basic steps?

This is my experience in ripping:
I rip to a version that can fit on a CD so I can watch it on a laptop, and then from that I create a PDA version. You can also create a PDA version directly but you have to create a pseudo AVI which takes around 40 minutes. I could not get Pocket DIVX working so I rely on PocketTV which plays MPEG videos. You'll fit a 90 minute film on a 256Mb SD card but when you go over that you need a 512Mb card.
Smart Ripper: DVD to hard drive
http://www.afterdawn.com/software/video_software/dvd_rippers/smartripper.cfm
To create PC version that fits on CD:
Flask: VOB files - AVI
http://go.to/flaskmpeg
Best use XVid codec for video, and MP3 codec for audio, I found max video bitrate to be 750, audio 96, video width: 512. Can get codecs in Nimos Codec Pack:
http://www.divx-digest.com/software/nimo_pack.html
To create PDA version only:
DVD2AVI: creates a pseudo AVI to be used in TMPGEnc
http://www.afterdawn.com/software/video_software/dvd_rippers/dvd2avi.cfm
Save the project (creates a d2v file)
TMPGEnc: AVI - MPEG
http://www.tmpgenc.net/e_main.html
Open the XVid avi file or the d2v file, I use a bitrate of 180-190, audio 96, use audio-edit, increase volume by 200% if you are going to watch the film on a train or plane.
If you are making a MPEGs from an XVid AVI, follow these instructions:
- With Nimo's Codec pack only install VidX and MP3
- Install FF DirectShow filter and follow the below:
The error you receive is because direct show does not have priority over the *.avi gfiles. So the fix goes as such. In TMPGEnc, press option, then environmental setting. Press on VFAPI plug in tab on the right hand side. In here you will see "DirectShow Multimedia File Reader" and priority -1. You need to make it +1, so right click on it and choose "Higher Priority". Do this twice to take it to +1. Now press okay and all is fixed. (Note that this error only usually occurs on xvid transcoding, so if you're doing anything else, you may want to revert the priorty.
If you have a Windows XP, change the compatibility mode of the TMPGENC EXE file to Windows 2000 in the Properties of the EXE file

windows media player XDA II

Ive transfered mp3 video files over to my XDA II but media player wont play them why? Is there a file size limit?
I have transferred audio mp3 over with no problem
well maybe windows mediaplayer dont like the bit pr secund rate of those mp3's ms dont really like mp3 and like to push their own format which is wma
i would try winampaq or some other free player and see if it play more nicely otherwise try different bitrates or maybe another codec
in cdex you can choose between a few mp3 encoders
Video MP3 file? I don't think so....
Windows Media Player will play wma, mp3 for audio and wmv and avi (possibly others too) for video, the bitrates and resolution size you use are important for quality of picture and quality of playback.
Use Windows Media Encoder for a nice little batch of tools, if you use Windows XP, then you can also use the windows movie maker which can export movies straight to pocketpc format.
Cheerio
if he mean video and in mpg and not mp3 then
pockettv and pocketmvp are pretty good mpg players

video ripping

what programs are recommended for ripping DVDs into 640x480 to view on ameo?
any recomendations for conversion of existing AVIs ?
PocketDivXEncoder is free and excellent:
http://www.pocketdivxencoder.net/
cheers for that.
ive converted an existing AVI file i had, can view converted file on PC nicely but windows media player on Ameo says it cannot play file. Do i need a seperate divx player or codecs installed on the Ameo?
Also, the pocketdivxextractor doesnt seem to like the VOB files on a DVD to read. i dont see a preview, and when i tried extracting one..it came out jarbled and lasted only 5secs or so. Is there a trick i am missing? Tried a couple of my DVDs, in various drives
You need a divx player for PPC, WMP wont do them. Or mpg, its kinda sucky that way.
Also, pocketdivxencoder crashes lots under vista

you need "tcmp" or "coreplayer"
greetings,
Wout
Agreed, TCPMP or Coreplayer are your best media players for pocket pc and are capable of playing Divx, MP4, Xvid, OGG files and mpeg 1 files amongst others. WMP10 only supports WMV, MP4 and MPEG 1.
TCPMP is freeware and various codec plug ins are available for it, such as AVC, AC3, FFMEG etc.
Coreplayer is not free but is made by the same people and is a much nicer application aesthetically.
Conversion is achieved by many different methods. Pocketdivxencoder is a simple one to use, but is lacking in DVD to PPC capabilities. It is better used for quick re-encoding of existing AVI files etc.
For DVD Ripping get the following freeware software:
DVD Decryptor (to remove encryption from DVD and to rip it to hard drive)
Get and use DVDx 2.5 to encode the DVD to Divx based AVI file or Xvid (free codec)...though I prefer the results of using the latest Divx codec (but it's not free, you do get a long trial period though to see if it meets your demands).
So basically DVDx encodes your VOBs to one AVI file or other format and takes a bit longer than Pocketdivxencoder, but you get more options in encoding and much better results in my opinion.
Alternatively download a copy of ImToo 3GP Converter which can rip a DVD direct to any other format (most poular formats - providing it is not encrypted, in which case use DVD Decrypter or DVD Fab Decrypter Freeware and superb application).
Once you get the hang of these apps you should not need any others, but if you really get into all of this encoding lark, try Virtual Dub or such like programs which give you virtually full control over all aspects of video conversions.
Good luck.

any good video apps out there...?

what's the best application to watch video on the wizard...? I've been converting avi videos to 3gp with total video and it's been working, but is there anything for WM6 that will play avi files...? converting them to 3gp is great for saving space (converting an avi video to 3gp makes it roughly 1/10th the original size), but the video quality is pretty bad...
TCPMP works great, google it.
thanks, I'll do that...
TCPMP
Here you go...
thanks MACkjam...
i like tcpmp the best, but you can also use win media on your phnoe and get the video on there by using windows media convertor, a free download on microsoft.com as long as you have a legit copy of windows on your pc.
I've been using total video converter and converting them to mp4 files, they play on the WM6 media player...
to save space, I used 3gp format, but the quality of the video is horrible...
Google this: pocket divx encoder
Enjoy. Its the best
Here you go for PocketDivxEncoder...
Works like a charm..
pocket divx converter likes to crash on windows vista...

Windows Media Player (MP4) Converter

Hi
Are there someone recommend softwares for converting MPEG video file into MP4 that can play in Athena WMP 10?
I tried ImTOO converter but my Athena says it doesn't support that file. I have old MP4 files that are able to play in WMP 10.
Thanks
Felcus
install TCPMP and the codec pack then you will be able to play any MP4's !
where to download?
google is your friend ! start with just TCPMP and if that does not work add the codec pack, the codec pack can be a little harder to find so I will up it for you.
Video recorded on HTC touch cannot view on Windows Media PLayer
HI,
can anyone help? I recorded some movie on HTC Touch and when i copied the file to my PC, I can view it on Windows Media Player 11. How can i solve this?
Do you mean you can't view it?
What type of file is it? MP4, 3gp, avi?
Id recommend VLC http://www.videolan.org/vlc/ on the PC for viewing most video files. Its free, lightweight and just works.

I dont know why you did not start your own thread on this but try installing something that can play 3gp files like quicktime
Windows Media Player supports only certain type of Codec. To make WMP support MP4 format, you should install filters for MP4 format and its associated codecs. After you installing these filters, all players that use DirectShow technology, include WMP, will support MP4 format.
Install the following codecs to have a try.
Elecard MPEG-4 Codec Pack
If you can't install or still can't play MP4 in WMP, converting your MP4 to WMP natively supported WMV or AVI format with Faasoft Video Converter is the best choise.
