GPRS ??? and better phone dialer software... 8125 - 8125, K-JAM, P4300, MDA Vario General

Hey all. This forum is a wealth of knowledge.
I am however confused about GPRS. I've seen a lot of utilities to manage it, but I'm not sure what it's for. I mean I know it's another way of connecting to the cell towers, but why utilities to manage it? Is there a benefit to using it. Should I use it all the time. Should I get one of the utilities to manage it?
Second, I'm looking for a better phone dialer. I've tried my version of Agenda Fusion and it's way too complicated. The default Contacts is a little shallow. I'd like to find a piece of software that makes it easy to go to my contacts, enter a first letter to search by, then select whether I want to call the person cell or home. Any ideas? TIA

Are you happy with the PPCPE dailer?

Having had my XDA 2 now for a few weeks, and having finally worked out most of the kinks of the really inadequate bluetooth stack (by installing the widcomm stack) I am now moved to address my other annoyances: the very feature poor phone software.
I expected a very configurable phone, but was very disappointed with the microsoft dailer. The short list of features I find missing are:
No separate ring tones can be assigned to each contact. This could be very usefully, as you would know who is phoning without checking the screen.
No software to keep track of your calls or GPRS allowance. Even my old nokia from 3 years ago could do that.
No way to transfer a call from the handset to a headset. I know you can do it the other way around, why not this way too?
Very little status information on the dailer screen. Why is this, when most cell phone screens look like the status display on a jet?
Anyways, there is alot more, and people may want to add their annoyances. Im really wondering if there is any software that can replace the microsoft Dailer (like Pocketinformant replaces the pocket outlook).
Any ideas would be appreciated.

Took me a minute to know what you're talking about.
No, I hate the built-in dialer on the Pocket PC.
The author of mobidial (http://www.mobidial.com) told me there will be an XDA II version.. hopefully soon.

hey,
just a few comments....
re: No separate ring tones can be assigned to each contact
- i beleive the o2 xda site has free software for download; one of which is called powercontacts. i believe it allows you to assign a ringtone to each contact. i tried it when i still had the xda1...never got it to work. so, i downloaded a trial version of ringtonex; it works like a charm and i'm able to assign individual ringtones to any contact i want. i immediately bought the software, i think it was for around 9usd. now that i'm using the xda2; the software still works great. for ringtones what i did was record the voice of my friends, officemates, my wife, and used those wav files for ringtones corresponding to their contacts. it also works in tandem with the photocontacts app in the xda2
re: No way to transfer a call from the handset to a headset
-the xda2 has bluetooth and i use it together with the bt200 headset. incoming and outgoing calls are automatically transferred to the headset.
2 cents worth.
cheers mate
robson
Transferring from phone to headset is a headset dependent thing. My HBH-65 allows me to transfer to phone and back to headset, but my Jabra wouldn't have.
Thx for the great pointers. I am definitely getting the RingtoneX app, and mobidail or something similar, when it comes out.
I just wish that developers would design more for handed use, not using a stylus, especially as bluetooth voicedailing does not work.
About transferring to a headset, I mean after you pick up a call with the XDA, transferring the call to a headset should be possible, but has not worked for me yet.
Another minor peeve, why is the sms option not on the dialler, but on the menu bar, and why is speaker phone also not on the front, but you have to press a key for it. There still needs to be alot of improvement. Hopefully independent programmers will kick in and fix all these deficiencies. It does make you wonder if the developers actually use their own devices or not...

i think it's because that most cell phones screens is their version of the today screen
i most surdenly would not wish such a confusing cluttet messy interface on my worst enemy
(yeah of cause not all cellphones are all that bad some many are)
I dont know. At least they should have the battery status on the screen, and the network logo would not be ammis either (currently its difficult to know when you have no reception, or just no reception)
Alot of the stuff thats currently in the task bar could also be bigger icons on the dailer, and it would also make it look less plain and just incomplete, as if its been thrown together at the last minute.
Surur
well not sure if it's much help but if you install some bar like advanced wisbar on your pda you'll have batt status in the bar both in today and the dialer
suppose this is a pre customised vs. free 3. party customising
some people like to set up their device with personal customising and some people want the place they buy it to handle that
in that way i suppose xda and other such devices are more like computers then std phones are
of cause if one get a xda with all the stuff in the preloaded provider rom they get more of that stuff you want
of cause thats not saying that they get enough
Ive been a user of Icbar for a long time, but as notifications is so important on a PPCPE device, and its not supported, I am not able to use it anymore. This is unfortuanate, as I enjoyed knowing what my battary status is all the time.

If you want to use your finger to dial contacts try Fingerclix by imaginet software. I used it on my Samsung I700 and now my I-Mate and it works just fine.

This is brilliant. It would be even better if it could use the phone key insteadof loosing my contacts button. Any idea how to do htis.
Thx

Too many questions...

...so i put them all in one thread. .
Hello everyone.
Just got a TyTn. Quite a change from my old K800, but im sure i'll adjust.
Ive been reading around here for a few weeks now in antisipation of my TyTn arriving. So know a few things already, like the highly rated 'batti' battery app.
I have a few questions about it though that i cant find definate answers on:
- Is it possible to have custom ringtones for each contact?
- How do i close programs? As at the moment they just seem to minimise, and the only way i can find to actually close them is through the memory app in settings.
- How do i install the today screen app called 'Launcher' its not a cab file like the rest of the programs ive installed.
- Is there a today screen plugin i can use to lock the phone when i press it?
- Some of my contacts are listed as 'elliot, fred' rarther than 'fred elliot'. How do i fix that?
- Is it possible to have full screen contact images? Ive got contact images setup for a few of my contacts, but they only ever show up as a tiny icon when opening a txt (havnt tryed incoming calls yet), is there a way to make it so that when i get a txt i get the picture instead of/extra to the standard popup?
- Emoticons. How/can i put them in txt messages? (actually view them, not the pure text equilivent.).
Thanks in advance all.
Any help would be much appricated. .

Ok I tried to help, but geez dude. I think this forum may be a little advanced for you. There are plenty of other websites and forums that can help you with these questions. Before you post any more questions:
1. Read The Windows Mobile Manual
2. Learn how to use the search function
3. Spend a little more time reading
4. Read a little more.
5. Come back and post questions when you ACTUALLY have a phone. THis way you can try to figure things out on the phone before you start asking questions.
Good Luck!

New to 8525 and have some questions

Hi I just got the phone today and have been reading posts on this forum.
I have a couple of questions.
1. I used to have 8125 and the way to change right volume was on the side of the phone now 8525 has a scroll weel there how can i change the ringht volume or atleast to vibrate with a button without going into setings?
2. Is there a way to use the GPS? From what I understand all phones have GPS but we just can't use it for navigation only the cops can use it?
3. I see that you guys are using all kinds of roms on your phones, please sugest the best one or top rated or the one u think is most stable?
4. So far my plan is to: Upgrade the ROM, Install a different comm manager (to set the phone to one network), What other sugestions do you have?
Thank You all
I appreciate any help.
VM
With GPS you need to buy a bluetooth GPS receiver and some navigation software, I would recommend TomTom. With the volume just tap the volume icon in the top bar and you can adjust the volume or you could use Comm manager switch to vibrate etc.
I understand you can use PGS receiver but isent there a GPS build into the phone already? From what I read by law all US cell phones must have GPS build in for the police (maybe it was never done)?
Also for the volume I understand how to do it manualy but isent there a way to use the scroll weel or another buton ?
Thanks

When in a call the scroll wheel adjusts volume and also in certain other programs like windows media player.
As regards the best ROM. There is no correct answer to that question. They are all slightly different with different features. Some folknprefer one with as little as possible added to give speed of operation, others want particular features added that they use a lot.
You will have to read, read, read on the upgrading forum. The assumption on the upgrading forum is that you will have read a lot before asking questions. If you decide to upgrade then I recommend using Mrvanx guides to do it unless you are certain of what you are doing. He is a member here but you can google mrvanx also.
Mike
Thanks,
I did read and read and read for like 3 hours yesturday and I know the options and where to find info on how to do it my questions are more forcused on helping me make the decision on which of the 1000 things that i read I should do to my phone.
On the sound Issue, Like i am about to walk into a meeting and i want to turn the volume down to vibrate on 8125(wizard) it was a move of a finger i didnt even have to take the phone out of my poket. How can i do the same on 8525 (hermes) ? I understand I can tap on the sound icon or go into comm manager but I want to do it with a button?
You said that Roms are different with how many fitures they have? how can i find out which rom has which features is there a comparison chart somewhere?
Thanks A lot
For the vibrate toggle search for Commtoggle-vibrate-fix.cab works great.
As for good ROMs, you'll just have to try several - it seems that even though the hardware is EXACTLY the same, different ROMs work better on some hardware than others. Also different ROMS work better with the software you like to install than others.
Definitely use MrVanx guides. I'd suggest trying Custels ROMs (cingular oriented), Black Majik, VP3G (cingular optimized), Legolas' and Faria.
Personally I'm running Black Majik currently, it's just setup more how I like it by default.
Agree with PKLEY; the Commtoggle-vibrate-fix.cab works very will with the 8525; once installed, just hold the Comm mgr button for sec. or so and the phone switches to vibrate (and will vibrate and show a vibe icon); to return to normal ring, hold the comm button once more. I use it frequently without problems on both my 8525's
awsome thanks guys the vibrate fix made my day
Where is Commtoggle-vibrate-fix.cab?
Hi,
I did a search of xda-developers.com and can't find the Commtoggle-vibrate-fix.cab. Tried google and that didn't help either.
Help!
Thanks,

DJ-Nitro,
Thanks....
I think the above posters had a slightly confused name. Not Comtoggle-vibrate-fix.cab, real name is CommButton-Toggle-Vibrate-Fix.cab!
They were close though... LOL
Another place to find it, and most other helpful cabs, is HERE. Especially good is DeStefano's Cab Collection
Enjoy!
just wanted to give my 2 cents also. i also have an 8525 and i did basically what another member already suggested: downloaded several ROMs and installed each one on the phone and played with it for a while until i found which one i liked the best (settled on v3pg). each of them has its own highs and lows. just have to play around.

HTC_SmartDialer2.5

I'm not sure if anyone has ever used HTC_SmartDialer2.5 or not, but it is a really handy dialer.
For those of you who used PalmOS, you probably miss the nice quick dial feature in the phone app. You could see your recent calls just by pressing one button, and it was smart enough not to show the same number more than once. You could then redial any of your recently dialed numbers easily with one hand. With the standard dialer in WM6, you'd have to go in the history, and ALL calls (showed the same number more than once) would be listed, and you'd have to sort through them.
Well, this dialer makes it really easy to do this. You'd have to try it to see what I'm talking about.
Anyway, the problem is, is it was made for GSM - so there's some bugs.
1st, the EVDO data arrows always show active (common bug for GSM dialers)
2nd, the ## codes don't work (common bug for GSM dialers)
I'm going to include the dialer for you guys to try, I'm sure you'll like it a lot. But if one of you savvy programmers could figure out how to make those EVDO data arrows show dormant correctly, this thing would be perfect.
Thanks!
Since the dialer was made for the GSM platform, 911 calling WILL NOT operate normally if at all.
I tried various dialers...As I read deeper into it I learned that the dialers I was trying were not designed for the CDMA platform and that 911 features were disabled. Needless to say, I hard reset my device back to factory defaults because not having 911 is a serious flaw.

So what dialers do people recommend and where to get them? I'm for the one handed operation and find the phone part of the Titan the worst part about it.
Anyone?? this would be great!
if you dont mind getting your hands a little dirty (and voiding your warrenty) then try building your own ROM and place DCDs dialers and quickdialing apps into the rom you are building. there are tons of how to's in the upgrading forum for titans. the other option would be to use a software like bigbuttondialer. get a good working one here at this link. (this one works with 911 and all the other codes so because it was built from the ground up). then go to your phone settigns and enable quick dialing.

Help with college project

Hello guys....well I need some idea with my 3rd year college project...it has to be an useful app and not a game or something:laugh:
My professor came up with 2 topics::
1>>USB-to-USB android connection for file transfer...unlike wireless ......and I do not have any idea how to do that...I mean I searched around and found that there is a way to connect 2 devices via Master-Slave method in this forum but that uses an app and I cannot use that app...neither can I find any tutorial on this matter
2>>Optimistic algorithm...I don't exactly know what that means...I mean how to implement it in an app...
I have thought of one...but I guess that exists...anyways,my idea is a dialer app that searches contacts according to your preference...by name,by last called,by frequently called...making calling on your phone a little easier...also I was thinking of implementing this in a popup manner...where the dialer does not accomodate the full screen but only a portion making the user able to search for a contact and do other activities together....
I know it is a long post but please read and do suggest if you have any ideas...thank you developers :good:
I like option 2. Option 1 seems pointless to me from a useful point of view.
What kind of help do you need for option 2?
My thoughts for the dialer would be a predictive dialer like you described. Store call information in a database about your dialing habits, that will help you predict who you are trying to call. ie - dialed frequency, call length, dialed time of day/day of week.

Yeah, that's a cool idea. But hasn't this been done before?
I'm sure it has but use one's imagination and expand on current ones. It wouldn't be any different than the many different launchers or keyboards.
