SafeMode: Inspired by PHM TrayLaunch Thread - 8125, K-JAM, P4300, MDA Vario General

The PHM TrayLaunch Thread inspired me to look deeper into my Windows Folder. I have Spb Pocket Plus installed, the main reason is the SafeMode Option I get there.
Now I found a tool in my Windows Folder that is named SafeMode.exe which seems to be the tool that Spb Pocket Plus loads to get into SafeMode at boottime.
Now the tricky part, which I need help with. How do I add a service that is supposed to run at boottime in Windows Mobile 5 ?
Here is how Spb Pocket Plus SafeMode currently works:
1. I reset/boot my device
2. A popup comes up saying something like "Tap here to boot in SafeMode" - if I don't tap the popup it boots up normally, if I tap it it will boot in Safe Mode ( doesn't startup many services/today items, etc. )
Here is basically what I am trying to achieve:
1. Get rid of Spb Pocket Plus on my MDA VARIO ( QTEK 9100 )
2. Copy SafeMode.exe somewhere on the PPC
3. Have Safemode run at each boottime with the popup asking for SafeMode Boot/Normal Boot mode.

There is already a program called 'SafeMode' that does that.
And it doesn't come along with the mess of SPB P+...

Thats mCube Safe Mode - which don't work with Windows Mobile 5 !
AND as you can read I want to GET RID OF POCKET PLUS! But the Safemode.exe is only 17kb so that is the reason I am asking.

i think a lot would agree with me when i say the ultimate must have app is Spb Pocket Plus 3.0
I would add Resco explorer with reg.& ftp plugin, Sprite back-up, PHM mechanic, PHM powertoys & VGS mail (runs imap on your magician, found on this forum). Running airscanner firewall & Trend micro mobile security as well. Testing magic button for really closing apps. I belief spb leaks too much memory. That's personal ofcourse.

Here's the list of my must have's and how to's. To start with, installing the Big Storage ROM will make your device way faster, but ONLY IF you install most of the programs in Storage. This way, your free RAM will be 13Mb Prog/9Mb Storage most of the time!
The list of essential programs I don't do without:
1) SBSH Pocket Breeze: gives a lot of information on the Today screen and is not performance hungry. Very very stable. I installed in Storage.
2) Pocket Max PhoneAlarm: Today plug-in that allows you set profiles and assign MP3 tones to SMS as well.
3) Sprite Backup: Simply the best backup tool that also comes with Sprite Space Detective and a Today Plug-in for battery and memory monitoring. Using this plug-in I saved myself from installing SPB Pocket Plus (I don't want to run programs from a today plug-in, most of them are accessible from the Start menu anyway).
4) TKCreator: a theme editor that allows me to modify themes on the PPC and also select themes stored anywhere on the device without modifying the registry. FREE.
5) PSShutXP: a program that lets you soft-reset the PPC without having to fiddle with the stylus. FREE.
6) TCPMP (Beta Player): for those weird formats that WMP10 does not recognise
7) MemMaid: Mostly useful to delete Internet Cache and Mail attachment. You wouldn't need the Bad Installation clean ups if you stick to only the software you use and the only software that works. When I want to fiddle with some new software I just take a backup before I start and restore if I need to.
8) Microsoft Voice Command: ideal in the car, where I just say "Play ..." or "Call ..." at the press of a button.
9) Modified MS BT stack: at least this stack works properly with my wife's Nokia 6230. A2DP is also welcome with this stack.
10) MobiPocket Reader: a very cool RSS/News reader that I snychronise every morning, thus making my favorite daily readings available off-line any time of the day. (I'm subsribed (FREE) to CNN, BBC News, BBC Tech, The Register, Pocket PC Thoughts, MS Windows Mobile Team Blog, The Times of Malta and Soccer Net.)
Finally, with regards to closing apps as opposed to minimising them (one of the most popular features of SPB Pocket Plus), I found that with plenty of RAM available (after installing all progs to Storage), leaving the apps runnning in the background makes the Magician MUCH MORE responsive.
Since I installed the above setup I never ever had to reset the device. It's the best I ever had. Almost flawless.

I have only two apps running. Spb Pocket Plus and tAgenda. Between the two, I have all the information I need. I prefer to keep my memory useage low, so that when I open those two or three applications, they have lots of memory.
kta: I've searched, but can only find onfo on the Bluesoleil BT stack - not a modified MS stack. Can you please direct us to info on how to do this upgrade.
You can find it here http://forum.xda-developers.com/viewtopic.php?t=33532 in the first post.

[solved] BT-Icon disappeared

I upgraded to the WWE BigStorage ROM v1.13, but the Blutooth-Icon is missing somehow...
It disappeared after I installed some software (actually on my device: Resco Explorer, TCPMP, SPB GPRS Monitor, SPB Diary, SPB Pocket Plus, CELab CAB Installer, Ericz Call Filtering)
does somebody know how to bring it back?

What causes your problem is that you have a lot of stuff automatically loading at startup. From your list, all of the three SPB applications and I would expect also the Call Filtering app.
The bluetooth tray-icon is also loaded at startup, but after the today screen apps. For some reason BTTray needs to be loaded within a certain time after reset, or it will not load at all.
The quick way to solve it is to "trim" your today apps to load a bit quicker. Like only showing the next 7 days in Diary.
This has been discussed here before, and If you search this forum for old postings you should find more info (and solutions).
those 15 seconds you can change in tweaks2k.net?
I'll try, thx
==>even starting with no single todayplugin and after removing the callfilter the icon is not back...
will have to live without it
greetz Stefan
icon reappeared, but greyed out...it says that there is no bluetooth-hardware installed on this device
wicked sick...
edit: weird: after starting in safemode and now coming back to normal starting mode he wanted to install a USB device...
1.time: didn't do anything, ckicled cancel, BT-Icon was greyed out again woth no installed device...
2.time: typed "BT" in, device showed a failure and didn't install it, BT-Icon still greyed out, but I could enter the blzuetooth menu without any problems.
-->activating blutooth made the icon appear normal, but showed that bt is inactive, the blue LED blinked, so I knew it WAS active.
Deactivating and activating now made the Icon get to work again
==> problem solved

SafeMode: Which programs offer it & are WM5 compatible?

I require my VARIO to have the option to boot in SafeMode. So far I've done this with Spb Pocket Plus - but since it is such a memory hog I want to get rid of it.
So far I only found two tools that offer SafeMode:
Spb Pocket Plus ( which I want to get rid of )
mCubeSafeMode or SafeMode 1.02 ( not WM5 compatible, installed fine but did not work for me )
So what other choices do I have? What other ( hopefully tiny tool ) will let me enter safemode at boot time?
Help is appreciated. Best regards.
Slightly off topic, but do all of these programs provide the same form of "safe mode"? And if so, what does that consist of? Safe Mode is not an OS feature, so I'm curious what cross over there is.
V
Sometimes programs are unable to be un-installed because some parts are loaded, or maybe a newly installed program makes trouble.
So you simply enter SafeMode and are then able to un-install these "troublemakers". Since I try out alot of stuff I don't want to miss this great feature.
I'm not sure, but what I've noticed from Spb's safemode, it disables added today screen items and startup processes. There may be more that it does too.

Yep, thats what it does. So any chances that another program will do this?
There's a buzzdev thread about this. Someone posted a file in the last post. I didn't try it out because I have that feature with pocket plus, but you may want to try it.

If you use memmaid and look at services these 'programs' are moved to the top of the service order list, (therefore they are the first things the OS runs)... they basically have a small gui that says "you want to run safe mode" and if you say yes... they stop all the other services from starting, stop STARTUP items from running, and don't let any of the dlls load for today plugins.
The problem with mCubeSafeMode on WM5 is that services have to be certified signed to run in WM5, so even though it installs, its not allowed to run at boot time. I would have thought though that the un-certified builds on buzz/xda-dev would get around that?
I have a Jam now, no WM5 for me
Yep mCubeSafeMode would be great if it would only work with WM5 - but so far only Pocket Plus is able to do a SafeBoot on WM5 that I am aware of. I hoped I only missed another tool, but sad to say it seems to the only working version for WM5
SPB Pocket Plus
pocket plus has the option of booting in safe mode also

I know! Thats what I said in my first posting - but I want to get RID OF POCKET PLUS - that is the whole reason for this thread!
DreamBoxer: Are you running a certification-free WM5 ROM though? I actually talked to the mCubeSafe author about this, and the belief is services might actually need a Microsoft certificate, but he wasn't sure.... if it doesn't work with a cert-free ROM then I guess he was correct...
I had the same problem when I had a WM5 device I despirately wanted to NOT run SPB (too much bloat) but ultimately its the only one that had it...
You could install SPB and hunt around with memmaid and the registry to try and figure out how to just set the services only and remove everything else. You would have to install the service program, (maybe using memmaid) and move it up the service list to be first... in theory it should be do-able...

Problem with Removing Application

it seems my JAMin can not remove some applications like CA antivirus...
also i can not install VBruntime in my JAMin any Idea?
Going to safemode by SPB pocket plus 3.x
In the safemode you can uninstall almost every programs cleanly!!!
cause it doesn't load any plug-in when the windows start.
Although, now I seeking some program that can go to safemode in WM5 without use of pocket plus, but it seem to not have, yet. Because the pocket plus use a lot of memery, I don't like it, but I need it safemode function.
Or anyone have the safemode booting program without pocket plus, please share it hear.
thanx dude it works but my JAMin kills me when reboots, it takes 3 minutes
