It's a simple enough question but after a lot of looking there doesn't seem to be a readily available answer.
I have seen many programs that allow you to access network drives in the program over wi-fi and you can click and open files from within there and any associated programs run it.
What I can't seem to find is a network share type of approach where you make a network drive available in file explorer (say like Storage Card) so you can access files easier.
For example I can't see a way of playing more than one music track over the network without having a share you can create playlists from in the player
Typical - I've just found out that Resco Explorer seems to 'fill that gap'
Odd - Total commander put the directory there but it's empty --- share in Resco and the files appear

I'm still intrigued to know where it gets it's user ID and password because it seems to know one of mine and if I disable that ID in windows it can't access the server ???????????
Hi mate can you tell me how to set up a network ...i have braodband connection and i can connect my jam using wifi and surf the net....but i am not able to sertup a network between my computer and jam so that i can view files and play music!!!

Sorry if you know what shares and stuff is - but here goes:
Download something like resco explorer from resco.net and install it on your pocket pc
On your pc in file explorer right click on the folder you want to access then properties then sharing then share this folder and give it a name (say for example "name")
On the Resco program on the Pocket PC tap the 'hand under the box' icon - bottom right ; then map drive - now hopefully you should see your computer under 'computers near me' - click on it and you should see your share ('name') type these details in the box above \\server\name then click on share ( I don't know why but it only worked for me this way - clicking on the share in the drop down list didn't) - NOTE: 'server' = the name your pc you are trying to connect has --- the one shown in the list above the shares
Now this share will be available under network in the resco file explorer
The bonus is if you now go to something a little cleverer than media player - like tcpmp you will be able to type \\'server'\'name' into the top box of open file and access the network directly --- create playlists too
Only drawback is I found you need at least 400MHz PPC to stand a chance of playing audio OK directly from the network
As a final note drives on computers can have hidden shares denoted by $ there is also and admin hidden share set-up by windows that is the drive letter. This means you should be able to access the whole of your network drive by accesing share - 'Drive letter'$ ... For C this would be \\'server'\c$

is there any known tool for WM5 that will allow you to export a WM5 directory over the network? That would indeed be handy, especially if you have two people with such phones and no laptop to act as an intermediary system to share directories, not just individual files.
Yes I know that individual file sharing can happen by beaming it, but that is slow and cumbersome, being able to export an entire directory would be much more handy.

Thank you for this, I've been trying to work this out for a while, exactly what I needed is right here
Only problem I'm having is that I just don't seem to be able to see Samba shares on my Linux Server, all my other Windows PC's can see them just fine. Any ideas?

wow.. i just found out that you can connect direct to network shares and play divx movies without having to stream or convert.
Just go into TCPMP and do file open and put in the UNC of a network share such as \\server\video and then browse to the file you want
Now I am sorry if a lot of you are saying... well... duh... but I didnt even think of trying it and maybe there is at least someone else out there in the same boat.

first thing you need is tcpmp. Current release is 0.71 and you should be able to get it from http://www.tcpmp.com
This is a media player. Its small in size, supports a number of different formats and allows video full screen. So well worth looking at as an alternative to media player
Next you need you device connected to your network wirelessly.
Once you got all that load up tcpmp
then do file....open file from the menu
This will take you to a file open dialogue where you can naviagate around your pda. At the top of the screen is a space that shows you the current directory you are in. If you click on this bar you can overtype what is in there.
This allows you to use a unc style name to connect to a windows machine on your network.
So for example you have a movie you want to watch on a machine called server and you have created a windows file share called movies.
In the bar at the top you would type \\server\movies and hit the GO button
First time you try it will ask you for authentication details username, password and domain.
Enter that information and you will be browsing your file share. You can then select the movie that you want to watch and press OK

It's ok sorted my self, If anyone else ever wonders the same yes it was the user name and password that you use to boot into xp, I left the domain clear and it worked!
its soo cool only thing bad is every few mins it stops the movie for the buffer to catch up, which I could live with but if there is a setting to down sample the video so less buffering please let me know =)
The other way is to install Resco Explorer and Map PC shared folder,then every time the PDA connects to the LAN the folder will appear like a Storage Card in your File Explorer or any other applications.

Has anyone head of a way to trick the OS into thinking a directory is local when it's on the network?
The idea is to share a directory full of music for example, and be able to play any of the 3500 tracks from the popular music players over a 3G connection. Without having to deal with Orb or webpages or any of that nonsense. The interface is key...would be great to do this at the OS level.
There is no "trick" here.
When a directory is not on your actual hard drive the contents needs to be delivered by some protocol over the network.
This means that:
a) There has to be a server on the machine where the directory actually resides.
b) There has to be a matching client on the receiving device.
Presuming that your cell network does not limit ports and your PC has a static IP you can even use windows file sharing to access the content. Of course this would not be very secure over internet.
You could also use and FTP server.
As for "OS level" Win Mobile has the client for windows shares built in so that is about as native as you can go but like I said it is not something you want to use over the internet (unless you have not concerns what so ever about who is poking around your PC).

The question was aimed at seeing if anyone might know of a client-server application that existed which did the same or better job than WM natively, using windows shares. FTP rarely supports block-level reads, and I'm fairly certain the clients out there don't either (much less map).
Ports etc. would of course be forwarded, and the system would need to be secured. Or even read-only, it doesn't matter...it could just be a r/o samba share on a hardened box. Security can be a non-issue if done right.
At the moment I only see how I can "open path" from File Explorer. I don't see a way to map it though =/

I am not sure about mapping, never tried it but here is what I did manage:
First, in Total Commander (PPC version) you can save links to shares.
Now when I open a share with TC I get two things:
1) The transfer is much faster than with the built in explorer (even though there is no change in the connection, the explorer just seems to pause to "think"
2) When I double click on a file which is associated with a program, say an MP3 TC knows to launch the program and give it access to the file without copying it to device first.
I have never tried opening a network file from "open dialog" of a player directly though.
Ahh, okay. Yeah, problem is when trying to open say, a playlist of files. I could see the possibilities of possibly streaming video this way ad-hoc, but without mapping, playing lots of music is pointless. Thanks though.
I found that Resco Explorer can map a file share. I will try it out when I get home and am able to temporarily open a hole in my firewall.

Iv got a network HardDrive attached to my router and i can access it by typing \\STORAGE\ in my computer. I was then able to right click one of the folders and then map it as drive Z which appears in My Computer now. Iv done this for all my computers.
Is it possible to do this with the Touch HD
I have done but used Resco Explorer to do so. It also took several goes to get the syntax correct - I seem to recall I didn't need to reference the workgroup but I did need to get the name of the share absolutely correct.
It can be done, so stick with it. This was over wifi incidentally
Total Commander 2.51 works great (not to mention free) on the HD and the nice part is you can view two file explorer windows at once. Makes it super easy to drag and drop from a NAS drive right onto the HD.
will resco explorer or total commander be able to run/open files from the network harddrive or will the files have to be copied to the device?

I have got same problem. I am using Synology NAS Server and have video folder as a default share. Ip address is 192.168.0.99 and server name is
MYDISKSTATION.
On my Touch HD I'm using Resco Explorer. When I click on Network -> add new folder it doesn't let me add video folder using either name or Ip.
I've tried \\192.168.0.99\video and \\MYDISKSTATION\video and none of them works. it says not available.
Could someone enlighten me on this area please.

Does anyone know of a program that can do this? There is one for the iphone called "air sharing" my boss uses it, its pretty handy since i always forget to bring a mini usb cable into work with me and the one i keep in work always goes missing for days at a time.

You could always run a ftp server on your phone like mochaftp (which is freeware).
Another way, which requires no extra software, is bluetooth ftp, and that integrates well with vista desktops/ laptops.

It has a build in LAN explorer(pluginns) that deeply browses you network. Plus you get all the goodys such as cut, paste, move and full access to files over your LAN.
It does work better and faster than the fruitphone crap, and its free.

Sorry for borrowing you thread but what about some software that works the other way around? I mean like enabling Wifi on your diamond and then you could access it from your laptop like ad-hoc and then see the files on the diamond from your laptop?
Using Resco or total commander lets him grab desktop files FROM his device, but wont let him easily transfer files TO the device, unlike Airshare.
In fact, to read a network share from your smartphone you dont need any 3rd party software at all. Just go to PIE and type in file://<networkname>/
e.g. file://mydesktop/
in the address bar, and you will be browsing your network shared folders.

You can map drives over to your HD2 in order to view video's and play mp3's ect... Get Resco Explorer ( http://www.resco.net/pocketpc/explorer/ ) as it has a Network Browser that will allow you to view your network and map drives.

running resco explorer seen network item but i couldn´t get connection to my pc name and a shared directory (ex. \\pcname\$c) must i disable firewalls or anything else to get communication established?
Normally you'll need to disable the firewall on your system (if it's running windows firewall as it does sometimes affect the connection).
Just double checking the method that you are using to connect, with Explorer open do the following:
Click on Menu - File -Network - Map Drive. Now give a few moments and it should show you a list of "Computers Near Me". Once you see your computer you should be able to click the plus sign next to it and automatically see all of it's shares.
Also just to double check, you should be trying to connect to "\\pcname\C$" and not \\pcname\$C" although i'd recommended not going for the root of your drive and just mapping a different shared folder.
I am sharing files from a NAS over LAN too. Using Resco Explorer 2010 to browse the files works great for me. Actually, being able to browse Windows share is the reason I paid for Resco Explorer.
If you have another PC, try confirming you can really access the share from another Windows PC.

I use resco, and although I can manually map shares buy typing in \\comp\drive, and they stay mapped and work fine, I've never yet managed to get resco to actually list the shares in the my network section. no idea why, all my machines are discoverable etc.
