First time buyer of GPS unit and I need help choosing the right one. Thanks.
Btw, has to work in the UK.
I wouldn't dare say flawless , but the last 2 times i went to GB i didnt experience any problems with my current GPS receiver which is the
Rikaline Bluetooth GPS receiver 6033
this model is generally 20-30euros more expensive than the standard ones but it uses an advanced chipset to even get fixes in buildings and tunnels and can maintain more connections at once.
Manufacturers Site
Cheap one from www.mobilefun.co.uk
http://www.mobilefun.co.uk/product/8590.htm
£40! and works a treat.
Probably not as good as the Rikaline or the Holux 236 which is by far the best i've tried but for they are nearly double the price
Even uses the same kind of charger as the Wizard so effectively you get a free in-car charger for you PPC thrown in.
I successfully use a generic Nemerix based GPS mouse from adapt. You can find these rather cheap GPS device in many varities (lots of OEM manufacturers) on eBay.
In conjunction with TT5.2 it works like a charm.
Any suggestions for a good light GPS to fasten in the helmet. I have plans to track my routes during mountainbike tours.
GPS...
What a topic...
I have spent some time investigating the options for me...
I am a newbie on the PPC front and I am after my first GPS set up too...
OK everyone points at TomTom as the best option...is this so?
Any feedback will be greatly received and if I do go for it, I will probably go for their bundle...
For those running TTN5 on thier Wizards, please advise the speed and any issues...many thanks...

TomTom is also my #1 for road navigation.
What are the best choices for free-time navigation? Some candidates:
Pathaway, http://www.pathaway.com/pathaway3wm.htm, WM5 compatible?
OziExplorer, http://www.oziexplorer.com/
cant fault the holux 236
Nemerix
Hi,
I am using this GPS mouse (NEMERIX V3.0 Ultra Low Power Chipset). Simple installation, simple use, long battery life, cute size - my favourite!
U can get it e.g. here:

Im using a BT77 Bluetooth GPS. It provides a really great signal even inside, however I have had problems with the wizard, in that I have to drop and then re-partner the device in bluetooth, everytime I want to use it, but Im currently thinking its the MS Bluetooth stack at fault and not the Device, anyone have a similar experience ?
Hi,
I already have the tomtom wired gps receiver which i use with my ipaq 2210. I know the receiver connector wont fit onto my wizard but is there any kind of adapter that will change it from ipaq to wizard (min usb i think).
cheers

Afraid not. Wired receivers will not work on Wizard/K-Jam etc.. full stop. you need to get a BT GPS receiver.
I picked a cheap one up from www.mobilefun.co.uk for £40 and works a treat. 5 fixes even in car glove box
The Tomtom Bt Gps is the easiest one to connect to the wizard, other brands u may need to set comm ports in Tomtom navigator.
So far I tested Holux SIRF3, Tomtom MK2, Leadtek sirf3, all were working fine.
my Tomtom MKIII works perfectly with Wiz.
I'm using a BT880 picked up on ebay (new) for £30.
Works fine with my qtek (imate rom) and tomtom5.
hi, got an exec and been using it for a year now and still loving it as of october i am going to be driving a taxi so, wondered what peoples advice would be, is the exec reliable and usable enough to use as sat nav for my taxi? iv trawled through the forum and read lots about the tom tom issues and im wondering whether or not to just buy an independant tom tom device and keep my exec free as as phone? i will be using my o2 bluetooth headset whilst driving and will need to be able to take calls on it.
also if you think i should stay true to my exec and tomtom her up, any suggestions on where to buy from and best gps unit etc? seen THIS on ebay, was going to use a copy of my mates tom tom but, thinking maybe it would be more reliable to just buy a genuine copy????
many thanks in advance
Hi bobby,
To be honest Tomtom works perfectly on the XDA Exec. I have a MDA Pro(T-mobile version) and i have no problems. At first there were some problems with trying to setup the bluetooth gps recievers with tomtom but that was before version 5.21 was released.
Using the phone at the same time as running tomtom is easily done. the gps reciever does not interfere with a bluetooth headset whatsoever. I have a sony erricsson HBH-300 bluetooth headset with my MDA Pro and i always take calls while using tomtom.
As it goes with the retail version of tomtom the only difference you will get is that you will have the option to subscribe to live traffic updates.
The item you have seen in ebay looks quite good. i have the same gps reciever as that deal which i know is really good but as for the holder you may want to consider getting a holder specific for the Exec as you may want to put it in landscape mode when not using tomtom.
Here are a couple of options for you for the GPS holders and recievers:

Hope this helps you, if you would like a couple of pictures of my setup please let me know.
Been using TomTom on T-Mobile MDA Pro for 9 weeks...upgraded from HP iPAQ 6515 and loving it!!!!!
The screen quality is far superior and it works like a charm
I've been using both TomTom and iGo on my Qtek9000, they work very well. I think I prefer iGo, but it's just a matter of taste I guess.
Make sure to get version 5.21 of TomTom, otherwise a bluetooth GPS reciever won't work.
hi, I use my universal, mda pro, as a sat nav and it works perfectly no issues whatsoever. I'm running tt5.21 with map of uk plus v632 the gps reciever is holux gpslim 236 which is brilliant I highly recommand this one as to the mount I have pdahut holder which does its job but there is 2 probs with it..putting the device in and out of the mount involves two hands and the stability. plus the mount is passive one. all after all is a good combination I'm very happy with it. I cannot comment on using bt headset cos I m not using yet but I am experiencing huge lags answering the phone while navigating..I use wired headset that came with the universal.
cheers, cudo
muchos gracias senors 8) thought i was gonna have to go and fork out for a whole new unti for a moment
ps. 'itwasntme' if you could mail me a pic or two of your set up il be forever in your debt mate
Hi all,
Anyone using BT GPS?
If so, which one, how do you find it, and what software are you running.
Thanks Guys..
Ratzz,
I use a holux unit, coupled with Garmin Que and GPS Proxy. It only works well wih the tytn rom. I tried it with the DOPOD rom but it keeps freezing the screen.
Another note, Using the tytn rom has eliminated my alignment issues with regards to the screen.
regards
TomTom 6 & a Fortuna GPSlim.
Takes a little while to sort itself out when TomTom starts, but seems fine after a couple of minutes.
I cant use Tom Tom cause of the malaysian Map not being available
I'm using Holux GPSlim 236 with Destinator 6 when on the road and OziExplorer when roaming in nature.
yes I do
Using a Xloc and tomtom 6
Work great
Holux GPSlim 236 with Tomtom 5 (I am about to upgrade) and PTGmap for topo maps in Garmin format.
Using Destinator 6 (yep, I work in Destinator) with a large variety of BT GPS: GNS, Royaltek, Globalsat, Emtec and some others.
Do not forget that after you pair a GPS using MS BT manager, you also need to enable an outgoing portfor this connection.
I'm using Tom Tom 6 with Hamlet gps BT and it's ok!!!

I am using Iguidance with the Globsat 338 Its ok, the only problem is that if a call comes through, you have to restart the program.
Which one is the fastest and smallest SirfIII-based BT GPS unit you would suggest for TomTom?
Fortuna Clip-on for me, used with iGo on my m3100, although I have also used it with tomtom on previous pda's. Will upgrade tomtom and put that on a memory card shortly.
I'm using a Navilock BT338 GPS Mouse (SIRF3), which works perfectly together with my MDA3,MDApro and MDA Vario2 as well! I'm using it with TT5.21 for more than a year, and will upgrade to TT6 (just tested, works fine too!) soon.
The navilock keeps contact to satellites which are not seen/found by several others, can even be kept in your pocket and works without problems behind thermo-windows in cars! It is very small and is working over a whole day without loading, standby more than a week, and ist very easy to set up (connect to COM4).
Hello all.
I have a Cingular branded 8125.
At this time, I have Molski's 3.0.0.0 AKU 3.2 Rom loaded
I have also tried to clock the cpu to 240mhz
It seems the phone does NOT handle multi tasking very well.
The gps works well if you do not ask the phone to do much such as make or take a call. At times even without calls on over the phone while the gps is running. It just starts to crawl very slow, screen re-draws become very slow.
I have tried several GPS applications that run just fine on normal pda's such as the Dell Axim x30-x51v line, these all have 624mhz cpu's.
I have even used these gps applications on the Dell Axim x5 300mhz pda with a Socket Bluetooth cf card without this problem.
My main goal for this phone was to have both, mobile phone with mobile gps
Does anyone have a suggestion on my next move?
I use Bluetooth gps receivers and the software I have now is:
iGuidance 2.1
Dell NavteQ GPS
Belkin GPS "similar as the Dell"
PocketMap Navigator R3 3.12 USA
MS Streets & Trips 2006
Well, try to overclock it.. it really helpd me!
I have also tried to clock the cpu to 240mhz
What speed works for you?

Try a Molski AKU 2.x rom and watch the difference. iGuidance doesn't like AKU 3.x. It's not the GPS unit because the spoken directions kept up with the positioning, it was the graphics that wouldn't move at all or, if they did, once every few minutes. You can use AKU 3.x or you can have working GPS software, your choice. Also, note that iGuidance is now up to 3.0.1.
GPS Software Working With NO Problems!!
I've been using the OnCourse 5 system with a BT-339 SiRF-lll receiver. I usually overclock my 8125 to either 228 or 240 while using the receiver and mapping software. I'm also using Molski's 2.26 30MB ROM.
One other thing I do before firing it up is that I disable all my other Today plugins and reboot -- loading ONLY the navigational software. This seems to free up the resources needed to not only run the GPS, but to also handle phone calls, as well.
However -- YMMV -- depending on how much available memory your phone has otherwise.
Thanks for the input.
Looks like I shall change roms to Molski's 2.26 and give it another try
Anyone has tried using a bluetooth GPS thingie with the Herald and any apps like Destinator or TomTom?
If yes what was your opinion?
My main questions are on:
What app you used and with which GPS hardware?
Battery consumption
CPU/Mem usage and how well the app run
^_^ tnx a million.
Im interested in this as well. Does anyone use any GPS software for their Wing?
I use TomTom 6 and Route66 with a Holux GPSlim236...
The battery consumption depends on the time I use it... Long usage time means more battery drain.
The CPU/Mem usage I'm not sure, but the apps run ok without visible delay between the real position and the position indicated by the program.
EDIT: Forgot to tell onde thing... In TomTom6, the more POI's you select the bigger is the delay between the real position and the one indicated by the program.
I'm using iGO My Way 2006 with this GPS mouse and I'm very satisfied with it.
Have used the software so far in Germany in Netherlands and it didnt fail me at all.
Speed is great on my XDA terra (and before on my XDA neo) which is important,
because some navigation software are running slow on those 200MHz devices.
It's important because on shorter roads and lots of corners the display scrolls
way to slow while you are actually already in the corner.
The voice commands are usually exact and in time just not the display.
Right now I'm testing Navigon MobileNavigator. The map looks nicer, but it is slower than iGO. Can't tell much about TomTom, Route66 and Destinator.
Haven't got my hands on them yet.
I'm using a Holux M1000 GPS Bluetooth Receiver with Destinator 6 and Destinator 7.
Destinator 7 freezes sometimes, but I think it's related to the "Stand by" configuration. With Destinator 6 it works fine.
Regards,
Rodolpho
Well, I'm not yet on WM6, but TOMTOM6 works great with my herald, with a lot of POI, without any delays, and i use a MTK chipset's bluetooth GPS receiver.
I am told that WM6 is faster than WM5 for softwares such as tomtom, so...
Wing/WM6/TomTom6 here. After the pagepool hack (6MB), and after removing most of the stuff from the startup folder (my5aves in particular), TomTom works just fine, not a problem.
Battery life is satisfactory, much better than Axim x30 for sure. You might have to shut down huuuuuge programs like PocketIE manually, before starting TomTom.
Ask some specific questions, please. I'm too lazy to write a complete review this time
I have a WM6 Wing with a Holux 1000 BT GPS. I can't seem to get Tomtom 6 to work on it. The program just can't find the receiver. iGuidance 4 works fine even though it is a bit sluggish. Can anyone help me? I think I've tried two different types of BT GPS receivers and still no luck.
I am running TT6 on WM6 Herald.
TT6 is not that smooth as on my previous Qtek 9000...although I am overclocking to 247 and running on 8MB PP. Maybe its caused by my 4GB MicroSD card I dont know!
Also I have a few "bugs" on my TT, voice instructions sometimes do not match the visual commands and the daylight/night colors function is reversed.
Have reinstalled TT on a fresh WM6 installation with the same results...
Will see now if there is a difference between version 6.01 and 6.03...
And yes I have paid for my TT6 !
HTC4350 here with Holux GPSlim 236
Working with MapFactor Navigator 6, GPS Utilities and Oziexplorer just fine
Also tried GPS Tuner but it won't start because it needs more free memory, though i haven't yet tried the pagepool change.
Other than that, works perfect

Try 6MB PP. No glitches at all, as long as I exit Internet Explorer first. And of course removing everything but btdwake, CapNotify, poutlook and WiFiInit from Windows/Startup. I think I'll remove poutlook, too and see if that stops ActiveSync from starting all by itself all the time.

None of that here, using 6.030 (8320).
I am using TT6 with WM6 without any problems! And it runs fast!
My BT GPS receiver is a cheap Sirf3.

Using TT6 (6.0.3.0 8320) with a TomTom BT GPS and it works great, never had to configure the GPS, TT always find it. But I can't get OziExplorer working with the TT GPS.
Thanks
Hello all,
I own a tmobile wing..
and am also planning to use gps on it..and plan to buy the holus m1000 as well since many of you already use it.. but when looking up prices on tomtom6.. it's usually around 150.00-250.00
can you guys please tell me of a site where you found it relatively cheap.. ?
