Get Google Local (GLM) Satellite Images on Cingular 8125 - 8125, K-JAM, P4300, MDA Vario General

EDIT 11/1/06 Satellite images don't work on the new version of IBM and GMM. However, using IBM version ibm-weme-wm50-arm-midp20_6.1.0.20060727-102926 and GMM 1.3.2 it works really well. Quick, no freezing like with the default midlet manager. The 20060727 version of the IBM manager adds the softkey buttons, so it's way better.
EDIT: 8/18/06, process works with IBM Software 6.1 and GMM version 1.3.0!
Been looking for a while and haven't seen a step by step, so here goes:
- Basically you need to install a second Midlet Manager onto you 8125. It's made by IBM and can be downloaded here.
http://www14.software.ibm.com/webap...04-06+13:40:42.143397R&S_TACT=104CBW71&S_CMP=
You'll have to sign up for an account. Then download this exe: CLDC 1.1/MIDP 2.0 for Windows Mobile 5.0/ARM
- Once you've installed the exe on your computer, browse to:
C:\Program Files\IBM\WEME\runtimes\61\wm50-arm-midp20\
There is a cab file there-> weme-wm50-arm-midp20_6.1.0.20060317-111429
- Extract the cab file and transfer its contents to your device. I suggest either: a) \Storage Card\Program Files\J9\MIDP20\ or b) \Program Files\J9\MIDP20\
- After copying the cab files contents to your device, run the "emulator" file in the bin folder.
- While it's running, use your web brower and navigate to www.google.com/glm. Pick Generic -> Advanced MIDP2. it should ask you where you want to save the ".jad" file. Save it to "My Device" NOT "My Documents" on your device. Name it something simple, like "glm".
- Go back to Midlet HQ and choose "install". Type in the file name like shown here http://www.winmobiletech.com/032006Midlets/J9InstallLocal.bmp.png
but replace "a" with glm if you named the file that.
- It will connect to the internet and install the Google GLM midlet. Tada!
To get sat images, you'll just have to run GLM through this new midlet manager, and not the one that comes with the device. no bigy. Enjoy.

thanks for the links... But could you clarify some things. What are you talking about replacing "a" replace what "a" where?
Also I get an error when I try to Save to My device from explorer. Don't know if that is normal or not. Could you explain this a little better?

Why do you need the second midlet manager? Java installs fine on my KJam
-Mc

For some reason, the default midlet manager of the wizard (8125) will not allow you to view the satellite images from GLM, hence this big ordeal.
hbkdinobot: Replace "a" with "x" just refers to renaming the file so it's easy to find it later. When you download the file it wants to name it something extremely large. I'm just suggesting you rename the file to something simple and easy to type in and remember.
I'm not sure why you're not able to save the file. keep trying!

Why not just use "Virtual Earth Mobile"? One install for SP and PPC and has Sat and Maps. http://www.viavirtualearth.com/vve/Gallery/VEMobile.ashx

The fact that it's neither very stable (had it lock up several times) nor as usable as GLM may have something to do with it. I tried VEM, hoping that it would be a good substitute on my Javaless T-Mobile USA MDA, but promptly uninstalled it after much frustration. Instead, I flashed the MDA with the new Imate ROM that has Java in it, and Google Local Mobile now runs on my MDA just fine. It may not display the satellite images with the Intent JVM, but it's perfectly stable and usability is much better.

I installed the VEM on juiceppc's recommendation, we'll see how it works out.

VEM seems to have very old image data compared to GLM...

try this http://www.mgmaps.com/

On my t-mobile MDA (with the 2.17 custom ROM) the IBM midlet manager doesn't seem to work with glm (asks me if permission to use airtime but then gives me a blank screen).
The midlet manager that comes with the custom ROM can run both glm and mgmaps, but neither show satellite imagery.

I'm having the same problem as Sorcerer and I am running the 2.17.7.2 WWE ROM..anyone know what the issue is?

Works perfectly on my 8125. Thanks Jizzay1!

ROMkitchen are out of date..... Who wants to change????

Hello XDA users....
I think you know it all, that the ROMkitchen is a fine application to get our device nearly perfect.
But the ROMkitchen is out of date. This means many applications aren´t not in the actual version. Therefore Auburnham and I thought to update the applications.
The problem is, that the amount of added applications to the kitchen is to big to make this happen by us two. Because of this problem I´m searching for some people, which wants to help.
Another problem is, that you need for this a device that haven´t got installed that piece of software. This means that when you want to help me with Phonext for example, you must have a device without any version of Phonext installed.
So, if you are going to help me make a snapshot of your device with the ssnap - Application.
Install the software.
Make again an Snapshot of your device with the ssnap - Application.
Send these two files to [email protected] with inforamtion about the program you have installed and the exact Version you have installed.
When I´ve got analyzed the two files i will reply to you with a wishlist of files that have been created on your device. After sending me the files, i can update the kitchen....
IF there are any quesions or anything else, feel free to contact me....
Regards
Stefan
Good Idea :
I'd be happy to contribute.
Tell me which application you want me to install and I'll do it provided that I find the procedure (that I've seen being posted elsewere in this forum).
NB : I'm using XDA I with a Frenchy 3.16 and be stuck with it :evil: ; so there is no chance for me to re-build a new a geniun 3.16 Rom again.
My XDA is all up and running.
I've overcome my Language FRA error message after purchasing a SD card reader and loading the ROM through the bootloader. 8)
Now, I'm about to install ttn 3 on my XDA. Do you want list it in your kitchen ?
What do you need exactly ?
I would be happpy to help. I am a regular user of your site and appreciate the effort that has been put into it.
I understand the effort needed to keep things working and up to date.

I'm in!!
Just let me know what you need and when and I will maker every endevour to help.
Thanks for all you do

I've sent these snapshots off to Stefan, along with the files that I thought might be necessary for these programs. This is going to be great for all of us, but a lot of work for Stefan. We all owe him a great deal, so take him out for a nice meal the next time you see him.

I don't want to make this any more complicated than it is, but for some programs, it just doesn't make any sense to install to the XDA memory. Most of the media players and "Misc" programs just take up too much unnecessary device memory when they would work just as well on the SD Card (if that's available).
The problem is that those huge programs require just a few small files to be placed on the device itself. So after installing a few of these types of programs, you've used up a lot of device memory from these small files, even though you installed the program to your SD Card.
Is there a way to alter the kitchen a bit to allow cooking of the necessary device files only, and allow the user to later install the program to the SD Card (being careful not to overwrite the files in ROM with files in RAM)?
For instance, with the TomTom program, if you start with a clean ROM and SD card, take a snapshot, then install the program to your SD card, then take another snapshot, you could determine what files need to be on the device, and what files don't need to be on the device, and allow users to either cook the entire program or just the necessary files in the ROM. (Note: This is a good example of a run-on sentence). Would this be a difficult feature to add to the kitchen?

Maybe the esiest Option is adding a new Select Point for the kitchen like "misc", "System Tools", "Phone" ....
This means having the programs double in the kitchen, but how cares.
I don't know exactly, but when you install a program to the SD-Card, could you select the part where to place it?
If yes, this could be a big problem. Many of the programs store the path in the registry.
If no, i could also provide a ZIP-file, where the rest of the programfiles are in, hust to unzip to the Storagecard.....

I believe this really depends on (1) how well the program was written, and (2) if you can install the program with CabInst (i.e. has a cab installation).
For example, I try to keep my SD Card organized and tidy so if I use CabInst I install the program to an appropriate folder on the SD Card. If I have to install the program from the desktop, I install the program to the SD Card root, then try to move the program to an appropriate folder and update the shortcut. Most of the time this works without even changing any registry entries, but sometimes it doesn't. Two examples from the above list of applications are AOL Instant Messenger 2.0 and Pocketmind PocketMusic 3.0. To function correctly, they both need to be in their original installation folders on the SD Card.
But perhaps the best solution would be to have an associated .zip file to go on the SD Card, as you suggested.
Shawn
Now the kitchen should be up 2 date again.
Only missing is PocketConsole and the Part "Software that needs to register"
So happy cooking and again Thx a lot to all users that helped me.....
Stefan
A Windows-way for cooking a ROM would be great for two reasons: 1) Don't hassle your server with lots of traffic and 2) Practical. Advanced users could cook a ROM without having a PC with Unix.
For example I tried cooking the Spanish version of the ROM and not all the programs I chose were installed and the worst thing is that the boot logo was just garbage, it was showing program code on the screen as a logo

Marton

Ok. Fixed the problem with the bootscreen.....
Tried also adding as much application, and all have been installed.
Can you tell me, what files / programs are missing?
No one else told me that there have been a problem wirth this ROM. I think it's because of the situation that most of the useres are using WM2003 ROMS....
You can also use the kitchen under "Windows" just have to set up a Cyguin environment on your system....
Also i didn't know how many Kitchen's are implemented by other users, but mine one is the only "official". You can't believe that everyone would be able to set it up.......
Stefan
Thanks Stefan!!!!!!
Now it seems to work but if EzWAP is selected, it throws a Log error when trying to cook...
Cheers,
Marton
P.S.: Do you know if a Spanish WM2003 exists?
Edit: This is the error:
Cannot fit files in given sections
Error splitting files
Just cooked a ROM... I selected the "Windows Mobile XDA" Boot Screen and now it is not garbage anymore but now it shows mirrored and upside down...
Any ideas?

CAB file version issues

Hi everybody!
(hi doctor nick)
I'm having a few little issues with CAB files on my pda2k.
maybe this should be in the blue angel thread, but it's to do with application development, so i put it here. I also tried the forum search, with no results.
i'm wanting to use all my customised cab files that i made for my XDA2, and use them on my new device, the PDA2K.
all of the cabs work, and all of my applications run.
however, upon installing the cab, a message comes up on my pda and says "the program you have installed may not display properly because it was designed for a previous version of windows mobile software"
i've checked the version nifo in all my .inf files.
i've compared them to newer cab files that don't give me that message.
the inf files look fine.
is this a registry setting perhaps, that i could change?
like i said, all the apps work, i just want to stop it from giving me that warning.
does anyone have any ideas?
thanks !
The warning is just about what it says: You are trying to run older (ie now specifically designed for SE) software.
Noithing to worry about when thing work as supposed.
You can get rid of the message by setting the OS verion inse the CAB files higher (but you need ie. WinCE Cab Manager by OCP Software for that) .
i know there isn't anything to worry about. the apps work.
it's just that for the purpose of creating an SOE, i don't want customers to have to click "ok" everytime they reset their device, all apps must install without prompt from beginning to end.
I have winCE cab manager, and have set the version and build number higher in the inf file, yet i can't seem to get rid of the message.
any other ideas ?
you have to set the lower version number to th version of WinCE youre using now.
Set some 'very high' value to the higher version number
There is another thread on this somewhere . . .thats where I got this info from
yeah, tried that too
i sset my version details like this:
[CEDevice]
ProcessorType=0
UnsupportedPlatforms="JUPITER","HPC"
VersionMin=3.0
VersionMax=10.00
BuildMin=0
BuildMax=100000
still no good.
anyways, i'll keep searching for the related thread. i new there would be such a discussion in here, just a matter of finding it.
I think it was versionMin=4.21

thanks M4io,
that's the link i was looking for
ok, there seems to be something wrong here.
either that, or i'm doing it wrong (highly unlikely :lol: )hahha.
anyway, i've tried all different versions, i've tried all different build's.nothing. still won't work.
so i downloaded the latest operator settings for my device.
that cab ran no problems, so i extracted the inf, then i copied all the version info from that one, and dumped it into the inf that i'm trying to package. ran the cab on the device, and i still get that error !!
how can that be?
there must be something else in my cab, that governs version conflicts.
anyone
Hi Twinair,
please try to set it as follows:
[CEDevice]
ProcessorType=0
UnsupportedPlatforms="JUPITER","HPC"
VersionMin=3.0
VersionMax=4.21
BuildMin=0
BuildMax=-536870912
buzz
I've tried with the above settings buzz, but it still doesn't work.
does the CEsetup.dll, or setup.dll have anything to do with version control perhaps ?
could be, that you should use your own setup.dll
I really don't know now... I've never made a cab which was not complaining about the older version... (
Looked for it also in internet, but found nothing...
But if you download the trial ver of OCP CabManager, you can unpack cabs for SE and take a look there... my trial period is expired now...
Maybe you can try to use setup.dll out of such cab...
buzz
damn, still not getting anywhere.
i've put in the correct version info, i've used a setup.dll file from a known working cab file, i have the latest full version of cab manager.
i'm fresh out of ideas
back to the drawing board.
if i figure it out, i'll let you know.
This is what MSDN says at
http://msdn.microsoft.com/library/d...dnwm2k3/html/screen_orientation_awareness.asp
Installation Warning Messages
When a legacy application is installed on a Windows Mobile-based Pocket PC capable of screen rotation, the warning message will appear
This dialog is to advise the user that the application they are about to use may not be aware of square screens or screen rotation, and may not display properly in landscape mode. This dialog will only appear if the VersionMin value (which specifies the lowest OS revision number your app supports) file is less than 4.21.
Since setting VersionMin to 4.21 will prevent your application from installing on older Windows Mobile-based Pocket PCs, it is recommend that you disable this warning message by setting the BuildMax value (which is typically unused) equal to the following values:
BuildMax values
0xA0000000 Application supports square screens (240x240 pixels).
0xC0000000 Application supports screen rotation.
0xE0000000 Application supports square screens and screen rotation.
These parameters can be changed by editing the [CEDevice] section of the INF file which cabwiz uses to generate your CAB file.
so
[CEDevice]
VersionMin=4.21
VersionMax=4.99
BuildMax=0xE0000000
Should do the trick[/b]
@Shikra
...perfect man, let me test it... )))

some of the files you've attached say tmobile on them.. does that brand the phone? will i have t-mobile popping up on every app i open. I bought my jam from dubai and using it on cingular.. i'm also on the WWE rom, just wondering if these .cab's are compatible.
The cab files are compatible with all HTC Magician machines (i.e. i-mate JAM, O2 XDA mini, Qtek s100, T-Mobile Compact, Dopod 818, etc.) and will not pop up any brand or logo after installation.
thanks for that info, i will do these updates in about an hour. thanks again

In fact, downloading works in PIE. Just download the file (it'll show as download.php, correct) and then rename it to whatever it should be with the extension that it's supposed to have. Alternatively, when trying to download via PIE, in a "Download" popup dialog tap "Change" and change the name of the file to what it is supposed to be. After your download is completed, use your file explorer to locate the file and change the extension of the file from .php to a correct one.

Aha! Thnx very much for that info mata!
But how does this work?! If I want to install for instance the Camera Wizard to update my camera, where do I have to install it? I asume it has to overwrite the original camera app, or can I really put it everywhere I want? And to make it clear... does this hard reset your device?!

Update to MIDLET Manager?

Hi
I've experienced lots of problems with the Wizard's midlet manager, especially when trying to use Opera Mini.
It sees I've got a working connection, but when loading any web page I get an error message - critical error kind of thing.
I hard reset my Vario several times hoping it would solve the problem... in vain.
has any update to the Midlet Manager been released? And where to get it from? I checked the TAO site, but no downloads are available from their site (they seem to ship direct to HTC and the likes).
Alternatively, what is the work around? I want to use the Midlet for Google maps and other midlets. Thanks
Download the attached zip file but DO NOT unzip it. Overwrite the one in \Windows on your PDA. Once your done, start up Midlet Manager then Menu -> About and confirm the following version numbers...
Runtime MIDP 2.0: v10.1.7.551 (Build 20060317)
That's the version I'm running and it works just fine with Google Local Maps and Opera Mini.
If after performing the above you still can't get Opera Mini working properly then I'd suggest uninstalling Opera Mini (tap and hold the icon and select uninstall) and then visit http://mini.opera.com in Pocket Internet Explorer and download Opera Mini again. If that page says something about recognising your device as an iPaq of some kind then just ignore it.
You may just want to scrap tao's manager and go for IBM's http://www.winmobiletech.com/sekalaiset/IBMJ9MIDP.zip
I haven't used it, but some people like it. It displays satelite images in google local too.

The zip file came straight from a fresh install of a 2.24 ROM
I've now tried the first solution (the update to Tao's MIDLET) and the midlet manager freezes then crashes as a result!

...and overwrite the ones found in...
\Application Data\Tao\intent
and
\Windows
I've just done that, but in vain. the Midlet Manager still freezed then crashes. I can't even uninstall my old version of Opera mini and / or install the new one. The Midlet Manager crashes before I can do anything...
Any suggestion?
Maybe I should go back to the original Manager?
Navigate to...
\Application Data\Tao\intent\app\jam\midlets
...and delete the operamini folder and see what happens then.
If Midlet Manager still locks up then by all means replace rofs_target.zip and target.img.zip back with the versions you had originally... assuming you did back them up first
Just out of interest, what ROM version are you running and what Midlet Manager version did you have prior to all this messing around?
Thanks Keitaro.
My ROM is T-Mobile's UK ROM 1.6.2.4 - I am waiting for T-Mobile to release the new ROM.
Maybe that's why the updated Midlet manager does not work.
I did not backup the target.img.zip file unfortunately.
Could anybody on the T-Mobile's 1.6.2.4 ROM upload their Windows/target.img.zip file here please?
I could then downgrade my Midlet Manager.
thanks
You can always install the IBM Manager.
It's not as pretty, but it works.

TotalCommander for WM6?

I'm not liking the fact that I can't see filename extensions while browsing in File Explorer, so I searched this forum, and quickly learned of the freeware app called TotalCommander. Everyone on this forum that's using it seems to love this powerful app, which sounds like it will do what I want plus much more.
So I found the 2.5 version (which is the latest version I can find), downloaded it onto my HTC-PPC6800, and executed it. I immediately got a message that the program was not for portable PC devices. What gives? Is it that this version is only for WM5? Is there a later version out there that I just haven't found yet?
If I'm just not able to use TotalCommander, is there another similar app that I could install? I truly would like to accomplish two things...first, as I mentioned earlier, I would like to see filename extensions. Second, I would like for there to be a way for me to see the entire filename (or at the very least, a lot more than the dozen or so characters I can see now). I have many files that the first 15 or 20 characters are the same, and I can't tell the difference between them when I look them up on File Explorer!
Once again, I very much appreciate the help!
Try CE FileCommander 1.0.
there are a few versions of the 2.5 beta 3 they made
try the first one on this list, the others are for other processor types or older versions of win ce and

Thanks so much for the reply...but unfortunately, that's the exact one I used! I removed it and re-copied it back to the phone (I created a folder called TotalCommander under the Program Files folder, and pasted it in there), and tried to install it again, but I got the same error message.
Any more ideas???
gsfinder works good....It shows the filename and the extentions...
I got Total Commander/CE v2.5 PB3 from here:
http://www.freewareppc.com/download/utilities/totalcommander.shtml
It's been working fine on my Mogul. I used the ActiveSync install.
If you're downloading the .exe, you have to run it on your PC, not your 6800.
yeah the reason you get that error could be because you are trying to run an activesync install pc exe on a pocketpc
No way! Wow...as I said...I'm a newbie to this!
Okay then...I ran the .exe on my PC and it said that it installed it on my portable PC device via ActiveSync, but there were no messages on my PPC6800, nor can I find any sign of TotalCommander.
I'm sure I've missed something...can someone tell me what it is???
You've installed the Activesync software that came with the phone, right?
You run the .exe
You sync your phone.
Then it installs when you sync.
Not sure how it works with Vista, but that's how it works with XP.
Frankenbike:
That was it!
I swear...there's like twenty different ways to install stuff on these WM devices, huh?
But it's in there and working like a champ!
Thanks to you and everyone else for your help with this!
(Whatever did we do before we had forums? Read the manual???)
dont think there are 20 5 maybe
