what wud you have after a mda compact? - JAM, MDA Compact, S100 General

if you had to get something else what would you go for and why?

At the moment, everything looks like the HTC Hermes, which seems great. UMTS, Wifi and keyboard at the size of the Wizard, a bit thinner though. Drawback: Micro SD Slot for which currently only cards up to 500 MB are available. Very annoying.
The HTC Trinity is said to be released by the end of the year and will have GPS on board with the same features of the Hermes. Design seems to be very nice too. Nothing known about the card slot though.

1Gb now. That'll do for me, but 2Ggb would be nicer for music AND GPS.

nothin yet! they all seem to be gettin fatter and slower
till i see a 'true' worthy evolution of my jam, every way as amazing as when the jam first came out, im stickin with it

I saw 2GB Micro MMC somewhere on the net. But not sure if its in the stores now. If you mind I could search the link for you.
I'm thinking about an O2 Atom. FM radio, BT, WIFI, 128MB/128MB, 2Mpixel camera etc.

HTC Trinity seems as a good choice, but again, nothing really known about it..
I guess I'll stick with my JAM till a good replacement is out

I thought Micro MMC was a competitor to Micro SD.... are they compatible?

Here is the link: http://www.aivanet.com/showthread.php?t=3726
Well, a PDA what is reads SD Card, is reading MMC too so I think MMC not a competitor, just a cheaper solution. I think Micro MMC will be the same, cheaper than the Micro SD. Anyway it isn't at the stores now, so I don't know how is it works.
Cheers,

One of this mdas with umts or an nokia n91 ..

Personally it kills me that I got my wife the imate k-jam for her birthday. She brags every day that she had a better phone than I do. All I can go is lower my head in shame.
But hte real kicker is that I personally like my imate jam better than her new phone. True it does have a lot of dents and scratches, but I believe that it is the perfect size for a PDA phone and I'm happy with performance and features it offers.
I'll probably get another HTC product in the future, but I'll wait till they are able to fit all the things I want into the size of my JAM. This list includes:
-stereo bluetooth support
-gps
-3 mega pixel camera
-qwerty keyboard
I think those features, plus what my JAM already has will make for a good phone as long as it is no larger than what I already have.

Since my TMO contract lasts till August 2007 I'm complete unsure what my next device will be or look like. What I do know fur sure is that I really love the Magician formfactor. So it will be a small device with hopefully hsdpa/umts, better camera, WM5 or it's successor Crossbow, maybe a keyboard like the Hermes.
BTW the new O2 BT stack make stereo audio streaming possible over BT http://forum.xda-developers.com/viewtopic.php?t=33532&sid=afdb36816b8348efc74e3baa24b5d5a4

The Damn Thing is TOO Fat and Ugly!

Is it just me, or is the Wizard not as good looking as the Magician?
I wish they would give me integrated wireless, WM 5.0, a better bluetooth stack and more ram on the same device.
I really don't need the stupid keyboard. It seems to add quite a bit of thickness.
My .02 cents.
-CoolBeans
I totally agree. Its looks like a cheap and tacky attempt to make something look futuristic.
The Keyboard is really personal preference. I know I will get a ton of use out of that keyboard since I type about 30 emails a day on my phone and it is a logical step for HTC.
The wizard has not yet been branded by O2, Orange etc... these companies will add their own personal cosmetic flavour to the device. Have you seen the pictures of the CDMA version of the wizard? It is a very nice looking device(except for that ugly antenna sticking out)
Orange are going to call it the SPV M600 some info on www.coolsmartphone.com
I wouldn't even consider this device if it didn't have a keyboard. A keyboard is the absolute most important factor in any device I consider. Without a keyboard, I don't even look at it.
I thought the spirit of the Jam/Magician was to have a fairly full featured device in a small form factor.
If you need a keyboard, perhaps you should be looking to the Universal.
I bought a Javo case... thought it was too big. I then got a silicon skin for it and still felt it was too thick. I have now resorted to keeping my Jam naked and it feels just right (all puns intended).
Another 4-5 mm from the Wizard and I might look like I'm happy to see everyone I come across with this thing in my pocket.
It might have been a good thing in my dating days, but I'm married now.
Beleive me, if there were rumors about Sprint carrying the Universal, I would be getting one for sure. I'm only considering the Apache because I know I can get one within the next couple months.
Well, I guess I would probably get an Apache for my wife either way. But I would definitely get the Universal for myself. But as it stands right now, it's going to be 2 Apaches, 1 for me and 1 for the wife.
There are no rumors of a CDMA Universal, so there are definitely no rumors of my carrier (Sprint) offering a CDMA Universal. I'm locked into a contract with Sprint, so I can't just leave them. And besides, here in the USA there are only 2 3G networks at the moment, Sprint and Verizon. And both are CDMA (EVDO) so it would have to be a CDMA device for me to get it.
I won't consider it without a keyboard, but I won't buy it unless I can have broadband Internet on it.
I seem to be in the minoriy here, but I don't find the Wizard all that bad in terms of its shape/size/design.
I think first and foremost we need to be focused on FUNCTION, not form. HTC could have made something that looks fantastic and not do anything.
When looking at the side-by-side comparisons of the thickness of the device against the Magician, the extra thickness was necessary to add the slide-out keyboard feature. This is a feature that, IMHO, is well worth the extra thickness. When holding a device in one's hand, thickness is the dimension that's least noticible. I'd rather a device that's a bit thicker than wider or longer.
Couple the slide-out keyboard with WM5, WiFi, more internal memory, and approx. the same width/height as the Magician, and I'm sold.
While I agree it doesn't look "great", its far from ugly. Thickness? Please, it's still overall smaller than a Nokia 6600 and compared to the Magician the extra thickness is only half a centimeter... oh no!
I would have preferred that they went with a more professional look rather than this "styled" look. I'm glad to see that they keyboard is backlit - all the photos so far (except for the ones on the .nl site) haven't shown this.
I think I'll be getting the Wizard over the Apache simply because of the aerial. I'm not too fussed about the slower speed, but an external aerial would annoy me.
I agree.
All I wanted was a thinner JAM with wifi. I don't need a keyboard with my pdaphone. If i did, i would be going for the Universal, the Treo, a Sidekick or some HP device...
The JAM's design is elegant and functional. The Wizard's design isn't elegant, even though it may be very functional. (the Galaxy looked like my perfect pdaphone, until I realised it wasn't one... )
Here's hoping that HTC will bring out a true succcessor to the minimalist JAM.
Come on, its got all these extra features and its only 0.5 cm thicker... thats this much: --
Oh my, how will we ever lug this extra size around! ;p
Guys, you're all missing the point!
The show stopper here is the processor: TI OMAP 850!
WTF
DEFINITE step down from Magician
Also v bad:
Mini-SD and 320x240
As has already been discussed - its a dual core processor which should help somewhat AND since it has a low clock rate this will help save battery life.
This isnt meant to be an "uber" PDA, its meant to be a small phone that can do the tasks of a PDA. If you want something faster, then you're going to have to get the Universal which is also bigger and has a VGA screen.
Whats the problem with MiniSD other than having to buy a new card? I needed to get a new SD card anyway... so I guess this is another non-issue for me
"Unfortunately, it will be considerably slower. While the OMAP does combine seperate processors for phone and PDA functionality, at the end of the day it is just a 195MHz ARM processor (as found in PDAs from years ago) - it's not even Xscale. " Guess who wrote that?! Dumbass
VGA would have been nice, but I agree, small screen.
SD card capacity is better than Mini-SD, 4Gb vs 1Gb at the moment.
Most people will not want to ditch their exisiting SD cards either, from their Himalayas, Blue Angels, Alpines, Andes, Magicians!

I fail to see why I am a "dumbass". It will be considerably slower than a 400MHz Xscale processor, but the fact that its dual core will help it out. I see no contradiction between those two statements.
As for the SD cards - theres always eBay to sell your old ones on

Gotta admit it DOES look as if its scowling at me when put next to the magician
Cant really see why people are getting so personal in their insults and defences about this phone tho .... when it comes down to it the phone hasnt actually been in anybodys hands yet so until some brave soul actually goes out and gets one its all just conjecture
is anyone else here disappointed with the lack of choice at the moment? its either the Universal or Wizard and each one for me has serious drawbacks: universal is tri band with no high speed option for the US, wizard has miniSD ( i currently have over 1GB of data on mine.) The BA design has everything and just needs EDGE for US and 3G for Europe, improved camera, WM5.
This thread has become more like a voting place for the Wizzard.....With valuable infos though.....

Well there are the HP IPAQ 6515 (and the future 6715 which has WiFi and WM 5.0). Plus the new Motorolla Q so there are others out there coming out soon.

Help Please . I need Some Opinions...

Hello XDA-DEV .
I needed some opinions about this phone. I checked all the reviews that were online , I have been studying about this phone for sometime now. Let me tell you about me and then I will ask for your opinions. I currently am using a HTC TYTN and it’s a ok device. I have a O2 XDA EXEC that I bought 6 months ago and I love the device but poor signal were I live ( MA, USA ) I mean I have owned many HTC devices ( TREO 750, HTC Apache , HTC TYTN , HTC Wizard , HTC Universal , Blue Angel and DASH and many other devices like BB 8800 and 8700g and 8100 and TREO 650 and 600 , but WM is the way for me) I still have all these phones. My questions is that I love the screen and performance of the O2 XDA EXEC but the signal is very bad. I mean day and night between that and TYTN. I have tried pretty much any ROM that ever came out cooked or shipped with all the radio ROMs out there still nothing. So my questions is that how is Advantage, I am buying one this week but before I spend my money on it I want to see if it is worth the money.
Form all the people that have Advantage or AMEO or U1000 could you give me some opinions also size wise is it a lot bigger than Universal or NO?
Also if anyone lives on NE area in USA how is your experience with this device.
Again I appreciated all the effort that this community has done and all I can say is thank you.
My personal opinion is that it does feel quite a lot bigger than the Universal, but it is totally worth it! TBH, neither fits in your jeans pocket so once you get to Universal size then it doesn't matter if a device is a bit bigger if it is packing what the Athena is packing. Can't help you when it comes to signal, although I personally have had no problems at all.
Thank You. Honestly i dont think the size is really a problem. do you use this as a phone also. how is the day to day phone call operation. is it a pain or no.
I use mine as a normal phone, when cycling it's on wired headset, rest of the time I hold it to my ear..
'tis big, but hey so what
I went from the TyTn to the Athena. I loved the size of the TyTN with the exception of the screen size. Screen size just didn't feel right. I was a bit apprehensive before going to the Athena but don't regret it one bit. I was also discouraged when I found out that you couldn't hold it up to the ear like a regular phone but now that I've been using it for a while, I love it and much better. Phone is MUCH more stable than the TyTn, faster, etc. If I had to choose it would only be between the Universal and Athena. Are you experiencing the screen alignment issue with your TyTN?
Edit: Also, bluetooth on Athena works better than on TyTN.
from what i've heard so far this device is great. i have been waiting for it to come here and i will get me one 2maro. i cant wait till get it in my hands. i love the features. i was gonna get iphone but i phone has nothing on this.
i wanna say thank you for your opinions. it mean alot.

It's working perfectly. I bought three units. So me and two buddies, all using TMobile in the US are very happy with the phone. I just don't trust the MicroDrive yet but don't really worry about it because I use a 4GB miniSDHC card to install my apps to. I'm in love with this phone and so are my two buddies. The built in GPS, which the TyTN doesn't have is a great great thing. I've purchased pretty much every high end phone HTC has made and this one is by far the best. The Universal comes in second place in my opinion. Reception on the Athena is better than the Universal and TyTN in my area. I gave my Universal to my fiancee so she uses it all the time. A great device and better than the TyTN.

I also own a business and this phone helps me stay organized. Also, being in a technology business, my customers almost expect me to have the latest and greatest. I don't disappoint. ;-)
I'm using TomTom. You do get one free map but what I did was just went out and purchased the full product for $150 from www.tomtom.com. It comes with the entire US and Cananda. I also like the Plus service. I have my state map, the regional map for this area and also the entire US map loaded. I keep the state map active. The entire US map doesn't contain all of the POI by default. I downloaded the POI that were not included in the default install so I'm up to speed. I use the local maps because they help with performance according to TomTom support. Just less data to deal with I guess.
My next purchase is going to be a low profile stereo bluetooth headset so I can listen to audio while lying down, etc. Going to be asking for opinions on this shortly.

Not sure. I've only had GPS for my PPC Phones. Never had the GPS devices. I know that in the past, the PocketPC GPS software was easier to customize, etc. Not sure with the newer GPS products.

the Micro Drive issue is due to the ROM, so it's a software issue, now all the device seems to be running ok, but personally, i still don't trust the Micro Drive that much, the quality of video plays really well on the DOPOD U1000, you do need to make sure you set up your core player or TCPMP correctly, after that it plays the video smoothly.

Yes performance is quicker and so is the battery drain. I've just had a couple of files come up corrupt on the Microdrive so I know there is still some problem there that wasn't solved. Hopefully in the next ROM though. For now I'm keeping only movies and MP3's and audio books, etc on the Microdrive but nothing that isn't backed up.

No VGA
This would be truly awesome if only it had vga.
At the mo i have the universal with TOMTOM6 using a bluetooth receiver and i carry a 6mp camera with 3x optical zoom.
It's kinda a drag carrying 2/3 devices but I love the keyboard and screen of the uni
Another advantage of the uni is that the screen is protected by the lid when you have it closed which i like.
What will you say about E-TEN Glofiish X800, 'Double-Oh Seven'?
This is the only thing currently that probably could lure me away from the Universal...
Advantage is too heavy, others lack VGA or GPS...
The X800 does not have one thing you can think of, and that's Keyboard. Which I honestly to God do NOT need.
The lack of an SDHC interface on either device is enough for me to stick to my Universal.

Have you got a Second Edition Universal (or a Mars Special? )?
Because as far as I know, mine does NOT have SDHC interface, just plain SD, limited to 4GB capacity cards (up to 2GB without problems, with 4GB Camera App has problems).
It even buggered my (non-SDHC) 4GB card recently (one of WM6 editions did so), so now it's only 2GB and I've currently run out of options to restore its 4GB capacity...

No ... I only have a 2GB SD card running as well on my Universal.
My point as to why the Kaiser is already redundant even before production is because the Kaiser is nothing more than a Universal+Navigator (or any other Bluetooth based GPS receiver).
The mini-SD interface on the Kaiser is the only key that made it redundant against the Universal.
Hence, the Kaiser is NOT an upgrade of the Universal, but instead a competitor. I would call it a "side-grade" as opposed to an "up-grade".

I re-read your first message. My bad, somehow thought you were saying that Universal does have SDHC Sorry!
Right, neither of Uni or Kaiser have it. But this honestly doesn't put me off too much, I don't do video on the devices.
One thing that Kaiser sorely misses: a VGA screen... Otherwise a near-perfect device... just 160 grams, GPS present, all latest connectivity present, v.good 2.8Mpix camera, unique design.
For those waiting for it, here I found that HTC have responded to somebody that they will release the Kaiser in late JULY, not October (October will be the time for HTC Shift).
So may be after all it's worth the wait for you and things are not so gloomy?
Kaiser's lack of VGA ruins the parade for me. This is why I'm looking towards a E-TEN Glofiish X800... also due in July.
In the whole flurry of devices coming each day - I'm yet to find a slick (Universal is the hefty 285 g...), well-connected, GPS-enabled device with a VGA screen...

Wow ... that's quite a bit of "VGA" in one post.
Maybe you can try and explain to me why a VGA (640x480) resolution on a 3.6 inch screen device is actually practical.
I have used OzVGA on my Universal and then removed it just after 1 week because the high resolution demanded a higher precision touch-screen input from the stylus. You can forget about using your finger with OzVGA on VGA mode as opposed to the standard QVGA mode. I mean, in VGA mode I "lost" the ability to control scroll-bars, as well as cell/row selections from a table form or even when you want to do "hold down" selection (this is equivalent to the right-click in desktops) - using my finger ofcourse. Things were OK with the stylus.
With such a serious loss, the benefit of VGA is not actually worthy on the Universal because of its screen size.
If you are talking about the HTC Advantage, then VGA is really worthy because we are talking about a 5 inch screen here - and so the loss which the Universal suffers from is not applicable to the Advantage.
I agree, the only thing missing now is the VGA screen.
I am confused, is this device able to flip into laptop mode? From the other pictures, it seemed the keyboard pulls out from behind the screen, but then there is another picture showing the screen folded up on the keyboard.
Do you like the price?

Want to upgrade to new phone, anything comparable or better than universal

I had this phone for about 2mths its the greatest phone in the world except in virginia reception sucks with cingular. So i have to change despite my many long waiting period of finding any way to keep it.
So im gonna sell this. Now i need something either comparable or better, the size is not an issue for me as i would keep this if the reception was better.
Any suggestions?
Thanks
Hi dude!
I had... a mean I have a UNIVERSAL, so I try to sell... je je
My new baby is Athena or HTC Advantage X7500... it's awsome.
At first glance it's bigger... but the design it's really nice and light.
Find the specifications you'll love: http://www.htc.com/product/03-product_x7500.htm
So the UNI it's cool too but I have since 2005...
davicito
HTC Omni - it'll be the REAL Universal replacement.
Did you consider changing to T-Mobile?
If you can bear QVGA, try Tytn II

The TyTn II (Kaiser) would be almost perfect, if only it had a damn VGA screen
I don't know why all the new HTC devices have micro-SD slots, I love normal sized SD cards because they are very cheap and very high capacity (8GB SDHC cards only £29.99 on eBay!). And what's with all these 2.5mm (and even mini-USB) headphone sockets?! The 3.5mm jack on the Universal is perfect, so why change it HTC!
I also like the cheap 3rd party add-ons for the Uni, I have a 3200mAH battery which was like $20 from eBay, and now 5200mAH are even available! So your phone can run with light use for almost 2 weeks without needing a single charge, no other phone even comes close to the Uni for battery life

exactly how much of a difference would QVGA on a PPC make? The only QVGA phone I have used (and own) is a nokia 6300 and that would be too small for me.

Nor size for that matter, save the ancient analog (with the exception of the motorola GSM brick) devices of yore. *fond memories of hitting people over the head with a motorola MC750*

Yes. I am sticking with my Universal. I just bought a TyTN II and its going to my Uncle. I am actually planning to buy O2 XDA Flame but I will cancel on that because it has microSD and no SD. So I will wait for I-mate ultimate 7150 or HTC Omni. No exceptions. Our Universal is the best!!!! Even HTC Athena sux!!!
Go HTC Universal!!!!
ya i wish i could wait to either afford em or wait for the release but with my reception problems i cant
dang it for me
Hey Nuclear - DO NOT apply the upgrade for your iPhone when you get notified its available - Apple are BRICKING unlocked phones with this update!! It's happened all over the place.. be aware!

Yeah, a real shame to as an upgraded Universal is about the only thing I would consider buying right now. Universal was the perfect size and usability. I just wish it had a few upgrades (quad band, faster cpu, gpu, built-in gps, ext display, more memory).
I almost upgraded to Athena, but it is a bit to big, and the keyboard is just held on magnetically, not really a clamshell, hinged thing and so doesn't meet the need of being able to easily flip it open and type anywhere as there is that possibility of the main phone dropping away from the keyboard while typing on the go. Plus the size and no vibrate were deal killers.
The Universal is just perfect. Small enough to use as a phone should the BT headset not be handy. Form and Function it is just amazing.
Anyone considering the ETEN Glofiish M800 yet?

I have used the Alpine,Trinity, Tynt II and Polaris now.
I am now looking for a replacement of the HTC Universal - screen size 3,5 with a nice keayboard with BT, Wifi, A-GPS, FM radio etc...
Any ideas?
Thanks

Sounds like the Nokia E90 If you love Windows Mobile and can't live without a touchscreen then this is probably not acceptable.
I have both an E90 and an XDA EXEC and swap my SIM between them depending on what I need to use my phone for, but the SIM tends to stay longer in the E90 as I find it more and more difficult to be without the:
- larger screen,
- better web browser,
- better camera with VGA recording!,
- better battery life: I charge my E90 once or twice every week if I don't use the GPS,
- faster 3G,
- call recording using IVCM: saves me money on not having to pay my operator for this!,
- super-duper sound quality from Nokia HS-39W stereo Bluetooth headset with Sony MDR-EX71 earbuds) and
- more stable OS: the E90 has only crashed twice since I bought it half a year ago and that was before I updated to the latest version.
But with all these things that the E90 does better, it lacks a touchscreen which is a constant pain in the backside, and the Office suite is especially painful to use without a stylus. Try scrolling through a 1000+ line Excel file using only the cursor keys...

what are people moving on to?

The Universal has severed me well for several years, but I feel that there must be something newer, shiner out there.
(I basically want a new toy)
I love having a proper keyboard, the ability to open word/excel files as well as web browsing and email.
Any recommendations
Ash
I got an XDA Orbit - but still keep going back to my Exec. It may be bulky but I still love the flexibility of it.
Take a look at HTC Athena or HTC Shift, its bulky but a step up indeed.
I'm not moving on, the Uni is still the best IMHO. No other phone has a full keyboard (including number buttons), VGA screen, normal sized SD card slot, 3.5mm headphone socket, 3G, and massive extended batteries of over 5000mAH. The Athena is not counted, since you need a headset or speakerphone to use it as a "phone", which I find too inconvenient.
I will not upgrade until a phone comes out which has most if not all of the above features.
I upgraded to O2 XDA Atom Life a couple of weeks ago. I never used the keyboard of universal, so, being keyboardless on atom life does not hurts. 1gb rom is a big plus. I've stored everything on my device(including a 600mb movie too ). Its fast(624MHZ) too. Its qvga, but, at 2.8', it looks sweet. And hey, its beautiful from outside too
Overall, a happy guy. Impressed with quanta's hardware quality too.
edit: here is the review of it on my website
http://gadgetmix.com/reviews/atomlife/atomlife.htm
Kaiser - the HSDPA and GPS nearly makes up for the lack of VGA screen and full number row.
Surur
I'm upgraing to... The universal! Yep apart from going to the athena which i dont have the money for nothing compares to the Universal. Must admit the Kaiser did appeal to me but with it's GPS chip, but a 400 Mhz processor and QVGA persuaded me to that the Uni was better. Now if HTC was to put a GPS chip in the Uni? It'd be perfect and have everything.
Psi
when is the omni expected? any news?
