Hello,
How do I turn GPRS OFF On an Xda Exec?
I have a successful WiFi connection set up to my Works Netork and I want to browse the internet via that. However, GPRS just will not GO AWAY & keeps on insisting that IT rather what I WANT is the route to the internet.
Hence I want it gone, nada, no more.
I can safely say that I will NEVER browse the net using GPRS or poxy WAP sites - excessively expensive crapola!
Thanks in advance,
Andy

and me! been searching but no luck yet!
not sure about 2005 but with 2003 i can just choose which connection i wanna use in connection->advanced
If you never going to use GPRS, just delete the settings:
Settings->Connections->Connections, under My ISP choose 'Manage existing connections', then long click on the GPRS setting (not sure what the name in your case will be, but it is probably the only one there) then choose delete.
You are now safe from GPRS charges.

there is not option to delete?
It is possible that on your phone the connection is set up under 'My work network', try checking there. Somewhere there should be a connection with your GPRS settings and you should be able to delete it.
i must be going blind, there is no option to delete, just edit or add
You are not going blind.
On the dialog it self there are two buttons 'Edit' and 'New'.
But if you tap and hold the connection it self (see little circles) you get a pop-up menu saying 'Delete' and 'Connect'.
It works on my Jamin, and it should work for you.

oh bugger, ok thats worked BUT i thinki deleted my phone settings as now it cant find the network for calls, pratt, anyone got the setting so i can ut them back in, i dint reallt want to reset it after i got everything else working!
got it working now! ta
Same problem here, however I would like to use GPRS occasionally, so do not really want to delete the setting.
Example whilst at home, I want to use wi-fi, on the road GPRS.
Is there any tools that can turn GPRS on and off ?
Just press the E or G icon on the top bar and you should have the option to disconnect. That is, if you've enabled GPRS Disconnect in your registry. Works like a charm. Whenever I want to connect via WiFi, I just disconnect GPRS and fire up WiFi...

Do you want to disable it permanently or just temporaly?
Permanently - Delete the GPRS settings from "Settings" > " Connections"
Temporaly - Hold 3 seconds of the "End Call" button.

about the permenantly part i really don't understand what you mean, i tried what i understood but no success..
about the temporarly part i tried that already but no changes
When you see the G symbol in a white square, GPRS is possible but not connected and therefore not consuming data. When you see a small G in a small white square, with two arrows beside it, GPRS is connected and can use little amounts of data to keep the connection alive. If you have a GPRS connection (little G, two arrows), press and hold the red button for 5 secs and the symbol will change to a large G in a white box. That means you have just dis-connected your GPRS connection. If you start MSN or IE, a connecton will be established and data will be sent, so it will cost you money. You will see the G symbol change then. So, if you see only a large G in white box, no worries, GPRS is disconnected. If you see small G with two arrows, press and hold red button till symbol changes to big G and connection is ended.
The permanent solution suggested above means that in the start-settings-connections-connections menu you empty one of the boxes in your accounts, e.g. the doamin name etc. In that way, your GPRS connection cannot make a connection because the right values are not there. Problem is: when you want to use GPRS, you will have to fill in the correct values again so you will have to know what to till in in what box. You can also delete the whole connection (e.g. T-Mobile GPRS or similar) to get rid of the account entirely.
You can also install this little freeware program, if you click on the GPRS symbol it gives you a disconnect button in the pop-up, making it possible to disconnect a connection (the symbol changes into a large G with white box).
Hope this helps.
Doesnt work on my Qtek 9100, no extra button after connect.
Sometimes ago I used SPB GPRS Monitor that have extra buttons to connect/disconnect.
be sure to soft reset after installing, worked on my Vario. Also, be sure to tick the appropriate boxes in the GB soft tweak CPl applet in start-settings-system.
Today another thread was posted that gave the reg edit for the disconnect button and connection timer, search for posts made today or yesterday. I'm sure you'll find the regedits in that post. it was in HLKM/Controlpanel/phone, make a Dword names Flags02 with hex value 10, if I'm correct. save and soft reset, button should be there. this gives you the button, but not the other GB options, which I find usefull as well.
OK... its a little easier than you all think.... go to settings / connections / create a new dummy dial out entry and set that to be default rather than Autopick....
It will never use GPRS again cos it cant dial out... you may get the odd message still though. Nowt you can do about that as thats down to the OS and software.

thanks very much for the app, works perfect 8)
thx guys it seems to be Ok now
Hi Folks,
Hoping someone can answer these?
On the connection manager window on the new imate rom I have a couple of icons which appear to do nothing. The first one is on the bottom left under the phone icon and looks like a pda with left & right arrows. It is greyed out and i'm wondering what it's for?
The second is the pushmail icon at the very bottom. This is also greyed out. Under settings the only options I have are bluetooth or wifi settings - is this normal?
Though not a user of pushmail, how do you set it up? When I add an email account i only get options for pop or imap. Is pushmail setup something i only get when i add a new server source?
Thanks
"looks like a pda with left & right arrows"
is data on or off, ie gprs is connected or not,
push mail you need to add a server source, an exchange server,
4smartphone.net has a 14 day trial you can mess with. just remember you dont need to do the sms address bit when setting up.

Thanks for the info. I figured that might be the case with pushmail.
Regarding the gprs icon - i can only use it to turn off gprs. If gprs is off the icon is greyed out. Any ideas? It's not a huge issue because i use gprs monitor to turn on/off gprs from the today screen anyway...
rather than try and connect, i just directly use the app and gprs will connect itself as and when its required.
intresting point about not being able to turn it on from that icon tho, the app isnt really that clear when it comes to whats just an icon and whats a button, the active sync icon is the same.

As do I generally... Interesting comment about the activesync icon. Makes you wonder why they call it connection manager if it manages but a few things...

I have attempted to set up GPRS on my M600 (Unlocked for Vodafone sim)
GPRS has been enabled as I have the G icon up!
I have been on the vodafone website and tried there settings with no luck!
I have been on the Filesaveas website and plugged in all of those settings with NO luck, Have also installed the I-mate .cab again with no luck!!!
I am starting to go insane spent three days trying all different settings and No luck at all!!!!
You name the website and I think Ihave probably tried it.
Does anyone have any useful advise for me, provide me with some form of sanity check!!!!
Ideally I wold love a .cab file to install!
But would like feedback from anyone else in a similar position, on how they resolved this some what annoying issue!!!!
regards
Wilko_007
I set up my Vario II for Vodafone with no problem. These settings (*.pdf file) seem to be the same as the ones I used, see how they compare with the settings you are using.
Many thanks I will give it a go!
Ok have now got connection but I can't surf?
I have seen comments about GPRS beening fully enabled?
Are there 2 forms of GPRS that can be enabled? WAP & WEB???
Do I need to worry about the Dialing Rules???
Thanks in advance for your assistance!!

Could you be a little more specific i.e. does it come up with a pop-up box stating that it is connecting to GPRS? If yes, which connection does it say it is connecting to, is it the correct one (i.e. the new GPRS settings that you have just keyed in)? When you say it won't surf, what do you mean exactly ... are you using Pocket IE and does it come up with any error messages etc...
Connection via GPRS No probs I then get the Small G and the two arrows fixed on the bar.
Enter IE and type google for example.
get the status bar flash up breifly and then disapear, with no change to the original Orange World Home page!!!
No errors what so ever????
okay ... the next thing I would probably do then is download an alternative browser to see if it still happens in a different browser. Netfront is pretty good. At least that way you should be able to establish if it is a GPRS problem or a browser problem.
Ok I now have installed Netfront and connected to the GPRS!
typed in www.google.com
I have a warning screen:
Browser Warning
Cannot load Page
Type: DNS no server is specified
?????
Okay .. I am running out of ideas now, it does sound like your GPRS Settings are still wrong.
Click 'start menu', 'settings' and go to the 'Connections' tab. Now click 'Connections', then the 'Advanced' tab then 'Select Networks'. The first box (ie. Programs that connect to the Internet automatically) should say 'My Isp' and if you click 'Edit', it should show you 'Vodafone Internet' is selected.
If you then select to edit that, you should see in this order 'Vodafone Internet' and then it should show modem type as GPRS, next page should show Access Point Name of 'Internet', next page should show User name 'Web' ... password is the same, domain field should be blank ... nothing needs to be done in the advanced tab because the default of 'Use-server-assigned IP address' should automatically be selected, same for the server tab too, default should be server-assigned.
These are the settings that work fine on both my XDA Mini S and my MDA Vario II.
Right I have checked both ISP and MyWork Network, all correct!
The only thing I can see is that the password box has loads of characters (*'s) instead of just 3 *'s for WEB (***)
But every thing else is as the PDF??
Stumped!!!!
you can try messing with the newly released ms network tools there is a link in development forum
or you can try manualy typing in a know dns server in the settings
unless the gprs dont route the request
any dsn server ip will do
same as pc's really
I am afraid I don't know then ... we have reached the level of my knowledge (which isn't high )
Perhaps somebody with a little more technical knowhow on GPRS issues may be able to help you.
Sorry I couldn't get it sorted for you.
Thanks for your help a least I can connect now!!
Thank you again!!
anyone heard of the connection No. being *99#?
Vodafone instructed me to put that in the setup?
I guess that goes in under the " My Work Network" Vodafone Wap - Number?
This is now becoming a huge headache anyone got any ideas?
not sure how vodaphone handle it but i never heard about
ppl having to add numbers when they picked gprs as connection
belived that was only if you connected around grps

I'm expericening a similar problem.
My phone was sold as an O2 XDA Mini S. My O2 contract/account doesn't allow GPRS (they want me to upgrade) so I tried my Vodafone PAYG SIM and it works without having to have the phone unlocked in any way. By that I mean I can use voice calls and using the settings I've found through this site I can send MMS messages via GPRS but I cannot connect to the internet. I've checked with Vodafone and the account will allow internet and GPRS etc.
The only thing that I can see that is wrong is the password. Whenever I type "web" then finish, it always defaults back to a string of 16 ***'s when I re-check the settings.
I've even done a hard reset and used the corporate install to no avail. I don't want to run any sort of unlocking software if I don't need to as I don't want to create a very expensive door stop.
Any ideas?
The string of asterisks is normal, I think it is just a method used by Windows to make the password more difficult for someone to guess i.e. by disguising not only the characters but also the number of characters.
I just double checked and my fully working settings also show a row of asterisks despite it being a 3 character password.
Thanks Nicky
I'll keep plodding away with this but hopefully someone might steer me in the right direction soon.
;0)
I do not have Data on my contract (orange) and am quite happy using Wifi at home and work, but I find my phone likes to switch over when it feels like it to HSDPA etc.
In options I switch data to off but my phone likes to overide this! I have to race to switch it off to avoid an enhanced monthly bill!
Does anyone know how to stop this?
Thanks
Your phone will use which ever is giving the best signal - I would imagine wifi by default...
Or Try app like NoDate
omg, this is the zillion time when somebody ask that question
why don't you use the search option? as somebody said, "search is your friend".
ok, i will write here what can you do, beside use nodata or other application
maybe a mod can add it to wiki...
so:
settings-connections-connections-advanced-select networks
go to "Programs that automatically connect to the Internet..."
on the pop up menu chose each option that includes your phone network operator (in my case is Orange and one of the options looks like "Orange Internet") - edit - proxy settings and here uncheck the box "This network connects to the Internet"
repeat the procedure for each option that has your operator name included
a soft reset may be recomended but not absolutely necessary!
after that the network icon (G or E or whatever) will be gray and no data transmission will be allowed. if it is not grey, then your settings are not right.
et voila! There you are!
good luck!

How to stop Facebook app to automatically open a 3G connection even when the WiFi connection is also ON?

you don't need anything. just read the manual
You could use the application "Data Controller", i have it installed cause this annoyed me aswell.
Data controller allows you to shut down any non-wifi signal your phone is currently transmitting (like the data link & wap etc.)

Thank you for the hint, but searching for it I found a new 'version' updated to work with Manila Windows Phone, called Manila Dial-up Enabler/Disabler.
Now what I do need, it is to find a way to use facebook through wifi/wlan ..
Has anybody already discovered how to have facebook using only wifi or activesync connections?
I will Copy/Paste the steps since new users cant post links
Prevent your phone from using the data connection when you want to ensure that it will never connect to the Internet via GPRS/3G.
On the Home screen, slide to the Settings tab and then tap Wireless controls.
1-Tap Menu > Connections and then tap Add a new modem connection.
2-Enter Offline as the name of the connection.
3-In the Select a modem list, select Cellular Line (GPRS), and then tap Next.
4-Enter Offline as the access point and then tap Next.
5-Tap Finish.
6-Tap Manage existing connections and then select Offline.
7-Press BACK and then tap Done.
Restoring the data connection:
1-On the Home screen, slide to the Settings tab and then tap Wireless controls.
2-Tap Menu > Connections and then tap Manage existing connections.
3-Tap the name of your mobile operator's data connection.
4-Press BACK and then tap Done.
Hope this will help
