I have my JJ since October 2005. It worked 100% on the original ROM. Early Dec. 2005 I upgraded to the then latest Radio and ROM's. No issues.
Then suddenly From January I cannot get the Phone to work or connect to a data connection. I was told to upgrade to a 64Bit SIM which I did but still no result. I have installed every release of the Radio ROM and every ROM version compatible on the Uni up to date.
When the BAND is set to Auto it will not give me a data connection nor will the phone work. When in GSM same result. When I put the BAND in WCDMA it works 100%. Data connections work, Phone works, SMS etc. Problem is it only works in 3G areas now!
HELP, after 2 months I'm pulling out my hear and carrying my SP3i as backup.
Bump
@postman
what other applications are you using? Have you tried to start a fresh system with no third part apps (ie after a hard reset)? Have you tried to use the .cab files from i-mate for your network?
When I had a JJ I had frequent connections/disconnectiond between GPRS and UMTS. With the latest Radio on my XDA Exec I don't suffer from such frequent switching and it seems to have improved the batetry life as well. I used radio rom version 1.06.00.
J,
At the moment with the new ROM no apps installed appart from the ExtROM. Local network .cab also installed.
Problem is not as such that swtiching is taking place, problem is in BAND = Auto or GSM the Uni does not work for neither phone service nor data. When in WCDMA it works 100% without any issues. Like I said the prob. with this is that 3G is not covered like GSM, so if I leave work the phone feature is basically null and void as only GPRS/GSM/EDGE in area where I live.
Maybe the 3G and GSM/GPRS works off diff stacks / protocols or even hardware?
Yours desperate,
postmanpat
@postman, if you have tried to reflash your JJ and still the problem persists and the original problem did not occur because you added any third-party s/w then my conclusion is that you may have a hardware problem. Contact i-mate they usually reply within 2/3 days.
I would say you probably have a hardware problem !!, the GSM and UMTS aspects of the phone are very separate !!!

Can someone help me understand if this is a general JJ issue, or a function of the AKU 3.2 Rom Update 1.90.96 (Radio 1.13.00). It's not identified in that thread:
Many of my JJ issues have been solved by turning off UMTS until I need it. My battery improvement is negligible (when measuring mA consumption), but the following used to manifest due to the phone's inability to switch between GSM and UMTS elegantly:
Calls frequently go to v.mail
Dialing results in 'Dialing...' message with no connection - or even worse I connect and other party can hear me even tho I believe it's not connected
Dialing results in 'This operation not allowed' or something like that
Several other issues I forget
All this went away when I turned off UMTS. My understanding is that UMTS and GSM are completely different functions, and the phone sees a UMTS signal and tries to switch to that. Unfortunately it's too weak and the phone does not know to give up and go back to GSM/GPRS. After around 15mins of battling, everything goes tits-up until I reset.
Is this something that everyone with moderate 3G/UMTS coverage experiences? Or is this a ROM/Radio version issue?
I have a very poor UMTS reception in my house and have the same problems. I have tried different radio roms. My current solution is just using GSM at my home and only UMTS at my workplace..
my too...
my case is similar. I had with radio 1.09 and now with 1.13. looks is a problem when you move between zones with umts and other only gprs and the phone gets crazy. I think is related new speed available form umts (1,8 and now 3.2) that are producing special situation in the device.
Thaks guys - more helpful than you know: I was considering a re-flash, and my JJ is SOOO customised I would have written off a week getting it all back into shape. The HSDPA change may also explain why I didn't have this issue with the first JJ in country in January, but am definitely having issues now.

If you reflash only your radio, you wont loose your data..
hey guys...this is my first post here...
my pda2k keeps on dropping signals and sometimes halt during a call...
at first.....as instructed..2 time restarting solved the problem..
can you guys plzz help me out.......im using wm6
thnx in advance
What version of Radio do you using ? Try to upgrade to the last version.
my BA info is as follows
ROM version 5.60.00 WWE
radio version 1.12.00
well from where can i get the latest version of radio??
wel..i found it..and i am upgrading radio...
less see what happens
.....upgraded to 1.15.00
....no success......
im not the first one to have this problem..it ws in 2003. 2005 and now in wm 2006 now....
dunno what to do.....dont wanna throw away my pda2k
Maybe it is an hardware problem?
If your problem is in WM2003, WM5 and WM6, just get the phone to a repair or a recycle center....
but the thing is ..it was working fine....
and after installing a resh rom...it works for like 2 days with no problem...
im sure that its not hardware issue....
its the same problem....which everyone esle is having in this forum..abt signal dropping...dun think tat this harware problem can come to lot ov ppl at the same time...
the problem is with the phone company...
my pda2k also gives me similar problems...
but when i'm travelling to some other countries and using a local sim card there... i do not see any such problem... even while roaming sometimes... i do not see any problem with the current sim card.
i think it is the home service provider which has the problem.
If you have signal dropping, replace the flex cable.
The flex cable signal dropping is a common problem to any slide phone.
In fact I slide the phone halfway to test the signal if it will drop or not.
No signal drop means good flex cable.
Same case with Nokias and other phones.
I've had my friend's BA flex cable replaced and signal drop is solved.
also, one old battery can do that issue.
with my older battery, it used to cut connections sometimes. with the new one, keep connection.
hmm...but the thing is...that this fone was working fine in my country i.e Pakistan..but its giving problem here in canada.......and it actually came from canada before....
i dont know what to do....there were also issues like that with my imate-Pocket pc before...and now same is with PDA2k...
i have chaged a lot of sims...but no success.......
I personally believe that there is a bug on the radio dll.
If you are using WM2003, try this workaround to see if it helps: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=340557
In your case, activate only the 1.900Mhz band or the 850 / 1900 band only. I believe that the former is better, though.
I've been only using it for the last 2 days, but so far so good.

Well same problem here in Bulgaria. We have 3 Telecoms. Unfortunately i have subscription to one of them and some times like every couple of months I have the same problem. Green light blinking, but when someone is calling me - out of service. It rings, but after i pick up - it drops the call and gives "No service" This last for about a day or so. When i switch sim cards to another service provider - it works fine. The same thing happens when I travel from one town to another. I thing this is due to poor software configuration in the GSM towers. Overall for three years this happens to me like 10-15 times for couple of hours to one day. And I have this problem only with one provider only. No work around as far as i know.. Sorry
signal problem partially solved.

Guys,
Definitely the problem is software. I'm from Brazil and my operator is TIM. I tried many ROMs (at least 10) with the same symptom: if the phone misses the signal, I get into troubles to find the signal again and it keeps finding another operator instead TIM (in my case it only finds Vivo - which is 850Mhz).
After those many trials, I found a ROM that solves the problem partially. It's the PV DVH 19701 ( http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=390008&highlight=19701 )
With this ROM, it still looses the signal when on a place where the signal is not present and don't find while returning to a place which the signal is present, BUT, I just tap the antenna on the top of the screen, tap settings > network and finally tap "find network" and VOILA, the signal is back without much pain!!
One more thing is a little change on the registry according to a recommendation from Microsoft. Using one registry editor, go to:
HKCU\ControlPanel\Phone and change the value for "Features" parameter from 204c7d8 to 206c7d8. Remember that before you change, you need to choose the view mode to hexadecimal.
That's it folks...have fun!
Guys here is my situation. I have a Cingular 8525 for some time now I noticed that it was dropping signal and then recovering it I thought it was a radio problem but I changed numerous radios and it didn't fix the issue. Last night I noticed that it wasn't picking up any signal, on turning it on I noticed that I had No GSM I tried the way in the Wiki but I am unable to flash using the radio 1.16 to it I unchecked Allow USB connections but for some reason I cannot flash the radio. I started the phone attempted to flash the phone with several other radios and it just hangs. On rebooting I see NO GSM but when my phone starts up I see it reads the network but I cannot do anything else no calls nothing. Is there another way to flash the radio to my device or is the radio just dead? If so I have another 8525 thats not working can the radio part of it be changed?
Regards
It seems your phone is toggling between 3G and the older GPRS. By default, the 8525 automatically selects 3G if it is available. If you move out of 3G range (considering 3G support nationwide isn't great yet), which will happen often, you will lose signal temporarily and either switch to GPRS or regain a 3G signal. Currently I default my phone to use GPRS just because i can't be bothered with having to deal with dropping signal/calls as often as i used to with the automatic setting. There is a free tool called BandSwitch which can accomplish this for you. The newer version (2.1) is not free but if you can get your hand on the older version which is, it'll work satisfactorily well. I hope this solves your problem.
I had the same problem and nothing worked for me.
Try different solutions posted my various users and see if anytihng works for you.
I think it is a hardware radio problem and probably the only solution is to change the motherboard.
If it is still under warranty - get it done. If not, you are out of luck.
I am only writing here after I tried everything I could possibly imagine with no result. Sorry the long text.
I'd like to hear ideas from you. Anyone with a similar problem.
I have a Blackstone, and never had even the smallest problem with GSM signal. But now I face the following:
- If I set the Band to "Auto", my phone connects to the HSPDA network with no problem, and I use internet and make calls normally.
- If I set the band to "GSM", sometimes it connect, sometimes not. When I manage to connect, if I try to use the internet, sometimes I lose the signal. When I am making a call, it frequently hangs up. The problem is random, sometimes I can use GSM with internet and calls for a long time, but suddenly it crashes again!
The solution would be always connect to HSPDA, but the problem is that on "Auto" the phone sometimes goes to GSM alone, and the signal breaks down.
I cannot be sure exactly when this problem began. But it was after I installed PDAVIET's Rom (WM 6.5 21053 and manila 2.5), and radio 1.17.25.09.
Among everything I have done:
- Flashed dozens of Roms always hard-reseting twice after. Tried stock Roms, cooked Roms with WM 6.1 / 6.5, manila 1.3 / 2.1 / 2.5.
- Flashed radios 1.13 / 1.14 and 1.17 in combination with all Roms. Tried with and without ripphone.dll's
- To eliminate a operator problem, I used my chip on a nokia for a few days, and didn'd have a single problem with signal, calls, internet. I installed a chip from another operator and faced the same problem.
Nothing I have done made any result.
Even using my stock Rom didn't solved. I used this phone for 8 months with no problem. So I came to the conclusion this is hardware related, with the antenna or something.
Thanks
All right, have been through a few more Roms and Radios and the problem remains unchanged...
Really looks like an antenna related problem. Apparently I will never connect to GSM again unless I take my device to service (have no guarantee), and be lucky!
But anyway, I found a solution to the connection instability and phone calls interruptions. Solved my life for now. It is very complicated:
*********************
HKLM\Software\OEM\UMTS
OpMode=2
*********************
This forces the phone to always stay in the 3G band. The "Auto" mode you can set in Comm Manager lets the phone change to GSM when the signal is low or whenever he wants, and my connection breaks down.
BTW, other modes are:
OpMode=0 (Auto mode)
OpMode=1 (GSM only mode)
OpMode=2 (3G only mode)
I know this may not be useful for anyone, but I just felt like sharing...
My htc touch hd was originally on orange but i unlocked it and am using o2 pay as you go sim. however i never get a strong signal, and sometimes when i call people nothing happens when i check my balance sometimes it just says operation failed.
theres nothing wrong with the sim card as i've used it on other phones perfectly, and i've used a vodafone sim on my blackstone and its worked perfectly
also when im using android (problem occurs on all versions e.g. froyo/gingerbread) on my blackstone it says im on bt cellnet whilst im on o2 and so i my o2 sim card is useless on android. Do any other o2 users have this problem?
Should i get a new sim card? and is this with all o2 sim cards on blackstone?
EDIT
yeh still the same problem, signal always seems to be weak, but im gonna try the nandroid rom, my main isssue is that when ive used android on my blackstone from the sd card it says im on bt cellnet- when im on o2 !
while from several clues in your post i assume you are in the UK, it would have been nice to mention that, since o2 exists in several countries with different sim cards, network infrastructures and frequencies.
from a quick search i found that orange uk is operating on the 1800mhz band, while o2 appears to be on the 900mhz band. assuming that while changing your sim card, you did not change the rom or any settings, this might be the solution:
open phone->menu->options
1. ->network, set network selection to automatic.
2. ->band, set network type to automatic and gsm/umts band to automatic
also, depending on your rom, there might be an automatic band selection option in comm manager.
while these are windows mobile settings, it might still affect your android problems as well, since android through haret is based on windows correctly loading hardware drivers.
the settings here are taken from my htc wwe 1.56 stock rom, values or naming might vary.

yes from uk
yeh im using a kwbr rom(i think), on all roms ive tried including windows, i get the problem
for my band setting they are both auto, so do i change anything?
on network type its auto, band frequency is auto but i can choose from
auto,gsm(900+1800) + umts (900+1200), gsm(1900+850) or umts (2100)
so do u know how to fix the android problem thats my main concern, if nandroid comes to blackstone will the problem still occur?
you could give it a go with gsm on the top one and gsm(900+1800)+umts(900+2100), since according to my research o2 uk operates on 900mhz for gsm and umts.
i am fairly certain, this issue originates in your windows mobile settings and is therefor also present in haret android. nandroid works in another way. since it is flashed directly in the rom space of the device, it replaces winmo and it will not depend on winmo for the initialization of the hardware. which is why i believe, the issue might not be present there.
also: have you tried other roms and/or other radio roms? the latest radio 1.17.25.09 is known for a generally better performance (which comes with the downside of slightly higher power consumption).

nah i havent used other radio roms- i thought they just affected the radio, im not sure of what radio roms do. maybe ill try other radio roms when i've got time
ill change my band settings, will this have an effect on 3g and signal strength or anything?
the radio rom handles all kinds of interactions between the windows mobile operating system and the hardware. this includes the fm radio, but also the camera, bluetooth, speaker, microphone, wi-fi, gps and also wireless communications like gsm and 3g.
so it might help your case. you should perform a hard reset after flashing a radio though, because previously stored bluetooth pairings or stored wi-fi networks might not work afterwards w/o a hard reset.
as mentioned above, the latest version 1.17.25.09 improves performance like quicker gps fix, better wi-fi signal and better gsm signal. also, have a look at this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1111373 and the one linked in there for information on how other people handled their similar signal problems.
