I've noticed that when using CPU intensive applications such as games or video, the frame rate drops dramatically while using the touch screen. As soon as I remove the stylus from the touch screen, or when the touch screen receives no input, the speed increases back to "normal". Has anyone else noticed this before? It seems to me like there are still some drivers that need some major updating. I hope the bugs and performance issues will be resolved with this device soon. This device feels underpowered for the hardware is has in it. I'm guessing with some further optimization it will be able to perform much faster (I hope).
BTW, I have the HTC branded version, with ROM version 1.15.405.5

I have the same problem when K-Rally is running.
I've noticed the same problem when playing K-Rally. When I remove the stylus from the screen game run appreciably faster.
Same here guys, but on my Hermes/Tytn which also has the same processor!
Use google and you'll see that some sites recommend that you install these applications that are running slow (Krally for example) on your memory card instead of the main built in memory, and then try it!
I noticed this first when I installed Krally on the Tytn and it seemed slow when using the stylus. On my friends Asus P525 it runs so smooth and fast!
I havent botherd buying a memory card yet as I dont intend to keep the Tytn so therefore I'm unable to test whether or not the above method works.
If you guys can then test it and post your results here.
Thanks.
Guys some bad news,
I've tried installing Krally on a memory card and playing on it but still the problem remains! As soon as you touch the screen with a stylus the game slows down and returns to normal when you remove the stylus!
Not good at all!
DO you have the same problem:
I can't play KRALLY (neither other games as emulated games(mario kart snes)) because i can't push to buttons at the same time. If i'm pushing for example the button to accelerate, once i push a button to turn it stops....That really sucks....When i Had my i-mate JAM i didn't have such problems.
It would be nice to be fixed
use auto-accelerate and auto-turbo... and just directional pad to turn left and right i solved playing like this
Same Problem here! I tried to play PocketQuake and some other games, but every time i use the stylus everything slows down.
But the biggest problem is, when i use the buttons especially the "D-pad" after some pressing of this button (8-10 times) the whole trinity crashes!
Are there people having this problem too?
Maybe someone could test pocketquake too, or test if the dopod rom solves this problem.
Greetings,
Borbosch
Interesting, cpu is going 45% as soon as you touch the screen (see screen capture).
I don't think my previous devices had this "feature", I will check and compare with their behaviour.
We should also check with hermes to see if it's the same.
Can you imagine your PC using half is processing power when you click with the mouse?

Yeah, this is quite frustrating. I really hope HTC or whoever is developing new ROMs already know about this issue, because it really needs to be corrected.
I had sent e-mail on support with this issue.
I've noticed that the frame rate slow down dramatically then I run the game (such as K-Rally,Sky Force by INFINITE DREAMS - http://www.idreams.pl/main.php) and use stylus to control the game. As soon as I remove the stylus from the touch screen the image become smooth. This not happen If I use buttons to control the game.
I install the same game to ASUS P525 PDA phone. The frame rate slow down not happen on ASUS P525 then I use stylus to control the game and the game run smooth.
Would you improve this problem or how can I improve it?

This is the answer:
Regrettably as the seems you mention about are made by a 3rd party, I can't comment on there compatibility with you P3600.
I suggest you refrain from using your Stylus to control them as this affects the frame rate.
If you have any further issues with the software I suggest you contact the software manufacturer.
Thank you for your enquiry, Should you have any other problem, please do not hesitate to call us. Your Local number can be found at http://www.europe.htc.com/support/cs_by_phone.html

So they do not think that this issue their problem.
It is clearly not a problem related to the games. If you mention the games to HTC of course they will say: it's not my fault, it's their fault as everybody tend to do.
It is probably more simple to talk about the cpu consumption when pressing the screen which shouldn't occur and that is slowing down ANY application.
Another email
I'll send an email to HTC about this also to see if we can get a better response. I'll post the reply when I get it.

This is indeed a lousy driver. While all other 2.8" HTC devices exhibit this problem in most games, the speed doesn't decrease THIS bad on, say, the HTC Wizard overclocked to 240 MHz and running K-Rally - not even at the standard 195 MHz, where, with the touchscreen constantly pressed, the CPU usage of gwes.exe increases to 17% (measured using the AKU3.2 ROM).
I've also quickly measured the CPU usage increase of gwes.exe (or, for that matter, anything) on my HP iPAQ 2210 (about 0.5% only) and my HTC Universal (no noticable CPU usage increase at all).
All in all, this problem only seems to be acute with the QVGA PPC PE devices of HTC.

Yes, the usual, "canned" answer. I'll explain them how the CPU usage can be reliably benchmarked and will also post them my measurement results, which DO slow it's HTC that has a buggy driver, NOT the third-party apps.

I'e continued benchmarking my other Pocket PC's; neither the Dell Axim x51v (A12 ROM) nor the Fujitsu-Siemens Pocket Loox 720 did exhibit any kind of CPU usage increase with the stylus down.
I'll do the Trinity benchmarks on Monday (unfortunately, I don't own the device, it's my employer's and don't have access to it during the weekends). If it indeed turns out to be resource-hungry, I'll publish an article on the matter, which HTC can surely not ignore any more.

The answer unfortunately is yes! As mentioned in my first post the Hermes also suffers from this just as bad! I've simply given up playing Krally. All I play now is worms which is playable as its not a speed intensive game.
Its such a shame though, because on my mates asus p525 which is like a year old now, Krally runs so fast
Damn HTC. This will probably be the last HTC product I'm going to own!
Keep us updated and yes doing those tests sounds a pretty good idea.

Hey mackaby007,
How could you move from Universal Crossbow to Athena at the moment? I find that for a few days of using crossbow, it's exceptionally responsive, also it's a better and more stable ROM compared to WM5. I noticed right away the extra performance and fast synchronization, Better multiple SMS features, No Longer memory Leak problem(So I don't have to keep soft resetting), Reliable Installing/Uninstalling software, Elimination of occasional pauses problem.
Just the mean of justifying Athena purchase now.

I agree too WM6 on UNIVERSAL is really good, but there are things Universal can't do, but Athena could! e.g. GPS, extra Rom, Micro Drive, bigger screen.
Personally, i really thing the 5 inch screen is a plus, you can fit so much more info on one screen, i used to think Universal screen is big enough, but after using Athena for almost a month, Universal's screen look really quite small to me.
And also i think the design and built quality of Athena is better then Universal as well.

Perfectly said Wu. Just to add to that.....WM6 is a great O/S, which makes the Universal great for a while longer.....but Athena blows it clean out of the water in every way!! Therefore Athena (best device IMHO) coupled with WM6.....= cutting edge mobile technology with the richest hardware feature....simply no competition IMHO.
It's like comparing the Wizard with the Hermes....same form factor...different device/technology alltogether.

Hi Wu,
May I know how can you fit more information in one screen compared to Universal? Isn't Universal and Athena essentially the same resolution 640x480, therefore technically you see the same amount of information only bigger size?
Please correct me if I'm wrong.
Thanks,

yes that is basically right, but don't forget because Athena has bigger screen, you can really change the font size to smallest and is still visible, (so small font in Athena = Medium font in Universal). This way you can fit more info on one screen, you can also change the icon and everything to smaller one.
For opera it's the same, browsing through internet is so much better now.

The next of my concern would be the battery life. How much better is the battery life in Athena compared to Universal? Let say if you work on documents with lowest backlight on continuously in universal would last you for 5 hours but perhaps 8hours in Athena?
Thank you guys for the encouragement.

i would say Athena's battery is truly amazing, personally i think it's much better then Universal. I have not work on documents that much on my Athena, but for day to day normal usage (read news, make calls, send message, play games, GPS), with Bluetooth and 3G always on, with backlight set to highest, it can easily last for 1 day.
Stand by time is good too, i have my athena beside me when i go to bed (battery level is 70%) . Wake up in the morning and is still 70% !
I have virtually every device that HTC have made; So far the Athena (My one is a dopod U1000) is the best so far. It is by far the most usable that i have come across. The screen is Wow and best of all the phone is so dam stable. BT works across all profiles, all my software works, I am a heavy user of the phone both voice and data, I must admit as a very heavy user by the time i get home my battery is like around 40-50%, possibly also because all my apps are on the microdrive. (TomTom runs so fast installed on the MD that when i installed the Maps on the SD card the difference was unacceptable compared to the MD) TBH when i got my Universal it was a little disappointing (way too slow did not support HSDPA), and no soon as the TYtn was released i upgraded. The tytn is also a great phone but the screen size is too small compared to the Universal. The Athena Rocks! best HTC device I have had so far..
i agree with you faisal. I do a lot of remote oncall support for my office and my athena has now completey replaced my bulky laptop, allowing me to connect to my office whenever, wherever I am.
The athena offers a much better and user friendly screen size, although much bigger than the tytn, its size certainly outweighs the annoyance of having to scroll all the time.
To most people the athena is massive but after using it for a week i find myself liking it more and more, as I have said it has now more or less reduced my on call laptop to a brick in the corner gathering dust.

Hey faisal, nice to hear you enjoy your device so much, me too here ! just wonder when you say you install all app on Micro drive, do you come across any problem at all? any more battery drain? And also when you say TomTom on MD is much faster, how much faster is it? I have install mine on SD and it seems really fast as well. (e.g. Load up TomTom in 5 sec, GPS signal in 10 sec, route planning in 7 sec).
After all, will you suggest me to move all my app to MD?

Wu5262 (got it right this time.) I have not had any issues yet running software from MD, even spb shell, which should be installed on main memory works perfectly installed to MD. In regards to TT6, you will notice the difference when switch to browsing the map, play about with the zoom and pull the map up and down, you will notice it redraws much quicker when run from MD compared to SD. As virtually everything runs from MD there is more drain. Average usage (I use HSDPA a lot, do a lot of browsing with opera and use Sling box viewer an average of 2 hours a day so thats streaming TV via HSDPA, an average of around 10-15 txt and at least a total of 45min worth of calls (not all at once)) with 100% charge at the start of the day by the time I get back from work around 6.30 7.00 pm, my battery indicator is between 50-60%. I have not found it an issue yet where I get worried that i may not have enough charge to last till the end of the day. For back up I use WM5storrage to mount the drive and then run a Robocopy script which does differential copies, so I do a backup every day of my MD which takes on average less than 2 minutes every day.

thanks for the info, i will keep that in mind, maybe next time when i upgrade i will install everything to MD.
One more question, do you have any issue with spb mobile shell? does your spb menu load up correctly? mine one don't load up straight away, i need to point here and there to get it to work. when it finally loads up, all my sound is gone.
I have heard other people having the same issue as well, might to do with landscape VGA. Anyway, i have disable the spb Menu to load up from startup folder and only use the mobile shell plugin.
Your one working with spb menu?

Hi faisal, when you installed your Tomtom did you let it auto start from the SD card and then copy everything over to your MD or did you use Activesync to move all the setup files to your MD first?
Yes, I have to agree U1000 is so damn stable. It's probably the most stable and the most problem free out of many PDA's that I have used before. It's much more stable than Universal. And that's for sure. All my softwares are indeed working flawlessly. Bugs problems that I used to experience under Universal WM5 seemed to have already been ironed out completely. It's the most mature WM5, which is very impressive IMO.
At the moment, I'm reluctant to upgrade to WM6 in June unless they offer similar stability which I doubt it after knowing Microsoft for a long time.
Well I was having a lot of problems with Universal WM6 and Vista, Office 2007, WDMC. Synchronization problems, Slow Word processing problems, partnership problems, Contact notes disappearance and many others...
I'm so happy that I bought U1000 after so many considerations.

Me too agree...just superb...
I have some speed Issues with my Ameo. It's not that the thing is generally slow, it's just that I don't understand.
For example, I really like SPB Brain trainer game. It's a simple game with no 3D or alpha blending. It runs great on my MDA (HTC Wizard) but it lacks on my Ameo. The screen update is slow and the sound lacks. The Wizard has only 1/4th of the pixels to update but I assume the Ameo has a better CPU and VPU.
On the other hand, I have this 3D pool game. I can run it in a low-res and high-res mode. In the low-res mode the screen updates are good only the sound lacks. In high-res mode everything is slow.
Under WM5 I had the same problems with running movies. Even the smallest 3gp (?) movies would lack. I upgraded to WM6 and the movies run fine now. The rest of the problems stayed. So, the other software needs to be rewritten? The Ameo is actually incompatible with some of the software?
Is there anyone who has these problems? Is there anyone who knows why the Ameo runs slow? Is there any way to fix this.
Here are some things that have been noticed so far with the R2 release of Xperia ROMs. Go through the list and cast your vote above.
(If you chose from the last two selections, then please post your ROM version - i.e. Swedish ROM, Vodafone UK, Generic UK, and so on... and also point out what points you disagree with)
The device now boots faster.
Faster menus - switching tabs in settings is quicker.
Programs launch quicker and file explorer is quick in loading folders.
Bluetooth Problem reported to be fixed. (I didn’t face any bluetooth problems with the old software and am not facing any now.)
Wi-Fi bug fixed.
Panel animation is a bit smoother but still laggy on switching from portrait to landscape and vice versa. Overall a faster panels experience.
Video playback has improved a lot! CP benchmark on a video resulted in 90-92% on the old ROM and is now increased to 98%.
Word prediction in most text-boxes.
Media Panel improvements including; music indexing is a lot faster, image scrolling is almost as smooth as it should be, changing tracks show information about the track at the bottom of the screen, and most importantly it now only shows pictures from the My Pictures and Camera folders on the main and internal storage – say goodbye to all those images from program files and windows showing up.
Camera improvements include faster focus lock and more stable focus. Preview is also smoother and introduces a new setting letting you define the frame rate to use for the video to shoot.
Furthermore, I think they updated the 3D drivers too. TouchFlo 3D is running way smooth - especially the Pictures and Media tabs! (flicking through pictures and music is quick and smooth) + Slide2Play is performing much better with this new updated ROM; quicker and smoother movement in landscape, switches album/song images correctly on song change, and games are also functioning way smoother than before.
Best Regards.
Salman Khalid.
I have the generic UK R2A ROM, and since flashing its definitely much better, the only points I cant be sure of are the games (dont have those extra) and the tf3d working better as I dont use that... but all the other points spot on and its humming now... fan-fricking-tastic...
I do agree with the points but still not a huge difference.
Pannel lag is the worst. This is the central point of the X1 and its crap still laggy as hell ok they boot slightly quicker but going from landscape to portraight is bad.
As for bluetooth fix so far its stayed on but im not completely satisfied until i get my tomtom back from repair and try it.
booting is about the same for me.
videos i need to test.
as for the extra games all they have doneis put the games from Java into the program menu. this is **** as the games are al trial versions and that blockbreaker is only a 90 second demo! WHY ffs dont waste your time and effort putting it on the X1 its a **** game im not going to buy it!
Also a main point is i have not soft reset my X1 yet! this is great finally can i go a day witout doing a soft reset?
Im still not entirely satisfied and even though i really like the X1 and will not give it up i still think it could be so much better. What are SE playingat
To summerise im happy with the update but still want more, more and more.
There's some issues with playback of recorded video, but other than that vid playback is better.
Overall I find the x1 much faster, especially on screen redraws and other 2D malarky, there appears to be a new DDI in this one that uses the hardware better I think.

I guess the game point doesn't really need to exist on that list - since its not an enhancement really. FYI - added only with the Vodafone UK ROM.
As for Panels... given that they are the main thing on Xperia, there should have been more improvements with them. Maybe a panel or two!
I flashed to x1a GENERIC NORTH AMERICA R2AA008 (1.03.948.8) couple days ago. (I have x1a purchased from sonystyle.com nov 08)
Camera - still testing. no option to turn off shutter sound.
Video - has not test yet.
access sd card - seems to be faster.
Headset works now in vibrate mode.
radio rom - 1.10.25.18. Seems to switch to GPRS more often than 1.06.25.29 (Probably will test other radios)
Overall is SLOWER;
Cannot make it: DON'T capitalize first letter (no matter if checked or not, it is Capitalizing always!)
Still no zoom at 3MP (I know its only digital, but comeon!)
Picture Quality / AutoFocus worse, for sure NOT better!
Still lags sometimes, while opening programs or clicking on anything!
Cannot choose to see ALL pictures in media panel anymore!
and so on.... !
I have Generic UK R2AA008 with the customized software ID from the download here! I have before, originally a different Generic_UK Customized version and had NO such problems besides the Bluetooth sometimes(!) turning off.
IMHO both NAM R2A and UK R2A have been improved
Still not perfect, but better overall xperiance over R1A
So I leave a positive feedback: Item as described. Would buy again. A++++
newly updated Generic_UK ROM
*First thing I've notice: Message Sent notification Fixed.
*Everything seem to boost up as far as performance is concern.
Satisfied and very Impressive as of now...

Are you sure you flashed with the correct version ?
I strongly agree with the list of improvements.
And zoom at maximal resolution (for us 3 MP) is not a bug, it's just the way Sony Ericsson wrote his software on any of their mobile phones, which is exactly the same for any Sony PowerShot camera. You cannot zoom digital at maximal resolution.

No capitalizing issues at my end. Check your Camera settings - quality must be low or something. Zoom is simply not an option offered in the camera firmware, really not a bug! Overall speed improvements, but will still show a little lag at times - it is windows mobile 6.5 after all! And who wants to see all pictures in media panel? Media Panel kept bringing in pictures from progam files and so on, so turning that off was good, but i agree there should be an option to toggle that option.
I've had my SEX1 for one week today, and so far no real complaint's. I noticed the last post in this thread is about a month old. Any updates, after longer usage? Do you recommend doing the update?
Thanks in advance.
If you check your rom and see you have an older R1 version then
Answer = Yes
It's greatly improved my speed on my phone, i no longer want to through it at the wall when it lags, because by and large all lagginess has been removed.
here's my upsets. I've flashed mine using generic uk rom. official SEUS since I can't use cooked rom which voids my warranty.
suck no. 1.: the damn thing always connect to 3G / Phone Data whenever it needs internet connection. Even if network is set to "My ISP". Even if nodata.cab is installed. And hell, even if the wifi is turned on and somehow your wifi connection at home becomes disconnected for whatever reasons, the 3G/Data connects. I just hate this feature. Whoever did it is a wuzzz! heheheh. Connecting to 3G automatically means adding paid data to your bill automatically. I reflashed the device twice. and I still get to connect automatically.
no 2.: This feature already sucked before but now the improvement sucks even more. Before, whenever you listen to mp3, whenever someone sends you sms, your mp3 mutes, and device plays your sms tone, making your music skip for a few seconds. This does not happen on SE phones. But of course, using UIQ.
Now, whenever you listen to your mp3 and someone sends you sms, the music keeps on playing while you sms tone plays at the same time. Real lame I should say.
no. 3.: I couldn't say camera or video recording has been improved IMHO. Because you now have the choice to record your videos in a High or Normal frame rate. Since the device can record at high frame rate, Who the hell would choose normal rate from now on? I mean would it still make sense? Then a minor thing is that the silent shutter isn't there anymore, The layout is noticeable that the 5th option wasn't there. Although I never cared.
no 4.: Random appearance of Flight mode bugs. Whenever your turn OFF your flight mode, the WIFI turns on. Even if it is off right before you turned ON the flight mode. this happens on occasions.
no. 5.: Faster boot up is noticeable. But I do not need reboot the phone, and it's not made to be noticed booting up. And again. And then again.

No problem that your English is bad, but I am not sure what you mean.
Do you mean when you turn on your phone the CLOUDS (weather clouds) are crossing with lag? That happens to me to, but only when I have Wifi on. There is lag because the device is busy with connecting to the Wireless connection.
When I do not have Wifi on and so it does not have to search when I turn it on, there is no lag.

Hello
Maybe you are talking about the activesync issue.
With my phone I have a lag (say 5s lag) when I switch on the phone while being off for a while (longer that the activesync update period which is 2 hours in my case).
It seems that this is due to activesync that tries to connect immediately and taking all phone resources.
I haven't found any workaround so far.

I'm sorry im not so professional on the Windows mobile , my previous phone was Sony ericsson P1i , anyway . could you tell me whats the Active Sync ?
Can i Solve this probelm ?
All of the HD2 has this problem ?
Yes all are affected by this...
When u turn off all automatic Download Options (Stocks, Weather, Facebook, Twitter, Youtube and Time Sync) and have Wifi not connected all the time, there is only very small lags when the taskbar is updating.
When u do not disable all auto data connection, the phone is busy with connecting (GPRS/EDGE, HSPDA or WiFi) and this is causing heavy CPU load...

My hardware buttons were also a little wobbly yes. Now they are starting to get more and more fixed. Just walk with your HD2 trough snow and rain, and the keys will learn they need to hold on tight if they don't want to fall of the device haha! No but seriously, my keys really feel better and better. Just use them for a month at least.

I do not know if the issue comes from activesync of your phone. It is an supposition. There can be many other reasons why you see this lag. Try to describe more what you have.
Activesync is the tool that is used to synchronize outlook (appointment, tasks, phone number, ...). You can find the application on "Start"->"tools"->"Connectivity" this is the green icon with two white arrows. I do not know if activesync is active on your phone.
If you do no need exchange sync, you can try is to go to "Menu"->"Schedule" and set "Manually" for both peak times and off-peak-time.
I confused :-(
Dear Friends
i disable that animation ...
Just tell me is a little lag normal or not ? ..
has iPhone 3g any LAG ?
Anyway , thank you for your guide ...
yes i´ve seen some lag on the Iphone 3Gs during heavy CPU load like connecting WiFi or GPRS too.
But u can´t compare it:
the iphone OS is completly hardware accelerated, but WM isn´t. The iPhone doesn´t even have animations on "homescreen", so u won´t be able to see some lag there.
I think it isn´t very hard to get an OS working smooth if it is made of only one screen where u can scroll some icons to the left or right. And the iPhoneOS is especially made for this device only, for this specific piece of hardware.
There are plenty of Windows Phones running the same OS, and this is the reason why microsoft is still #1 on home and buisiness PCs in the world.
COMPATIBILITY !
For me the iPhone will never refund any WM phone, cause i don´t want to have a phone which is not even able to play MP3 or send files to other phones via bluetooth...
Tested three HD2z - all of them exhibit a momentarily LAG while switching between menus (especially noticeable after startup) / during rapid-browsing between pictures / when the taskbar refreshed due to wifi's status or a frequency change, etc...
Some people don't really care... some others might be convincing themselves that there is no lag at all - but it's quite noticeable, and there is nothing you can do. maybe HTC will improve this in their upcoming manila/sense releases.

Thank you dear Friend ...
But i have this LAG on my Weather Animations On Today Page , For example could cross with a littel LAG Also At the Start when a push the icon's Up the cross with a littel LAG ..
My English Language is not so good, Could you tell this matter to HTC Support team & Then inform the Result to us ?
I noticed a lag when scrolling bottom sense scrollbar in direction from settings(last) to home(first). Sometimes it is also noticeable forward(home->settings) when weather animation is active. I set home wallpaper to be static and the lag in this direction was gone. Probably something with graphics acceleration. There is much more data on settings screen, so maybe after tap->slide procedure(when the semitransparent curtain with big settings icon activates), it takes much more graphics power to make it smooth. I tried many ROMs, but all of them suffered with this.
Installing chainfire patch makes no difference as weel as setting EnableVSync to 0. Also, the blinking taskbar icons when some animation is active don't look very nice.
Didn't find any solution, so any tip for this is welcomed...
