Hi All,
I experience the following wiht my Qtek 9000: when I start reading Avantgo ( I have the old version still, not the standalone one ) , it displays regularly advertisements where I tap always "no thanks".
And now comes the trouble: from this moment Pocket IE blocks. :x Avantgo news are not coming up, and Pocket IE just sticks in the memory. I don't find any way to kill it or to kick it further ( I tried with third patry process killers also, like MagicButton ).
In the status bar it says "Connecting", but nothing happens anymore even when WiFi is on... Only a soft reset helps me out, but sometimes Avantgo still comes again with the adverstisement.
Did anybody else experience this ? Is there any remedy ?

Open an application, for example, Internet Explorer and then close it.
Next, check out the applications running in memory:
Settings-> System-> Memory-> Running Programs
Internet Explorer is apparently still running in memory! Is this a known bug and if so, is there a work around as I would expect this to affect the performance.
Also note this happened before and after the ROM 1.60 Upgrade.
it's been like that from the first version of windows CE
i suppose that because of slow cpu and mem
and such ms believed that keeping the applications running
would inc the response time of the pda so they would not
seem slugish compared to palm and other pda os's
This is a Windows Mobile 2003 'feature'
There are programs available to close the program down completely.
I have my personal favourite, by far, and is completely free. I can't remember the name of it and I'm currently updating my ROM, but as soon as that's done, I'll look in ActiveSync and let you know.

Certainly one of the thing's that I've found since the recent XDAII ROM update is that closing apps down via the Tast Manager has caused the OS to crash out with the message 'A unhandled error has occurred in the shell.' type message (has only happened a couple of times). The only way forward from this is a soft reset.

Hi,
How are you trying to exit the programs that this happens to ? It could be that instead of clicking what you think is the close button, you are actually clicking the Today Screen icon ?
As regards Task Managers, the best I have come across and use all the time is PocketNav. Here is a link for it.
http://www.scottandmichelle.net/scott/cestuff.html
This app allows you to see currently running programs and flip between them with ease. You can also close or close all programs from this menu too.
Hope this helps.
Rgds,
Rob.
WisBar Advance
http://www.lakeridgesoftware.com/wisbar
Highly recommended, very small memory footprint, very fast and highly customizable. Oh, and FREE. If you get it, make sure you download an XP skin. Don't use the bundled ones
EDIT: Just so you know, it doesn't officially support Phone Edition. To turn the phone on/off via the taskbar, you have to close WisBar to access the icon.

I'm just using the O2 Active Task Manager (the little arrow on the bottom of the screen) that comes by default with the OS (haven't got round yet to installing a decent Task Manager - will check out the suggestions made here!).

WisBar Advance is one of the better ones that I've used but I will not give PocketNav a go, as there is a HUGE problem with WisBar and the XDAII.
Once you recive a call and access a notification (missed call, SMS things like that). You will not be able to recive any calls after that, if you ring your XDAII from another phone it actualy rings on the other phone but the XDA II does not register the call at all (as though no call is even being placed!!!, no missed call, no error messages NOTHING!!!)
I loved WisBar untill I've narrowed the problem down of not reciving calls to uninstalling or exiting WisBar and doing a softreset and never had the problems again...
Most other task managers I've found seem to have problems with the Phone Edition, cannot hide the Phone ID Program, cant close the Phone after it has been opend, phone keeps ringing over and over a gain even though there is not incomming calls... all are a few problems I have found with other Task managers I've tried... I will give that PocketNav a go and see how it works with phone edition...
I have tested most task managers under Phone Edition and my conclusion is that SBP's Pocket Plus is THEone...
It actually let's you see the notification area just as it's meant to be and it let's you exclude applications so they don't close but minimize (perfect for IA_Caller_Id.exe)
Best regards,
Rayan
Do you know of any freeware ones that are worth while?
I have used pcoket PC devices from the Philip Velo1 and even before that. I have never faced memory loss like with the K-Jam. The device slows down with time but when I check the running programs list I see a full page list. As soon as I close them all the device performs well again.
Is there anyway of automatically clearing memory and closing running programs with the K-Jam (WM5) after say 2 or more programs running?
Hi.
What you need is to read http://forum.xda-developers.com/viewtopic.php?t=29863
and then install PocketPlus 3.0.1 . Problem solved
if you want to go fastter then read
http://forum.xda-developers.com/viewtopic.php?t=30011
and do what it say's .
but like everything in life do yer research before you take a risk .
I did, and the results were great . 200% improvement in performance and useability.
Thanks for the response. By the way I have already removed the Antivirus software.
But how does the PocketPlus help?
By the way I have tried the latest PocketPlus and it still crushed my k-Jam on reset.

Check to make sure you have version 3.0.3 of PocketPlus as my K-JAM crashed every time with 3.0.1. It wasnt until i downloaded 3.0.3 that i was able to boot normally. You could also disable the safe mode feature in Pocket Plus options before you reset which fixes the boot problem with earlier 3.x releases.
EDIT: SPB Software now has a note on the PocketPlus version history informing that the Wizard specific issues with safe mode have been fixed as of v3.0.4.
http://spbsoftwarehouse.com/products/pocketplus/history.html?en
Pocket Plus has a feature where you can change the behaviour of the close button [X] so it can close apps instead of minimise or even popup a menu with more options. Have a search of the forum here, and over at www.modaco.com as there is heaps of info about Pocket Plus and other options for closing / minimising apps (some of them are even free).

Chris
SPB Pocket Plus !!
can you provide me a link where to freely download Pocket Plus 3.0.3 or 3.0.4 ??? i'd appreciate it ...
thanx in advance.
If you're buying PocketPlus just for the task/memory manager, have a look at the many free alternatives, e.g. WisBar Advance, VBar, MagicButton, Pocket Nav, GSPocketMagic etc etc. Several (e.g. MagicButton, GSPocketMagic) allow you to set exception lists so you get to choose what gets automatically closed instead of minimized.
That's the best way with the Wizard, as some apps need to be kept in memory due to the slow loading times from ROM, e.g. Calendar, Contacts and Messaging. For URLs, Google is your friend.
I actually prefer managing what's running in the memory manually. gives me a feeling of control. I usually leave some of the frequent apps running. stuff like calendar, phone, activesync, IE.
SPB Pocket Plus v.3.0.1 works fine on my XDA mini s, but then after a soft reset, the dan thing won't load past the 02 splash screen, requiring a hard reset to get it working again.
Does anyone else experience this? If so, could anyone suggest some alternative apps that provide the following functions:
1. Close/minimize button
2. Desktop function
3. Battery meter across the top of the screen.
Cheers - Mike
"magic button" is good for all that...!
download the latest version (3.0.4 I believe) - that verison is compatable per their site. Its the verison I'm running on mine.
Regards - John
Me too and working fine with 3.0.4 version.
Robin
I'm running 3.0.4 on my Vario with no problems at all.
You have to install it on the main memory because it won't work from your SD card (mines did't)
3.1 beta
You can also try their 3.1beta release. On my 2K3 device it's much better integrated with the OS.

Yeh, I got it working now. Cheers guys

Disable safe mode?
Doesn't magic button have that annoying ditionary link?
You mean that annoying dictionary link where, if you don't click it, nothing happens?
I dunno, I don't think that trumps Pocket+'s annoying 'Safe Mode' enabled by default option where, if you don't happen to read about disabling the thing, your WM5 PPC may require a hard reset
Is anyone else having issues installing software onto the phone?
I have tried to push Agile Messenger (as no MSN) and Spb PocketPlus onto the device but hit issues:-
If I execute from the laptop, as I used to do with the M2000, it does not seem to push the files into the phone - looks like it is but they do not appear anywhere.
If I drop the files onto the phone and try to run them from the phone it seems to have a default message saying "....is not a valid Pocket PC application", even though they clearly are, and stops considering even trying to open them.
Am I doing something wrong, or can anyone offer advice before I lob this thing in the bin? Getting very annoyed.
Plus it has awful icons down the side and looks less like a Pocket PC and more the girlfriend's Samsung - I hate Orange. How do I get rid of these?
Please help - my blood pressure is going through the roof
Have you downloaded Agile Messenger for WM5 - beta. If not there is a huge thread on it
Hiya,
Yes I have tried that and it tells me that this is not a valid Pocket PC app.
Just spoken to Orange Level 2 tech support - they are not providing direct support for the phone other than it works with the SIM card and can get to Orange World - I need to speak to Microsoft apparently
It's a Windows executable you run it on your PC
The icons down the side are a today plugin. You should be able to untick the orange homescreen plugin.
Ok - I'm happier now.
Embarrassed to say that I had not realised I needed to reset the phone after launching apps. On the Blue Angel it did it as it transferred. With my TyTn it seems to need to restart before things take action.
Cheers guys, thanks a lot.
I have a hermes SPV 3100 but keep getting the following problems and was wondering if anyone else had similar issues:-
1. Sometimes when I go to load an application that is installed onto the microsd card, it says can't find application. If I eject the card and reinsert it all works fine - any ideas?
2. Periodically I get the whole phone lock up. It still looks like the screen is active but the back light is not on , nor will any keys work to re-activate. I have the following installed and was wondering if it could be one of the following applications that is the cause of the problem:-
- PhoneAlarm
- pTravelAlarm
- PocketBreeze
- PocketInforman 2007
- SportsDo
- Skype
- eWallet
- Tomtom Navigator 6
All of the above are the latest versions..
Any ideas on this one?
Thanks
Mark

Acouple of these are rather hungry processor wise and in particular I found PhoneAlarm caused serious delays/freezes if a) I was using a fancy skin-notably some of the vista ones and b) had it's skin on the sdcard.
My sdcard stuff used to appear and disappear but I have lightened the load of applications on desktop and it has settled down.
Another thing I've done is to instal Wisbar Advance desktop with multiple today screens. With this I install maybe only one application to each dektop. I had thought this would if anything slow everything down but in fact it seems to only run the application(s) applying to the desktop currently showing. Also makes for a less cluttered today screen. I also pin shortcuts to the other today screens so I can easily flick from one to another
Even so the occasional lockup needing soft reset is expected and I ensure wifi etc is switched of and no programmes running at night to ensure no freezes overnight and the alarm goes off in the morning.
