Some usability questions & problems.. - JASJAR, XDA Exec, MDA Pro General

i've had the o2 exec now for 3 months...some questions and problems that i have:-
1) when using an mp3 as a ringtone the phone starts ringing after 2-3 rings..:?:
2) how can i reset the call duration meter?
3) how can i backup/sync my sms msgs?
4) how can i copy all my contacts into the sim? ( to avoiding 1 by 1 copying)
5) when i select to txt a contact, outlook takes several seconds to load. can it speed up?
6) is there any remote control/handfree that can control media player? (play/pause, next/previous track functionality)
I'm new in the forum so i'm sorry if any of these questions have been asked before. If they have been asked b4 pls point me to the right threat or else enlighten me/us..

1) Keep the datastream as low as possible, and store the MP3 in main memory.
This MIGHT help a little bit..
You could allso try to upgrade the radio stack.
2) As of this moment; it can't be done. We figured out how to fool a WM2003 device, but WM5 is tougher..
3) As of this moment; I don't think you can..
4) Not sure, but why would you want to?
The SIM card has a maximum of 14 characters in the name, and only one number per contact. Nor does it tell you what kind of number it is.
And a maximum of 220 numbers/contacts. (Usually)
But to answer your question: I don't know..
5) My phone uses ~ 2 seconds to do this. It allso uses ~ 2 seconds to open Pocket Outlook (SMS/Mail inbox).
I don't think it can be speed up much more than that..
6) There are several. I can't do anything but to tell you to search.
pocketgear.com is a good place to start. It's not free, but you'll see what's out there. And you might pick up some good search terms as well..
Sorry that I couldn't be more helpfull, but I gave what I had..

It takes the phone a little while to start up the mp3 player, copy the song from SD or flash into RAM and then begin playback. The best way would be to have the player always in RAM and the mp3 always in RAM too.. but nobody has made a program to do this yet. Best bet is to just use a .wav.

thx guys

SMS BACKUP, SYNC, COMPOSE, SEND..
I found a great app that does all of the above, it's called JEYO mobile extender v2.0 for outlook.
great, highly recommended!
STILL LOOKING FOR A MEDIA PLAYER REMOTE CONTROL...

Questions about o2 active and using XDA Exec - hel please!

OK, im a O2 XDA newbie and just got an o2 exec.
I intend to use it with tom tom 5 eventually but i mainly want to use it to connect to 3g internet and making phone calls of course!
I have a couple of questions.
1) By removing the o2 active/o2 software what is the advantage? I understand it makes it run a little quicker but by how much? Will it make connecting to o2 3G / GPRS more complex as I like the simplicity at the moment.
2) Can i rempove the o2 stuff wiothout flashing as I already have a lot of emails/data that i dont want to lose on my device
3) If I do have to flash, what will I miss from the o2 software?
4) How can I change ringtones to my own MP3s etc and is it possible to assign different ring tones to different callers or groups of callers.
5) Is there any better wifi software. At the moment I find it a little tricky to swap from one wifi network to the other without turning wifi on and off and going through a lot of menus.
6) Do I need to uninstall 02 stuff to get Tom Tom 5 to work.
Any help much appreciated.
Cheers,
Roger
Anyone able to help on any of my questions? Please!
Roger
Hi,
I saw your post and decided to sign upto this forum.
i also have an XDA Exec and getting rid of the o2 menu bar doesnt realy do much at all, for starters the o2 menu bar is annoying and messy.
I have managed to unlock my fone but have only tested it with an Vodafone sim so far, leave your email and i can email you the file and instructions.
to add your own mp3 ringtones just put your mp3's on your memory card but not in a folder and to add an mp3 message tone copy the mp3 to the windows folder.
anyother questions feel free to ask.
Removing the O2 active software greatly improved the speed of my Exec. I didnt use it so I dont miss it at all, the unit is still very easy to use without it.
To remove the O2 software, you dont need to flash, jut goto start-> programs-> Install Type, and select basic, voila!
As for TomTom, I believe you need the 5.1 update - I havent tried installing TomTom yet, but it is in my todo list ;-)
Allan
If you select o2 active basic set up, it is not uninstalling it. Search the forums for the corp code, that kills it off I believe, that is what i am using and i prviously had basic on, and its now even faster!
Also - you will need to remove a file from the windows startup folder to do with o2 software, forgotten what is is killed, just hunt about..
If you uninstall the O2 software and you only use O2 e-mail, will this mean you can no longer access it using the xda? This may sound like an incredibly stupid question to those of you who are experts, but please bear with me, this phone is a very new thing for me, and I'm not keen on tinkering with the setup if I don't know what the possible outcome may be. I haven't been able to get my xda to sync to Outlook on my PC either, but I don't use Outlook for my e-mail, so at the moment that's not a major disaster.

I have been going over this forum (have a look here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/viewtopic.php?t=30330&highlight=
) and others for quite sometime reg any word on unlocking the xda Exec, with no real result. It is essential for me as I spend much of my time overseas.
So, I would be gratefull if u could send me the data, info and instructions on unlocking the handset.
Oh and i have some foreign SIMs here in London - so I can verify with them, whether the unlocking process can work.
Thanks
My XDA from O2 came unlocked (already tried with a "3" sim) I noticed a huge speed increase by getting rid of the O2 menu bar, I did it by removing (or you could rename) \windows\startup\active.lnk and rebooting, this plus overclocking to 624 MHZ makes it run like a dream. It is so fast E.G it can fully switch from Portrait to landscape in less than 2secs. and it works every time
hard reset it and choose the corporate mode, miles quicker and so much cleaner than the o2 garbage............The codenwhen prompted for corporate mode is 0506
if it aint active syncing, have you got the latest 4.1 update? if so, check your firewall, or come off line and disable your firewall see if that helps, if not, go to microsoft and they have a page to guide you through forewall settings.
hope that helps.
Hi, I'm a Newbie but learning fast,
I have just got the Xda exec, and was really disappointed with the Personal Modes performance so I did the hard reset and used the 0506 code to install corp mode without the o2 gear and now it runs as fast as any Pda i've seen if not faster, the screen refresh rates were much better. but hey! whats a few nano secs between models eh! I think just using the Install Type option doesn't do it properly, so I'd go for a hard reset.
Anyway after hard resetting and installing the corp install, I couldn't really find much that the O2 software actually did! I didn't miss anything. I think the O2 software is one of those type of programs that free memory but actually take up as much as it reclaims, making it useless.
You can run TomTom5 with the O2 software running but to connect to most Bluetooth GPS devices You'll find it advantagous to use the 5.1 update cab files instead of using the TomTom5 cab files. The 5.1 cab update files are actually full install files for the application only, you still need the maps, voices and the essential speed camera poi. I now have the latest TomTom and up and running. excellent program and joanna lumley's voice; well, sat nav heaven.
As for WIFI I could only find this: http://www.geekzone.co.nz/content.asp?contentid=4437 I also found an interesting little program called Hitchiker.
MP3: I've found it better to convert any audio file to WMA, not mp3. wma is better compression and its native to windows. I convert all my music to wma on the computer; I think its clearer and it takes up less space. If you look in the Windows\Rings folder on your xda exec you'll find it has a wma file not an mp3. for ringtones I use the sample files used for ejay especially the sphere sounds.

Simple, reliable, FREE apps. Which one do you use for...

Hello,
I know this is mostly a personal tastes dilemma, but I am looking to add a few specific functions to my Wizard and I just can't find some solutions to very simple issues. Of course I already searched through several boards and freeware sites, but most of the times I am stumbling on overcomplicated, unreliable, unstable or just plain not-working apps even for the most trivial tasks. Other times they work fine... unless you have any other app installed, in which case they bork up the system royally.
So, what are your freewares of choice for the following functions?
1) ALARM CLOCK
Yes, just a damn simple alarm clock to wake me up in the morning. No fancy tricks: just set it (possibly even on a week's advance), select the sound/Mp3 to be played and be sure it rings up when the time is right. If you want to get luxurious, a snooze function initiated by any hardware button would be nice.
I used M.Toda's AlarmClock 0.04, but it seems to be impossible to select a specific sound or buzzing mode (it's always an ear-splitting MEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEP!!!), nor to keep using the Wiz when the alarm is set.
[Update: following Pat12's advice (see below) I downloaded the latest AlarmClock version (ARM version) and it works smoothly. No Mp3 alarms yet, though]
2) MP3 PLAYER
Just the very basic player functions: play the whole folder, add Mp3 to playlist, previous/play/pause/next buttons and a Mute function. What's the problem, you say? Well, all the players I found either blocked the phone functions (a player going on auto-hold on incoming calls would be wonderful), or would keep the touchscreen always active, making it impossible to put the Wiz in a pocket while listening to music.
[Update: The current best candidate seems to be Tcpmp, although it lacks a full graphic interface (meaning Previous/Next song buttons)]
3) WARDRIVER
Yes, I know. But WiFiFoFum hasn't any user-friendly way to select which available AP to hook to. HitchHiker does, but any time I launched it after the first one it made the Wiz unstable. That was on a non-updated ROM, though... I admit I have to check it again... unless you suggest anything better.
4) LAUNCHBAR
Nonononono... no l33t, gigacustomizable stuff, please. I simply need a self-starting thingie to have the icons for the Office apps and maybe the latest X opened apps always on my Today screen. If you've seen the "green" UK ad campaign for WM5 - that's exactly what I'm looking for.
5) ANTITHEFT APP
[edited: the correct name happens to be EyeOnThief, see below]
I used to use LockOnThief, which supposedly sends tracking SMSs to a hidden number list whenever a non-approved SIM card is inserted in the device. Great. Just one more thing would make it perfect: the ability to remotely wipe the device via SMS.
I know this is an AKU2 trick, but I've got no Exchange server so I'd like a simpler approach. Do you know any solution encompassing both the tracking and the wiping functions?
And, by the way, has anyone of you actually field-tested LockOnThief tracking abilities?
6) WI-FI "G" ENABLER
I'd simply like to enable the 802.11g protocol on my Wizard. The problem is: the Djvw Wizard Optimizer 2 seems to make my Wiz unstable, and Registry Wizard crashes on start (yes, I installed the other Cab too). What other layman's solution would you suggest?
[Update: thanks to Meschle (see below) now there is an optimal Cab-tweak for enabling the protocol!]
To give a little contribution, I can only give my undivided suggestions for four softwares I fully endorse:
SCROLLING - You guessed right, it's Smartskey! [And not "softkeys" as per my initial post...]
PERSONAL INFO MANAGER - EWallet. Not a freeware, but great in the way it synchs up with its desktop counterpart.
GAMES - PpcAtaxx (a much more interesting variant on the Othello/Reversi theme which is perfect while commuting) and PocketScumm, to play the old LucasArts graphic adventures
Thank you in advance for your help, I'll really appreciate it!
Hi I'll answer a couple of those
For an alarm see 'Wizard reliable alarm project' WRAPhere http://forum.xda-developers.com/viewtopic.php?t=43692
where there is an english version of pocket wakeup
Enable 802.11G reg tweak
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\COMM\TNETWLN1\PARMS: dot11SupportedRateMask=1
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\COMM\TNETWLN1\PARMS: dot11SupportedRateMaskG=8
All values are decimal
What does this green WM5 ad campaign look like? We yankees have been hearing all about it.

Can you provide a link for LockOnThief?
SCROLLING - You guessed right, it's Softkeys!
What is this? I'm having issues scrolling in PIE Plus since upgrading to AKU 2.3 and if this is an app i can try it may help. Do you happen to have a link to it?. TIA
Thanks for the first answers. Here are my first replies:
Meschle: I did check that thread, and it seems that Pocket Wakeup isn't very reliable at all... Also (but this is just an aside), the Italian translation of Pocket Wakeup was one of the worst apps I ever tried, totally borking the Wiz.
And about the registry tweak... I'm just a retarded farmgirl... no hacking tricks for me, please... I just can't believe there is no "download, run, forget" apps to enable the G protocol...
Mattucd & vijay555: Yup, that's it!
Romp: http://www.mycnknow.com/LockAppen.htm (My bad: the actual app name is EyeOnThief... I was confused by the actual filename)
Xandermac: Gah! I misquoted the name again! That would be Smartskey! I don't know if Smartskey will do anything for your problem, but it's right on this board, at http://forum.xda-developers.com/viewtopic.php?t=41060
Any more takers, please?
Alarm Clock: AlarmClockE is the only alarm clock software that is reliable for me, at least for the time being...(until it fails, like all the other I tried including Pocket WakeUp)
MP3 Player: TCMP, it does pause the song or video currently playing upon incoming phone calls

Try mobialarm 3.2 then - I find this reliable and like it because it plays wma's http://guillaume.tristant.free.fr/
btw are you really a farmgirl?
Meschle: I am actually quite a bit of an IT girl, but sometimes I'd much rather go back to the farm. Case in point: MobiAlarm. To witness:
Installation notes :
- Uncompress the ZIP file in any directory in your PocketPC
- Run the CAB file, it will install a "runtime"
- Run the file called "install.app", it will install MobiAlarm[/url]
MobiAlarm link is located in \Windows\Start Menu\ or \Windows\Menu Démarrer\
The program himself is installed in \Program Files\MobiAlarm\
WHY?!? Why, I ask, should anybody need TWO installations for one godawful simple ALARM CLOCK, forchrissakes? And why does it end up tucked in a forsaken folder, with no icon anywhere? How should I be supposed to remind myself to browse up the Wizard to find a lone file among hundreds... just to get awaken on time?!?
And the punchline? I followed this guy's installation instructions: the runtime went smoothly, and his app simply never appeared anywhere. (my two cents: it found localized foldernames and aborted without any warning message).
Pat12: AlarmClock does the trick!!! No chance to get it playing Mp3s, apparently, but the ARM flavour gets the fade-in working. Thanks!

I put together a wlan g registry tweak cab and also a wlan b tweak for anybody who wants to revert back to b mode.
Install to device and softreset after.
2) MP3 / video player:
TCPMP, www.tcpmp.org
I doubt better could be made
Thanks for the auto-tweak, meschle!
If only things were always so straightforward...
Kilrah: The link you provided ain't working, but I found this download page for other interested people: http://corecodec.org/frs/?group_id=53&release_id=224#r224 (the version you want is the "Windows Mobile Smartphone" one).
In fact Tcpmp is very close to perfect. I only found it strangely lacks Previous/Next buttons on the main screen... or is there a plugin or something to get it?
Just a little update to say I recently needed a tool to fix a storage card, and I was pointed to the non-free but very good SK Tools... yay for it!
By the way, any more suggestions for my initial search?
about TCMP, you are right:no next/prev button. But it's highly customizable and you can assign the otherwise useless softkeys to it. I did it and I can operate TCMP without getting the stylus out or using my greasy fingers on my clean screen
Well..I find it's much easier to have clean fingers
Just kidding. TCMP is a true gem.
Mortplayer is a pretty good free mp3 player. Also there is an alarm clock built in, so you can use ur mp3's to wake you up, and it's been pretty reliable for me. Good interface and not very processor intensive.
http://www.sto-helit.de/modules/edito/content.php?id=28
Thank you all! I'm treasuring your suggestions... and continuing my search for the remaining apps!
For launchbar try http://forum.xda-developers.com/viewtopic.php?t=42913

Any software requests out?

Hi, I'm a developer wanting to write an app/today plugin. Do you have any request?
Yea I've wanted this for long time and hope you make it for me. Program that like the watch beep or vibrate 30 min or hour and not turn the screen on?? so I can tell time without pulling the phone out.
Thanks for the opportunity, I was thinking about asked here.
Today plug in for Last call and Running Program as in O2 Plus. Both are nice features of O2 Plus but sadly hacked version has lot of issues to run on wizard and it's big prog to install only for those plugins. Thanks.
check this out http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=328317
I'd love an app that would allow you to get notifications of email that goes into folders other than inbox. Currently, there's no way to do that, and there are no rules you can set like in desktop Outlook to inform you when a message goes into one of those folders.
Hi Kartam, I use claunch, you can see it in my avatar there, I would love to be able to finger scroll the launch icons to the left or the right to quickly get to all my apps, configurable icon size of course. Outside of the today screen a finger friendly file browser is definitely waiting for development, something that has the look and feel of pocketCM but shows your files instead of your contacts, complete with favourites and filters for stuff like music videos or documents. It should also allow users to set a default action on selecting any given item.
funger friendly alarm clock?
Hi,
how about an alarm clock with numbers like a telephone pad, so you can easily type in the wake up time (regular cell phones allow this). I tried all sorts of commercial products, they are not good (snowtime, spb time, etc...)
Or how about a modern version od "pPod"? :-D
Good luck with all your programs!!

Mine's rather Simple!!!!
...or at least I think it it should be.
All I want is an app (preferably that sits on the today screen) that can toggle the network selection between automatic, roam only, and home only.
Sometimes I need to roam to hold a proper signal, and in those places I like switching my phone to "roam only". Then, when going home, I switch it back to automatic network selection. Problem is that this is buried in many menus and takes several clicks to switch. Its a pain to do this 2x a day.
what do you think?
I actually think you may be able to do that with MortScript, I could've sworn I saw a script that did something similar on HoFo or another forum with one that did almost exactly what you described, but it might've been the WiFi radio in conjunction with a GPS puck...or something
I have multiple application using GPRS. My problem is that all those application are not using tha same APN (not sure of the name, I mean different GPRS connections). Each time I need to use one application or another I need to go to the parameters, change my setting click multiple times on OK.
It would be great (at least for me) to have an application on the today screen which permit to select the correct APN.

Stephane

What a great age we live in when a completely touch screen digital music player is not considered as modern!
Haha, you got a point there, touché :-D
What i meant was a more modern pPod skin (maybe more skins to choose from...?), a playlist manager of some sort (so you dont have to browse through all kins of folders until you find your mp3s), slightly bigger buttons, ....
I love the design and the simplicity of the pPod though, just a little tweaking would be cool. And yes, i did also try mortplayer and HTC audiomanager, both great programs, but both programs are too big for just playing music (in my opinion)
Actually a great program would just be a hack to have HTC Audio Manager use the ID3 Number tags to sort music instead of Alphabetical
Re the new ppod program - that'd be great - I've been refreshing the iphone media player thread like nothing on earth - cant wait to see what that turns out like... the HTC hack would be good tho.
ps you might want to check out Simple Tunes V1.61
Hi!
You can make a little program for me??
Here you can find a little CAB http://forum.xda-developers.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=49265&d=1188921933
They copy to the Windows folder a little executable, copy into StartUp folder a shortcut to it, and add few registry-entries....
Well, this program don't have any interface, simple start when device start...
The target is "improove" the quality of A2DP transmission (audio over bluetooth)
BUT, when this service running, the battery quickll drain!!
You can make a simple app (like a GUI) to enable/disable it??
To enable = write few registry-entries and copy a shortcut to the StartUp folder, then softreset the device
To disable = remove the same registry-entries and remove the shortcut from the StartUp folder, then softreset the device
Can you create an application that will let my Hermes roam the floor vacuuming!?
a2dp stereo auto enable
can you write (or is there out there) an app which enables the a2dp pairing with a bt headset so the stereo is enabled by default when the headset re-establishes a connection.
currently (for me) if i turn loose the pairing, ie if I charge the headset, then turn the headset back on for a2dp. I have to run the bt settings in control panel and click 'set as wireless stereo' on the headset.
note the phone headset is enabled straight away when it is powered up.
thanks
left/right scrolling today screen plugin
this would be a sweet today plugin....

Best Music Player on HD2 Running SPB 3.0?

The Parameters: as mentioned in the topic i'm running a Stock Rom with SPB 3.0 (i find it smoother than 3.5 and with options i like).
- Use will be primarily/only Audio.
- Have a 16GB Sandisk card with with over 8GB of music (in only 1 folder, although i have no problem placing in separate folders)
- Allow me to re-engage BT Headset functionality! (Major Priority!)
Let me also rule out some of the usual Suspects (giving my reasons):
0) HTC Music Player: AM Not Running Sense, so that rules it out (cannot find a way to engage it separately from Sense in SPB)
1) Coreplayer: Like it a lot, fast start (with Library function disabled, but some niggles;
- unable to control with BT Headset.
- Unable to read songs in separate folders.
- Up to 10 seconds switching between tracks.
- Does not have true Shuffle function; always repeats itself. (i find it suspicious if you can go backwards and forwards in shuffle mode and it will always give you the same tracks)
2) Inbuilt WMP; Lags like Hell! buggers up usage of the rest of the device.
3) Pocket Player 4.0: same as WMP if not worse; Only a soft-reset would clear it
4) SP2; Unable to see full music list (although that may be due to the lack of artist folders on the card).
- Is a bit too familiar (i.e. taking liberties with its priorities)
5) Mplayer; A general bugger! (not sure of the version, and not re-installing to check it; was down-loaded circa July'09). Didi not even properly display itself, as soon as you start it up it just flickers and you cannot do any thing else and none of the device keys will work any longer.
6) Nitrogin 1.2 Alpha4; Nice simple layout. Fast. Enabled for Touchscreens, with plenty of other good options (shake to change track!) but (and this time only TWO niggles)
- No BT functionality, and (This is the Major one!)
- Pauses for up 5-10secs in playback when the screen switches off. (and if you use your device for multiple functions, like novel reading, texting, and making/answering calls during your journey to and from work, then this is a Major NoNo! espcially as there is no BT functionality for switching/pausing tracks!)
Sorry to unload, but for me this is the last major road block for True uptake of the HD2 (especially, as for everything else, its an upgrade from my TG01 (which had BT functionality, but lower Bt Signal Strength!)
Any Help/Suggestions would be most appreciated
I refresh this topic, because i looking for music player on my HD2 (windows mobile 6.5). Nitrogen was OK, but when I have in one folder more than 300 songs then between previous and next track is lag for ~5 seconds. On symbian s60v5 was really great music player FolderPlay and i look for similar application. [sorry for my bad english ]

perhaps this player is what you want: MortPlayer
I can't send you a Link because this notification from this Forum:

Questions for Usage

Hi There!
I just bought this phone and I am struggling having come from Symbian. I was wondering if some kind person(s) would help point me in the right direction.
1) Bluetooth. How do I "authorize" a device so it makes connection automatically?
2) How do I send multiple contacts to a bluetooth device?
3) Under Contacts
4) Is there a way to unlock the screen without that unlock slider thing? It's very frustrating
5) How do I get a horizontal full qwerty? Seems like mostly I can't get it to come up ? Should it not be available all the time?
6) Under "people" I can't seem to add contacts to that? Is that it's purpose? How does "people" compare to "Contacts"?
7) Below the quicklinks there is a little arrow, but I can't get to what's below it which I think is more quicklinks? How do I add more?
8) Is there any way, even via purchased software, to get voice dialing?
9) Is there a good divx/xvid/x264 player?
10) is there a good backup utility?
Re Roms. It's very confusing for a new person, so many options etc... Can someone recommend a good one? I know they are all different and I am not sure what I want, but I guess speed and battery and stability are all important. I understand I might need to upgrade the radio as well, are they region specific? Will I lose my settings and data if I upgrade? Can I upgrade Roms on W7 x64 or is it like the Symbian where you need XP?
Thanks very much!
about dialing
i was in contact with htc germany .
they said that voice call is not part of the hd2 .
because of microsoft
1 - Connect your bluetooth device, then (if the screen isnt already showing) click settings - menu - all settings - bluetooth. click the device name, and choose properties, tick teh box 'connections authorised'.
2 - dont know
3 - no question?
4 - use a different unlocker? many people like s2u2 which is apparently very configurable.
