why no cleartype in landscape? - 8125, K-JAM, P4300, MDA Vario General

I dont understand why you can not use cleartype in landscape, is there a cab file floating around that will enable this?

Yes there is, and a registry hack likewise.

thanks for that, i am not too keen on editing the registary but i will if i have to, i dont suppose you have a link to cab file that will do it for me? (man i'm lazy!) otherwise dont worry i'll give the registary a go.

I hadn't noticed that until now. Yet another Microshaft cockup !

Paper?
What are you doing with that outdated media?

I reckon the reaosn it's not on by default in landscape is becasue subpixel smoothing does not work as well when the subpixels run top to bottom, not left to right.

Tintoy - exactly, the technique wasn't really designed for the hardware in that orientation, and suposedly gives a headache long term. And as some on PocketPcThoughts call it, BlurType
a1laserboy: do you know what I do for my day job? Lots and lots and lots of paper! Did you know it's the bleach in paper, along with the rough serrations, that causes the excruciating pain and geysers of blood coming from my poor liddle piggy. Yes, I have a low pain threshold.
V

if they wrote the code for subpixel hinting to have 2 different modes, one for horizontal and one for vertical orientation of the pixels, it would work.

Basically they should switch between ClearType (LCD) and their smooth font rendering as used on CRTs (where whole pixels are addressed, just 'anti-aliased')

is there a free registry edit program?

Larger Buttons than the ETEN Dialpad

The ETEN Dialpad is very nice, but the buttons are still too narrow and not spaced wide enough.
Plus, the History, etc. buttons on top are touching the top row of numbers and are too easy to hit by mistake (getting you out of the keypad in the middle of dialing:-(
Is there something which provides larger, more spaced out buttons?
I see posts asking for it, but can't find any alternatives.
Thanks!
O.K., is it because it is a technical issue and it would be difficult to map large, separated buttons covering most of the screen, or is it that everyone is happy with the size of the buttons.
I doubt it's the latter, since I've seen a number of posts about it, but nobody has offered a definitive answer.
Anyone?
I hope its not an hardware issue cause i'd love bigger buttons.
Sorry to be a pest, but just wondering if larger and better spaced out buttons are at all possible?
The reason I am asking, is that even in ETEN it seems that the buttons are simply wider and appear larger mostly due to the fact that they touch each other and utilize the gaps between the standard dialpad's keys. I personally like the ETEN idea a lot, but find that without spacing between the buttons, dialling is actually a bit more error prone than with the original dialler (and I keep hitting History by mistake, since it touches the "2", which can totally screw up dialling fast in a car:-(
I would play with creating some larger bitmaps, if it's within my very limited abilities, but have the feeling that spreading the buttons on a larger are on the screen involves much more than meets the eye. Am I correct in this assumption?
Anyone who has an answer to this?
(Or even better, a solution?

why would you say smart dialing works, when it does not. At least not on mine, with this installation above.
I've seen the skin a while ago, but I was reluctant to install it because people said smart dialing was off, and now I'm stuck with it because I believed you.

i'd love to see a dialer that takes up the whole screen and only has the following
Call History

1 2 3
4 5 6
7 8 9

Granted of course the call history button can be smaller to accomodate for a larger number display and keys.

I played with that on my old PDA which was only 3.5". It did not work very well because the screen is too small for two hand typing. I don't yet have a HTC Anthena/Dopod U1000, but my guess is that it would work perfectly given the larger screen size.

Well I'm using Fitaly and I find that it's a little bit too big for Athena. I need to find a way to reduce the size of Fitaly just by 30%.
Look for Happy tapping keyboard
Happy tapping key board works great. Select the vga bmp's. I find the tiger skin quite nice.
If you're going to install ozVGA or MvRTrueVGA, then as far as I know your only choice is Resco Keyboard. ( edit: tengo does vga too)
If you're going to stay with QVGA, and are looking for full screen keybaord, then apart from SPb, you might want to try Hikeyboard. I like Hikeyboard instead of Spb more. The reasons are:
1) Hikeyboard gives you the solution as non-full screen as well as full screen input.
2) In the full screen mode, you have the ability to see the whole page of what you're typing, whereas with Spb you have to get out of it to reveal the document.
It's just unfortunate that they don't have a VGA version.
I think you may also want to consider Ten-go. I dismissed this initially, but now I think I'm going to look at it seriously. Even if it does not support VGA mode it will still be very useable ( edit: it supports vga mode!) because there are only 6 keys to press. It works very much like the predictive text of your mobile phone when you do SMS. Very fast and very few keystroke.
Anyone have screenshots of a sof tkeyboard on the actual device?

ha ha.. how shall I put it? Lets just say that i'm still using both modes depending in situation. I hve quite bad eyesight so I can't see some icons and fonts.
If u hve 20/20 eyesight, go for the tiny icons and fonts. If i'm reading a large document at home, I put it in front of my face without glasses and use true vga. web browsing is done always with true vga. But if i'm recording golf score the icon in qvga works better for me. In summary, I use both, with the mode toggle program from Mark Vale.
after extensive evaluation, i've found the best soft keyboard - the tengo keyboard. It supports both qvga and vga mode.
Very briefly, you may think of it as a qwert keyboard which does not expect you to be a sharp shooter. you can type in exactly the same way as the default keyboard, but if you miss-type it will stillgive you the word you want.
Check it out at www.free.tengo.net. They have a free version for personal use. I'm using it with mvrtruevga and you can even type with your finger without the stylus fast speed!
There is very very very very low learning curve.

The Athenas true resolution is QVGA 320x240 stretched to 640x480. This is why everything looks the same (sizewise) on a smaller QVGA device like say the HTC Hermes or HTC Wizrd.
It's not until you use a 3rd party application that you get the True VGA dimensions on your 'so called' VGA device and you get to appreciate all the screen real-estate (if you're the type to have lots of info on your screen, you'll soon see the benefits).
Personally I'm happy now with the Athena's default resolution with WA3 giving me 15 shortcut icons in the bottom system tray.
It's about choice. With a VGA device you have these options, but with smaller QVGA devices, icons would be too small to be useful if one applied the TrueVGA software to it (that's if the app would even work on a small QVGA PPC).
Hope that helps a bit.

MvRTrueVGA problems

Hi, after installing MarkVan's true VGA package in this link
http://www.jaml.com/MvRTrueVGA/, I have identified the following issues that I'm still unable to solved. I thought that a special thread to address specifically problems after this installation might be helpful.
I'll start by first listing what I've identified as problems:
1) setting>system>backlight screen could not be used. This problem is serious, as somehow by default, the backlight is switched off after just a few seconds in true VGA mode. Even if I try, using QVGA mode to change it such that backlight will not be switched off, as soon as I toggle back to the true VGA mode, it is switched off after 10 seconds again.
2)setting>system>clear storage screen is garbed. It is difficult to make up what the input instruction are in performing hard reset. Not critical but would be nice if the screen could be fixed.
3)setting>system>power screen is garbed due to wrong sized icon. This is minor problem.
4) Setting>system>TV out screen title has the wrong font. Minor problem
5) Setting>system>VueFLO screen title has wrong sized font. Minor problem
6)setting>connection>comm manager screen is garbed. Not being able to control the connection could be quite a problem. In this application, the Settins>Wireless LAN screen is also garbed. I can solve this problem by installing Commmgrpro to give exactly the same functionality, however. Therefore, I would say this is not really an issue. But would be nice if someone already know how to solve this.
7)setting>connection>wireless Lan heading and the screen is garbed. The screen could not be used. The font sizes within all tabs are of wrong sizes. Again, CommmgrPro solves this problem by replacing this.
8)setting>personal>phone (pin2 and "more" tab) are garbed
9) Phone. Although I've applied VJbigpohne, I'm somehow unable to get exactly the same effect as what vj has in his screen shot. His screen shot showed that the numbers are nicely sitting in the centre of the phone buttons and the phone stretches all the way to the bottom of the screen. Mine looks different and ugly. The numbers are sitting to the extreme right edge of the buttons and there is a blank space at the bottom of the screen. I would like to fix this to look good
10) Spb GPRS monitor plugin has wrong sized font. As a result, I cannot see the download speed of my connection. The main application itself, which shows in chart form the usage has no problem. I have been looking for another product that works fully under VGA mode to replace the Spb GPRS monitor, but none of them gives me the download speed (They only shows the total MB downloaded, but not the Kbps info)
11)Pocket music. In landscape mode the option and playlist buttons are missing. In portrait mode there is no such problem. edit: this is not the vga problem,as it also behaves the same way I'm qvga mode.
12) Software Input Panel, or the soft keyboards, are soooo small, that they are unuseable. The standard big keyboard was nice as I can use my finger to type it without covering up the screen. If it is not possible to use the original soft keyboard, then I would like to use the HiKeyboard, because this keyboard has the ability to also do the job the the Spb full keyboard, as well as provide a calculator keypad. I like Hikeyboard the best, among all the ones I've evaluated. However, with MvrTrueVGA, I'd be forced to use only the resco keyboard. I prefer not to pay for resco keyboard, and to pay for Spb full keyboard, when I can just pay for Hikeyboard. I also much prefer HiKeyboard over Spb Full keyboard because it has the option to reveal what you have typed without exiting the full keyboard. Coming to the worst I'd get the Resco Keyboard although it is not as good as the Hikeyboard, so I supposed this is not the most seriuos matter.
13) Quick GPS program does not display correctly, and at the bottom of the screen display does not reach all the way to the edge of the screen. It looks ugly. Also, you can't see vital date and validity information on this screen.
14) Pocket Mechanics - The icons are too big and the characters are too small. It look real ugly as compared to the QVGA appearance.
15) My VOIP client SJPhone does not stretch all the way to the bottom. In landscape mode, the bottom part of the applications are cut off, while it leaves a big hole on the right. EDIT: qvga display landscape mode is also faulty I'm the same way.
16) In QVGA mode, my H and G indicator for data download has disappeared under true VGA mode. In place of the H (which means HSDPA connection is available), it shows the "connection is active" indicator instead.
In place of "HSDPA is in use" indicator, it shows just the signal strength without indicating whether I'm on a UMTS or HSDPA connection.
There might be more problems with other applications which I have not listed, and if you know of any, please add them in as a repository for all of us to look at.
It is possible that some of you have got solutions to the above problems.
If so, let's post the solution here, quoting the problem number if you can.
Thanks guys and gals
I'm not sure (and I'm happy if I'm wrong) but I think the best answer is:
"Yeah, but what'cha gonna do..."
WM5 is not intended to be used in full 640x480 mode, roumors will have it that WM6 is. So let's keep our hopes up.
But you obviously have more problems than me. Most screens are good and readable for me, except the phone (before applying VJBigPhone), Clear Storage, QuickGPS and the G/E/U/H icons + signal level. Of all these, the GEUH and signal level indicator is the only thing I "need" fixed (I can live with the rest).

Hi Moskus,
Thanks for the reply.
May I get more specific about what you're having?
a) You mean your soft input panel (on screen keyboard) is not too tiny? Are you using Resco keyboard to overcome the problem? Are you able to use the standard with no problem?
b) Your backlight adjustment screen is okay? Using the standard or replacement which consumes additional memory?
c) What about yout comm manger screen? Are you still using the standard or using a replacement which takes up more memory?
d) Your phone does not leave a hole at the bottom after VJbigpohne is applied? The characters on the keys are centered or also to the edge? I saw VJ555's screen shot and its as beautiful as the standard. Mine is aweful looking, although it works. Are you having the perfect looking screen just like VJ555's or are you putting up with the less than perfect looking screen?
e) Do you use SPbGPRS monitor? When you click the task bar icon, does the pop up screen display correctly? Or are you not using this?
f) Your quick GPS is displaying okay?
g) What is your ROM version?
h) What it your os language?
Thank you for sharing these information.

I think we have different "standards" for what the problems are.
a. I'm using the Resco keyboard, since the original is not showing up (as described in many other threads here and at the Qtek 9000 forum)
b. The backlight adjustment screen is OK.
c. The Comm Manager is "squished" but usable. I would prefer it if the icons were bigger, but I can use without any serious problems.
d. The phone does leave a gap at the bottom with the last displayed picture, and it would be nice if it didn't. But I can use the phone without problems.
e. I haven't tried SPG GPRS Monitor on this device. However, I do not have problems with the "home icon" that Magic Button is displaying in "Task Bar mode" and I can press/click on the other status indicators.
f. The QuickGPS application is also "squished" together as the Comm Manager is. But I can read when I last updated and I can find the "Update now" button without problems. I am able to use the program, but it could look nicer.
g. My ROM version is 1.25.409.2 (03/21/07).
h. My language is (not supprisingly) norwegian.
So TrueVGA is not perfect, and it probably never will be (until WM6 I hope). But I think the advantages (insert pun here) outweights the disadvantages. Using my Advantage without TrueVGA is not an option for me anymore.
I agree with you that it is not an option for many people. I guess I need to lower my expectation a little. It was just that after seeing the beautiful screen, the initial euphoria was somewhat dampened by the ugly screens for some places and for some program.
I'm using VGA mode most of the time, and use the largest font in the setting>system>screen>font selection due to the strain on my eye if I use other fonts.
One of the key problems that I had using trueVGA initially was that because I could not control the backlight setting, everytime I toggle to VGA mode, it revert to turning backlight off in 10 seconds. There is absolute no way to change it to stay on for longer time. So it was very frustration to look at an extremely dimmed screen which is totally unreadable outdoor. This problem seems to have gone away after two recent hard resets. With that problem gone, I guess I can live with the other imperfection
I had a simular problem with the backlight control --- I have installed "Todaywarrior" and I can control the backlight from the today screen now while in VGA mode.

Thanks for this info. What can today warrior do? Does it let you specify the elapsed time before backlight is off?
what else can it do?

Hi Leblancrs,
Downloaded that and tried it. Unfortunatley, this actually is not doing what I was talking about. While it provides a slider to control the backlight (which I can already do in many different ways without problem in VGA mode), it does not appear to have a facility to specify how many minutes must elapse before backlight is automatically switched off (battery and main would have a different setting of course). Or am I missing out something?
Well ive ordered one of these devices on the basis that Windows Mobile 6 offers VGA. Im pretty confident that is official not just hopeful but Microsoft have been known to dissapoint before.
If thats the case then I guess this device will be up on ebay pretty quick. Im not going through all the stuffing around for VGA like what you're all experiencing and like what I went through for Universal VGA. Despite the fact that converting to VGA seems to be a much easier process now.
Hhhmm
I have installed MW6 on my device and no native vga support I am afraid.

I used truevga for a while, although I didn't experience quite the same amount of problems as Eaglesteve I did have distorted comms and dialpad screens and was unable to change the brightness. There were a few other niggles but these were the prevalent one.
After getting over the novelty of tiny icons and lots of space on the today screen I eventually removed the program. Now IE and Opera support high resolution it seems like even less reason to use it.
There seems to be no REAL advantage to its use other than to view lots of icons at once.
Taking all the problems into account I can live with chunky icons - they're hardly offensive to the eyes. and I suppose didn't pay good money for a 5" screen to squint and have to get my pen out evey time I want to type something or navigate through menus.
Much as Microsoft DO neglect certain applications and functionlity with windows mobile I think that they have made a conscious decision not to use VGA and this decision would have been made for a reason, though we may never know it.
I'll install MVRTruevga again and give it another try now and see if my opinion alters......

There are also a number of apps that look pretty strange with MvRTrueVGA. But I'll put up with some cosmetic defects for functionality. I just love being able to see a couple days of appointments, device status, weather info... plus an ilauncher strip, all on my today screen!

I had the same excitement myself initially, though I found it difficult to press these icons with my fat fingers and inevitably decided that it was easier to just navigate to the program folder and leave essential apps for the today screen. I hope a new VGA solution is developed soon which makes the icons a bit bigger and throws up less garbled screens and program glitches.
In the interim does anyone have link for how to alter the sidebar/ softkey size so they look like thse in MVRtruevga? my internet is very slow on my phone today so searching is proving very frustrating.

It is certainly easier to edit word and excel documents in VGA mode - I'm surprised MS didn't create a highres option for their office apps like the one in PIE.
You can change the default font size via the system>screen menu instead of switching to VGA for a slight improvement.

[THE] Make a Rhodium/HTCTouchPro2 MyMobiler Skin

Hi all
(Excuse me for my very bad english, I'm french )
I would like to have a skin for MyMobiler, which looks like Rhodium devices.
I have tried the Diamond skin, but it didn't match for the screen, because the resolution is different (640x480 for the Diamond and 800x480 for Rhodiums)
The Diamond skin is available here :
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=466565
I think you can easily adapt this Diamond skin for Rhodium resolution values (400x800px).
I don't know how to do this, so if someone would be able to make one, it will be a very good thing for all MyMobiler users who have a Rhodium !
Thanks !
Sam

Hi salucsam,
give me a little bit time and it is reday for the TP2. I never know that it is possible for the TP2. But i have changed some things in MyMobiler. I have a very nice grafic for that (link).
Waouw Nice skin indeed ! I've download it immediately.
Well, I think you know MyMobiler software, so if you can do a skin for MyMobiler as beautiful as the skin you made for Manila, its gona be perfect ^^ Take all the time you need !

Hi salucsam,
it is ready for 80%. But i have one problem. About the grafic is
a BMP file the background i have is white and i cant make it
transparent. Ok i have one more idea but i must test it.
At least the 4 little control button. But this i a case of time .
I love the hacking and modding stuff.
-----------------------------------------------------------------
Edit:
It is ready. A little bit quick and dirty. At this time only the background
and the zoom factor to 70%. You can change the factor in the xml file.
So be my guest and test it please....
Very good ! But.. Not perfect, as you will see on the screenshot I have take :
http://www.hostingpics.net/viewer.php?id=842663screenshot01.jpg
Now, you just have to find a solution to have a background which is at 800x400px and not 640x480 like it is on this first skin you made (the white you see under. The screen is not complete)
And to find a solution for the white corners that you can see around the application. Look on my screenshot..
I really don't know xml code, so I can't help you for this -_-
Thanks, and good luck
Sam
Hi salucsam,
look at my screenshot. It is perfect.
And here the code from the XML file:
<form
position="0 0 480 800"
backgroundimage="tp2d.bmp"
clipcolor="FF00FF">
<control
id="200"
text="MobileView"
position="44 130 480 800"
zoom="70">
</control>
</form>
As you see it is 480x800 portrait mode.
I don't know whats happend on yor system.
Please check the xml file. You can open it
with the notepad or gvim.
Ok, its good for me now, for the HTC screen.
But for corners, I really don't know how to clear it...
Look at this new screenshot :
http://www.hostingpics.net/viewer.php?id=575298screenshot2.png
As you see, the problem is those 4 black corners around the picture...I can only color them in black or white.
Do you know how to clear it ? I want them transparent, invisible.
Sam.

The grafic is a BMP file. So there is no transparence possible. I can't change it to a PNG format because MyMobiler doesn't knows the format yet. Possible you can ask the author on http://www.mymobiler.com/.
Hi salucsam,
you found out more about your issues?
Did you guys get the hard buttons to work?
Awesome, I love this app, nice job!! still need some improvements.
I think MyMobilier need to be updated, with more skins and more functionality, but its great like is, specially WIFI

I think there is a way to get transparencies with a bmp file using an added Alpha layer to the original .bmp.
Ive been trying to get this skin to work but i can't even get it to show, any pointers?, as i can't work on the transparency if i cant test it!!
There is also a thread over on HD2 skinning my mobiler
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=618050
EDIT got it to show! working on tranparency with Gimp!
I've only just noticed this thread!
I made a TP2 skin myself for MyMobiler a few weeks ago and I can tell you that MyMobiler has a bug that means the corners show when you use any other zoom level than 100% - the 'magic BMP colour' doesn't work at different levels. But, at 100% zoom, the bottom of the phone is cut off
I've tried e-mailing the MyMobiler author about these bugs a couple of times but he's never bothered to reply

Hi iridium, i was tried what i said above both in ginp and photoshop and although i can get the bmp to show transparent i can't get it to work on mymobiler, i have studied the HD2 thread on this and the touch pro and diamond threads, all the phone images seem to use this pinkish colour..what is this "magic colour" you speak of??! i have read what you have said about the bug and zoom etc, i am just interested to know as i spent a whole evening trying to work this one out!!!

Yeah, I spent a while on this too
If you have a look at defaultskin.xml, you'll see
Code:
clipcolor="FF00FF"
which is a kind of pink colour - this is the BMP colour that is treated as transparent and that's why the phone skins have that colour background in the corners. The only problem is, is that MyMobiler only shows the FF00FF colour code as transparent when it's at 100% zoom Drop down to 75% or 50% and the corners show.
Hope this explains what I've found out, please let me know if you find any more info?

Thanks for bringing me up to speed! ive just been testing the other skins as well and i now understand the same problem is for all, so unless you have a very tall screen it will always be the case.
I don't know about Xml but is there not a work around that we can trick the program into thinking it is displaying at 100% when it is displaying at 70? i'm guessing that would be 2 easy!!
My TP2/Rhodium Skin
I played around with this to get a skin to work. I am still having trouble with the start menu hard key, but the other buttons seem to work.
To get this skin to work, follow these steps:
1) Unzip the attached file to "\Program Files\My Mobile\MyMobiler\Skin\" directory. (It will extract to its own folder)
2) Edit the "\Program Files\My Mobile\MyMobiler\mymobiler.ini" and change the line for
Code:
SkinFile=Skin\DefaultSkin.xml
to read
Code:
SkinFile=Skin\TP2\skin.xml

Thanks man! I just tried it out, and it works almost perfect
First, I also had to change the line below that in the options:
"Showskin=0" to "Showskin=1"...Once I did that, the skin loaded fine.
There's just one small glitch, as it looks like the image has shifted "up" in the frame...it's cut off a bit at the top, and leaves a band showing down at the bottom (I'm including a screenshot to demonstrate). Hiding the toolbar improves it a bit obviously, but there's still a bit cutoff at the top.
Zoom works great though, no "squares" in any of the ratios I've tried
The "call" and "end" hardware buttons work just fine too...but the "home" and "back" buttons don't seem to respond.
I don't know if any of the issues are related to the fact I'm running a T-mobile TP2 instead of an unbranded or AT&T model like in this skin.
Anyway, thanks again for the effort, just wanted to give you some feedback from the field

Two questions really quick:
1) Which version of MyMobiler are you using? (mine is 1.25 Build 00122.0205.46)
2) Have you tried activating the skin through "View" -> "Show Skin"? Doing it this way turns off the toolbar completely leaving just the skin.
Thanks for the feedback!

1077/18=3

So today I was doing a calculation using my phone and it just happened to be 1077/18 and the answer returned was 3.
Tried it multiple times still occurs, anyone else experiencing this weird bug?
Also when I rotate the display to landscape it becomes 33

Did you change system font?
It's a bug, if you doesn't use official font, you will get wrong answer.
What's your ROM?
Better dust off a pencil and paper. They said you'd never use math in real life.. The calculator could never be wrong... mine looks normal!
Maybe there's a mode that's looking at the remainder after some decimal place, the hundredth? I've seen modes like that on some calculators that made me think my calculator was broken.
It could also be doing modular operations..
Hmmm...

I don't think so.
If you change system font to some font, you will get this problem.

I'm using OOS 4.5.5, had no idea about this bug, I'm using the quicksand font so I guess that's the cause of the issue then.
